I assume the system picks a random quote to display every 24 hours; how come it picked up two quotes today?

  5. voodooking says: 115

    Dear Hotforwords.

May I know where the term “Pass with flying colours” originated from?

    Love,
    VoodooKing

  6. mythman says: 114

Dr. Marina, You Are Amazing! It’s incredible, how you make the outtakes seem like ‘accidents’—like you don’t know everything-you-do with your beautiful knowledge will help your students!

  7. Evan Owen says: 113

    Hi Marina,

What are some common bloopers Americans make while trying to speak Russian?

A couple of examples from other languages:
When trying to say “I’m embarrassed,” Americans speaking Spanish often accidentally say “I’m pregnant.” Then they really ARE embarrassed.

Trying to ask “How old are you?” in Italian, Americans succeed in saying, “How many assholes do you have?” Which makes the American look like an a**hole.

Anyway, we’re not laughing AT your bloopers; we’re laughing WITH you!

    ***RUMOR DEPARTMENT: Marina’s Sweetheart***

I was watching Marina’s “Hawaiian swimsuit video” again last night (word request: “gobsmacked” ) , and finally noticed what 170,000 other subscribers saw before me. How could she possibly look that cute and fetching unless she was extremely fond of whoever was holding the camera? I’ve always found the amateur quality of that video somehow highly appealing, and now know why: just remember the etymological origin of “amateur!”

Anyway, maybe we should recall that our marriage and other proposals to Marina could be seriously annoying Marina’s sweetheart, which would not be fair to our dear Teacher.

So as the video ended, I marveled again at how it gives me a feeling exactly like being in love. Then I reminded myself I was looking at a computer image broadcast to 170,000 other subscribers, and the feeling went away. Still, it’s nice to know I can still feel that way.

    • mythman says: 112.1

Marina knows that–though she might be looking at a not-so-bad-looking person–she’s communicating with ‘hundreds-of-thousands’ (or ‘hundreds, thousands of times,’ but still lots of people) and enriching their lives through her spare-time sacrifice—spare-time she could be using to Save the World!

  9. kaibanator says: 110

    Word request : Tech

It may or may not technically be a word. However, I was curious about the word, as it is a shortened name for technician. It is also in words such as techno, technology, technicolour, Hi-Tech etc.

Plus I like techno music :D

  10. John says: 109

    Dear Marina:

WORD REQUEST: 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue will soon have a new inhabitant. My hope for the nation and the world is that he does a great job. To send him off in the right spirit would you investigate the meaning of the word: INAUGURATION?

    Thanks! Q

  15. Jay Leno mention In-and-out burger. I missed eating there. After watching a movie at the drive in I would go and get a In&out Burger. Whats kind of cool is there stickers. If you cut out the letters B and the R you get a really funny bumper sticker. Maybe thats why I like the food?

  16. John says: 101

Marina, If i get nothing else from this video, I do get the sense that your working very hard to speak very proper and understandable Engish. It appears that even after two years it can still be a strugle for you at times. I can only imagine what it must be like.

Another word phrase request: “If I get nothing else”

  17. hi marina!

i was just wondering what’s the etymology of the word sassy, and maybe if you could make a video about it. thanks!

btw, i really like your videos. they’re informative. :)

  18. pagedoll says: 99

“Bloopers”- Aw, the good ol’ days…a year ago!
You sure have come a long way teach.
I think I just realized that for the past 8 months I’ve been visiting this site I’ve been watching the American Dream unfold right before my very eyes.

    Very cool.

  19. hs4mm says: 98

    .
    Marina,

Since I asked about a timestamp based on when the raw footage was taken, did you make this “lesson” at the same time you made the GTW Game XI Answer? The bed and the bed-table area look alike in both videos; there is a grey folder-like thing toward the lower left (viewer’s left) corner; in one, Gorby is in your left hand and in the other, Gorby is in your right hand; in both, you handle lucky Gorby the same way; and your dress, hair, nail-polish, relation to the camera are the same in both.

Anyway, I can notice differences in the background among your other videos, but not between the “Out Takes” and “GTW Game XI Answer” videos.

