Congratz to the Steelers! Better luck next year Cards, it was an amazing game.

I agree with hotrocky, sports are for children(who are athletically inclined) and overly competitive, lesser intelligent adults. Sure, there’s nothing wrong with a bunch of grown jocks getting together to play a pick-up game, but the pursuit of knowledge and/or the betterment of the human race is infinitely more important!Anyways, Lady Marina—you are the PINNACLE of academic (as well as[sounds repetitive, right?] human) evolution, hands down! It’s truly an honor and a privilege to be one of your students.

    • g-lanks says: 116.1

There is a lot of hate coming from that reply. Do you have some sort of scarring memory? Always picked last in dodgeball?
Sports are team games where you learn friendship, teamwork and hard work. Not to mention setting goals. Ken Dryden was an amazing goalie in the NHL and also got a degree in university. One must be sound in body and mind so why can’t you do both? I am sure that Marina stays physically active. Why is competition such a bad thing? Is that not what brings the best out of some people in sports AND academics? What are scholarships? And why would a scholarship be any different from a college draft?
It just seems to me like you have no right to post insults and then praise Marina. Focus your energy on being more intelligent and less ignorant.

    It just occurred to me…
How does one posses two diplomas in the same field?
I’d like to know how to get two of my own in Computer Science, since I’m close to finishing up on my first. So how do I do that?
The only thing that would sound better would be Doctor of Science.
But I don’t plan on going that far, at least not yet. Maybe when I’ll be 40ish, now I just want to live my life more, and study less :)

  10. OK but what mean Magedo Hill. And lett Hotforword explain it to me.

  11. Tomasz says: 107

Armageddon comes from the Bible, it’s Hebraic word for “Megido Hill” or “Magedo Hill”.

BTW: ” LEG – one of a pair of matches played between the same opponents in a sports competition, which together form a single round (= stage) of the competition”. I still would like to know – why leg!? Maybe it’s easy for British, Americans etc., but English is not my native language and I don’t understand, why do you call a round like a leg.

  12. Can pleas you tell me what armageddon mean and were it comes from.

  13. Another great day! It’s absolutely short-sleeve weather. Blue sky, sun shining, 2 knots wind, birds twittering (they have Blackberries now, you know) and the USGC’s C-130 spooling up in the background over at McClellan. Gad, I feel sorry for youse guys huddled around a 40-watt bulb for survival.

    Yeah, reeeeeeal sorry.

  14. Can you tell me what armageddon mean and were it comes from.

  15. hmmm…since i don’t remember seeing this in the vid, here’s the origin of cardinal:

“one of the ecclesiastical princes who constitute the sacred college,” from L. cardinalis “principal, chief, essential,” from cardo (gen. cardinis) “that on which something turns or depends,” originally “door hinge.” Ecclesiastical use began for the presbyters of the chief (cardinal) churches of Rome. The adj. sense of “chief, principal” in Eng. is attested from c.1440. Cardinal numbers (1591) are the primitive “one, two, three,” etc. as opposed to ordinal numbers “first, second, third,” etc. Cardinal points (1549) are “north, south, east, west.” The cardinal virtues (c.1300) were divided into natural (justice prudence, temperance, fortitude) and theological (faith, hope, charity).

now isn’t it interesting that a Cardinal is a door hinge?…

    hallo Marina!!!!
My teacher at my English lessons told this word but i can’t understand it  The word is [nomophobia]
I wonder if you know the origin of this word???
    thank you!!!

    • Chemikal says: 99.1

      Good word axy!
I tend to get clingy to my phone as well, but I won’t call it nomophobia. A phobia implies that I should have an irrational fear of something, but I just get pissed, when my battery dies.
I don’t fear not having my phone around, so what does this word really mean? Huh, I hope she investigates your word soon :)

I am not rooting for any team. It’s my sincere opinion that sports, with the possible exception of motorsports, is a silly waste of time and resources. The money, time and effort that’s wasted on grown men chasing balls around could have been used to find the cure for cancer and herpes and put a human on Mars. People spending millions on sports while children starve is an abomination.

Don’t get me wrong. I don’t hate the Steelers for the Immaculate Reception. That was just one of those plays. It’s not hate. I’m just mildly ‘adverse’ to them… with respect, since they’ve been a great team over the years. Anyhow, I’m rooting for the Cards. Go Cardinals. Hey, if it was the Steelers versus the Broncos or Patriots, I’d easily root for the Steelers.

  30. dolphinbite says: 81

    Pop Quiz!

