Right, it seems like it works, but the votes don’t count.
The site records your IP to your vote, and a web proxy will only mask it, so the vote won’t be added to the site, it will only appear OK in your browser. PK tried it also, he came to the same conclusion.

This curve will determine HOW quickly Marina becomes #1 Sexiest Geek. Marina is catching up to the #1 position, but it is slow going, and the Acceleration curve shows that.
What that curve says right now is that the New Years’ party has slowed down the voting, and Phi’ls fans are not taking this lying down.
Take a look at the Jan 4 to Jan 5 Acceleration.
Notice the sharp upward line? That didn’t happen because the Moon was in conjunction with Mercury. How did that happen? Besides a lot of you voting, I made a lot of phone calls to friends. (almost broke my arm patting myself on the back)

For the newcomers, this is a “contest/poll” run by Wired.com to determine who is the number one Sexiest Geek for 2008. Please vote for Marina, who is currently in second position.
1. This is not a contest in the traditional sense. The word contest is a euphemism for open ended competition or open ended poll.
Essentially, this is a poll reflecting who we are, us, the HotForWords fans. Who are the more geeky fans? We are the voice that determines who is the number 1 Sexiest Geek. Without your votes, it is only a wish. Please turn your wish into reality by voting.
2. Has the contest ended? No. This is an ongoing contest. It probably never ends. What you read or heard about the contest ending or a deadline had to do with Wired Magazine’s deadline to publish their article of the top ten winners. Marina came in second due to her being massively down-voted by the first place winner fans. Look at my graphs.
3. Voting consists of one vote per 24 hours. This is a non-ending ‘contest’. Please vote as often as you can. (on a 24 hr basis)
4. In order for the 2nd place winner to move into first place, one must also down-vote the person in first place, or make sure that you get ten friends to also vote.
If you have qualms about down-voting, let me put it this way; the fans of the person in the lead are not taking it lying down and are very aggressive. (errrm, ahhh, I’m taking the high road and I’m being very diplomatic here. Does that mean I know what’s going on, and I’m not talking? Yup!)

Marina is continuing to gain and accelerate. The New Year’s parties sure put a halt to some voting as can be seen by Marina’s Acceleration curve slowing down, but rebounding after the parties. As long as we are in positive territory, all is good, but prefer flooring it and blasting through into first place.

Even though Marina is still gaining faster than Phil, the Phil fans are not sitting idly by. Notice the small increase in Phil’s line. In the last day and a half, the voting has slowed down a lot from about 1000 votes per day down to about 400 votes. The expected catchup for Marina has now been extended to ten days out, unless the voting increases.

Excuse my ignorance on the IP thing. I have two computers hooked up to one router @ work… vote one or both computers?
Hi Billy,
Your router is going to present one IP to the contest server which means you’ll only be to vote once per router no matter how many computers you have behind the router. I have 7 PCs behind my router.
You can test it. Wait for the time that you know that you can vote, then clear your cookies on both PCs. Vote on one computer. Then look at the other PC and refresh the page. You should now see the new vote.
Now, if you try to vote on that second PC, you’ll see the vote go down one unit or if it goes up, go back to the first computer to see if the vote actually went up. Just refresh the page.
You should see the vote not change, even though the second computer indicates that the vote went up. What you are seeing is the number change in your cookies ( a false indication), but the contest server is not accepting the vote until next day.

Just some additional food for thought about the Sexy Geek competition.
As some of you may know, one can only vote once per day in the Sexy Geek competition. Typically, there are about 1375 Up Votes for Marina every day. I presume that means that out of all of the HFW fans, only 1375 of you are voting. I realize that it’s possible to have a different set of 1375 vote every day.
My guess is that there may be about 2000-3000 unique fans that are doing all of the voting on any given day. I thank all of you for that.
Percentage wise, here is what that looks like:
Appx 1375 green up votes for Marina every day:
Percentage of HFW YT subscribers (166,574): 0.8 %
Percentage of HFW web site subscribers (45,095): 3%
Imagine if we could have just another 500 or 1000 voters.

Graph explanations:
The top graph shows the combined votes for each candidate where the scale is at the left. Notice that Marina’s votes continue to climb steadily. At first, I thought the big jump at the far left was due to a huge voter turnout, but it looks like that Wired Magazine rolled up other Marina entries just before they went to press with the above article.
The orange line of the to graph shows the difference between the combined votes and the scale is on the right. Marina needs to be in positive territory to be in first place.
The bottom left graph shows where Marina has trounced Phil in Green votes on Jan 1. Notice Marina pointing to the spot where she beat Phil. A great many thanks to all of you who voted for Marina.
The bottom right graph show the Red down votes. Notice the huge number of red votes Marina has received. Notice that Phil’s line is accelerating upward, meaning that you have heard the call and you have been down voting Phil. Thank you everyone!!!
If you want Marina to be in first place, please don’t be embarrased or have guilty feelings for down voting the person ahead of her. Either you down vote Phil, or you would need to call one or two other friends and have them vote to counteract the negative votes that Marina has been getting.
If the voting continues as it has been, I predict that Marina should be in positive territory and be crowned first place winner in about three days or about Jan 5.