    –H4Mm
    .

    • hs4mm says: 98.1

      .
      Connection to the easter egg?:

Yesterday, when I wrote the above, I thought the easter egg was the link to the bloopers lesson and did not think that what I was writing about had anything to do with the easter egg. But today, I read Captain Jack’s comment about the easter egg being related to the cat in the movie matrix (and related comments). So is the above “deja vu” the easter egg? Cap’n Jack mentions an illusion — is the illusion the background — did you actually shoot the introduction to Out Takes in Las Vegas and use the background from the GTW Game XI Answer? (By considering the parting of your hair, one can see that Gorby has actually moved from your left to your right and so the scene of you holding Gorby is not an artificial/mirror image of the previous scene taken in a mirror.)

Do you plan to reveal the easter egg?

      –Hs4Mm
      .

  20. :???: Bloopers within outtakes? In German we call that “doppelt gemoppelt” or is it rather a non sequitur? I liked the videos – make a new year’s resolution, Marina: The videos should be a little longer from now on, let’s say 6-7mins. instead of 3-4… size matters I thought…

  21. Hey Marina Met You at Youtube Live and Requested this Word in person but I Made a Video Request for the word “Matrix” Here’s my Video Request http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDjDE8KB3dY

  22. mutarum says: 95

    Hello Professor,

    I request the word

    “Success”

& thanks for the Holiday card. Welcome 2009!

    Thanks

  23. Joey Del says: 94

    Hey, Marina.

Can the next “Out Takes” be of the wardrobe mal-function kind, a la J. Jackson?!?!

Secondly, with the financial crunch we are all feeling, it led me to think what is the origin of the term “Piggy Bank”? :?:

Finally, last weeks jeopardy had a category for stupid word origins, mainly because the pronounciation was the same. I dont remember the clues but here are some of the anwsers in non-jeopardy format:

    german eis = ice
    french jaquet = jacket
    Old kinderhook = OK
    seophon = seven

Keep up the good work, Ms. HFW. Thanks.

  24. Evan Owen says: 93

    ***BLOOPERS***
    OK, here’s one of mine:
MOM IS REALLY MAD AT YOU! (Or maybe me!) I showed her the “Salary” lesson, and she said:
“WE FOUGHT FOR GENERATIONS TO GET MEN TO RESPECT US FOR OUR BRAINS WITHOUT GAWKING AT OUR BOSOMS — AND THERE SHE SITS, SCANTILY CLAD ON HER BED, WINKING AT YOU! WE’RE BACK TO THE DARK AGES!”
I explained that I only watch you for the intellectual content of your videos, and she gave me a dirty look!
Which I suppose confirms what Lincoln said:
“You can fool some of the people all the time; you can fool all of the people some of the time; but you can’t fool MOM!”

    •  ROFLMAO! Great post, EO! Makes me want to buy you a lifetime gift-subscription to Playboy magazine – for the well-written text in their articles, of course!

      {I wonder if they publish in braille for the visually impaired?}

I love your posts, EO, keep them coming!

    • Your Mom (respectfully) just did what us men are accused of doing. Not giving Marina the chance to show that she is very smart. Marina used her looks to get our attentions and then fill our brains with knowledge. Apparently the formula is working. Had Marina only used one or the other she would not be where she is at now in the most viewed ratings. I think if your Mom knew what Marina was teaching she would tie you to the computer and make you watch her lessons. Im thinking images of the movie ‘Clockwork Orange’. You should not show your Mom any of the lessons just yet but tell her what you have learned. Then when she asks you where are you learning all this you can show her who is teaching you this knowledge. I think then she will understand her first assumption was incorrect. I hope anything I said was not taken in any misunderstanding. Just wanted to make my statement to help.

      • Right… right CJ!

Evan, take CJ’s advice, and mine, and
we’ll make a subscriber out of her yet! :D

      • Hi Captain Jack,
With respect, Marina could do very well on her brains alone. As evidence, consider Anu Garg’s “A Word A Day” newsletter — no visuals, 600,000 subscribers.

