Hey Marina!!! Your site is the best!!!!!!!!! I come from Poland and i’m a student of Enlish Philology:))))Sexy philologists rocksss:)
But I’ve got a great idea or maybe not…. Your site concerns word origins but maybe it would be a good idea to make a new branch of your studies….
Something about the origins of words combination!! such as collocations or fixed phrases
e.g I’ve heard that to kick a bucket originated from the ritual (ha ha ha) of killing pigs, during which they kick some bucket or something….

    if this idea sucks

My word request is [sophisiticated]:) I just like this word

  6. Hi Marina,

Do you know the true origins of the word [quark]?

  7. xhiroyukix says: 159

I would like to request [donut], not as the food item but as the insult. Did it originate from JFK in Germany saying “Ich bin ein Berliner”?

OK, this is odd. My new cam wont work properly with vegas, so what I have to do now, is turn them into mp4 render them as wmv in vegas then edit in movie maker… the total reverse of what i did before (edit in move maker render in vegas) LOL

I did a test and it just happened to be a clip of me sayin “fucking hell” with a tune… now it repeated 3 times and sounds funny…. I will make it public until tomorow afternoon.

maybe you know of some other trees having interesting roots?
    thanks for your lessons

Mountainboy32, I have not made climbing axes before but I understand the basic princples, the thing that is design and time. You have obviously thought about this and have a design in mind, and it might be possible for me to forge what you are asking for. I would suggest that you locate a smith closer to home however face to face helps an artist get a feel of who you are and that goes into the are. You might want to also look for bladesmiths as well. Good luck on your search. A friend of the devil.

You must be extremely busy, with studying and everything else going on, but if you ever get time, where did the term [petered out], meaning dwindled originate. Maybe some guy named Peter was a dwindler.Have a great day.

  24. I have a challenge for you, investigate the recent term [exergaming]… but with out reference to any Nintendo product! Is it a portmanteau morph or is the general use somewhat wider? I’d love to hear what you think!

  25. big ed says: 140

The Dark Knight (Batman), hands down. Love you, Lady Marina!

  26. I would like to request [Stoked]. To be stoked about something is to be excited and or amped about it. Close to the word Stoke like Stoke a fire? To be fired up about something? If so, then where did the word Stoke come from in the sense of stoking a fire?

    cheers

thanks for fielding my 3 requests, ill back down now

  27. I would like to request [Flashmob]. A flashmob is something like this:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flash_mob

Wikipedia Definition of A flash mob (or flashmob[1]) is a large group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual action for a brief time, then quickly disperse. The term flash mob is generally applied only to gatherings organized via social media or viral emails.

heres some youtube examples of good flashmobs:

  29. eguy208 says: 134

I would like to request the word [Terrific]. The connotation for this word is negative, but people use it like it’s positive. For instance, Horror and Terror are two negative words. Horrible and Terrible are still negative, and Terrorism and Horrendous are both still negative…..but Horrific is negative and [Terrific] is positive. At what point did people start using [Terrific] as a positive meaning?

Recently, I began blacksmithing as a hobby and I have come across various equivalent names such as: Celtic: GOUGH
    Welsh: GOF
French: FEVRE (usually ‘le Fevre’ – the Smith).
    Polish: KOWALSKI
    Russian: KUZNETSOV
    Finnish: SEPPANEN
    Lithuanian: KALVAITIS
What I would like to know is the origins of the English word [smith], can you please help me.

      • “Surely by now there can be few here who still believe the purpose of government is to protect us from the destructive activities of corporations. At last most of us must understand that the opposite is true: that the primary purpose of government is to protect those who run the economy from the outrage of injured citizens.”"
“Those in power have made it so we have to pay simply to exist on the planet. We have to pay for a place to sleep, and we have to pay for food. If we don’t, people with guns come and force us to pay. That’s violent.”
To reverse the effects of civilization would destroy the dreams of a lot of people. There’s no way around it. We can talk all we want about sustainability, but there’s a sense in which it doesn’t matter that these people’s dreams are based on, embedded in, intertwined with, and formed by an inherently destructive economic and social system. Their dreams are still their dreams. What right do I — or does anyone else — have to destroy them.

