Stern – View Magazine Spread
Here is a 2 page SPREAD that I have in a very popular magazine in Germany, owned by Stern – View Magazine with 150,000 circulation
Translated by
America’s Bastian Sick
Blue box: Marina’s lessons are a huge success on the internet, at least between men.
“Silence at the back” whispers she, as she fixes her decollete one more time in front of the camera, and begins with the lesson. (PedanticKarl’s Quiz: What HFW video are they referring to?)
Marina Orlova, 28, explains with a Russian accent the notion “antidisestablishmentarianism” – and millions of men are hung enraptured on her lips.
“Hot For Words”, the video clips, in which the “Blonde” with scarce outfits explains the meaning and origin of English words, have reached almost 10 million views per month on the Internet. She has a more gigantic fan community than the German “sprachpapst” (father of words) Bastian Sick. Indeed the reason for the great interest on Orlova can barely be the profound derivation of notions.
The Success Lady, who by the way now has a radio show and plans a TV format, seems to know exactly, what men are mostly interested in. That’s why for her first merchandising product she’s offering a calender on her website with erotic sexy pictures.

Don’t let those German guys sweet-talk you away.
We saw you first! USA. Jimj.
Marina, the phenomina that is you reminds me of Roger Daltry singing “I’m a [sensation!]” from the rock opera “Tommy”. I am currently corresponding with Russian girl, Anastasia. Too bad you are too famous to help us with some hot words! lol!!
It’s great that they did an article on you, though I don’t agree 100%.
Congratulations!
I am proud of you for all your successes, Marina! Always good to see you get positive ink.
and how did [spread] come to mean a two-page magazine layout?…
In the next few years , Hotforwords tv will be the most viewed tv show in the world
Oh! My [Liege]! I hope I was not too forward in [discerning] a [call-to-arms] I felt within the post and spreading it to all the other Knights Orlova out there!
wow really ? Next time a US ship stops by Malaysia i’m visiting their ship to see if there are Marina calendars
Hmm … Marina … spread … Hmm
What about the lesbians? Don’t count them out. That’s all I’m saying.
Marina-
Congratulations!
How many different countries/languages have written articles about you?
The promo video that PendanticKarl is making about you is gaining length.
Maybe he’ll have to make a mini-series.
great mini-series in mimi-skirt sweet as a wild rose
Yay! Just got the email notification for this post!
The notification timestamp says 10:39pm PST which is in line
with the timestamp of the first comments (below).
It only just posted to my eMail at 8:04pm EST…
21.5 hrs … is that lag time normal?
Makes more sense to send ‘em out a day in advance
Congratulations on your continued recognition and success!
I don’t know if anyone has told you this, but you are a very attractive woman. If I were single, 100 lbs. lighter, had lots of hair on my head instead of my back, was twenty years younger, had a hot car, a great job, and smelled a lot better, I think we would really hit it off. I like words, just like you, and have used them most of my adult life. And I also know two phrases in Russian, neither of which I can post here. As it is, I am simply a grumpy old man with a total lack of personality. You however, really have a nice one, and I just wanted you to know I appreciate your videos. Watching them makes it possible to pretend I have friends. God bless, dear Marina, and have a scrumptious day!
Hmm, I have the car, the job, do smell better, I’m divorced, and still have more hair on my head then my back (albeit, it’s getting close). Although I could use the losing of 80 lbs and being 15 years younger… Maybe I should give it a shot with the beautiful and intelligent Marina
Hey maxpappy,I’m only 20-30LBs overweight but other than that We sound the same,,are You My half-twin brother?
The version of pedantickarl is very good:) I tried to emphasize what the reporter was pointing out hence there might be a slight difference between the translations..
Thank you jayjay_21,
I liked your translation which held more to a strict literal word for word translation. In other words, the same as I would do if I were literally translating as a first phase. The second phase would be correcting the awkward grammatical structure, which I didn’t do, but certainly my translation can be cleaned up as well as choosing different words as would be implied in the sentence, which you mentioned below.
Canned rats! Lady M. “Nice spread ya got there, Ma’am.” This international status of yours is pretty cool. I hope all your hard work brings you happiness and fulfillment.
(As if it were a big deal to see her topless again… but still, a nipple on Marina’s website!)
I went with jayjay_21’s translation as it’s more accurate. PedanticKarl was looking out for me with his kind translation
I changed erotic pics to sexy as the calendar pics are not “erotic”. Perhaps that word doesn’t translate to English the same way?
Actually the word goes both ways in German, the meaning is implied on it from the sentence. However the reporter was aiming to the physical aspects of the videos on his/her whole article. It is obviously another strategy to sell more by creating an image of “erotic” pictures in the minds of many.
Orlova: “Diese Herangehensweise ist eine Mischung aus locken und bekehren und scheint gut zu funktionieren.”
(LINK)
I thought the 2 words were synonymous?
Remember the quote not so long ago
difference between porn and erotica is lighting
Whichever…I had to take mine down at work so you must be doing something right. I am merely appreciating it at home now.
bastian sick sucks. big time. and he definitely ain’t the fucking father of words.
just saying.
for those who speak german: fucking click.
alec.. I went with jayjay_21’s translation.. is it accurate?
Hey what happened to our early replies? Just asking.
uh huh.
(to) [dovetail] (v). see karl’s comment below.
Hey alex, I read your article which is very good. I don’t know Bastian Sick and only know him via wiki which also pointed out some criticisms of his works.
I liked your use of the “sprachtyrann” (language tyrant) referring to people who only know “good” or “bad”, “right” or “wrong” referring to “good German” or correct grammar. Of course that dovetails to all of those discussions you had here on HFW back in early 2008.
I know where you come from and that is a subject that fascinates me, but it is not my area of expertise. You point out some interesting things which gives me food for thought.
my reply disappeared also.
Congratulations Miss Orlova
Is The Adventure of English: The Biography of a Language by Melvyn Bragg factually correct, or full of things made up by the author? (I suspect it is erroneous.)
[Examples to show Shakespeare's influence on English] (e.g., heard that the use of the double negative for emphasis started with him; also heard that a lot of modern English has been influenced by his works, but have no clue what that might mean).
Good Morning Everyone.
My first language is German, but maybe I should revise that and say it was German as I no longer speak with an accent and have forgotten a lot. My pseudo translation will be non-literal to capture the essence of article. Subjective of course.
It was 4 AM PST awhile ago, so if I mess up in the German translation, it’s not my fault.
As Marina pointed out above, the View Magazine is owned by Stern. (means star). It appears to be a monthly magazine leaning towards photos, having a huge repository of photos from nature, animals to erotic art and photos. At the top, the front of the magazine in orange it says; “The Best Pictures of the Month”.
The right panel at the top showing most of Marina, is in a section called; “People of the Month”.
First, before I translate, I’d like to zoom in on a few words.
Bastian Sick is a German born journalist who wrote for ‘Der Spiegel’ magazine, the same magazine that covered Marina back in Nov 08, and who studied history and Romance philology.
The word “Dekolleté” refers to, dress with a low cut neckline or strapless dress, and sometimes tongue in cheek inferring cleavage.
The last sentence in the article, as some have done so below, literally translated, could be, “…calendar – with erotic pictures”. Anyone that has Marina’s calendar knows that the HotForWords photos are gorgeous and captivating and enticing and anything but erotic. A better translation might be, “steamy” or maybe “amorous”.
In the blue box it says (non-literal):
Marina Orlova’s classroom is a smash hit on the Internet, especially for the men.
The article starts out with an exclamation (non-literal);
Quiet in the last row! As she quietly exclaims and adjust her low cut dress in front of the camera, as the class is just starting.
My entry:
Quiz: What HFW video are they referring to?
As Marina Orlova, 28, declares in a Russian accent the lesson on Antidisestablishmentarianism, a million men are enraptured and hang on to every word on her lips.
In the video clips, in which the blond with tight outfits and with a degree, intelligently explains the meaning of English words to millions of viewers month after month. She has that mass appeal that can also be found in the German “father of the words”, Bastian Sick.
Certainly, the interest in her profound knowledge and keen teaching concepts make her a mass appeal for which many seek her out.
This successful woman, who in between videos, moderates a radio show and has plans for a program for a TV format, where she shines and knows what interests men the most. The first product that was offered on her website was a calendar with steamy photos.
-a favourable translation-
and just before the title it says: Intelligence is sexy is the motto of the internet show HFW
Are you wearing your official coat of arms on the plaid mini skirt?
{Automatic high five & five more down low }

