It appears to have originated in the United States… perhaps the word cope plays a part.. but that is about all I can find. It was probably just made up by someone as a word that sounds cool.” or how about a french poet Francois Coppe’e

    • Hey Anamda, Did you find the answer to your word translation yet. I have tried all of my internet translators and can’t find a match. Give Evan Owen a try, he is just below us as he knows quite a few languages. Leave him a reply and see if he can help you. Marina is in Vegas probably by now so she can answer us, but she will kinda be tied up for a day or two. Wish you luck.

      TA Mike

      • OK I gotta fess up. I don’t learn foreign languages; I collect foreign phrases the way other people collect stamps, then trot them out like I would a stamp collection to impress people.

I really only speak English, Spanish, and some Welsh. Oh, and read a little Russian, Bulgarian, Japanese, and French. Maybe a touch of Serbian and Greek. Plus of course whatever words in Portuguese, Romanian, and Italian that have Spanish cognates.

That said, the phrase is obviously Latin; the two “v’s” are the old way of writing “u”. When I get off work I’ll try looking up each word individually. But for now, something about “The best life” and “friends” is all I can make out.

  19. Evan Owen says: 72

Hey HFW Fans! Don’t miss the “Cover of Cool English Magazine” post — it’s a misnomer, there’s actually a whole interview with Marina, where she “spills the beans” about what she’s doing.

    My take on it:
Marina is passionate about philology. She’s using her sex appeal to lure us into sharing her passion, until how we feel about sex becomes inextricably linked to how we feel about words.

Of course, I have always been passionate about philology, am intrigued by foreign accents, and have a breast fetish, so I was immediately hooked on HFW from the moment I saw her!

  28. Hi my dear teacher…

I was wondering about the origin of:

    Serrendipidous

    Thanks

    Diddilysquat (another good word?)

  29. Word Request: patience
As in, “some people just don’t have any patience when making requests.” I thought this would be an excellent word to find the origin of, and, how does that word relate to patient, someone who is under the care of a doctor.

    There seem to be many related phrases or expressions to the word patience such as;
    - “My patience is wearing thin”
    - “Patience my young Jedi” (<– That’s for you Yoda Mike)
    - “Patience my pretty”
    - “Patience is a Virtue” (although some might object to that)
    - “Patience my ass, I’m gonna kill something.”

Could you do the video in the next hour?
I don’t have all day, you know.

    Hey Marina, another thought:
You have a 3g iphone right? So do i (and they’re amazing!!!!! I love mine!). Anyway….you should make a hotforwords iphone app. If you don’t know how to make and submit an app, contact some of the companies that do, and I’m sure they would be eager to make it. That would be awesome! (and a lot more convenient than getting on the computer, signing in, etc….)
    You should think about it.
    Thanks!

    • thetigtig says: 49.1

Hi,they are better known as “The Grateful Dead”.They where originally “The Warlocks”.Yes,Jerry Garcia picked the Grateful Dead name out of a book, but I didn’t think it was a Bible, not sure.I don’t really consider myself a Dead Head, but I have seen them 4 times,Rochester,N.Y.,Buffalo,N.Y. and two nights in Oxford,Maine,Not sure of years but the Maine shows where July 2-3.Please don’t ask for details, they are all blurrs.

      • augie says: 49.1.1

thanxs my spelling is a little off guess the 3wars i fought in has affected me somehow before jerry died i have been to over more than 100conserts and when jery died the group renamed as the dead in his honnor sorry my spelling is not as it should be but still able to fight in wars to defend our freedom Ltcom August Van Suchtelen US Navy Seals

        • Hi Augie,I meant no disrespect about your spelling, some people think it is spelled greatful.I joined the Marines in 1986,never been in combat and I thank you for all the service you have given to this country.I love this country and would die to defend the core beliefs it was built on.We are not perfect but we are still a beacon for the rest of the world. Our constitution stands second to NONE.God bless!!!!!!

          • thanxs my friend i was born in The Netherlands and at least you did serve your country war is hell to bad when this country changes and becomes American Union believe me we have problems here but we need to keep the USA not change to the AU

      • I have only been to one Grateful Dead show, but it was the musical event of my life. When I was in the Navy, my buddy’s dad was a roadie for the Dead. We had backstage passes at the Long Beach, CA coliseum. It was not really backstage, but in the back of the stage. It felt like everyone could see you, but because of the lighting, they couldn’t. We sat on a couch about 20′ behind the band, between the two drummers. I don’t smoke weed, but the air was literally blue. I didn’t even know I was hi, until I stopped on the way home, went in a phone booth and said, “Man, this phone has a really bad connection. Problem was, I hadn’t even picked up the phone, yet.

    • popzzz says: 49.2

      .
      .
The name according to answers.com: “As 1965 drew to its close, the Warlocks rechristened themselves the Grateful Dead, the name taken from a folk tale discovered in a dictionary by Garcia”

The use of “dead head” dates back to one of the earliest uses by Mark Twain in 1873 which meant “Anyone traveling for free”, and took on the meaning: “A person either admitted to a theatrical or musical performance without charge, or paid to attend” around the turn of the century, with the band itself originating “dead heads” in reference to themselves in print in 1971 on the sleeve of the “Grateful Dead” album for their postal mailing list.

Having lived through it and been there personally, this was the era of all the “heads” in general like “pot head” and “coke head”and “drug head” and just about “anything head” so I reason in thinking back on it this was how the “dead head” came about and/or shared the meaning of getting in for free.

      • augie says: 49.2.1

wow thanxs sweetie very interesting deadheads live 4ever

      • Yes,that is correct.I remember it said something like “dead heads unite, join the fan club”.They became famous for their free “shows” in Golden Gate Park and the commune house in Haight Ashbury.I have about 300 bootlegs from their shows as they are the only group that allowed people to record and even set up recording areas to the left and right of the sound stage.During the Maine shows I was in the taping section. My friends were allowed to plug directly into the mixing board,no outside noise at all. Those recordings sound amazing. All four shows I saw included Brent Mydland if that helps date them.

You see I forgot to make my payments and therefore my Insurance was “invalid.”

    Dear Marina,
I was thinking about you the other day. Your vocabulary must be so colorful, I wonder what you say when you are really worked up and and wildly swearing profanities. (Or do you swear in Russian?) WHAT IS THE ORIGIN OF THE WORD SWEAR? In court, to swear is good but, to swear as in a back alley is not good. HOT FOR WORDS MUST INVESTIGATE.

So if you want Marina to have a better chance at winning….

Vote for Marina AND vote against Phil! (That’s like +2 votes a person per a day.)