At the same time, what right do they have to destroy the earth?”

Congratulations Marina, I have a request about a word which is very “international”. The word is [CAPTAIN]. Thank you, I wait inpatiently.

  47. Hi Marina,
Do you know where the word “Technology” originated from?
    Thanks

    • memos994 says: 113.1

To lonewolf1980 from memos994, word [TECHNOLOGY] originates from greek word TECHNOLOGIA which means TECHNOLOGY!!!!!! The origin comes from two greek words, TECHNI (=art, skilfulness) and LOGOS (=speach, word). Those two words together mean the abbility to transform theoretical sciences to real products, for example to create a car or a computer. Yours, Gerasimos

Looks like YouTube has changed the definition of MostViewed:

    1) Two videos with under 10,000 views are on Page 2

    2) Two videos with under 5000 views are on Page 3

    3) This lesson was on Page 5, but I cannot spot it anywhere now.

    • I say will all chip in and buy Youtube we all become like share holders and Marina is the boss. What do you think?

    •
      Hello hs4mm,
It looks like you were on another country YT site, such as UK, IE, DE, etc. What you said is not true for the US YT Most Viewed pages. That’s why you also noticed the missing HFW video.

Be careful of YT cookies as they will remember your last country visited. The way to know that you are on the US page is when the country in the upper left near the YT logo says “Worldwide”. Last year it said “Global”. There is a bunch of threads on this HFW site around June, July 2008 where some of us talked about getting on the correct YT page.

What you said above is correct for the UK site as an example.
Here is how you can get un-intended data.

In your browser Adr bar, enter “uk.youtube.com”.
Notice that the URL goes back to the US Adr, but now look at the country next to the logo, it should say UK. Now, visit the Most Viewed, and you’ll see low views as you said.

Now, clear your cookies, refresh your browser and the country next to the YT logo will say “Worldwide”. Now visit the Most Viewed. Different data, right?

Here are two screen shot comparisons of US and UK.
Notice the different videos. A UK video at the bottom of page 1 was 9K views (not in screen shot).

      • hs4mm says: 111.2.1

Thanks. I was on UK – but I have no idea what I might have done that would have gotten me to UK! Deleted cookies and restarted browser, and am back to worldwide

If I did something that made UK default, there must be something else equally simple that can be done that would make Worldwide the default! Perhaps, browsing “us.youtube.com”?

Deleting cookies is a pain because sites that used to remember me will be reset.

        • You click the country word in the upper left which says Worldwide or the other country you are in and select Worldwide.

          • You tube has a mind of its own.

          • Hi teach…
I was just wondering, do you correct homeworks? :-)
I know that teachers always hate that part. But it’s essential.
I’d be happy to get marked, or receive a grade from you, or any of the TAs. Do you think that that would bring more traffic to the website? Or would it just bring unwanted kind of traffic?

In that order of ideas, maybe we could have a comment grating system, that would track the user’s comments, and display a total average of his comment’s grades.
Of course, this is not the most useful thing, I just thought it would be fun, and maybe it would motivate some members to keep a clean act. (youtube has something similar… but not quite)

          • Marina: In regards to Chemikal comment…”…I’d be happy to get marked, or receive a grade from you, or any of the TAs….”: I think those actions, grading by other than you; would be not good. Grading in it self, has dividing ramifications.&*****Dividends become diversions and more divisions, dislocating the disenchantment; and more discriminating.    but contests of being good, is good

        • hs4mm, as Marina pointed out, you click on the country in the upper left and a large menu of items will be displayed.

I mentioned cookies to indicate what the YT mechanism is, which in this case is a preference stored in cookies.

The way that your country got switched is probably due to clicking on a video that someone shared. For example, there are some videos that are only stored in Ireland or UK, etc, “ie.youtube.com”. I forget which video it was, but I would watch this one music video and it would always throw my country into Ireland. Then, I’d forget to look and I’d get the stats wrong.

        • It’s http://www.youtube.com/?gl=US&hl=en
“gl=US” selects “worldwide” as country preference and “hl=en” selects “English (US)” as language preference.

