Some retro HotForWords for my 2 year anniversary!

Today marks my 2 year anniversary from the day I created my YouTube channel.  Here is a video from around that time that I thought would be funny to show again :-)  The origin of pusillanimous.

I got a bad heart so I do not try to get into any shoving matches with my foes. But I do try to get them with my brains instead of my brawn. Must have taken that 1989 History Book Club essay contest ADVISE THE PRESIDENT ON HISTORY too seriously. I was sending foreign radio stations all kinds of ideas abut how to defeat Washington DC! History Book Club was and is in Camp Hill, PA. did some preliminary history reading before I began to try to write about bible prophecy!

Yeah, must be review-time for the millions of we, the students :!: At least now I won’t forget the word lesson or how delicious you look in that barely-buttoned shirt, Miss Lady Marina  …Obviously the Mistress of English Vocab. seems to be extremely busy these days, (maybe if I wish upon the brightest Star tonight, she’ll take a siesta here in the ONE AND ONLY, KCMO & let me treat her to some SHOW-ME style hospitality!)but that’s just the price paid for SUCCESS.
    C-ya’ll later!

Herbert Hoover, “Rugged Individualism Speech” (October 22, 1928)
Herbert Hoover closed his campaign for the presidency in 1928 with this speech. It expresses the philosophy not only of Hoover, but of the Republican party during the 1920s. As you read, think about what sort of role Hoover sees for the federal government in the economic affairs of the nation. Why does Hoover favor such a role for the government? Also, think about in what sense Hoover***ís response to the Great Depression might be seen as an extension of the philosophy he articulates here.

I intend… to discuss some of those more fundamental principles upon which I believe the government of the United States should be conducted….

During one hundred and fifty years we have builded up a form of self government and a social system which is peculiarly our own. It differs essentially from all others in the world. It is the American system…. It is founded upon the conception that only through ordered liberty, freedom and equal opportunity to the individual will his initiative and enterprise spur on the march of progress. And in our insistence upon equality of opportunity has our system advanced beyond all the world.

During [World War I] we necessarily turned to the government to solve every difficult economic problem. The government having absorbed every energy of our people for war, there was no other solution. For the preservation of the state the [*****Federal Government became a centralized despotism*****] which undertook unprecedented responsibilities, assumed autocratic powers, and took over the business of citizens. To a large degree, we regimented our whole people temporally into a socialistic state. However justified in war time, if continued in peace-time it would destroy not only our American system but with it our progress and freedom as well.

When the war closed, the most vital of issues both in our own country and around the world was whether government should continue their wartime ownership and operation of many [instruments] of production and distribution. We were challenged with a… choice between the American system of rugged individualism and a European philosophy of diametrically opposed doctrines doctrines of paternalism and state socialism. The acceptance of these ideas would have meant the destruction of self-government through centralization… [and] the undermining of the individual initiative and enterprise through which our people have grown to unparalleled greatness.

The Republican Party [in the years after the war] resolutely turned its face away from these ideas and war practices…. When the Republican Party came into full power it went at once resolutely back to our fundamental conception of the state and the rights and responsibility of the individual. Thereby it restored confidence and hope in the American people, it freed and stimulated enterprise, it restored the government to a position as an umpire instead of a player in the economic game. For these reasons the American people have gone forward in progress….

There is [in this election]… submitted to the American people a question of fundamental principle. That is: shall we depart from the principles of our American political and economic system, upon which we have advanced beyond all the rest of the world….

I would like to state to you the effect that… [an interference] of government in business would have upon our system of self-government and our economic system. That effect would reach to the daily life of every man and woman. It would impair the very basis of liberty and freedom….

Let us first see the effect on self-government. When the Federal Government undertakes to go into commercial business it must at once set up the organization and administration of that business, and it immediately finds itself in a labyrinth…. Commercial business requires a concentration of responsibility. Our government to succeed in business would need to become in effect a despotism. There at once begins the destruction of self-government….

It is a false liberalism that interprets itself into the government operation of commercial business. Every step of bureaucratizing of the business of our country poisons the very roots of liberalism that is political equality, free speech, free assembly, free press and equality of opportunity. It is not the road to more liberty, but to less liberty. Liberalism should not be striving to spread bureaucracy but striving to set bounds to it….

