I consider myself Successful, because I requested this word perhaps 12 to 15 months ago and now that my request has been answered.

    thank-you very much.

[IT'S ALL ABOUT THE BENJAMINS] IS THE AMERICAN WAY! But I have learned to take personal satisfaction in things that money cannot buy-my bible study, spiritual experiecnes, trying to begin to figure out CLASSICAL GAS on accoustic guitar, having collected 200-300 Radio Verification Cards from around the world. Completing studies of seven Old Testament Bible Prophets plus Revelation! I think of people in POW camp movies or prison movies and the little acheivements that make their day. Some due to my poor health, some due to hate from others. But here is a fun word in my vocabulary [DOOMSDAY]! I made a photo book last year of some of the high points of last year-my gladioulus garden for mom, my first two ebooks getting published, putting 20 years of past bible studies in Sterlite boxes. It almost sounds like a Bob Seeger song THESE ARE THE MEMORIES THAT MAKE ME A WEALTHY SOUL!

i wouldn’t consider myself successful just yet. what i mean is there are some goals i hope to accomplish this summer. one of those things is to finish my book. yes the ranting zinnaku is writing a book. when i finish it and it sell decently, and i lose the weight i want to lose, then i would consider myself successful.

  4. Lookin good… Happy Valentine’s Day ! Success to some is keepin up wit da Jones; which is kinda tough living in Hollywood paying 25$ per hr. for a parking space and Washington Fat-cats live like stars.

Not all success is a matter of money. Lately I have succeeded in protecting my tenant’s rights after a winter where the heating system went out and the landlord neglected to fix it. I not only succeeded in hiring my own person who successfully replaced a defective part, I also took a deduction for that repair when I paid rent, and when the landlord tried to evict me and also to raise my rent after the repair, I also hired a legal advisor who wrote a “cease and desist letter.” The legal advisor also has told me how to achieve success in enforcing my rights which are well protected in California when there have been habitability issues. Ah, success!

Dylan put it best in “Love minus zero no limit”

“In the dime stores and bus stations
    People talk of situations
    Read books repeat quotations
    Draw conclusions on the wall
    Some speak of the future
    My love she speaks softly
She knows there’s no success like failure
And that failure’s no success at all”

  16. Marina says: 103

OK.. sorry .. trying to figure out this code for my website so that it doesn’t show a page with only one comment. (ie: minimum number of comments per page)

    http://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/paginate_comments_links

I don’t know how to put the arguments in the tag.

    Arrgghh… going to the gym..

    • hs4mm says: 103.1

      .

First, there is a minor bug in the system: Page 1 has comments from 0 to 24, Page 2 has comments from 26 to 50. What happened to 25? (I say “minor bug” because it shouldn’t be hard to fix.)

Anyway, because of the bug, the following is not precisely accurate, but it illustrates the ideas.

Not sure how much tweaking you do to CodePress; so the following may or may not help.

      Suppose

      ---------------------------------------

Comments are numbered from 0 to (T-1)

T = total number of comments (=103+1=104 now)
P = comments per page (set to 25 now)

Then N = the number of pages needed will be:

      N = (int)( ( T + P - 1 ) / P )

      ---------------------------------------

At present, the systems allocates comments to pages starting from page 1, as follows:

      ---------------------------------------

      Display of page k (1 <= k <= N) will have
      comment starting from

      (k-1)*P

      and ending at

      (k * P) - 1 (when k < N)
      or (T - 1) (when k = N)

and the number of comments on page k will be

      P (when k < N)
      or (T % P) (when k = N, % is remainder function)

      ---------------------------------------

What you would like the system to do is to allocate comments to pages starting from the last page. So the parameters would be:

      continued in 103.2 …
      .

    • hs4mm says: 103.2

      .

      continuing from 103.1

What you would like the system to do is to allocate comments to pages starting from the last page. So the parameters would be:

      ---------------------------------------

      Display of page k (1 <= k 1)
      0 (when k = 1)

      and ending at

      T - (N-k)*p (when k > N)
      or (T % P) - 1 (when k = 1, % is remainder function)

and the number of comments on page k will be

      P (when k > 1)
      or (T % P) (when k = 1)

      ---------------------------------------

In the above, the formulas are written in two lines (e.g., one line k1 and another for k=1). It is possible to write them as single line formulas using conditionals.