  52. Hello hot for words folks its Mountainboy and I cleaned up my act. Well it won’t be totally clean, but it will be [plush], comprehensible and down right respectful to the host. I real love to have seen the Oscars the the ABC analog when out the bastards are pushing me for the satellite TV. I rather be on the computer anyways. Maybe I can take a hot Hollywood babe next year. There I go pipe dreaming again you folks with half to bear with me. I have billionair taste and a budget well not good.

    • I forgot to ask you – what city are you from in Italy?
My friend Franco just went back to Mondolo last Friday after spending six weeks learning english at a school here in Florida. Ciao, for now

      • Well all I know is I was born in Torino my mother is Italian and father was from Russia. I was adopted from an orphanage in Naples when I was 3 years old. I was brought her by a European family which I real don’t even speak to anymore. I toured with dead tour and that was my family. Well it was always a rumor with family like my good friend Miracle. I was Jerry long lost son. I love to visit Italy again I climbed Mt. Bianco in 98. I just don’t have the funds. I have been under a government conspiracy by the US government it a scandal. I am not trying be arrogant, but I am a God. I was friends with Brandon Lee I met him Foshan China in 94. He was had and the government did me wrong with the kind of folks in Hollywood I probably be hanging with right now. If I was weight training like I use two and mountain climbing and yoked out and not scared for my life because of the us scandal on me. I be in Hollywood and there is no pipe dream about that. I hope you got a piece of Mountainboy a little better now. See Ya Bro

        • Wow, we may have met once, fer real. I was back stage at a Dead show back in late ‘88 or early ‘89. Buddy of mine had a dad who was a roady (last name was Grillo.) Funny, though, I do not remember seeing you  , if you know what I mean.

          • What state was the show?(Nassau Coliseum?) Brent was a live then you real had to fire up my memory didn’t you.

          • So Cal somewhere. Maybe Long Beach Coliseum? Like I said, some of the details are a little (purple) hazy. The funny part is, I smoke only tobacco, but I did breathe the air backstage. Needless to say, I ended up taking an unexpected (though not unwelcome) trip that night.

No… I’m thinking. It was outdoors, at an amphitheater somewhere, the Greek maybe?

          • I definitely seen all west coast tour for the late 80’s are you thinking about Uncle Ulysses maybe he took you on a trip.

    • Interesting a mountain man with plush tastes. Sounds like oil and water trying to mix as they were the same. I myself would like to form trees into a tall ship. The trees add a life spirit that guides the ship and crew to it’s journey to other lands. The tall ship Lady Washington and I are bonded in a special way. She has always looked out for me and I have looked out for her. Much of my blood has been absorbed into her decks. Much of my skin has been fused into her transom forever preserved until time stops. Part of her soul is in me as part of me is in her. I have done my best to take care of her. I keep her looking ship shape by cleaning her up and I give her a make over with fresh paint when she is feeling a bit weathered down. I leave her in capable hands that will continue to take care of her forever.
I don’t feel the same way about plastic boats. It’s not just the same.

      • Reminds me of some books I read awhile back. I will try to look them up, you may be interested. I don’t know if you read fantsy novels, but the story line is pretty unique. The ships are living; the figurehead actually speaks. Anyway, they have the whole bad guys trying to steal on ship, killing another ship, the good guys trying to save the ships, the young maiden whose pure heart must save the day… the whole nine yards. Good series.

        • I don’t have time to read for I read all day long. The only books I read right now is reference material. Someday when I’m cruising around the world I hope to read some enjoyable books. Your book sounds interesting. I think I might have heard of them before.

      • [Mountainclimbing] is a rich mans game have you ever seen the price of Patagonia clothing. The Duke of Abruzi was a climber he even has a Mountain ridged named after him on God Austin(K2).

        • Yeah Patagonia is a bit pricey but it also serves an important function that department store clothing can’t do. I’m a person that hold function more than looks. That said I think one can also put good design into functional. Like the climbing gear we use on the Lady Washington has to be comfortable for we sit in our rigs for hours doing repairs. We also try to find gear that is plain looking for it blends well with our period proper funny clothes we use on the tall ships.