Liberalism is a force truly of the spirit, a force proceeding from the deep realization that economic freedom cannot be sacrificed if political freedom is to be preserved. [An expansion of the governmentís role in the business world] would cramp and cripple the mental and spiritual energies of our people. It would extinguish equality and opportunity. It would dry up the spirit of liberty and progress… For a hundred and fifty years liberalism has found its true spirit in the American system, not in the European systems.

I do not wish to be misunderstood…. I am defining general policy…. I have already stated that where the government is engaged in public works for purposes of flood control, of navigation, of irrigation, of scientific research or national defense… it will at times necessarily produce power or commodities as a by-product.

Nor do I wish to be misinterpreted as believing that the United States is a free-for-all and devil-take-the-hindmost. The very essence of equality of opportunity and of American individualism is that there shall be no domination by any group or [monopoly] in this republic…. It is no system of laissez faire….

I have witnessed not only at home but abroad the many failures of government in business. I have seen its tyrannies, its injustices, its destructions of self-government, its undermining of the very instincts which carry our people forward to progress. I have witnessed the lack of advance, the lowered standards of living, the depressed spirits of people working under such a system….

Dear Marina, I went on a dinner date Friday night, and afterwards, we did a “walk and talk” stroll around the mall to look at window displays and chat. Well, I told her about this dream I had with you, Marina!
We were at a formal dance and I was wearing a rented tuxedo, and you were beautiful in a yellow strapless gown, while we danced the waltz. Your hair and makeup were perfect and you smiled beautifully as you waltzed so smoothly and flawlessly, it was like dancing with a real ballerina! The waltz ended, everyone applauded and you hugged me and started to kiss me, but the split-second before our lips touched, I had a surge of adrenaline and I woke up in my own bed, in the middle of the night! It was such joy to dance with you and so shocking to wake up!
After my date heard this, she stood on tiptoes and gave me a real kiss, then and there! “You deserved that”, she said. “And let this be a lesson between reality and dreams.”
Congratulations on two years of success, Marina! You succeed because you inspire sweet dreams. I wish you many more years of great success!

  29. Dear Marina,
Congratulations on your 2nd anniversary. Please provide the origin of the idiom [living high on the hog]. Thank you and much success in the year to come.

  30. [Cipher] has an interesting secondary meaning I had never heard of before that was published in the Washington Post today: “Washington’s chorus directors and organists have simply learned to adapt to ciphers, which, in organ terminology, refers to the sounding of a pipe when no key has been pressed.”
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/02/27/AR2009022703187.html?hpid=features1&hpv=local. I suppose it comes from the same root “sifr” meaning “empty or nothing,” but I haven’t found the other definition or its origin anywhere, and the usual definition has an interesting etymology too.

Please respond and put my befuddlement to rest. Why, is the prefix loq so lonely? Today was the first day for me to attend your class. I hope by my inquiry I can have a more personalized lesson. You’re welcome, but Marina gets most of the credit. I’m just watching to see her long, slender legs, her bare shoulders, nice knees, tiny waist, and pretty face. See, I’m already pretty good with the English language. My SAT scores were at 97th percentile. Do I enjoy seeing the origins of obscure words, like “pussillanimous”? Sure, but it’s mostly because of the messenger, and not the message!

      • Oh she’s pretty? I hadn’t notice. I guess I’m more influenced by the gray matter between someones sexy ears. SATs? I don’t think I ever took them. I’m sure I would fail. I’m not that smart. I still can’t find the existence of gravitons.

        • hs4mm says: 62.1.1.1

Not understanding modern physics (physics after Newton) would go to prove that you are sane — almost all the physics theory (explanations of reality) after Newton is garbage since the authors’ premise is that reality is unknowable.

          • Same thing goes for time. But now we just talking Philosophy and not getting anything done.

          • If it were not for the fact that reality is unknowable, we would not have free will. If matter and energy could be entirely comprehended (even if it required a being bigger than the universe to do it), then it would follow that their intereaction would be predictable, and hence, things could happen in only one way. But as they are not, things can go either way depending on what one does.