I’m not sure I get the Clockwork Orange analogy. Malcolm McDowell was tied down in a state of near agony. I’m magnetically glued to HFW in a condition of near euphoria.

I doubt I’ll teach Mom much at this stage in her life (she was born before women had the vote) — but her store of knowledge may come in handy. With a looming depression, it may be useful to ask advice from someone who lived through the Big One.

        • In the movie Clockwork Orange one of the characters had tooth picks place so to keep his eye lids open. There was some other head gear that kept him facing forward to watch some disgusting videos to break him of some habits. It was a rather disgusting movie. I was using the idea of force feeding lessons to you. LOL….

Evan! Your Mom lived through the Depression! That is my current research project! I’m trying to retool my business to best adapt to the current depression (aka recession. Now officially recognized. Definition of a depression is a sustained recession.) I’m looking out for ideas that business came up with to survive those times. What I’m discovering is what worked back then is working today. Shoe repair business are growing like crazy. The movie industry is doing very well. Schools, like mine, are doing very poorly. It’s freaking me out to be honest.

          • Here’s a surprise: someone’s making a good living off of selling prepackaged brown-bag lunches. Americans have been eating a lot of meals at fast food restaurants, which are not all that cheap…but have forgotten how to pack their own. So they’re buying these bag lunches — cheaper, and even more convenient!

        • Brown bag lunches! Wow! Well they are much healthier than fast food for sure. This goes to show you how lazy Americans have become. I think we are going to see a lot of things like this. Back to the old ways of doing things. It’s will even become a popular thing to do.

I’m sorry, I laughed so hard while reading this… Your mom is so cute… :)
What you should have done, is shown her some of your comments and conversations you’ve had here.
      Introduce me, introduce me! :D

Dark Ages    Phenomenal! :D

    • Ahh , your mom loves you very much i see

  30. ☞Hey guys. Marina informed me of a cool little easter egg in her “Out Takes” video. No one has mentioned it yet. It’s hidden very well in plain sight. Can you find it? [Update:] “I’ll give you a clue. Remember the first movie “The Matrix”? What was wrong with the cat?”

UPDATE: Im such a moron!!!!! Ok that’s nothing new… The Easter Egg is NOT in the “Out Takes video”. No wonder you couldn’t find it. Sorry guys! Its in the Contumelious lesson. I’m so embarrassed. I don’t know what I was thinking. I guess I’m working on too many projects at once. Im going to start a new thread on that page with the clues. Come and join me over there and let’s see if we can find it!

Probably most of you already knew this, but if you click on your name after “Logged in as”, just above this first comment box it will take you to the Dashboard. I have a question. Not about a word exactly. What do we call the years 2000 – 2009 ? The 0’s? The 2000’s? No one has used anything as they did in the 90’s, the eighties, ect, that I am aware of. What did they call them in the early 1900’s? in fact what do we all the years 2010- 2019? The tens? The teens?

  54. Fianchetto says: 58

    Dear Marina,
I forgive you. Don’t worry – you need neither ask for it, nor need you even feel remorse. I expect neither. My love for you as another human being is without qualification and unconditional, transcending and pre-empting any other requisite on your part, and shall remain so, no matter how many covert insults you attempt to send my way. My response shall always be to forgive, however petty, however undeserved the barbs and insults sent intentionally, and surreptitiously at me, for I know ignorance to be the source, and there is no crime in ignorance. For the record, my capacity to forgive exceeds your capacity to debase, demerit, defame, libel or slander by many orders of magnitude. Continue if you really feel you must, but know that you are forgiven in advance.

    Ciao,
    Fianchetto

    • Marina says: 58.2

Fianchetto, I m confused. Your comment makes it look like I sent insults your way? Yet I haven’t nor would I to anybody… so I am confused. :???:

      • leonard says: 58.2.1

        Quote
“A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on.” – Sir Winston Churchill 1874-1965

      • Perhaps I am mistaken, but *appears* so to me. So to presume utter innocence on your part, as you claim:

I understand that appearances can be decieving- perhaps I decieve myself in misinterpretation.

“Your comment makes it look like I sent insults your way? Yet I haven’t nor would I to anybody… so I am confused.”