  53. This is a bit off subject, but thought some of you might find it a bit interesting. Russian Navy Sinks Commercial Shiphttp://bit.ly/Am3On
When someone says stop you stop. I think the Russian Navy had every right to do what they did. They gave them every chance to turn or stop. The captain could have just sat outside the borders and waited for permission to enter.

What do you think? Why would the captain of the transport ship cross the border and risk the lives of the crew and sinking of the ship and cargo?

    • hs4mm says: 107.1

Agree that, as a general principal, a country has the right to defend its waters against unlawful entry.

Regarding “The captain could have just sat outside the borders and waited for permission to enter.” It is the other way around — the ship was at Nakhodka (which is in Russia) legally and was trying to go out. The Russian who ordered the rice (the ship’s cargo) refused the rice and wanted his money back – so the ship was not being allowed to go out of Russia.

As a hypothetical aside, if the US had defended itself properly against an unlawful entry, lots of people (both inside and outside US) would be screaming against the US. Unfortunately, after WW II, the US has been acting as a wuss when it comes to defending itself.

      –Hs4Mm

      • Oh my mistake. Yeah the other way around.

Everyone wants to throw mud at the biggest of anything. If the US was #2 or #3 there wouldn’t be much issue.

      • Patriotism, when it wants to make itself felt in the domain of learning, is a dirty fellow who should be thrown out of doors.
        – Arthur Schopenhauer (1788 – 1860)

        • Rhetoric for rhetoric’s sake is no substitute for wisdom or reason.
          - MeLikaDoTheChaCha (1955 – )

          • It is not necessary for Eagles to be Crows. We are poor but we are free. Nobody controls our footsteps. If we must die, we die defending our rights.
            – Sitting Bull (1831 – 1890)

          • (big sigh of exasperation) You don’t get it, yet
Pretty words for meaningless rhetoric.
Being obstinant is also no substitute for wisdom or reason.

          • Sitting Bulls words are far from meaningless, however they do not apply in this context. Sitting Bull did not rebel against all authority, nor all laws; but against improper authority and anjust laws. Dr. King, Gandhi, even Thoreau recognized the difference between just and unjust authority. They also understood the concept of choosing the correct battles (well, maybe not Thoreau  ). But the successful rebels, even the nonviolent ones, understood the idea of submission to just laws. Individual rights must be balanced by protection for the common good. Too much individualism leads to thug rule; too much common good leads to suppression of the freedom that we struggle to maintain. Balance, harmony, one with the universe, yin-yang, whatever you call it. Choose your battles.

          • Bullocks!

Exasperation? Let it go! Write it down!! Wisdom or reason has its limits Chacha. You can’t reason out with everybody. What’s left then? A lion has no other border than his own piss. Cross it, and you’re on your own.

    • I am half Russian and protection is imperative to the safety of a country. Russia rules they should have never parted with Alaska…………….. I will say if the USA blows shit up we never hear about it. When another country does something where always right there to be involved look at Iraq its a nightmare.
Caption you never answered my question. What do you think about Azimut Yachts? The other half of me is Italian I personally love them..

    • neuroway says: 107.3

The only thing I see and the only thing which is quite sure is that an armed warship attacked a defenseless merchant ship, sinking it and killing 8 innocent civilian crew members. I personally don’t give a damn about the “official” versions of the story, either the russian or the chinese one.

      • Use of the word “innocent” is incorrect and unsupported by the facts. You are assuming this and ignoring the truth. Why would innocent people flee? Why didn’t they obey lawful orders? They were ordered to stay in port, and fled. They were pursued and ignored lawful orders to halt – for 18 hours! …don’t you get it????
In case you are ever stopped by police, some good advice would be to cooperate with their investigation, and do not make any aggressive movements which could get you shot dead, Hm’kay?

        • Obey? Serve? Bow? Oh yeah. Sure sure. What else? Lick the boots of the sergeant of service? Listen up, Chacha. Not everybody was trained in a bootcamp.

