  1. I’d love to Elope to Vegas to play poker and marry you; If it don’t work out I’m sure you can afford the divorce.

  2. pandion says: 110

I am smart enough to know that if I ever do get married that my part in the decision making ends the moment she says, “yes.”
Running off to Vegas does make a lot of sense to me though.

  3. raven62 says: 109

    I have a word request…

    [frank] or [frankly]

It just makes me wonder who this guy named Frank was, and why is there a word which means ’straightforward’ named after him (assuming this is the case, likely not)?

  7. stifled says: 105

    [identity]
I’ve been thinking about this word a lot lately because it has two words in it, “id” and “entity” and these could kind of be used to describe a person. Maybe it’s just a coincidence that these two words are in the word “identity,” but I thought I’d ask you about it anyway.

    • Got my radar activated…

Considering that Associated Press is hogging the Popular pages, that news item should hit YT Popular page#1

Interestingly, AP has not been in the #1 spot, but has been in every position from #2 – #100.

      Definition of hogging:
Since Feb 3, I have 573 data snapshots of the YT Popular pages and AP has appeared 1,556 times. How can that be? Multiple videos. AP is averaging about 2.7 videos per data snapshot. Right this minute, there are two AP videos on the Popular pages at #31 and #44

In comparison, the following have appeared:
      iJustine: 33 times
      HotForWords: 66 times
      sxephil: 462 times
      WhatTheBuck: 377 times
      out of 573 data snapshots.

So inside the pink box my words are! Funky!! Funny! Spiffy! Pink above, pink below, pink on the left… All right! I guess I need to get outta here now.

I’m pretty sure this Associated Press Television Segment will be great.

Marina, I’ve heard British actors use the phrase [Bob's your uncle] in movies and have always wondered about its origin. I’ve heard it in the context of elapsed time, such as, “I’ll be there faster than you can say, ‘Bob’s your uncle’”. Where, when, how and who originated it?
    Thanks a bunch, Sssspike

    .

Don’t know if this will help or hurt, but something to consider:

    1) Create a page http://www.hotforwords.com/todays_word (or todays_lesson etc.) that always loads the latest lesson. Then have other sites such as FoxNews/O’Reilly, sirius, the foreign magazines that have written up on Marina, Pepsi(?) etc. link to that particular page.

    2) Sony has their own web-site to showcase people’s videos: http://www.crackle.com/tos and they sponsor Penn (Jillette of Penn & Teller) on crackle and also on http://www.youtube.com/pennsays .

So what are the pros and cons of having HFW on crackle also?

    3) In a rather long video, Penn makes one very interesting point about the internet: it is replacing “democracy (rule by the mob)” by “leading individuals”.

Hahaha, the way the video starts… (*bleah*)
Is that supposed to be a reflection of the fact that you drank to much last night? :-)
I hope you found that drive through divorce place you were looking for.
If not, I’d like to wish you a… Stone house!?
I don’t know what is the English correspondent, but in Romania we wish newly weds “Casa de piatra!”, meaning “House of stone!”.
It’s a way of wishing strength and unity between the two.
Does anyone else practice such tradition?
Or do you just congratulate them, and that’s that? :-)

    • Evan Owen says: 72.1

      Hi Chemikal,

That’s “Casa de piedra” in Spanish. Random comment, I was just struck by the similarity.

  42. luckybob69 says: 66

howdy, I think I know but I would like to you explain[Crock-Pot]. thanks.

    • A crock is a baked clay vessel. The word pot is superfluous, but in 1970 it was added to crock create a catchy brand name for electric pots. The name has become so familiar (and thus successful) that it is now used for BBQ grills, rice cookers and electric spankers. OK, not the last one.

  43. Boa-reese! Time to keel moose and skvirrel
(just once, Marina – pleez!)

  44. It just dawned on me that, because comments are now assigned to a page, theoretically one could add lower-level comments in unlimited numbers and they would all have to remain associated with their parent comments and hence the page the latter are on. That means you could have a page with an unlimited number of comments.