If you haven’t, then I stand corrected. My apologies.

Regardless: (note proper usage thanks to yourself) My love for you as another human being is without qualification and unconditional, transcending and pre-empting any other requisite on your part, and shall remain so.

        So, two cases we have:
        1. intentional insults sent my way => forgiven.
        2. misunderstanding on my part => please forgive me.

        Much love and every success!
        Ciao,
        Fianchetto

      • Bob says: 58.2.3

I suspect Fianchetto is trying to acquire undeserved status in the student body by hinting, disingenuously, that he’s having a private communication with Marina, thereby hoping to excite feelings of jealousy in his fellow students.
If my scurrilous allegations are ill-founded, I trust Fianchetto will extend to me the same forgiveness that he professes to convey to the object of his illusions.

      • “But honey, what did I do?
Oh, you know what you did!”
I thought that was one of the women’s weapons to confuse men.
But I guess it works both ways, cool. :)
Unless I see indisputable proof, I’m on your side sis! :-)

        • She doesn’t seem to understand it, but I am actually on her side, as well. Which fact making the whole thing even more convoluted than (I think) ever intended by either of us.

          • Fianchetto, we’re all good friends here, and we have each other’s best interest at heart, so why not spell it out?
It’s not clear to me, or to her, what went wrong.
I’m sure something did, if you feel this way now. And I’m all for fixing it!
I can tell that your a good person, and I can’t stand it when good people are feeling down.
Especially not here, this is a place where people come to feel good, and have their brains stimulated. Marina doesn’t always pay as much attention to her students after class, but that’s the way it is. Did you use to hang out with your teachers all day after school? Not likely :D
I respect whatever decisions Marina makes, because I’ve come to trust her. She proved to be a very smart girl and very independent, and I know that nobody can take that away from her.
So don’t worry so much about her. :)
I’m still glad that hotforwords is free, and she’s not charging us to see her show.
Being on YT, means putting yourself out there, for everyone to see. I bet you noticed that some people like her, and some don’t. I’ve never even seen her insult one of her haters, that’s how smart Marina is.
So if you feel insulted by something, I’m sure that it’s probably related to something she didn’t do, rather than to something she did do. And you said yourself “there’s no crime in ignorance”. As I see you’ve already forgiven her for that, so we can move on, and feel something new.
I hope that writing your thoughts in your comment, and hopefully afterwards reading my reply, makes you feel a lot better. Isn’t that what friends are for anyway? :-)

            All the best,
            Chemikalz

          • Thanks, Chemikal. I love her as a sister, making forgiveness that much easier. BTW – MY definition of forgiveness is exactly equivalent to “Complete, and unqualified pardon. Offense never happened in the first place.”
So, next step for me is to take a bit of time let it sink in to my thick (read: human, and fallible) skull that I may move on as you appropriately suggest. Thanks!

 And thanks for watching my vid 30+ times just to push it over 200! I am SO flattered! You are one awesome dude, and I am proud to have made your acquaintance!

Growing and feeling better alla time, thank you for the kind words!

    This one’s for you, Capman!

A Redneck from North Carolina walked into a bank in New York City and asked for the loan officer.

He told the loan officer that he was going to Bakersfield , CA on business for two weeks, needed to borrow $5,000 and was not a depositor of the bank.

The bank officer told him that the bank would need some form of security for the loan, so the Redneck handed over the keys to a new Ferrari.

The car was parked on the street in front of the bank. The Redneck produced the title, and everything checked out. The loan officer agreed to hold the car as collateral for the loan and apologized for having to charge 12% interest.

Later, the bank’s president and its officers all enjoyed a good laugh at the Redneck from the south for using a $250,000 Ferrari as collateral for a $5,000 loan.

An employee of the bank then drove the Ferrari into the bank’s underground garage and parked it.

Two weeks later, the Redneck returned, repaid the $5,000 and the interest of $23.07.

The loan officer said, ‘Sir, we are very happy to have had your business, and this transaction has worked out very nicely, but we are a little puzzled. While you were away, we checked you out and found that you are a multimillionaire. What puzzles us is, why would you bother to borrow $5,000?’

