SPIEGEL – Top Girls of YouTube
Article in German Spiegel Online about the Top Girls of YouTube.
Here it is run through the Google Translator (which doesn’t translate very well.)
They mention some of my other favorite YouTubers: VenetianPrincess, communitychannel, panacea81 and HappySlip.

Regarding the Sexy Geek page, does ‘clicking the down-arrow’ really do anything?
P.S. You’d think that she would tell you how to make that link seem more like part of the conversation sometime, what with the word-use degree … oh well …

love your quotes babe you should move em up to the top of the page. btw when valentines day i don’t keep up with that shit.
you are a super babe.
Hey Marina,
this article has a second part which is specially about you. Did you notice? It seem geo74 translated it.
Great article, where Marina’s coverage is on page 2of the 4 page article.
Regarding the translation of the 2nd page which is all about Marina, the first paragraph on that page is not a bad translation, however I might chose different words to reflect the context.
The word “unwahrscheinlich” can be translated as “most unlikely” as the Google translator did, but I don’t get that from the context of the first paragraph. My choice of translation would have been “fantastic”.
The next word “Sprachlehrerin” was translated as teacher. Literally translated, it would be, “Teacher of Speaking” which refers to “Language Teacher”, but in context, I would translate it to, teacher of language or teacher of words.
Now, here is how I would translate (transliterate) that first sentence.
Google said:
“Marina Orlova is probably the most unlikely teacher in the world.”
I would say:
“Marina Orlova is no doubt the most fantastic teacher of words in the world.”
My transliteration has a much better feel to it, don’t you think?
The second and third paragraphs are much harder to translate via software due to the author’s use of idioms and colloquial expressions.
gio74 did a good job of translating down below.
I am afraid “unwahrscheinlich” in that context really means “unlikely”, although I perfectly agree that “fantastic” would be more adequate for Marina. But let´s face it: how many geeks do look as beautiful as Marina? So in fact she is not the classical stereotype of a teacher of languages. “Intelligence is sexy” is definitely true HERE!
Hi gio74, you are correct, about the translation of the word “unlikely” and I also agree with you about how many geeks look as beautiful as Marina, referring to the “unlikely” part, etc.
That’s why I used the word transliterating in my last paragraph because I felt the author just didn’t write that paragraph as well as it could have been written. It is more of a critique of the style of writing and I understand that in magazine journalism, the authors don’t have time to please me to no end.
The paragraph rubbed me the wrong way in both German and English. I guess, for “fast food” style of writing, it’ll have to do.
That reminds me of a time a friend’s house was broken into and the local newspaper reported the event as;
“A burglary occurred on Main St. …. and the burglar entered the house through an open door”, despite the police report showing evidence of large amounts of destruction of two doors and door jambs. That was not a good week for that writer and the newspaper stopped reporting details about crimes about which they have no clues.
I’m sensitive to certain types of errors in writing and I can understand how celebrities feel when what is reported about them is ever so slightly askew.
Indeed, “Intelligence is sexy” and as a perpetual student, I am a sponge in learning something new here every day.
Devochka Silovikee
great
Canned rats! Lady M.
However, she explains openly also that she got the idea of HotforWords while she was unemployed. Now she is definitely not anymore: the clever lady earns a living with HotforWords, media appearances, advertising on her website and the income from the sale of her not-so-linguistic model calendar. Since lonelygirl15 Youtube wan never managed and exploited so successfully to reach the public audience and get into the business. I take my hat off!
Marina, it looks you are keeping Germany really busy dealing ith your success!! It means a lot of mroe work for me
Out of joke, I am glad you get the attention you deserve!!
Here what you were all waiting for: the TRANSLATION!
============
2) HotforWords – one who knows what she wants
Marina Orlova is actually the most unlikely language teacher in the world. Her Youtube channel is in the top 20 of the most successful channels ever, it counts presently 161 million views – and that with short clips, where it is all about linguistics issues. Usually that’s not the kind of stuff that makes you jump out of your chair. The idea is successful because it has two features that have a lot of impact in Internet: it’s sexy and – even more important – really ironic. That a curvaceous woman, usually dressed just barely enough, with obvious pronounciation problems teaches the subtleties of the English language to Americans like a sort of friendly linguistics dominatrix, shows a certain amount of inherent humour. In her interview in Spiegel ONLINE Orlova stated firmly that she does all that because she feels an educational task: “Nowadays it would be certainly not easy to find so many people interested in philology and etymology. That’s why I decided to awaken their attention with my look. When they click my videos they learn something and suddenly they get interested also in etymology.”
Sparse, very sparse – but then again, it’s all good
Congratulations! Another feather for your cap
