Illeist. James thinks we all know that James would never refer to himself in the third person.

    • beevee14 says: 88.1

Scottish lords used to have people who looked after all of the game on there land called Ghillies. When they would go hunting or looking for poachers(which was a very serious crime) they would make up a suit much like the ones you see today.

  2. “Reactionary” could be the word

  3. I think the answer has something to do with stirring a “reaction” either in others, or in one’s self, etc. As in the incredible Hulk’s case he was affected by gamma ray radiation and was chemically altered which caused fits of anger to Dr. Bruce Banner which then transformed him into a raging behometh or something of that nature.

  4. As it stands now I don’t think anyone has come up with the correct word for this guess the word game yet.

  5. hs4mm says: 83

What happened to the rate of views when the title and still-image were made hulkish on YT? Why doesn’t the still image look hulkish here? Can actually see two titles on YT “My blood is boyle ‘ing” and “Hulk smash”!

  7. Hi, I know the definition of this word, but have forgotten the word, for I only heard it once. The definition is [a word which means the opposite of itself]. Erudite is example of this work, it means, Highly educated and it can also mean uneducated. Thank you in advance.

  8. 【ツ】I have an announcement to make. It’s Cha Cha’s birthday. He’s a 154 years young. Why did I just type that? The phase ‘years young’ doesn’t really make it sound that much younger. Though it would be better to say ‘He has 154 years of experience. He then must be an expert in field of whatever he is expert at.’

Anywho, I hope you all wish him a happy B-day! I think he could use some happy words.

  10. Outstanding appearance on O’Reilly. You have the prettiest “beef” anywhere on the net  .

I would like to request the phrase [one fell swoop]. It’s one of those phrases that everyone instinctively knows, but where the heck did it come from? I heard it the other day and thought you might be able to help.

    • beevee14 says: 78.1

When people harvested crops with scythes, they would try to get the most with “one fell swoop”

      • Makes sense, I suppose. But hardly as fun as a video from Marina would be.

Actually I thought it might have something to do with lumberjacking.

        • I’m a skeptic of everything. Especially schools. I can not trust even my 12 years of basic eduction. Too many myths out there being tauted as fact. As for Wiki, it’s a great place to start. Much of wiki is correct. I try to look up there sources to see if I come up with the same conclusion. But hey, nothing is perfect. By the way, Marina is usually the first one to spout out that wiki is not to be trusted. She even did a lesson about it.

  20. Is it, perhaps, illeism?

  21. esojleugim says: 66

The answer is “”"”"illeism”"”"”, but I think that also a correct answer would be “famous people”, if you go out to the street and ask the same question I think everybody would answer “famous people” or something that has to be with fame.

    Well it’s my opinion…

I would like to know why the prefix [Jack] has been associated with so many words and phrases. These include:

    [Jack Mormon][Jackfruit][Jack Rabbit]

  27. I believe the word that describes them all is

FAMOUS or INFAMOUS for a few of them.

I would like to request the words/phrases:

    [Pro-, con-, in-, dis-]

They would all be illeists. They speak of themselves in the third person. The funny thing, I also do this when speaking to my grandkids. I will say “Papa wants to …” or “You can use Papa’s computer.” Somebody also does this on this website, but doesn’t do it anywhere else. Mebbe Somebody has multiple personalities. :???: Or mebbe somebody is just plain bonkers.

  29. Hi Marina!

It’s good to see you and hear from you again, and as always you deserve 5 stars or more.

The word that describes all these people is vain.

    Thanks

Be realistic if you do it.

  33. quiet_dave says: 54

    Marina,

I was wondering if you could tell me what your research uncovers about [drug store cowboys]? I’m not sure if it is a derogatory term or not. I presume it means a “want to be” cowboy, or someone who dresses like a cowboy, but has never sat a horse.

Love your appearances whenever I manage to catch them on O’Reilly.

    Dave

    • breezeh says: 54.1

Drugstore Cowboy is a movie about prescription drug addicts who rob drug stores, presumably in a cowboyesque fashion. I think that’s pretty much the origin and meaning of the phrase. Hope that helps in case Marina doesn’t get around to it.

      • Thanks, for your response but I’ve read the term used long before the movie in the 50’s and 60’s. So, I believe it has another association or meaning. Are you perhaps, thinking of the movie “Midnight Cowboy,” about drug addicts in New York city made back in the late 60’s or early 70’s?

        • “Drugstore Cowboy” IS a movie with Matt Dillon. It isn’t what this term is about. A drugstore cowboy goes back to the time when all the young people hung at the drugstore. If you dressed up like cowboy and you where at the drugstore you probably weren’t much of a cowboy. So, a d.c. is somebody who dressed a part, acted like a badass, but was a , uumm, not a very tuff guy!

  46. Word request: [facade]

I was watching a TV show called ‘One on One’ and they used the word facade. I hear this word often and I use is it often. But what I find interesting is that it is used to describe someone making a false image of them selfs to make one look favorable.

Here is what I found at The Dictionary dot com site:

    Facade

    fa·çade also fa·cade (f-säd) n.
    1. The face of a building, especially the principal face.
    2. An artificial or deceptive front: ideological slogans that were a façade for geopolitical power struggles.

Has no reference to false image people portray. What gives?