        • If we choose freedom, we also choose to have agents to protect that freedom. Another alternative is to allow absolute freedom, which means that the strongest will be in control. True anarchy is impossible, because in the absence of authority, someone will fill that void. I can choose to either submit to the established authority, submit to the strongest thug, or stand on my own. As much as I wish that rules were not needed, in the real world they are a necessity. We have to choose our battles.
I know, NW, it may seem odd that I am agreeing with Chacha and CJ on this one. I wish you were right, but I fear that they have an accurate account of the way things work. We do need them on that wall, for now at least.

          • I beg your pardon?

You are saying the strongest is not in control? You are saying our world is controlled by the weakest perhaps?

            Ahoy! Prove it!

          • @ bsomebody – with freedom comes duty and responsibility.
The point you illustrate about anarchy is well made.
People who run red lights (anarchists) may get away with it once in awhile, but those who make that a standard practise either end up creaming those who have the right of way, or get creamed themselves.
While you say you agree with CJ and I, really, you are seeing the same things as we do for what they are.
@ neuroway – 7th grade civics is not bootcamp, nor is Judge Judy, nor is the Cops TV show.
Obey – yes dammit, obey the rules – absolutely.
Serve – yes, when you obligate yourself to serve, it is your responsibility.
Bow – as in yield to the rights of others? yes, yield.
I hope you understand the simple example illustrated by someone who cuts in front of a line of people. The folks waiting for their turn have rights, the person cutting the line has none.
“You are saying our world is controlled by the weakest perhaps? …Prove it”
I am not saying that at all. That’s not even logical or reasonable, or sensible.
These are your words, not mine – and ypur arguement along these lines is pathetic.
Your suggesting I said such a thing is equally pathetic, and lame. And suggesting I prove an arguement, made by you, which you have already shown to be ignorant, is ridiculous.
Perhaps you could examine what I said, again, and use a braincell or two to understand the words I use at face value instead of trying to read your bias into it. You’ll sound more intelligent doing that.

          • I am saying that the weak do have a say in matters, bacause those men and women on that wall, in those ships, protect my right to participate. The “weak,” perhaps we should say the “other-than-the-rich-white-elite-male” are a part of the process. Without those men and women, those with either the biggest guns, or the most money to hire those guns, would be in control. I must sacrifice a small part of my individual freedom in order to protect that freedom. It is a fine line, constantly changing. Perhaps we went too far with the Patriot Act, perhaps we went too far with the Watts riots. It is a tug-of-war that has been at the forefront of this country since (at least) Thomas Jefferson squared off against Alexander Hamilton. No one has it exactly right, but through a process of checks and balances, we are able to stay close. Yes, we do stray off course, but we are able to correct ourselves.

You and I pull on one end of the rope, CJ and Chacha pull on the other. Either one of us would fail independently. It is the actual struggle that allows us to prevail.

So, yes. The weak are in control. You and I do have our hands on that rope. CJ and Chacha have their hands on that rope. Those men and women stand on that wall (and kill and die on that wall) while we have our tug of war.

ps My apologies to CJ and Chacha if I misrepresented you, but it fit the metaphor. NW and I cannot be on the rope by ourselves, now can we?

          • @Chachacha

Lame, pathetic arguement? Ignorant and ridiculous? Read my bias? Not even logical or reasonable? Obey, serve and bow?

Okey dokey. I’ll put this valuable wording into my thinking queue. But right now all of my few braincells got quite busy on something else. Something very catchy has just got my attention. And in some sudden great, magnificent spirit of energetical conservation, I decided that I don’t want to consume them for nothing, burn their tires out on some useless dragstrip contests.

For now I’ll let your valuable opinion mijotate a bit into my thick thinking casserole. I’ll come back to you about this!

            ¡Hasta luego Chachacha!

          • @bsomebody,

Say for yourself, mate! I can perfectly be on the rope by myself!

          • We cannot swing up on a rope that is attached only to our own belt.
            William Ernest Hocking (1873 – 1966)

or one can hang himself with that rope.
The thing is, we are not letting go of the rope. I know I am going to hang on and keep tuggin’ away. I hope you stick with the rope, too. I may not always agree with you, but I still need you to help me pull.
Peace my friend, I cannot pull without you, and I am convinced that you will loose without the help from all of us.