Is the above within or outside the scope of the CodePress tweaking you perform?

      –Hs4Mm

    • James says: 103.4

Do you want me too see what I can do? Whats having paged comments in aid of anyway? I think it will be a pain in theass going through all those comments.

    • hs4mm says: 103.5

      .

Another option would be to ask a question along the following lines in the WordPress Forum:

At present, when comments are organized from newest at top to oldest at the bottom and pagination is turned on, the systems allocates comments to pages starting from page 1. This results in the last page (the page that has the most recent comments) being partially filled. How would one get the system to allocate comments starting from the last page (so as to ensure that the last page with newest comments is always full)? See discussion at the site here: http://www.hotforwords.com/2009/02/10/success/comment-page-5/#comment-110191

      –Hs4Mm

    • hs4mm says: 103.6

      .

Another thought: It might be OK to organize “Recent Comments” chronologically. In such a case, its page 1 might be full of extracts of the latest comments (with the extract of the most recent comment at the bottom of its page 1).

      –Hs4Mm

    • Curse at it a few times it always works for me.

    • hs4mm says: 103.8

input code does not show up properly — will send info by different method

    • I really do hope the you are not going to pages in the comments. That is an absolute bummer. One spends all day clicking and waiting for pages to load, which is a real pain. And if anything goes wrong with ads or something else that is called, it just adds to the wait for each page and you can’t search across page boundaries. If it is to overcome a huge list of comments, then I see nothing to overcome; I can zip up and down the comments at will.

Perhaps you are trying to overcome a slow loading time for someone on dial-up or maybe some small device. If so, they should have a personal preference to choose pages if they want, but please don’t saddle the rest of us with it. (Oh, to heck with the rest of us; don’t saddle me with it. )

  21. hs4mm says: 98

    .

    1) Would it be possible to support all comments in one page, either with an “All” button, or by having individual users specify a preference in their profile?

    2) Font and/or icons in “Recent Comments” has become bigger — so the amount of information in that column has reduced. Would it be possible to support seeing more entries?

    3) After pressesing “Login to Reply” to a comment and logging in, one is redirected to the top of the page; would it be possible to be redirected to somewhere near the comment one used for logging in?

    4) As I am writing this comment, went to the dashboard and saw that Marina is saying something … haven’t seen it yet.

    Thanks,

    –Hs4Mm

  25. Hello Capman911, CK, John, PageDoll, hs4mm, etc:
    Regarding:
The positioning of the YT video playback head.

Capman911’s time code appears to be correct on the surface:
    youtube/video_id#t=2m20s

This format #t=XmYYs has these results:
    Notice single digit minute format.
    FF – works
    SeaMonkey – fails
    MSIE 6 – fails
iPhone – works <– iPhone rocks!!!

This format #t=XXmYYs has these results:
Notice the 2 digit minute format
    FF – works
    SeaMonkey – works
    MSIE 6 – works
    iPhone – works

So, try Mike’s link again with the leading zero in the minutes.

  27. I would like to make a word request. Seeing your video of the Bill O’Reilly show reminded me of the sexual harassment scandal he had a while back. Without going into vulgar, disgusting details, there seems to be something called a “falafel” involved. So, I just wanted to know, Marina, what’s a “falafel”, and why does that man want to use it as a sex toy? Perhaps, that’s a question you could ask him on your next television appearance. I feel it’s important that we all remember that he is disgusting and repulsive. By the way, he seems to be partial to soap suds also, but I already know what those are. This may help you to understand why his eye contact tends to drop about 8 inches below your eyes.

  28. Marina,

    [SCORE]

Not so long ago, score meant making a point, goal, touchdown, etc. in a sporting contest. Now you “score” sex, drugs, a sandwich, or whatever. How about it?

    Always.

  29. I think the good Soulja is going to go the same route as M.C. Hammer and the Spice Girls. In ten years they will be doing an episode of “Where are they now” on him. Which, is kind of sad because he obviously relates his estimate of his self worth with how much money he makes and other peoples’ opinion of him. You’ll notice that he said the one word that best describes him is successful, and not happy or content. A lot of people find it very difficult to get one without sacrificing the other.

