Hi Marina,

I haven't been on YouTube very long, so I don't know if this has been addressed or not, but why didn't YouTube ask the users (who generate content) if they would be willing to pay, say $9.99/year, to help cover costs so changes like these wouldn't have to be made? Many people are upset because they simply were not given a choice in the matter. Newbies and small fish seem to be getting run over. Do you know what the stats would be on income if they tried working with the small-time users instead of against them?

Thanks,
Monica a.k.a

Just as long as copyright isn't taken from you. Read the find print.
I've had but negative experiences with companies like Sony - who put out a HD5 walkman (it's supposed to be a _Hard Drive) but it doesn't distinguish between what is already copyright and what is your own material, so whatever goes onto the device that's yours still cannot be put back onto your PC (say, if you've bought a new motherboard). What's mine is mine, and no one else should have the right to take it. Sony wasn't able or willing to deal with this copyright issue. If I had the money and energy, I'd sue them. But read the fine print....
Where are consumer rights when you need them?
For both Sony and YouTube you cannot find a proper hyperlink to send your feedback or get any personal support. (Doesn't change even when you become a paying customer I imagine).

More great media attention. Way to go, Marina!

As far as I'm concerned they can put movie and tv reruns, sports, or any commercialized crap on there they want. I completely understand they need to find a way to intelligently monetize it or it's all over. For everybody. I agree with your position, Marina, as long as they keep sites like yours totally separated from the rest.
My viewing habits won't be affected at all. I'll never want to use YT to see that stuff. Just keep giving me my Marina and HFW.

What do I think. Epic fail for the current YT partners. It's not about bringing more people to YT that is at issue. Looking at the numbers of visitors this is a non-issue. Hulu has 2% of what YT has and is making big bank from it's proven business model. So what has Hulu proven here? UGC has very little value for advertisers do not want to be associated with UGC that might put a bad image on their products or services. Even I would not want my ads anywhere near Athenewins content. None of their viewers would want to purchase my services. It would be a waste of my advertising dollars to do so. That's the simple fact of business advertising. Where will my ads be place next to and what will I see in my ROI? Period!!!!!

How is a low budget producers going to compete with BIG budget networks? It's not going to happen! What makes a low budget product survive is the chance of being bought out big budget companies or heavily funded from a VC . That is how the model has worked for many years and still does today. "You really don't make any REAL money from a business until the day you sell it." The planet is littered with examples of this and this concept and is a subject that is taught at major universities.
Owning a small business is just a job. Building and selling is were the money is made. Just ask any professional entrepreneur or venture capitalist. VCs will always ask you to state your {exit strategy} in your business plan. That strategy is how are you going to sell your business or desolve it. This is basic knowledge of any business major.

So unless there is a plan for all the YT partners in selling their show to network TV, they really are just employees (ok not really)/ contractors of YT. This term partners is false. They are not partners in the true sense of the word in a business arrangement.

I see YT not phasing out UGC but more like putting them in the back of the store behind the curtain with the other adult material. YT will never get rid of UGC for they generate mega traffic. In other words they are the engine for YT but will be hidden under the hood of the car so the ugly thing is out of view.

The most important part is that Marina is going into this positively, examining the situation, gaining input from various sources, and finding out the method that <i>is going to work</i> for her. She is not bitchin' and moanin' about how it's "not fair." It is the way it is, and Marina is finding the favorable conditions that come along with nearly all challenges.

I hope YT keeps the user-made vids a priority. Marina's logic seems sound in this. If, however, YT is simply chasing the almighty $, then Marina and others will need to demonstrate to YT how their user-made vids will be an economic asset to YT and ultimately to Google. I believe it was ChaCha's comment below, that Marina's format is more of a school type of situation. I agree with that. The educational opportunities need to be kept at the fore, and everything else built around that.

Marina seems to be way ahead of all of us in this. She has a plan, and has shown she is willing to change that plan as circumstances change. Keep up the awesome job, Lady Marina. We will <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UpQ6OESv24A" rel="nofollow">stand by you</a> :cool:

Sorry to say my viewing habits aren't going to change just to satisfy some ad executives. I didn't sign up to you tube to watch ads, but was a good source for entertainment where ad content could be easily ignored. The premium content channels will be regulated into the same category as my tv viewing habits where i start changing channels when an ad comes on. Since there is no other channels similar too you tubes premium channel to switch too, it will be just something i wouldn't find very much use for,and will just ignore all its content to compensate for a lack of other similar channels.

I've got some friends who are regularly watching US TV shows on the internet here. Not on official sites, of course, the big media companies get neither royalty payments nor a share of ad revenues.

If the American media companies don't want our money, that's their decision. I don't care about that. People who want to watch these shows early here can do so, and there's nothing that the old media companies can do about it.

Good point. As my grandmother was always saying, "Never a door closes but another one opens."
Since Marina was spouting Julius Caesar in the Guess the Word Game, here is another quote in a similar vein:-<blockquote>
“There is a tide in the affairs of men,
Which, taken at the flood, leads to fortune;
Omitted, all the voyage of their life
Is bound in shallows and in miseries”
(Julius Caesar, William Shakespeare, 1564-1616)

Life’s greatest laurels do not always go to the most intelligent, smartest, or strongest; more often than not, they rather attend those that recognize and seize their opportunities.

Everybody gets opportunities, but not everybody recognizes and seizes those opportunities. Even among those who do recognize an opportunity, only very few have the courage to take the chance and seize their opportunities.

To enjoy greater measures of personal success and achievements, you must develop the discernment and courage to recognize and seize your opportunities.

God makes the waves: surfers just ride them!

As William Shakespeare recognized centuries ago, the dynamics of personal success in life are similar to those of the waves of the sea. Surfers will readily understand this analogy: we do not build the waves, but it’s up to us to ride them when they come!
- From <a href="http://wdfavour.com/recognize-and-seize-your-opportunities" rel="nofollow">Discover Yourself.</a>
</blockquote>
I'm sure Marina will find a way to profit from these changes, one way or another.

Maybe they're targeting at smaller companies that are currently selling videos on their own website. Football clubs here, for example, sell videos of their Bundesliga and European Cup matches on their own website. Many of these clubs have an own Youtube-channel. Why not selling their videos via Youtube?