      • Sometimes they like to test out the equipment and they just don’t care the military gets trigger happy.

      • So if this was a car chase on the freeway and the officers tag the speeding car, causing it to spin out and extinguish the driver. You call the occupant of the vehicle evading the police innocent?

        • Nay capt’n. In your exemple, the driver of the car is not innocent. Suppose there’s a baby in the car. The baby is innocent though, whatever happens. The passengers are innocent. And if the officer draws his gun and shoots at the car, then he becomes the murderer.

          • There is no baby in the Captain’s example – nope, not there.
The officer did not draw his weapon and fire in the Captain’s example – nope, not there.
If there is a baby in the car, the driver is responsible for the life or death of the baby, in both examples – not the officer doing his duty to protect and serve the public. The driver is the murderer.
The officer protected the woman and child 50 feet down the road, crossing the street, who the driver would have also murdered had the officer failed to do his duty.
Neuroway – your arguments and logic defy intelligence and embarrass you and your parentage. Either learn to reason better, or shut up and don’t prove you are in idiot, any more.
(Since I NEVER tell anyone to shut up, EVER; well… I guess what that means is – I believe you will continue to show us what a fool you are).

          • ok Chachacha!

I must bow before the extent of your wisdom, reasoning power and knowledge. I have no more arguments. Yes, I suddenly realize what a fool I am. Oh! Painful doom and gloom! Why, oh Muse, why am I such a thick skulled barbaric and savage moron?

        • The anwer to your question to Neuroway is – yes.
Neuroway does not know what the meaning is for the word innocent. In his mode of thinking, criminals are all innocent. At least this is what he is arguing…
I am done with this one, since Neuroway isn’t going to shut up first, I will.

    • Read the report. Watched the video. What a mess…
The chase went on for 18 hours! Even OJ Simpson was smart enough to stop. Those in command of the New Star are the at fault and Russia acted reasonably. There was nothing in the report to suggest the New Star communicated with anyone else. The lesson is that when shots fired across the bow are ignored, dire consequences follow. There is no excuse for New Star’s company that can change what happened. My guess is that other [heads will roll] as more information is revealed.

      • Sure thing Judge. Heads will roll. There’s a bill to pay. 8 innocents have been murdered in cold blood. They probably had families back home. Wives, kids, friends, parents, etc…

Now suppose an angry and menacing mob is at your doors, asking for the head of the murderer on a silver plate. Who do you give away? The gunman who sank the ship? The captain of the merchant ship who didn’t stop? The captain of the warship who gave the fire order to the gunman? The russian & chinese big shots who were most likely talking to the captains when this happened, giving them orders over the phone? Or do you give them some poor weirdo, some scapegoat that had nothing to do with the story? All of them? Who pays the bill?

        • As I said – what a mess…
Asking rhetorical questions won’t change what happened.
          Speculation isn’t helping anything, either.
One cannot assume there was any communication as you have suggested, at this point.
Over a course of 18 hours, a decision was finally made to sink the vessel – that was reasonable.
People died, families will mourn and more heads will roll because of it.
It is what it is, and clearly the fault rests with the New Star.
Live by the rules, or die by the rules.
They chose to risk death, and lost. Bad move…

        • @ NW, Now your exaggerating. The 8 crew are not innocent. They were all participants on the escape. If they did not want to participate they could have done on gumby suits and jumped over board. Easy feat to do for I have done it myself. The crew knew exactly what they were doing. One thing your not familiar with is many ships crewed do not have families at home or if they do they, the crew, do not care about leaving them behind. So your making assumptions about their concerns of their families if they even have them.

All that said I know there is no way to convince you other wise for you have already judge them and made up your mind without examining the facts that I’m sure you have not seen. That’s your final opinion of the incident then I’m fine with that. You have already made your decision on the case and you can not change it. So be it.

          • Really? They should have mustered their courage, face their captain and jumped into the freezy water then? Wow. I don’t buy that capt’n. Even for a dollar. Even for a penny I don’t buy it. Go sell it to someone else.

