Nerd Word of the Day: Friendiligence
Friendiligence: the amount of time and effort it takes to accept, add and maintain your social network friends!
People are actually trying to make this a word.. and others are trying to say that it is the act of gathering intelligence on your friends through social networks. Perhaps a look at the way it is spelled might show a lack of intelligence in the latter group.
It’s obviously a combination of friend and diligence! And no, I don’t think it should become a word!

“friendiligence” seems awkward to me I’d go with “qwerkies” instead. a combination of “quirky” and “network” as in social networking. “QWERKING”
I’m inventing a new word here
INTELLIDULGENCE: The indulging of activities by one’s self or in groups in activities that are considered brainy, nerdy, and intellectually stimulating. also see “brain orgy”
marina.. you got fb? i wanna be your friend…. please?
but really, i’ve been using fb for awhile, yet i never heard of this word.. guess i dont’ befriend much nerds.. think that i should be THE NERD among my friends.. and pass the words to my friends..
thanx for the new word
I think people use the term ‘friend’ too broadly. A friend is somebody you know and like. Respect and trust are implied, and spying isn’t needed.
The majority of online friends are no more than acquaintances. Also, there’s the matter that if you do find somebody that you want to be a friend and you spy on them instead of give them the trust they deserve, then you pretty much destroy your value as a friend by virtue of your actions.
Acquaintances have their value. Sometimes it’s fun treading water in the shallow end of the pool.
You make a lot of sense with this post.
obfuskation…The new age is more d ivided than ever. Online is now conscience of concrete conceit and competes.
Excuse me, Teacher… in all fairness, diligence is after all what one does–doing all you can to confirm the facts–when conducting intelligence. So, it’s only wrong if the latter group is stating the etymology of ‘friendiligence’ is literally coming from the separate words ‘friend’ and ‘intelligence’. Instead, aren’t they merely defining it?
Notwithstanding this defense, I agree this should not be a word as it qualifies for the ‘trying too hard’ file. I admit a couple of the Nerd Words are amusing, but this one is a total poser; a wannabe.
hotfor_hotforwords, I think you’re giving them too much credit

I second [poser].
And speaking of posing, Teacher did you happen to see my cheesy [limerick] before the Annotations lesson got deep-sixed?
oh and duh . . . [deep-six]
[poser] Europe’s gift to America…frienddiligentexctszia…Marina’s brains to train new words…[Baltic]…free your bacon
Sounds like a lot of work, I have very little friendiligence. I’ve noticed a term used for people with excessive friendiligence – friend whore.
The sitcom Friends introduced the word:
Frienemy A “toxic” person who poses as a friend but subconsciously or consciously wishes you harm.
it’s a cute word !
fer shur! fer shur!
It’s a valley word
and ther is no cure…
gag me with a spOOn!
Here’s a Nerd Word of the Day: NERDAR (nerd+radar)
–A made-up electronic device for detecting nerds! (Ironically, would most likely be invented by nerds!)
@Lady M, do you know if someone has a site advertising American wives to Russian men? Why would so many people want to go from Russia and Bulgaria to the US? Is the rest of the world that screwed up?
And no, I am not being my usual sarcastic self.
I am asking this for a reason.
Are you looking for a divorce, Bob, or trying to sell your daughter?
Uh, I can think of at twenty-eight different, clever little comments
(and counting,) and every one would put my ass in a sling.
For once in my life, I will keep my big mouth shut.
from russia with love.
I have noticed that friendiligence can take away a whole bunch of time, that I could be using to spend with my family, doing some school work, playing my guitar… As long as I don’t expand past HFW, I should be alright.
What about the amount of time and effort it takes to accept, add and maintain the sanity of the people who actually want to use this as a word?
AAAARRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!
No.
A combination of “friend” and “diligence”? No, I don’t think it should become a word, either. Friendship requires more than diligence. You additionally need to know about your friend’s needs and objectives, and you help your friend attain good accomplishments. You have to be supportive when your friend is in need, and have pride for your friend when he or she does succeed.
It would be nice if you were my friend, but it’s not as easily done as by asking.

..shoot me
ok..spieski…new words makes for old ways and strays
The internet has expanded the definition of the word friend. Now an internet friend is more of a quasi friend.
e.g. Those friend request that come to you on YT, my standard reply is “If you are willing to help me move than you can be my friend.” ps please bring your truck.
‘Friendtenance’ sounds like a word for internet friend management.
but how?
Marina,
…Friendiligence, never heard this word before, from your descriptions of it i would have too more aptly call it acquaintiligence, people who I’ve come to now through working relationships or friends of friends but not anyone i would necessarily work at making a personal friend or maintaining any significant amount or type of information upon.
These descriptions just don’t fit into my personal definitions of friend or the people i would consider my friends, with a few exceptions made on the basis of trustworthiness.
It is to hard to spell to be put in to common use.
I’m a nerd, geek, what have you, but so far, not one of these words are ones I’d use, ever. Glad we’re on the same page, teacher.
I certainly HOPE you don’t use these words
Sound more like corporate profiling to me this persons are not my friends unless i have something to profit from knowing and maintaining a relationship from them, couldn’t actually call it with “them”