A bunch of guys who should really know better spend an hour pounding each other to near oblivion while chasing a bouncing oblate spheroid around on a field. At the end of the hour, the entropy of the universe has :

    A) Increased.
    B) Decreased.
    C) Stayed the same.
    D) This Pop Quiz is stupid, go away.

The answer is given on page 22.
    .
    flip
    .
    flip
    .

    page 22)
The answer to the question, setting aside various possible ontological objections and intrinsic ambiguity in the definition of “universe” is A). Yes, the conehead cabal does profess that the entropy of the putative “universe” is always increasing, independent of Superbowl(s) or outcome(s) thereof, Russian Bride ads, and words 99.9% of the population has never heard of! At least, this was the answer to the question when I took chem 101… it was the one repeating question on every exam which every student had the chance to get right!

ps RIP John Updike, wordsmith extraordinaire.

    • Chemikal says: 78.1

I had a lot of fun with this quiz, thanks for sharing! :)
You called the universe putative, and also put it in brackets.
That means you don’t believe the universe exists!
I have solid proof that the universe exists and is not putative!

      It’s real I tell you! :D

      • Thanks, glad you liked it! :) As I was scribbling this piece I was struck with a mini epiphany … I have no freakin’ clue what “universe” is supposed to mean and/or encompass (all of space-time? all of the purported 12 or 13 1/2 dimensions of string theory and reality itself?). The term “putative” here was used in the sense of “so-called” while referring to a simplified “classic universe” abstraction in the closed-universe sense the various physicists/cosmologists have historically liked to kick around while confusing both themselves and everybody around them with wild butt-pull theories. I dug the “bizarro universe” in Superman and the machine simulated universe in “The Matrix” … if we’re gonna get creative let the real creative genius types (comic book writers and screenwriters) take over please.

        • What about the M.I.B. version of the universe? :)
They compared us with rats living in a locker of some higher being’s reality.

I like that idea, because reality is only what you can perceive!
Take dogs for example, they don’t know that colors exists, because they only see in back and white.

Just think of all the things that are out there, and we can’t see because we are limited by our human condition.

Or better yet, don’t think about it, because you probably won’t even understand it, while having nothing to go on but the idea of something invisible existing along us, but just outside of our grasp!

I remember a quote that was once on HFW: “There are no facts, only interpretations.” – Friedrich Nietzsche
I will go ahead and make an adaptation, you can quote me on it: “There is no reality, only perception.” – Chemikal :)

          • Yeah, but they do have x-ray vision – that’s why they don’t bother wearing any clothes.

          • Yeah, I like the MIB flavor universe also. The more creative and wild and bizarro it gets the better. I dug the bug quote near the end after failing to make off with the little mini-universe pendant from Orion’s belt… the bug wouldn’t concede defeat …. “YOU IDIOTS!!!…. I WON!!!”. El Laffo. :) I also thought the universe animation at the closing of this movie was hyper-creative, if that be a proper word.

I like your quote! Hotforphilosophy is IN!

    • I choose D. No matter how hard they chase the ball, the energy expended (or any other aspect of the game) matters little to the universe as a whole. Even the proverbial butterfly on the other side of the earth will not say, “WTF was that?”

      • I spy existential philosophy! :)

        Personality Classification vs. Answer :

        A) Engineer or lucky guesser
        B) Engineer….NOT! or bad guesser
        C) Generalized Wishy-washy type, or “when-in-doubt-C” practitioner
        D) Existentialist or generalized no-BS type person.

        • Behavior and humanisms is and are the forces of hate and love. I will steal from you if I am hungry; only because you taken the food I gave you. Reasons will keep the seasons and build the store and not the hordings. peace out of pie(free cake)

          • Love and Hate : fundamental to the evolution of the selfish gene, far more general in nature than “Homo Sapien” specific attributes. Without selfish hate the strong Lion does not keep the wimp Lion from reproducing his genes… in very short order there are too many wimpodite Lions running around, they are not strong enough to survive Nature and the Lions go extinct. Without maternal love the Mama bear does not protect her cubs from the hazards of Nature (including foremost Daddy Bear) and if the progeny do not survive with a high enough probability the result is the same, exit Bears stage left. (note football theme adhered to with Lions and Bears just to be consistent. Note also that both the Lions and Bears exited stage left this year :)

Food : fundamental necessary ingredient for survival of any species; strong genes fight for and win the food to survive into the future (win food + win mate = survive gene into future). Couple some bad aspects of human psyche on top and you start to get some nasty side effects like greed and hoarding. Intelligence might be sexy to some but it can also be vicious and cruel as all hell in competition for finite resources; potentially even self defeating if the negative side effects of high intelligence dominate to the point that it undermines the entire underlying force of gene propagation. If this happens Nature will just shrug and say whoops that was a bad mutation, and continue down some other path into the future minus that Homo putative “Sapien”. Food, money, power, land amount to the same drive force in selfish (gene) hate/greed driven competition for finite resources. No Free Cake in Nature! (with the unfortunate implication of No Peace either :( )

I don’t mean by this commentary to give intelligence or the human pysche a bad rap across the board. Attributes of compassion and integrity are some of the positive aspects of humans which oppose the selfish forces. There are good and bad sides to almost everything.