Watched your Fan video from Andrew at YT. If he would watch 91 Educational Videos in a day, and I’ll bet that’s not uncommon for a new Student, and you have like 420 right now – so he can keep tuning in…how many could he watch in a lifetime?

    A lot – I’ll wager…

You have nothing to worry about with YouTube – everything I see works to your favor!

I’ll post something on that tomorrow from a Statistician’s perspective.

    Illeist

Julius Caesar, the first and perhaps best-known illeist, in The Gallic War.

Joseph Stalin often referred to himself as “us”, “we”, or “Stalin”.

Comics character The Hulk is famous for referring to himself in the third person in well-known phrases such as “Hulk smash!”

Shaquille O’Neal refers to himself by his numerous nicknames.

Richard Nixon often referred to himself as “The President”.

Elmo from Sesame Street refers to himself in the third person. In response to the challenge that this will not teach children proper English usage, the Sesame Workshop states that this behavior “mimics the behavior of many preschoolers”.

All this in order to please our teacher, for she said “HotForWords will be viery happy if you get this right!”(no typo, that’s what she said :D )
Though it wasn’t hard, because it wasn’t even Wikipediaproof©, not to mention Googleproof®. :-)

Interesting race going on… Ashton Kucher vs. CNN on race to 1 million followers on Twitter… follow it in real-time here: http://chartbeat.com/cnnvsashton/ and watch live video if you want: http://www.ustream.tv/ashton

    • hs4mm says: 29.1

We are not impressed by such competitions.

      • Marina says: 29.1.1

I think it’s interesting to have a network (CNN) on TV live trying to get more followers than Ashton Kucher who is doing it from online only. And Ashton’s winning right now (by a 1,000). It’s interesting to see the real-time dynamic between the two numbers side by side.

        • He’s done it hasn’t he! Way to go Ashton :!:  one million gain, a Twitteraire extraordinaire acomplishment :!:

        • hs4mm says: 29.1.1.3

Marina, thou knowst, dontst thou, that 29.1 est example of nosism and this est example of tuism? And all this is very enallage (which does not mean causing an engorgement of certain body regions). Perhaps we should engage in some pluralis auctoris, pluralis modestiae or pluralis maiestatis? I just saw you released the answer … got to go there!

        • hs4mm says: 29.1.1.4

Finally got some hours to write this out:

I believe the race to the 1-M twitter followers was promoted as a race similar to events such as the race to be the first to the South Pole or the race for being the most widely used Operating System (OS; mainly Windows vs Linux).

But events such exploration and development (and promoting) an OS require much consideration of reality, thought and work spread across years. And in such cases, the “race” directly involves the efforts of the “competitors”.

A Twitterer gains followers based largely on prior work. In the early days of Hollywood, fans used to follow stars by way of publicity releases from studios that had the stars under contract; and in recent times, there have been gossip-magazines and fan-websites. Today, fans can follow their idols on Twitter. In the case of a business entity, it gains twitter followers based on what it has offered to its customers in the past.

A Twitterer’s gaining of followers is largely the establishment of a new mode of communication toward his existing base of followers.

So what does it take to reach 1M followers? It requires that Twitter publicize its values — that Twitter garner the attention of several millions of people. Then if a particular twitterer already has an established base of followers, it requires that he communicate the specific value that Twitter would afford them in their role as his fans.

Almost all of Kucher’s fans are likely to already be active on the internet because their pursuit of him is very greatly enhanced by being on the internet! People who watch CNN get what they want from CNN primarily via TV — and so are unlikely to be comfortable at a computer. The interest of Kucher’s fans require them to be on the internet already; the interest of CNN’s fans does not require them to be on the internet already. In fact, people who are on the internet might actually be those who do not watch CNN or any other TV. So it is easier for Kucher to establish this new Twitter connection toward his followers.

What was being promoted is not how Kucher became the actor that he is today or how CNN became the business that it is today — not the actions that lead to the creation of followers.

What was on display was each entity’s attempts to establish the new twitter-connection with their respective followers (and how these efforts were panning out in real time). And yes, it could be somewhat interesting to glance at what each was doing and how the respective outcomes were panning out.

What I would object to is the characterization of the 1M race as being similar to endeavors such as those mentioned earlier (South Pole, OS) — primarily because of the comparative range of time involved. I also do not agree with who people are saying has the advantage (”David/Goliath”) in the 1-M race: because of the respective prior presence of their followers on the internet, I think it is Kucher who is the “big guy with a head start” and CNN that is the “coming from behind little guy”.

          –Hs4Mm

      • We? You must be fishing for a response from aLx.

    • John says: 29.2

      Did you enjoy “The Boss”?

    • Chemikal says: 29.3

Also Britney Spears wants a million followers, and she’s really close to getting them too.
The idea of constant updates from the pop princess herself, will pretty much disintegrate most of the tabloid speculations of what she is doing right now.

Since she will be answering the Twitter question of “What are you doing?”, there won’t be any more reasons to bug her with that question any further. So for her it’s just a way to get some heat off her back, while getting monster publicity in return. I mean, 1 million followers… that’s got to count for something right? :-)

    • Chemikal says: 29.4

OH… I didn’t know that the competition was so ON between the two. Here’s a short video showing a [billboard] that says Follow ashton kutcher. I don’t even know what to say… what some people won’t do for publicity huh? :-)