For a concrete example, should I tickle M’s belly button with a feather, she could either giggle or paste me one in the schnozz. So I would have to decide if it was worth the risk. See? Free will — QED.

        • hs4mm says: 62.1.1.2

This is actually a reply to CampKohler’s 62.1.1.1.2, but I ran out of reply levels. To make up, there is a tiny bit on time at the end.

          1) Only human consciousness has free will. And free will is a person’s choice to think or not to think.

          2) Human consciousness is a fact of reality, and free will is an attribute of it.

          3) The laws of nature that are applicable to inanimate matter do not apply to animate matter; there is no need to explain consciousness and its functioning in terms applicable to inanimate matter.

          4) Causality just means that a thing can only act in accordance to its nature. Causality is not limited to action-reaction type of causality that is applicable to inanimate matter. The principal of final causation is applicable to human consciousness.

          5) The universe is everything — there is nothing outside the universe.

(Captain Jack mentioned time: There is no such thing as the “age of the universe” — the universe has always been. There is no such thing a “time” out there; time is just a form of measuring two actions: The earth is revolving, and I am composing this response: how much has the earth revolved since I began composing this response?)

    • Nice comment and you think you are right. I think Marina should thank you for comment and for your thought. So right I just found this site and its pretty cool. All though I am shure with government conspiracy and all I be slandered and defimated out of here like a job. I really think people like your self is why Marina so popular it takes fans to make a star popular. I think Marina is the kind of women to appreciate her fans and not just take them for granted. Thanks for the pictures Captain nice shots. See ya

      • Glad you enjoy the site. It’s good to learn something new every day. Helps keep the mind sharp and starves off alzheimer’s disease. Reports say sudoku does very little in putting off Alzheimer’s.
Funny you spell the word (shure) like I do. I’m always backspacing to delete the damn ‘h’. I wonder why I spell ’sure’ that way. Damn I did it again! LOL….
Yes if it wasn’t for all of us fans, she would be just another YT er. She does very much appreciate her fans.
Love the photos? Yeah I’m still amazed I drive something that big. But I forget I used to drive a battleship. The USS Missouri BB-63. I shook like a leaf the first time I drove (pilot is the correct term) the BB. She weighed in at 58,000 tons and had 1,500 crew on board. Their lives were at my hands when I steered her for 3 years off and on.

        See ya.

        • I CAN’T BELIEVE THE SPELL CHECK SURE SOUNDS LIKE A MILITARY HELLO ITS SHURE ISN’T IT??OR IS IT SHORE NO THATS WHAT A CAPTAIN LOVES TO SEE AFTER A 20 FOOT CREST NIGHT AAAA!!!!!!!!!!!

          • I know what you mean. That’s why I hate the English language spelling rules that there are none. The only rule I really see in spelling is an agreed spelling of a word that both parties understand. Interestingly enough, if people use a word often it becomes correct spelling. Go figure…

I use a Google tool bar in FireFox browser. It has a fantastic spell check. It does a good job at guessing what I was trying to spell. Thought you still need to know what the correct word should be. A good spell checker in my opinion should be able to read the content of a sentence and suggest a correct spelling.

Yes I love the docks after a rough night at sea. Interesting thing is it’s really not that bad out there if you know where to go. I know of a couple that sailed around the world and only seen one storm that was just unbearable. So it is possible to find waters that are decent.

          • Thanks for the info I did not realize my google bar had the spell check cool. Now I will wright like the genius I look like. Hay that rhymes pretty cool. Anyways I love to travel the world as well and get the hell away from the English language myself. I really don’ t like the Government in the USA they have really messed up a dude like me. I hope if you live in the USA that you are having fun. I would have been, but they came up with this conspiracy on me and pretty much defimated me out of work and a life. Well I could talk about this mental abuse for days. My point is I love to travel the world by sea. See YA Captain