The Redneck replied, ‘Where else in New York City , can I park my car for two weeks for only $23.07 and expect it to be there when I return?’

  56. OK, for those ‘A’ personalities who need extra stimulation and who can’t get by with just one HotForWords video lesson per day, here is a related lesson called Bloopers.

if you could find the origin of the word “Sovereignty” or “sovereign”, it would be appreciated… cheers and keep up the good work

I usually pick on blonds when they make mistakes, and tell them, it’s OK, it’s normal to screw up sometimes, because your blond!
It just never occurred to me to make fun of you that way. Is it because I’m sensing your not a natural blond? :)

    • Evan Owen says: 53.1

Check out Nickname at 1:11 min:sec. If that’s really her, much younger, she’s a redhead!

A couple of other things seem to have changed too, with maturity.

      English coaching:
      Your = belonging to you
You’re = contraction of “you are”

      • I remember that video, but since Marina also had some sort of modeling career, changing hair colors is nothing unusual, at that age.
Coach Owen, thanks for helping me correct another mistake!
This one I knew, I didn’t pay enough attention.
I’m starting to think directly into English now, but some words sound the same, and they need translating if I’m to write them right, every time. I’ll get it soon enough though. :)
In conclusion, I’d vote for redhead too, and I also noticed the booby growth since then.
(I could wonder why she did it, she was OK the way she was before, now those two are just real attention grabbers… buuut, I won’t wonder about that since I do have other things to do :P She’s smart enough to make the best decisions for herself, and so am I :) )
I’m going to courses now, and I’ll talk to you tomorrow, after exams.

        • Chemikal, I must be missing something obvious that maybe you can explain to me. I keep reading references to Marina’s supposed surgical enhancement (”boob job”), yet to me she doesn’t look any more buxom than my ex-wife. As far as the change from the red-head picture, she was obviously much younger then, and didn’t have her full “maturity.” So if you know something from Googling her (in either meaning of the word), please send me an email at YouTube (just click my name above) and tell me what to look for. :???: :?:

          • I only know what she has told us.
I didn’t google her, and she never contested the fact that she has implants. (I don’t remember her saying she does, but I am pretty convinced about it)
Though in her case, where her motto “Intelligence is Sexy” applies, she could have just gotten them after each diploma! :D

      Hi Chemikal,
As long as I’m at it, here’s a followup on your “Aromanian” comment.
I was a bit startled at your comment that they are related to the Welsh, until I remembered that there were Celts in southeastern Europe as well, and that Vlach and Wallachia are etymologically related to “Gaul” and thus to Wales.

My mother’s church also hosts a Romanian congregation, whose pastor, Reverend Tudor, joked about being Welsh (because of his name.)

  60. I have a question to ask the student body. Why is there this obsession with the color of white? If I were to guess a color of someones yacht I would guess white and I know I would be correct about 80% of the time. My best friend had a white condo, white walls, white computer, white tables, white car, white cat, white ferret, white sofa, Oh I could go on forever.
I can only guess it has a large connection to a psychological reason. would the same/opposite be true with people that all wear black? Is it some kind of fear? Is it some kind of bad experience in the past? I just wanted to post this question in case someone had a good answer.

I apologize for calling white a color for it call be of all colors or none at all. Better known as a shade.

One needs a break every now and then, even when one is working on his or her labor of love.

Thanks for the laughs, Marina. Look forward to learning more stuff I don’t yet know.

    “I have no special talents. I am only infinitely curious”;
    Albert Einstein

As the late professor explained, intelligence and the genius that results from it is a matter of inspiration, dedication and hard work. I appreciate and love you not because you are some Goddess born a master numerous alphabetical languages, but because of your limitless passion, dedication and hard work.

Thank you for all you have done Marina and best wishes to you.