  30. leonard says: 89

PLAYBOY: In your emphasis on reason, you are in philosophical conflict with contemporary writers, novelists and poets — many of whom are self-admitted mystics, or irrationalists, as they have been called. Why is this so?

RAND: Because art has a philosophical base, and the dominant philosophical trends of today are a form of neomysticism. Art is a projection of the artist’s fundamental view of man and of existence. Since most artists do not develop an independent philosophy of their own, they absorb, consciously or subconsciously, the dominant philosophical influences of their time. Most of today’s literature is a faithful reflection of today’s philosophy — and look at it!

PLAYBOY: But shouldn’t a writer reflect his time?

RAND: No. A writer should be an active intellectual leader of his time, not a passive follower riding any current. A writer should shape the values of his culture, he should project and concretize the value goals of man’s life. This is the essence of the Romantic school of literature, which has all but vanished from today’s scene.

PLAYBOY: Leaving us where, literarily speaking?

RAND: At the dead end of Naturalism. Naturalism holds that a writer must be a passive photographer or reporter who must transcribe uncritically whatever he happens to observe around him. Romanticism holds that a writer must present things, not as they are at any given moment, but, to quote Aristotle, “as they might be and ought to be.” -refer.co,82.1.1.1

    • Good post. That’s my favorite author. I believe she was from St.Petersburg. When I first read her books, I was surprised with her depth of understanding and dislike of Communism. Then I found out that she was from the USSR and it made a lot of sense. It’s sad that a lot of the things that she mentioned in her books are taking place now and were very prophetic. She even believed in the gold standard, and a lot of people believe that getting away from that is a big reason for the problems we face economically today.

    • andromeda says: 89.2

I don’t buy into this lofty jazz; too much self-ego driven for my tastes. I believe writing is a creative art form; writers work their art with thoughts expressed through words the way painters express through imagery with brushes and colors and sculptors through shapes and forms with tools and physical materials. At the end of all these processes is artistic impression. Here is some artistic writing by Robert Louis Stevenson (A Lodging for the Night) :

      http://www.geocities.com/helenvict0r/Anon_Villon.html

It doesn’t take egomania to create great artistic works or advance philosophy and science, though many highly talented artists, authors, scientists, musicians etc. certainly may be ego freaks. I did not like the related message in Fountainhead, though I do concede that strong ego can be a primal driving force in creative endeavor but like many things it is a double-sided knife that can hurt the wielder (and hapless souls in close proximity) if let run too far amok. The book (Fountainhead) certainly would be reflective of the commentary above though (which is why I take exception to it also).

  36. I’ve had more money than I knew what to do with, and I’ve been so broke I was on foot. I’ve had great friends and relatives, many of whom are gone now. I’ve had some power and authority, and I’ve been scorned when I was down and out. I believe if you have great love in your life, and if you are surrounded by a cadre of true friends, and if you have a deep relationship with your
God, then you can consider yourself successful. The rest will fall into place, or
    it won’t matter.

I would say success is coming from a foreign country and putting down roots. Then starting your own business and watch it grow every day from infancy to adulthood until you have to expand and venture out to a self owned internet business. You worked hard to achieve top status among your peers where you are recognized for your efforts by thousands of adoring fans all over the world and go on to magazine articles, radio spots and now appearances on tv. The sky is the limit for a person like this. I for one hope you make it to where you want to be in this world as you help others learn from your knowledge and teachings on the way upward. May success always be yours to find and to keep. Thank you Marina for letting us be part of your success and to be apart of your life.

  60. For the record, Soulja boy is NOT successful by any means. Success is a sumit. You have to climb the mountain for years in order to truly appreciate the view. Not only that, but it actually requires a skill to climb a mountain side. What soulja boy did was get dropped off at the top via helicopter and, like most rap artists, deemed himself successful based on the fact that he had high income instead of living in the slums. Being a rapper is the equivilant to hitiing pay dirt. It does mean you have money, but by no means does it make you YOURSELF successful. it means you are lucky for a few years. The average football player makes well over 2 million a year, but has an average career of 5 years. These kids with their high dose of income, will fade away with fame. They will deterioriate like Lindsey Lohan or the Olsen Twins, once they’re spitting image and youth dies out. Drugs, eating disorders, and teen parenting are common for them bc they have no true skill. They do these abnormal things to stay in the lime light of their “success” to suppliment for the “skills” that they never really possessed.