          • Yeah the Google thing is really cool. I have been using it for over a year and I love it still. The only draw back it that it requires an internet connection which is not always available to boaters everywhere. I wonder if it works on an iPhone?
Yeah I know exactly what you mean by the government screwing peoples lives up. They go by the book and if the books are messed up they still go by the book until the books have been changed. But have no fear for I hear that there are going to be some big changes on how the US government works. I hear every month there is some corrupted so and so leaving office. It’s beginning to look like rats leaving a sinking ship. The good thing is the ship is not sinking. Three of our best officials have left Washington state to go work for Obama. One of them Ron Sims is a really good guy. I used to do security for his office in Seattle. I’m going to miss him.
Yeah sailing around the world is a good thing. It really detaches one from the rat race of life that eats at your soul. People don’t see this as I do but I learned from some sailors what this feels like when you do detach. Many things really don’t matter. Then one begins to experience true freedom. I’m going to be interviewing some famous people (one of them you have seen in the movies) that have gone sailing and learned how it changed their lives by reducing stress. You would be surprised who I run into that are boaters/sailors.

        • I recently read an article that stated grouchy old men have a dramatically reduced occurence of Alzheimer’s, so we should be fine.

        • Hi , Capt. Jack thought it was pretty cool that you helmed the Missouri like that.
here’s a site you might like to check out
          http://www.combinedfleet.com/baddest.htm

always like a good game of “harpoon” myself.

          • Yeah that was an experience of a lifetime. She will never again set sail. I’m glad I tried to play on every toy she had. I helped run the MARS station. Worked a bit in the CCTV station. Fired the 16″ 50s. Hollystoned the decks. Got to see Cher make video on the decks of the Mo. I was even was in the movie ‘Under Siege’ and made for TV show ‘Super Carrier’. I was just an extra in those shots. Nothing special. My favorite part was to be able to sail round the world twice. Well one an half times. You see I went over half way round the world and came back. So I say it’s the same distance just a different route. My nick names on board was Admiral Byrd and Inspector Gadget. Funny names hu? So it was a love hate relationship for my time in the Navy. Love the boat but hated some of the people. Lots of gang activity. :-(

I checked out the site. Thanks! Love to see the Iowa class kicking butt!!!!!!!

Where does the phrase [spring chicken] come from anyway? I hear it in reference to older adults but i always wondered why people said it.

  52. My dad was quite a wordsmith. Years ago, when his company was being unionized, he started using the word, [picayune]. I thought he was referring to picky union activities, (he was, but I misinterpreted the sound). It seems to have a similar meaning as pusillanimous . . . well the small part, anyway.

Congratulations, Marina, on your 2nd year anniversary of HotForWords. May you have continued success!

  53. Marina, Kak BaIIIH AeJIA?

I was wondering if you could do the antonym for pusillanimous. The antonym is me with a yacht and hotty like you. See YA    [strong, large, yoked, thick]

    Hey Marina!
    Hey all!

I can’t believe how many things I’ve learned in this time. I had great improvements in my English class, and I had some very interesting discussions with my teacher. I’m certain that I wouldn’t have made such progresses on my own, and for that I thank hotforwords.com, and special thanks to Marina:
    Thank you, Marina!

Though I’m not all that yet, and there’s much room for improvement, so I’m looking forward to many more years of videos! :-)

    • neuroway says: 54.1

      Hey Chemikal!

You must be sitting in the front rows of the class with the other nerdies, eh?

      • Oh, thanks neuroway for thinking I’m nerdy. Actually I think I’m not that smart! :D
I do like to bring up fun origins of some words, in some contexts. Like my En class, for example. My teacher is a smart lady, but too bad she’s totally a-technological… She thinks that the internet is owned and hosted by Google.com, and Yahoo is some virus! :D
I give her a lot of credit, because she learned everything from books, and her grammar and speech are impeccable.
My faculty teaches all its courses in one of 3 foreign languages, and I’m very grateful for having a place where I can practice and develop my English skills, while also learning something new in the same time.

  55. Can i request 2 word origins? [Heinous] and [Hideous]? And Yes I love your old videos although the new ones are informative as well love the new way you do the guess the word game…

  56. dzioobson says: 52

Hi. I would like to konw the orgin word [classical]. And btw: do you like classical music? Thank you in advance.

  57. Miss Marina, a most sincere congratulation is in order then as most businesses fail within their first 2 years. You’ve obviously been an astounding success.

