Nerd Word of the Day: Bacn

bacn-thumbBacn: Email you want, but not right now.

Thanks JoeCascio on Twitter for this one.

You have the problem with Spam, which we all hate.. but then you start to get all these email notifications from Facebook, Twitter and MySpace, that start to clog up your inbox.  They are not emails you don’t want.. they are just emails that you don’t have time to look at right now!

Coined at PodCamp Pittsburgh 2 last year, theyspm were obviously playing off the Spam name.. and I guess bacon is a step up from Spam, hence the name.

They even had t-shirts for a little while there!

Got a message from the bacon enthusiasts at bacn.com which said: “We take issue with your word of the day … we believe it means “friggin’ awesome bacon” … kthxbai … :-)

The TechBurgh blog was the first blog ever to post about Bacn. I was one of the 4 people who came up with the term at PodCamp Pittsburgh in 2007.
    See the historic post here:

Dear Marina, Actually, I think bacon is worse than Spam because bacon has more fat, salt, and nitrates.
When Spam was made for the US Army in WWII, they specified lots of fat in it because it provided more calories in a small container. Soldiers were able to do a full day’s work on one can of Spam. The US gave away Spam to many countries during and after WWII. We even gave Spam to the Russians, so it might have started the Cold War. Some countries in Europe, like Denmark made their own version of canned Spam, so it’s true, imitation is the highest form of flattery.
For health reasons, I can’t eat Spam, but it’s interesting to see there’s a version that includes bacon in it! (I don’t think it tastes good!)
So “Bacn” is e-mail that’s better than spam, because you will save it and read it later. I guess “Bacn” applies to most of the e-mails I actually read. I appreciate e-mail because it desn’t require a 42-cent stamp to mail it. And postage goes up to 44 cents on May 11th.

As much as I might be disinterested in these terms, I cannot look away. Perhaps, I do need to keep abreast of this trend… or perhaps I really should get a log cabin off in the wilderness somewhere.

What annoys me is how someone sends out batch e-mails and leaves your e-mail address exposed for the whole world to see.