Hello Marina!! I don’t mean to bother you, but I really just can’t believe this word is not in your list…! I can’t believe you’re not bombarded by requests for this one word… So, early in this new year, I’m going to ask you again…
Marina, will you please have an orgasm video…? Do it just for me, baby…? Ok, maybe I need to pass around a petition and have people request this word (BIG HINT to everyone reading this). But, with the oldest SLOGAN in business and tv being, “SEX SELLS”, I just can’t believe this word is not on the list. Let me guess… :?: You’re absolutely overly miffed by SO MANY requests for this one word that you’re rebelling, and refusing to have an ORGASM video… Is that it? Well, Marina… Let’s just do it and get it over with… and have an orgasm video…

You know you want to…

    • Hey dellforce, are you kidding me? Marina is just getting warmed up with 378 videos under her belt. She can’t be presenting the climax video before 1000 or maybe 10000 videos or so. You know, she has to take it slow and easy. Don’t want to spoil the surprise. Marina doesn’t pop a video just like that. Takes time you know.

What if she did the orgasm video, would you stay around for the following videos? Would you respect her in the mornnig? No? Look what you would miss. Hey, half the fun is getting there. Stay glued to the HotForWords Tube and you’ll get your’s coming.

  67. Those were great, Marina! And it really shows how much effort you put into making your videos just right. You are truly a treasure, a precious pearl.

    Marina makes mistakes?
    Naw…not our dear teacher!
    She’s an internet goddess, right?
No? Just a nice person doing hard work and lots of it?
And she makes mistakes every now and then and keeps on going!
That’s we love you, teacher, flaws and all.

    Here’s a word suggestion:
    PRESIDENT
is it related to the word
    RESIDENT
    (as in Primary RESIDENT)???

I’d like to request the word dumb-bells… it seems kinda oxymoronic to describe as dumb something that’s designed to make noise.

  71. billca951 says: 39

    Marina,
Keep up the good work. We all love our favorite philologist. Your out-takes were fun, but you’d have a lot more if you were a Sesquipedalian!

Here are two fun words for you to research:

Twaddle – I’ve never heard so much twaddle from him!

Bamboozle – I’ll keep him bamboozled while you get the car.

Dear совершенная Марина Орлова, I hope you have a nice, safe trip back to your home in California, and you get enough rest after traveling. It was nice to see the photos you posted on Twitter of the Presidetial Suite in the hotel. That’s probably the closest I’ll ever be to such accomodations!
I’ve stayed at cheap motels more often than a hotel. In the Army, I got to sleep in tents, woodframe barracks, Quonset huts, and cheap apartments. For me, it’s a treat to stay at a mid-level hotel like the Comfort Inn or the Marriott.
It also was nice of you to post another short video, even though you were away. You are very nice to your subscibers.
I dudn’t laugh very much at your out-takes. Instead, I was pronouncing words for you (as if you could hear them). “Con-temp-tu-ous”, “”A-byss”, etc. I’m glad you no longer say the word, “fudge” on your bloopers. Be more careful. If you keep blowing air through your lips, you might develop a pout on your lower lip, like Angelina Jolie has!

    Privet Marina,

The other day I had a conversation with a friend about the difference between “speak” and “talk”…. Both words make reference of the same action.

So I think while “speak” is more serious / formal, “talk” is rather informal… Is that right?

Would love to know about it.

    Yours truly,

    An in-take on haker:

A few hours ago, I went to the library and looked up haker in the Unabridged Oxford English Dictionary (OED):

    haker … . A fisherman or a fishing-boat engaged in catching hake.

1880 Harper’s Mag. Aug. 340/1 The man who fished for hake, and also his boat, was a ‘haker’.

  91. Wow! I learn a lot from this video. I just looked at my last video and I killed like 14 minutes of tape just trying to do an introduction to my next interview. I could not find any cut that was decent enough to use and I have to go re-shoot. Some days I’m just not in a perky mood at the time I have to film. I need to warm up more before I shoot I guess.

More power to you, hotforwords! :)

I like the word “hoax”… so request the word hoax. Interesting meaning & handy in scrabble & word games when you’re stuck with that “X” near the end.
Earlier, in your reply (to me) did you mean something like this?
Are you of age though? oops
I like the flame idea, would make an interesting, you might say “hot” background idea. Looks really good on M on the English Leather Magazine cover… what, was I innaccurate?