Aside from your breathtaking looks and ubercute personality (really, it is next to impossible to be both sexy and cute at once–Heidi Klum really is the only other person who comes to mind (not bad company huh?)) that first lured us all into your classroom for what ends up being genuine and enjoyable education, I have to say that the intangible, your magnetism that hooks us, is your happiness. You’re gleeful really. You truly enjoy what it is you do. You love it and you’ve combined your intellectual curiosity with the precious entrepreneurial spirit to earn a living pursuing your passion and while optimizing the capacity to reach, teach, and influence myriad people everywhere.

So, very well done and thank you! To many more years of success and spreading happiness…

    Cheers

 Just got this in my email:
In honor of the mother of the octuplets, Denny’s is offering a new breakfast meal called the Suleman: You get eight eggs, no sausage, and the guy next to you has to pay the bill.

  62. Hey Marina,

Congratulations to your II. Anniversary \o/

but I’ve got a word request for you:

(I warn you, I’m german so there could be one mistake or two  )

    So the word is [Harlot].
I heard it in some songs and it appears to have several meanings.

In …uhm i think The beast and the Harlot I think it stands for a beauty (in german “Die Schöne und das Biest) or just a woman in general.

But in “Diadems” by Megadeth it stands for Babylon (the “bitch” in the bible)”The Harlot puddles (what does “puddle” mean by the way  ) for her lies, from where she speaks”

so thats all i guess, i’ll wait for any answers

Guten Abend (Guten Morgen!) mein freund vic_rattlehead,
You left a video link on the Forum and I get an error message “This video is not available in your country.”

Could you post on that same Forum page the title of the video and by whom it is and other info so I may search for it on another video site? Vielen Dank!

I presume that you are in DE and that video is on the DE YouTube site? What part of DE? I’m in So. Calif. near LA and lots of foreign content is blocked, presumably due to the owner’s first rights in determining distribution such as cable, Satellite, etc.

By the way, your English is perfect. Forgive my German, and do correct it. It’s been a lot of years…

    •
      By the way, vic_rattlehead,
Maybe 3-5 years ago, I used to watch videos on http://www.clipfish.de About 1-2 years ago, they blocked access to that site to the US. I even tried a slew of proxy servers, with no luck. Coincidentally, the DE proxies which theorretically would have worked, I also could not access.

    •
      Hi vic,
Thank you for posting the Metallica – One lyrics in the forum.
I posted 3 different links to that video. Love it.

    •
Vic, WOW!!!! I guessed where the Metallica One lyrics came from. I had to look it up in wiki to make sure, and sure enough:

“The song’s theme is based on Dalton Trumbo’s 1939 novel Johnny Got His Gun.”

That book was banned at one time and I read it after it became available. Have you read it? It’s a short novel and I recommend everyone read it.

So, I agree with your passion on the forum regarding the Metallica’s One video. Awesome, thanks for posting that info.
      Love it!!! Vielen Dank!!!

      • hm unfortunaly (thats not right,is it? )

no, I haven’t read this book yet, but I wrote it on my “To-do-list”

and yes i heard, that it was banned during WWII and Vietnamwar in the U.S.A.

who, one look at the Vinyl and there it comes ONE!
I Love The whole Justice-Record Deep Lyrics, great Intrumental.

I’m learning To Live Is To Die on Electric Guitar right now and its just amazing

and in a few weeks I’ll do a Presentation for Religion Class and I’ll take some Songs with me like Eye of the Beholder, Leper Messiah or The Unforgiven … oh and I’ll ask my teacher (she kinda looks like marina  )if I can take “Dyers Eve” too

wow I guess I’ll stand in front of the Class for the whole lesson :O

      • oh and in the Music video they sed Scenes from The “Jonny got his gun” Movie (I wrote the words in the lyrics, too)

Really deep especially when Jonny screams “I can’t live like this, I can’t.
Please, no, I can’t. Help me! Please help me!
Mother? Where are you? Please help me mother, I’m lying here and I can’t wake up.”

It nearly brings tears to my eyes (like in that acoustic-middle part in To Live is To Die)

    • Germans, Romanians and countrymen, lend me your ears. I want to convince M to put up a slang or colloquial phrase for the week and include an equivalent in other languages (along with the literal English translation and an explanation of what it means and how it is used). She would have to get a group of others together to cooperate on a regular basis. What do you think? Could it be done?