Call me old school, but I happen to like being old money because it teaches you how to not only obtain affluence with actual skills, but it also teaches you how to master and maintain money properly so you don’t become a “soulja” BOY, you learn to be a MAN, hold your own, and take care of your loved ones. To me, the definintion of succcess is finding someone to share it with.

  67. The next person that sings the “Happy Birthday” song I’m turning your name to Time Warner for copyright violations! Just kidding…. about turning you in. Happy Birthday song is in fact copyrighted until 2030. Have you ever notice restaurants sing their own version of Happy Birthday song?

    • John says: 51.2

Sometimes Jack your comments just seem out of left field for me, who was singing?

      • No one here was singing. If you had seen the expression on my face and my body language you would have known I was joking. See the written word lacks the full communication of human language. Maybe it would have been better if there was a way to post a video comment? Wouldn’t that be interesting.

The reason for my post is it was brought to my attention that the birthday song is still copyrighted and in fact it still being enforced. I think it’s funny that some company could own the rights for such a old song and still attempt to collect royalties on it, but that’s how the intellectual rights work now days. It’s just too much greed in today’s society.

      • Thanks for the comment on my quotes. I sometimes feel as it falls on deaf ears. Never sure if my thoughts are appreciated to those who find it useful. Normally I’m not that bothered with things like this, but lately with very few boaters on the docks over the winter I feel rather isolated.

Yes, a little known or unknown secret is if you make a video request your chances of it getting pick is much greater, for Marina says it makes her videos a bit more interesting, which I agree. She still does text requests.

Thanks! It’s nice to have internet again. Well I never lost it, it was just being penetrated in a way I could not lock out the hacker without taking away from other users of the service. I used to run multiple internet connections to make sure I had reliable internet connection and the ability to use one connection for uploading and the other for downloading.

    • Wrong Warner.

Actually, because the song used the tune of another song, only the words are copywriteable. So, you could sing it without infringement as,

      Parsley moon dance, poo choo,
      Parsley moon dance, poo choo,
      Parsley moooooon dance, dear {insert name here}
      Parsley moon dance, poo choo.

Of course, everyone will know what is being sung about, so why not?

      • Who does own the publishing rights to “Happy Birthday to You”? They were acquired by a New York accountant named John F. Sengstack when he bought the Clayton F. Summy Company in the 1930s; Sengstack eventually relocated the company to New Jersey and renamed it Birch Tree Ltd. in the 1970s.

Warner Chappell (a Warner Communications division), the largest music publisher in the world, purchased Birch Tree Ltd. in late 1998 for a reported sale price of $25 million; the company then became Summy-Birchard Music, now a part of the giant AOL Time Warner media conglomerate.

        Like I said, Time/Warner.

Successful not in the way I would prefer and not in the eyes of most, I suppose.

  69. Bob says: 49

    How do you define success?
I think the best definitions I ever heard went something like this:-
Success is the continuous, progressive realisation of predetermined steps towards a worthy goal or purpose.
Step 1. You’ve got to have a dream; if you don’t have a dream, how’re you going to have a dream come true?
Step 2. You have to make your dream the most important thing in your life. Everything else should be subservient to your dream and should be supportive of it, so it must be an honourable objective and be shared with your significant others. If there are things in your life which are working against achieving your dream, you’re never going to succeed. Get rid of them.
Step 3. As Marina mentioned in her New Year Resolutions video, you need to break down the process of working towards your objective into smaller, easily achievable steps. The ultimate dream should be overwhelming for you at your present stage of development, so you need to make the next step on the way just challenging enough to stretch you, but not so much that you won’t be able to achieve it.
There are thousands of self-help books available that go into this in depth; go Google!
Here are some quotations by famous people about Success.

  70. It feels so good to be back in class again, I missed you all while my computer was down with a Microsoft problem. And teacher you are looking better than ever.