It appears that the paging plugin puts 40 top-level comments on each page, with one exception. The latest page may have more than a multiple of 40. For example, one lesson had 137 top-level comments. Perhaps when the count gets high enough, an additional page is added and every comment over 40 on the previously-highest page is reassigned to the added page. I don’t know how that works yet. The point is that, even though 40 per page plus an average number of lower-level comments is the design goal, the number of the latter is not controllable. Thus it is conceivable that an undesireably-large page could occur, thus defeating the goal of paging.

OK, let’s get out there and really pump those babies up!!!!! :!:

  45. Evan Owen says: 63

Marina, as a Russian, are you familiar with the connection between eloping and ladders? In the classic American elopement, the young woman is held captive in her room by her parents until her fiance comes with a ladder to her window to help her escape, whereupon they run off and get married. Hence all the ladder jokes in the comments.

  67. James says: 39

If you are worried about views 1 sure way to boost them is [lingerie] A good title, you and the origin of this strange word would make for maybe another million hit lesson.

    • You know, that’s an interesting idea! Now before ya’ll accuse me of being a horny bastard, which I am, of course, hear me out. Marina, you could appear at the intro in some lingerie without showing more skin than appropriate. Just introduce it all flirty like you do so well to set up the tease. After that, heck, you could do the lesson in a bathrobe, or demonstrate with photos of lingerie models, or mannequins in lingerie. (Of course, if you decided to do the lesson wearing lingerie yourself I’d somehow force myself to view it, I guess.) My point is I concur with James about the view count, and most importantly, I would really like to see the effect a lesson like this might have in regards to the YT Most Popular algorithm situation. Maybe irrelavent; don’t know.

      Homework: No, and no.

      Always.

  68. subtlelight says: 38

I would like to make a request for the word “ostentatious”, please. Thanks you!

  69. I believe the closest thing to a drive-thru divorce is an [annulment]. Maybe, that should be your next word. I believe it can be done for no reason within 48 hours of the marriage. I think Brittney Spears had one of those. It might have been back when she was still claiming to be a virgin. I wonder if she still does that. I don’t know if that had any connection to why the annulment happened. It would make sense if the guy was upset because Justin Timberlake got there first. This was just after she was dumped by him. I wonder if she still claims to have real boobs too. You know how those growth spurts can strike so quickly and unexpectedly.
Annulments are good for the situation you were talking about where alcohol is involved, but I thought Russians could hold their vodka. As they say, “it’s always better to look before you leap” especially where marriage is involved. Why is divorce so expensive? Because it’s worth it.

  70. muggins says: 36

If I wait for YT to contact me, it is less than once per week, with a list of your last half dozen or so vids.

  82. Bob says: 21

Well, I didn’t run away from anything, but I did get married on the other side of the world and didn’t tell anyone until afterwards – does that count?
And it wasn’t a $50 quickie either; there were over 200 guests and the wedding lasted a total of five days and was spread out over three months.
Edit: Just seen Capman’s comment below; I paid for all of it, so I’m determined to get the most value for my money and make it last.

  83. I know it’s tradition, but why does the Brides side of the family have to pay for most of the wedding while the groom only gets by with a minimal amount? I figured it is a carry over from when women had to have dowries, but times have changed. It should be equal share between the two families to get their children married. You know women’s lib and all should have changed that. The bra burning was an excellent idea, but I see they went back to wearing them. So much for that. :???:

We did have some friends that eloped. We did not find out until their “wedding” two years later. At the wedding, they told us that they had actually eloped before, and this was their two-year anniversary. I thought it was kinda funny, but Mrs. Somebody was pretty hurt by the whole thing. Mrs. Somebody and the bride were pretty close, but the missus was not included in the select handful who knew. It was kind of a bummer.

  92. rambo508 says: 11

I would like to request the word, [Obtuse]
    I changed it – Marina

  93. A friend eloped because his parents didn’t think she was the right woman. He married her… elope style… and found out that his parents were right. She strayed away… started polishing other guys’ horns!

  94. seesixcm6 says: 9

Dear Marina, You saved a video you made in Las Vegas! You look so happy in you recent videos! It makes me glad to see and hear you. No my parents didn’t elope. I hope you don’t elope either, because you would look so extremely beautiful in a new, white wedding dress! Even I would pay a bit more than $50 for a quickie wedding in Las Vegas with you!
    Seesixcm6!