        • andromeda(78.2.1.1.1February 2, 2009 at 8:17 pm): I like what you wrote(those numbers are new codes of the Republic of Lexicon, The Capital and hometown, Etymology) If bears and lions make you write; how about ravens and packers?…most likely all the same…saints and cowboys?…pirates and bosses   keep up the bright comments

  34. Hey y’all! Since we are focusing on the Super Bowl, and the ads are [front and center], an attraction in themselves, who here remembers what “blipverts” refers to?

  35. hs4mm says: 74

    .

The transition at 0:36 is as follows:

Hence the name of the team was born Cardinals the birds …

In the above, the word Cardinals does double duty: it is the last word of the preceding sentence and the first word of the next sentence! One might argue that the preceding sentence ends with the word “born”, but I think the thought being expressed is “Hence, the team was named the Cardinals.” — and so the preceding sentence ends with the word Cardinals.

That is a quick transition. It makes me curious to see what the effect would be if transition were made slower as follows:

Hence the name of the team was born Cardinals. (pause) Cardinals, the birds …

“The use of COBOL cripples the mind – its teaching should, therefore, be regarded as a criminal offense.” – Edsgar Dijkstra 1930-2002

    Awesome quote! I have to agree… :)

My favorite soccer team is Dinamo Bucharest. That’s the only sport I call simply football. :P

    • Evan Owen says: 65.1

When I studied COBOL, we called it the “language of writer’s cramp.”

    • neuroway says: 65.2

COBOL cripples the mind? Its teaching should be regarded as a criminal offense?

Blimey! If this language is indeed such a lame piece of crap, this quote makes it more interesting! I never used COBOL before, but I think it might be quite a funny, mind-teasing and agreeable programming language to learn!

“I have tamed men of iron in my day, shall I not easily crush these men of butter?” – Ferdinand Álvarez De Toledo, Duke of Alba (1507 – 1582)

      • /*

Taming is one thing, and crushing, well that’s another story.
I suggest you learn something more worthwhile, like Java! :P

        */

        • Java you say? No no no. And no! 1,000 times NO!

I have decided to learn COBOL. Yes, COBOL it will be!

          • Interesting…

Why do you think people who want to learn COBOL are sadomasochists?

          • Because it is the language of that vicious game football.

            Chase
            Obloid
            Ball
            Over
            Land

          • Ahahaaaa! Yesssir! Yesss! I do believe enlightenment is finally coming through my thick leather skull, and sparks of knowledge are slowly imbibing my spongeous barbaric brain! I just hope it won’t saturate any time soon, as I feel a little wisdom-drunk right now. *hic*! Why, oh why am I such a moron?

Yes, it is quite obvious indeed. People who want to learn COBOL are sadomasochists because it is the language of that vicious game football.

Why didn’t I think of that before? I understand a lot more about COBOL and football now, thanks to you two. And I am going to plunge myself into Java books. Arrivederci bambini I will be busy like a bee! Chemikal, CampKohler, I do stand corrected, but fortunately I feel I am now walking on the right track, following you two folks on the highway of the wisemen.

  71. hs4mm says: 33

    .

    Hello Marina,

[This is an idea for a potential lesson concerning the birth (origin) not of a word but of a mind: water. I do not really know if a lesson can be created based on the following idea, but -- you are ingenious -- and so I would like to offer it for your consideration.]

The basis for the idea is a particular scene from the movie The Miracle Worker (1962 version). While a baby, Helen Keller (played Patty Duke) becomes deaf and is growing up to be unruly. Anne Sullivan (played by Anne Bancroft) is hired as a care taker. Anne does not want to merely care for Helen the way one would care for an animal — Anne actually wants to teach Helen to think. Helen learns to spell words through a sign language — but Helen treats words as a parrot would — just arbitrary sounds with no meaning/referents. Then one day, Helen finally understands that W-A-T-E-R means the liquid she feels flowing out of a hand-pump! There is a very dramatic scene in the movie that shows Helen grasping what W-A-T-E-R really means — that scene depicts the birth (origin) not of a word but of a mind.