  63. neuroway says: 45

    Happy 2nd anniversary miss Marina!

You are without a doubt the coolest philology teacher on this planet! And I must admit that you have a certain, undeniable talent for singing and dancing too. As soon as you move it a little, your curvy silhouette and lips seem to jump out of the computer, flying in the front of our eyes and into our brains, tatooing words inside them, here and there, defying all logic and reason!

For this poor old [technophobe], can someone explain the joke about the Pentium 585.99999999999?

      • Maybe it refers to the minor design error that was found in the Pentium. The number then would be saying, “Slightly less than a 586.”

As to the number 586, Intel started making CPU chips and calling them 8086 / 8088/ 80186 / 80286 / 80386 / 80486. When it came time to go to the 586, Intel decided that they wanted to be able to register the name as a trademark so that no other maker could use it, so they went with Pentium, which was invented for the purpose. The next in the x86 series would have been the 686, but since they already had Pentium established, they stuck with that and called it the Pentium II*.

Imagine: the latest technology and they’re using Roman numerals to name it.

        —-
*Sounds like Second of Five, doesn’t it? Very Borg-like.

As mentioned below, Marina, you’ve come a long way in two years. Now you are at home in front of the camera and your videos and performances are much more polished.
Nevertheless this was one of my favourite videos, and has a fresh and innocent (but experimenting with naughty) quality which is very engaging.
Congratulations on your YouTube anniversary and may you continue to prosper, and entertain and educate us with new videos for many more years, in spite of YTs apparent efforts to [thwart] you.
Just one thing – two remixes in one week – I hope HFW isn’t becoming like Sky TV, all ads and repeats and not much new. {Just joking}
    Here’s to the future.

  72. skaterguy says: 35

congrats on the milestone. I dont think it was all that bad at that time.

Is it OK if I blame you for turning me into a twitter addict… what?… is that like, the third sign of denial, blaming someone else for…
Retro, has it been that long already. It’s been fun to follow (watch) & listen to (watch) your videos, and even more fun to comment (complain etc.) about your subjects. Wishing (woot) you well as you pursue your goals, but mostly, for you to achieve that elusive contentment factor… To be happily living above your circumstances. There’s been a lot of eyes looking at you, with all kinds of advise… you shoulds & you shouldn’t haves thrown in for good measure. You seem to listen politely & take it all in, then do your thing, in an almost experimental kinda way.
Lookin forward to what’s in store for you down the road & thanx for letting me be a part of this part of the trip. Travel (the road) wisely, it’s one-way…

  91. Hi Marina – love the site. How about the word [ROBOT] I’ve heard where it comes from once before and I think it was Romanian or Czech -from Rubota – for hard work. you could play some techno music & do “The Robot”. – thanks & congratulations on your 2nd year anniversary. steve c.

Every woman deserves to receive something special on their anniversary, Marina. Unfortunately, I don’t know what to give you.

All my best wishes and continued success for many years to come.

  93. Wow, so much has happened in those two years with over 400 HotForWords videos and celebrating a two year anniversary. I’m getting teary eyed but I won’t cry. I not like that, really, not a maudlin.

  94. Howdy, Marina!

Congratulations! Here’s to many more, you special lady!

    Always.

  95. Wow, looking back really makes you think on the following:

-How time flew. It only felt like only maybe a year has passed, let alone two.
-The improvements. You’re much more charismatic, the videos are dynamic thanks to advanced video editing. The changes throughout were so small that looking back; just wow, look how far you’ve came.
-Your dog! It felt empty without him running around in the background causing all sorts of stuff.

All in all, Happy 2nd Anniversary!

  96. Congratulations on your two years anniversary Marina,
and many more years to come.

I remember when I fist saw that video, two years ago, there was something magical about that video.
What?, it’s been two years?

I also think this is one of the most frequent vids that we throw back at the “drive-bies.” I wish I could stick around for the anniversary party, but it is time for somebody to go to work.

Again, happy anniversary to Lady M. Best wishes for your continued success.