Not all US citizens approved the war in Iraq. If we follow your reasoning, the ones that didn’t approve it and that didn’t emigrate to other countries are not innocent of the bombing of civilians in Bagdhad?

Geez. Give me coffee someone. I need an expresso shot, subito presto.

          • Neuroway is going to cling to his arguements and fly in the face of logic, regardless of of our attempts to reason with him. If at first, you don’t succeed -try try again. Then if you don’t succeed, give up! There is no point in being a damn fool yourself
I wonder, is Neuroway a girl, perchance?

          • @ Neuroway – shame on you! The stupidity of your arguments is an insult to those who should have taught you better. You had to bring Iraq into this? And cycle back to using the word innocent incorrectly, again?? There isn’t enough coffee in the world to save you from yourself.
Not all people agreed in the Revolutionary War of 1776. In fact less than 40% agreed. That means 60% sided with the tyranny of King George.
I guess the USA should not exist at all, huh? But it does, so there.

          • BTW, Chachacha, I appreciate all your imputs, but you didn’t answer my question. Suppose there’s an angry mob out there, asking for the head of the culprit. Who do you give them as a scapegoat so they can vent their frustration?

      • @ ChaCha, Oh I should have read your example of the OJ Simpson car chase. I just duplicated your efforts. Well said.

I’m surprised the chase took 18 hours. In that amount of time traveling maybe 22 knots they would have traveled about 400 nautical miles. That is some distance out of the borders. It’s very clear there intentions were to try to escape the authorities.

    • My ship was off the coast of Vladivostak in the late ’80s. Part of what we did was (try to) enforce the 3-mile international boundary instead of the Soviet’s claim to 12-mile boundary. Their carrier would lock on and tell us to back off, so we backed off – until the next day when we did it all over again. I had some awesome pics of their Heinz helos coming at us, but I have misplaced them over the years  . Things would get a little dicey at times. It was my understanding that the Soviets would do the same thing off of San Diego, but I never saw it myself.
I do remember when our Navy shot down an Iranian (commercial?) airliner during the first Gulf War when the plane approached on of our battlegroups. We did get some grief over that, but I think most people understood that it was a no-fly zone, and the US Navy had properly warned the approaching aircraft. War is ugly, and people will die. Same thing happens when approaching international boundaries, especially when a hostile threat is perceived.

    • Chemikal says: 107.6

In general, people that have guns tend to use them once in a while, just because they can.(out of impulse, I think) Now, about what happened…

I think that some friendly force could have been implemented even on water. I thought the Navy had precision weapons, couldn’t they have disabled the rudder, or maybe the engine propellers? And then tug it to shore, for arrests?
I don’t know, sinking a ship sounds stupid to me.
      - Captain, their not stopping.
      - AYE… FIRE!

Police escort isn’t an option either, because today everyone is a terrorist. Or is believed to be. What if those people were suffering major technical difficulties, would they have to die for it? Instead of receiving help.
Ships can be boarded can’t they?
All I know is that I wouldn’t have sunk that ship, not even as a last resort. An intelligent captain or crew will always find a solution. Then again, I wouldn’t even place the blame on them… I’d blame the protocol! (or absence of it)

Also, if any threat would have been confirmed, I’d be all for opening fire. But only in this situation.
Since when did noncompliance become enough to get the death sentence?

If I can add one more personal opinion, I think that Russia sometimes marches to a different drum, than we do. (not saying it’s a bad thing, not saying it’s good)

Could you help us out and explain where the word [HOCKEY] came from? This came up at the last game and I would love to hear you explain it.

Oh dear, The first fiveandahalfguys episode isnt going too well

    • Marina says: 98.1

Don’t you think that misscupcake will feel a bit bad that you are ripping her off? Even though you say you are not?

    • I think the dude better take his ritalin…

    • A scenario for your consideration:
You have spent much time preparing a creative presentation.
Almost immediately, another person does a knock-off of your work, even absconding the title, plagarizing your work in an unethical manner – a shameless self-promoter putting their name to your idea.
What do you say to that person?
I suggest you watch the movie Flash of Genius. It will give you the incite you do not possess. It is the story of how the Ford motor company acted without conscience and infringed on an inventor’s patented idea. I hope you can learn from it.