  71. To me, Success is having control of your life, living it to the fullest, and helping everyone you can along the way!

  72. Just like in Real Estate. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You.

this homework is an invitation to a very social debate..

first i wonder what you- marina – considers a “success” ?

personally i value friendship, love of God, piece, working and living together, ..

if I can contribute just a little to that, i consider that a success…

    • Preach it brother! Wish more people think the way as you do. Unfortunately most people are after materialism to the extreme levels thinking that this is the measure of success. Or acquiring extreme amounts of money as a level of success. Some say they worked very hard for their great fame and fortune which is true, but how do you measure the ones who gave their lives in Iraq or Vietnam? Or how about Paris Hilton wealth vs Firefighter tries to rescue a cat from a tree dies when he fell 40 feet from a tree? (The cat was treated and returned to owners) Is it show or actions that should be the measure of ones success?

I ask the question to everyone is how should success be measured or judge? Should it even be measured?

    • bsomebody says: 43.3

Perhaps the definition of success is achieving the goals that we have set. It is a very simple idea, that I sometimes take for granted. My realtionship with God and my family, striving to be a good neighbor, to continue learning, to show respect to all people (even stupid, or self-serving people – those are the hard ones.) These are my goals. Material excess has never been a goal for me. Someone else in my shoes may consider himself a looser: I work in retail, do some substitute teaching, and I definately do not have alot of monetary wealth. I have what my heart holds most dear, and that is my success.

    Hey Marina,

No, I would not consider myself successful, primarily because I am still in school. I give it another five years or so before I need to start worrying about being successful.

    • Dude!!!! Your still in school! That is success. I have friends that were high school drop outs. BTW school is a life long endeavor. You will never get out. Once you do, in time you will have to return. And if you end up like me you might end up teaching. Look at our dearest teacher Marina. She is still in school as a teacher and a student. But I know what your feeling. I too felt the same way when I was in grade school. I had dreamed to be the worlds greatest computer programmer. I thought Bill Gates was a no body. I even learned how to program on Applesoft Basic programing language he wrote. Now those days are long over. Who knows what you will end up doing that in your mind will be your success story.

  77. neuroway says: 40

To be quite honest: Success doesn’t matter. Money doesn’t matter. When you don’t give a shit, when you don’t give a damn, that’s when it suddenly becomes magical. Yeah, only then things will become magical.

    • skaterguy says: 40.1

depends if you find “succes” and “money” the same thing..

    • The freedom to do what ever the hell you want to do when ever you want do to with no restrictions? Is it magical or should it be the norm?!?! If it’s not the norm, then what is it that suppresses this?

      • Others. As soon as one of your goals comes into direct competition or opposition with someone else’s goal, then the notion of justice comes in. Where neither you or me can be proved right or wrong, so the issue has to be escalated to another level. If I choose to compete, try to push my way and kick you aside unjustly to pursue my own personal set of goals and agenda, then I’m nothing more than a stupid bully, and I’m only running faster towards the Nemesis that will bring me down sooner or later.

        • Yeah your so right. That’s the major problem with society allowing everyone to pursue their own goals. What’s interesting is there’s this game called Second Life. It’s a 3D online world. They experiences the same issues we have in the real world. Even though there is plenty of room to move around and control your own part of the world, conflicts arise. People just need to learn to back off and search for other ways they could pursue their goal in away that doesn’t interfere with others.

      • John says: 40.2.2

The freedom to do what ever the hell you want to do when ever you want do to with no restrictions? Ok so whom is left too do the work. Hmmmmmmm I think the Government should today open a trust fund for each and every American citizen living and those that are being born and deposit a million dollars (drawing interest) in it and when The living reach 55 years of age you can start drawing it out and when the newly born reach 21 they should be able too draw theirs out, Everyone in America deserves to be millionaires.

Speeking of see or use, I saw yesterday that you changed your screen name and was wondering how you did it. I can’t change mine and I wouldn’t, but I would like the P and the D to be a capital and not a lowercase.