  95. Homework: No. Marriage is grand. Divorce? Around a hundred grand…
The line in the Twelve Days of Christmas makes sense, now.
    “Eleven lords aleaping….”
Placing a ladder at the window and stealing away to get married is an old [cliche] here in the states.

  96. Dezdkado says: 7

    I’m loving the bloopers!

I have friends who eloped… in order to save money. My parents eloped (sort-of) because my father was shipping out to a new duty station. My grandparents were all happy about it, and wished them well, so it really wasn’t “running away.”

Hmm… drink, drank, drunk… Marina, you’re not getting too tipsy are you? Don’t get too crazy and get married in one of those chapels.

Hey, that’s a good word to do… [Chapel]

I have heard that “cheese,” or rather “fromage” comes from the Roman description of the cheese-packing process. They called cheese wheels “casseus formatus” (or something similar), meaning formed in a case (or mold). Any truth to this?

    • leonard says: 7.1

      I 2nd that request..Cheese Roll 2008 – Gloucester, England…wisconsin has better cheddar…

    • Evan Owen says: 7.2

      Word request: [cheese]

If “casseus” is the Latin, then Spanish “queso” and Welsh “caws” are obvious cognates. “Cheese” could derive from it also, in the same way that “chief” came from “capita.”

The “mold” is of course essential to making blue cheese.

      • Dezdkado says: 7.2.1

I looked up one source that says fromage comes from the Latin “caseus formaticus”… caseus, meaning cheese, and formaticus meaning formed or molded. This would make some sense as the Romans made great wheels of cheese. From this source it is described that the French modified formaticus (or formaticum) into fromage. The link between caseus and queso is definite, according to the Online Etymology Dictionary. As for the French blue cheese connection, we have another problem… is it pronounced “Roquefort” or “Roque-forte”?

Marina, how about turning off gravatars for a day or so to see if that would speed things up? Even though each gravatar is small, it could be that 200 or so requests to the gravatar-icon-server is what is slowing page loads on HFW.

Am I grammatically correct in my “I shouldn’t have drank that much…”? Now I’m thinking it should be ” I shouldn’t have drunk that much!”. Where is Grammar Girl when I need her?

  99. Hey, Marina, check out the Popular Forum.
I posted a graph of your “Several” video which has been hogging the Popular board. Yipeeee!!!!

    Edit:
I see the video is now gone, but it had a great run.
    It will be baaaack.

Pedantic, so did the text based link to YouTube that Marina provided help? Did you know that originally that text based linked added to direct views, and later was changed to add to referred views? If that link helped, which form of the link helped?

      • Hi hs4mm,
As far as I can tell, the text based link and the destination link when double-clicking the video are identical. In either case, YT will recognize the click as an “&eurl=….”, or externally accessed link.

As I pointed out on the forum (my most recent posting), the clicks for the “Several” is very low (1%), yet the video was on the Popular board for 8+ hours. In, fact, two or three other HFW videos should have been on the board, but they are not, nor have they been, which means at this point in time (my limited knowledge so far), YT is capricious in placing videos on the Popular board.

For almost 24 hours, the text based link did not have the “&eurl” part — see Several/Thread 64* including Marina’s comment at 64.2.

          • Hi hs4mm,
By not having the “&eurl” attached, YT would not know the referrer and give credit as a “click” to that referrer.
(Of course they would know the referrer via the HTTP server logs which is different.)

Visit the “Several” video on YT, then click the “Statistics & Data” button, then look at the clicks. Very low at 1%, compared to the “Smoking pot with Michael Phelps?” which is 17% and scriptgirls video which as 10%.

My conclusion is that one cannot isolate just one single variable and use that as the golden metric. There are lots of ratios at play which YT uses.

5th page is not a good run for me. I need to appear on the #1 and #2 pages. I am still very upset by all this.

    • As predicted, the “Several” video is
back on the Popular page 5, #82.
It may be up there for another 1-3 hours, or possible more.