Even if the scene cannot be used in a lesson, even if [water] is not a good word to explain on HFW, that movie is excellent to watch!

What can be more exciting to watch than the dramatized birth of a mind?

 If the Dallas Cowboys are not playing in the Super Bowl, then I don’t watch it on TV. On Sunday, I’ll be pigging out at a good eatry, take in a movie, then hang out in a video store. I’ll find out in Monday’s paper who won the game. And that is the name of that tune!!

  74. Great video Marina. Had me glued to your every word. Loved the bloopers at the end.

I don’t have a favorite team, and I suppose I would be rooting for the perennial [underdog].

Now, interestingly, it is being reported that the Steelers are being favorited by 6.5 points, but the readers voting at the Baltimore Sun newspaper have the Cardinals in the lead with votes. Maybe there will be another major upset.

Speaking of votes, don’t forget to vote for Marina as Sexiest Geek in the dotted cardinal colored box at the top.

  75. I´d like to request the word: [police]
    Chau!!!

  76. It is about time that the Nashville Buckaroos win. I haven’t seen them win a Suberpowl yet! When I was younger, I rooted for the Chicago Blackdogs… but that was before that “in 1814 we took a little trip” song.

    Hi, Marina.
I would like to know the origin of the word [caucasian] and if it has any relation with the Caucasus Mountains.
    Thanks, bye.

  81. I am an out cast. I don’t like foot ball. So I don’t care for either team.
    Great video.

  82. I bet that that one team wins.

But wot? Cardinals now? Huh? Little flying red birds? Really? Damnit Teacher! That’s a football team? Really? The oldest one? Erm.. Hold on. Easy now. We can’t charge into little birds like that. I guess there must be another way to catch’em. A little more wisdom and a touch of agility is needed.

Hwk: Neither, I don’t care who wins any professional sporting event. Not to rain too hard, I mean if I’m watching I pull for one team over another usually and use to really love playing…But, Marina you’re wrong: when a team plays itself it’s called a scrimmageGeez.

  85. pandion says: 18

I am not a big fan of either team, but I hope the Cardinals win. They are due.

  86. popzzz says: 17

Hmmmmmmmm ….. if you [predict] one team will win out of two that would be fifty percent chance of being correct …..

So I will predict with one hundred percent (100%) [accuracy] that either one or the other team will win!

  87. John says: 14

Marina, The two teams were merged in1944 for a year; huh; sports trivia. Is there anything you can’t do well?

  88. John says: 13

Cardinals if i watch it at all, Not much of a fan of pro football i much prefer college football better. Probably the west coast is going to support the Cardinals and the east coast the Steelers.

Your looking lovely as always Marina.

Dear совершенная Марина Орлова, Nice of you to post a video early, today, and you look grand in that cardinal red dress! Will you wear that dress again on Sunday? :?: Or, will you wear a dress that’s steel grey? :?:
It would be nice if the Cardinals would win on Sunday, because they’ve never been to a Superbowl, before. To bad Patrick Tillman, a former player for the Cardinals, didn’t live to see the day the Cardinals were in the Superbowl. I actually think the Steelers will win on Sunday, but we can’t be certain. They actually have to play well to win the game.
For the game, I’ll have vegetable soup, turkey sandwiches, carrot sticks, oranges, bananas, and even some blackberries! I hope you will enjoy the game, too!

  90. I’m not exactly a football fan. Not exactly a fan of any sport so I never root for anyone. My dad runs a football and superbowl pool at work and puts me in a few boxes so I guess you could say I root for me to win.

Homework  I’m rooting for the Cardinals but if the Steelers win it won’t bother me. None of my favorite teams are in the Super Bowl!

    From Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaime_Cardinal_Sin:

Jaime Cardinal Sin, also Jaime Lachica Cardinal Sin (August 31, 1928–June 21, 2005) (Chinese name: 辛海梅; 辛海棉 Xīn Hǎiméi; Xīn Hǎimián), was an archbishop of the Roman Catholic Church in the Philippines. He led the Archdiocese of Manila as its archbishop and was later made cardinal by Pope Paul VI…

His name should not be confused with “cardinal sin”, which is synonymous for the seven deadly sins, and it has also been the source of many jokes in the Philippines revolving around him such as “The greatest sin of all…Cardinal Sin” or “Welcome to the House of Sin” referring to his Church.