      • It’s easy PD. Go to your dashboard and click on your profile. Where your nick name is retype it the way you want it to look. Then go to the bottom of the page and save your results. Go back up to the name area and under that is “Display name publicly as” and click on the down arrow button. You will see where your old name is and the new one you made. Click on the new one and save your work at the bottom of the page again. Your name should come out like PageDoll. You may have to clear your cache before you see the results in a comment .

        • Thanks Cap.

Those exact words entered my head as I was staring at the comment I left you, and before I read your reply.

          • Now I don’t know what I like the best. Photo of Gorby or your friend photo of Page. I still envy your special friendship with Page. I hope you treasure it as if it was your last for in the future all you will have is the memories.

This comes from my old quote I did back in 2001. “Treasure your friendships as if it was your last days for in the future all you will have left is the memories of what once was.” That was not the exact quote I have it written down somewhere. Interesting thing is that caught the attention of a friend that is so moved by it so much, she became a life long friend. This quote I created I myself need to follow. For I am haunted by refusing a car ride to a party with some good friends that ended up wrapped around a telephone pole. This happened near where you live in San Diego. Interesting how our worlds are so close and intertwined and we don’t even know it. Had I accepted the ride you would not be reading this message.
Wow! Even my own thinking amazes me. Someday I hope to meet this person face to face when he is complete.

      • I used my old Moose and Squirrel and changed the name and gravatar on that one.

  81. Dear HotForWords,

That is fascinating to learn that ‘Success’ means to gain for oneself rather than originally to inherit through succession. What is interesting is that I recently learned in the Documentary Sequel to Esoteric Agenda, Kymatica, that the English Language itself, is entirely opposite of Ancient Hebrew; And other similar languages such as Sanskrit and Gaelic. I don’t know if that’s true or not, but I believe it is so.

Here’s the link to Kymatica (What does that word mean  :?: ) to where it says the above http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6gvHvn9itM&feature=related#t=8m56s and into part 3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgggsutPnZc&feature=related

    Your Student,

PS http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgggsutPnZc&feature=related#t=1m36s for where it says that from Hebrew to English is reversed.

Marina, I was watching Jeopardy today. I don’t remember the catagory, but I believe the answer was, “Etymology is the study of this – and what you should respond with” or something like that.

All I could remember thinking was, “Why didn’t they have Marina introduce that?”

Anyway, you have achieved great success, Marina, and we look forward to seeing and hearing more from you tomorrow. Losers for

My minuscule understanding: Soulja Boy released self-made music videos through YouTube, and became famous for his Crank That dance. His recent Kiss Me Thru The Phone has some interesting lyrics (but there are superior techniques than those illustrated in this video — perhaps one can excuse the remiss in creativity by referring to his youth).

All this in just 2 years — starting from age of 16 to current 18.

    • Capatialism is a failed plan without it’s checks and balances.

      • hs4mm says: 27.2.1

It is government that needs checks and balances, capitalism needs to be laissez-faire. Whenever capitalism was tried, it always had government controls; and the controls led to disasters — but capitalism always got the blame and people introduced more controls — talk about pouring oil on fire! Whatever part of capitalism was free resulted in unprecedented success, but the cause — laissez-faire — was never identified and upheld.

        • I completely disagree with your opinion that government needs the check and balances and not capitalists.
It’s a known fact that big business indirectly controls the government. Businesses get laws made that affect other businesses and not their own works. It’s a war going on you might say. I find it ironic that the same laws that business complain about are the laws that are drawn up by their competitors in business. The government is caught up in the middle. Don’t get me wrong that I’m defending the Feds. Far from it.

I am not able to list my sources (I signed several non-disclosure agreements) other than I have been next to the front line with a company that was in litigation of such a practices that I mentioned.

          • Captain, your answer actually proves my case — here’s how: You say: “Businesses get laws made that affect other businesses …”. My point is that the government should not be making any laws that affect commerce and trade — laissez-faire. If government left the marketplace alone, no business would be able to get any law made to restrict anybody else — there would be no such laws.

        • Yes I see your point. If the companies were not able to get new laws passed it would solve one problem but creates other problems as well. We would have a lawless capitalist running around not able to get anything done for no one would invest without some sort of protection. Do I need to explain further what the problems would be if there were no laws protecting businesses?