Indeed the reason for the great interest on Orlova can barely be the profound derivation of notions.
The Success Lady, who by the way now has a radio show and plans a TV format, seems to know exactly, what men are mostly interested in. Thats why for her first merchandising product she’s offering a calender on her website with erotic pictures.
A rough translation:
1st pic: Teacher (actually aiming something like teachful): Marina explains that the word “quintessence” stems from the latin notion of the legendary fifth element.
2nd pic: dangerous: the outfits of the educated linguist and etymologist are not only “hotly” discussed in academic content
3rd pic: Self-directed: Marina shoots up to seven shows weekly – all alone. This gives her the freedom what she wants to do
4th pic: career push: In the mean time Marina is a regular guest in TV-Talkshows. She is also planning her own TV-format.
Folks,
Producers of Radio and TV shows usually invite their audience to suggest guests for their shows. Web-sites for most shows have forms for making such suggestions. I don’t really know what producers do with these suggestions — but they do ask for them! So if you would like to have HFW on a show, filling out such forms might help.

.
Good for you Marina! Odd that they do a spread on you but do not provide you with a translation! (Why the works of Shakespeare as a prop?)

I hope “Bastian Sick” is a good thing. How do you find out these things? Congrats Marina… you’re a multinational brand… unt yah “Hotforwords”
Hey Billy, congrats on being number one.
How do you find out these things? Ask a German.
Check out my translation up above, and let me know what you think.
What happened to my earlier post?(comments)
and for request word [churlish], it was used by Ann Coulter ” Here’s a small sampling of the churlishness in just The New York Times:”, in reporting about the inauguration. Also, I had to look up the word in reading “Fathers and Sons” thanks and keep up the good work
Oh, nevermind…another big little word [discontentment and civility]
good work, pedanticKarl…”word power”