      • James says: 98.3.1

I wouldn’t say it was a knock off at all! The name is very similar yes, but what about fiveawesomeguys/gays :?: I thought about it, and personally, if someone had a channel with a name similar to mine, I wouldn’t mind. I don’t think misscupcake is mad about it… She added me as a friend and is still talking to me. I had wanted to do some things about split personalities before fiveandahalfgirls was even set up! But I didn’t think about having a different channel for it. fiveandahalfgirls is 5 different people played by 1 person. Fiveandahalfguys is 5 different types of me played by me. There are not any seperate people in it, because they are all me. Also, I decided yesterday, everything in the video will be based on something true. The bus driver video actually happened, the driver actually did tear up my ticket. Every video will have something in it that happened in that day. I have no talent, I cant stick at anything except to act out my own life in different ways! Of course, now people will say smpfilms does that, and all I can say is…. he does…. so what! Let’s face it. I have been on youtube for 2 years now, infact I have been on YT longer than Marina has, if my videos were worth anything do you think that I would still be stuck where I am now. I don’t have talent, there is nothing I know about in one particular field which rules out guru. Whatthebuck, well he pretty much can destroy anyones hopes at a reporter channel on youtube. Directors, I am not a director…. Comedian, I make people laugh, There is no niche for laughter. So sometimes the only way to make it is to take the piss out of yourself. Some people don’t have the x factor. I am one of them. I am trying stuff out. But can you see how I get really stressed out sometimes :?:  I’m putting work in and getting nothing back. So I think… Fuck it. Why bother, the only thing I come back for is the people I met, otherwise I would have packed it all in by now. All I can do is edit videos. I am still thinking about other stuff, but I set up a new channel, a fresh start, I don’t want to back down from it. So really, I don’t give a monkeys arse if people think I copies MC because of a name. The name is similar but not whats behind it!

        • I think you should do your idea but on your existing channel. Jamesingtononthethird is a great name. It’s you, not 5 1/2 people like misscupcake is doing. Just do your idea and make yourself successful.. you can do it.. the 5 1/2 guys can be a spoof of misscupcake.. maybe you can respond to her videos. But I think you are doing well with your existing channel. Just keep plugging away.. you will get the hang of it soon! Also.. try to keep your videos at around a minute. Edit the HELL out of them to get them short.

          • Jamesingtononthethird is a great name

But Jamesingtononthethird is not my name! My name is jamesingtonthethird

Thats a good idea, I think I will have to try that, I just feel because I have a account warning already, I keep getting turned down, that it would be good to do it on a new channel. I know this sounds really really really stupid too but I noticed a load of partner channels end in “s” not all but, quite a few… Responding to her videos is a good idea too. Reminds me of something I can do, write things… I wrote your vampire story and I have done them for others too. I can get a song, paste it and change the words into something funny in a flash. I think the idea of a spoof of 5girls is brilliant. I am going to upload this five and a half guys episode I am about to make to jamesingtonthethird. Then have a word with MC about doing responses and replies to her video… EG, Misscupcake could say something like “my sister is a bitch” my response would be… Think yourself lucky at least you have a sister! I have a brother…. he is a bitch too…

also my subscirbers are on JT3

Do you think what I am doing now is a niche in itself??

        • I meant Jamesingtonthethird

Use it… I like it! Fred, charlestrippy, sxephil, lisanova, happyslip, communitychannel, etc. do not end in s.

          • I guess not…. Fred is very successful. And he is younger than I am, and believe it or not… I am probably more hyper than he is… But it’s that voice that drives me  !!!

            I think what I have done is…. nichey…

            Thanks Marina..

            x

A fine line between flattery and plagierism. I stand with James on this one (for now.) But it pretty much does not matter what I think. Has misscupcake returned your e-mail? I would suggest to wait until she has granted permission. Iit is not necessary for legality, but it may be the proper way to treat a friend. Perhaps a compromise? A name the still relates to your topic, but a little less blatant.
Now, if you actually satired misscupcake on fiveandahalfguys, that would be different.
