I wonder what’s the most attractive part of this lesson. The sound lady in the foreground or the sound knowledge in the background.

I guess some will go for the front, some will go for the back, some will try to run for both..

Hmm, you are right Marina, my video has had 100 views and it hasn’t been up for a day yet… It already had more views after 6 hours than most of my vids get in 3 days (my god my views aren’t that good are they?)

I think it was susan boyle… After checking the most popular list, I realized Lady GaGa was on there too, so really, I had killed 2 birds with one stone.

Will have to see how this works…

      So what?

      • hs4mm you win 250 points. But I won’t tell you which of the tweets I was thinking about. I’m going to leave it up for someone else to guess which one I was thinking about and why. My reply to James had a good clue.

        • You are a TA for Marina AND you got Pamela eating out of your hand? I’m gonna start calling myself Admiral or General. NO , Commodore. Commodore BeeVee14! Ladies!?

          • The uniform helps to get notice but it’s not my secret ingredient. You can’t judge a book by it’s cover. So what is inside is what really matters. Right?

It was Pamela that followed me first. I tweeted her and she tweeted back. I do what I normally do and helper her out with some things. Though I think it’s the general friendly tweets we exchange that wins friendship. She has stated that she will follow interesting and kind people that are a positive thinkers. She also has a different approach to using twitter than other celebrities have. She will actually will want to respond to as many tweets as she has time for and wishes to learn a bit about her twitter fans. Who are you? Tell me something about you? are types of questions she wants to say. Oh and she plans to kick Ashton’s ass on twitter!

People I follow and they don’t follow back I have NO RESPECT for them. There is no good excuse that I can find for anyone not to follow people back. When I see celebrities that have 100s of thousands of followers and they only follow like 20 or so, I view them as stuck up snobs that are so full of themselves their head should explode at any time.

I have a few twitter friend that I chat with from time to time. Like the Deputy Secretary at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Ron Sims. Which that person directly speaks to the president. That’s one degree of separation in personally communicating with Obama.

McHammer twitters me. He told me he was in the Navy. I found out he was an aviation store keeper. I told him I was a ships store keeper.

Most of all I have 100’s of not so famous but very interesting twitter follower that have enlighten me very much. I have learned very much from some of them. If I ever need anything I think there is someone on twitter that could help. I found 3 people that can help with some graphics designs. One of them has done much work already and even posted on her website work she has done for me. One lady is helping me to relocate to a new city. This works both ways. Just today I helped a TV newsman look for a mechanic to fix his Jeep.

So you get out of twitter what you put into it. Being real to the people who tweet.

Btw, I still hate twitter and don’t understand why it even exists, yet I could never give it up. It’s a very powerful tool………

You do not have sufficient permissions to access this page.

    • Marina says: 58.4

Captain Jack, about your comment that you have “no respect” for celebrities who don’t follow back everyone that follows them. I think you have a different perception of one of the main reasons why I think Twitter is so successful. The fact that you are not bombarded with the updates of everyone that follows you, and that you can focus on reading just the updates of certain people, and this allows for a much richer experience for all.

Let me explain. MySpace and Facebook were two environments where as you added more friends your emails and updates would grow exponentially as you would get updates from everyone who followed you. It got to the point where celebrities would pay people to keep up with their profiles as they would simply become a marketing vehicle and would lose any ability to become a communication device between the celebs and their friends. That’s why you rarely will EVER see major celebrities actually communicate with their friends on their MySpace page.

Twitter changed all that with one simple feature, and that was the ability to follow only the people you want while allowing the whole world to follow you. This is SO IMPORTANT as it allows celebs to actually use twitter.. to communicate with their ACTUAL friends, while letting the rest of the world look in and participate. I can GUARANTEE you that people like P Diddy, Ashton Kucher, etc.. with 600k followers and a million followers + WOULD NOT USE TWITTER ON A PERSONAL LEVEL AT ALL, if they were following an equal amount of people as who are following them. They would have no idea what their friends are up to as those tweets would be lost among all the tweets of the million other fans.

I follow certain people for different reasons. I follow other major YouTube partners so that I can learn about YouTube issues and help them with issues they may have. And then I follow certain celebrities to see how they use Twitter to promote themselves, and then I follow other celebs to watch them make fools of themselves.

But I noticed something. If an actual celebrity does not update his/her profile him/herself, I am not interested. That’s why I stopped following certain people as it was not them. Britney Spears and Mariah Carey are examples of this.

So it’s the asynchronous nature of Twitter that makes it useful for celebrities and others alike. Follow too many people and you will find yourself not using it on a personal level as much. Pam Anderson will not use Twitter to talk to her actual friends because she is following more people than who are following her. She will not be able to see what her friends are up to at a glance so Twitter will become a one-way promotional vehicle for her.

That’s why Ashton Kucher follows 84 people yet has 1.2 million followers… it’s because he USES Twitter himself to talk to his friends, he has actual conversations with people on Twitter.. even to people he doesn’t follow, as those tweets come to him in the form or replies! P. Diddy follows 120 people yet has 600k followers, because he uses Twitter himself to talk to his friends and to respond to replies as well. Britney Spears follows 300k people with a million followers and that’s why you never see her have a conversation with anyone. Twitter is a one-way vehicle for her and that’s why you see her managers making tweets for her.. she’s is just not really interested in it.

So if every celebrity followed back everyone who followed them, then they would stop using Twitter faster than you can say Twitter.

  24. You don’t have to do anything special to make a game where I can’t guess the word. I’ve failed on all of them, and this one was a [lulu] (or should that be capitalized?).

How about this for a sure-fire stumper: “I’m thinking of a word. What is it?”

  25. I would like to the origin of the word [notorious]

    .

    Hello Marina,

Essentially, GTW-17 requires one to identify a common feature among a set of things.

Things I like about the structure of this game:

        1) Activity of identifying a common feature among things (elaborated upon below).

        2) The number of items: it was not just 3 or 4 but 6 (Caesar, Stalin, Hulk, Shaq, Nixon, and Elmo).

        3) The nature of the items: the items were not contrived but from daily life.

        4) The variety of the items: the items were so varied that features that were common to many were not common to all: male (elmo is of indeterminate sex), politician, leader, dead, making a speech, speaking, real person, celebrity, true depictions (the only quotes I could find for Nixon saying he wasn’t a crook were non- illeisms).

        5) Examples were enacted (rather than clips from original sources).

        6) The clue: This game does have a clue, viz., “HotForWords will be very happy if you get this right.” (elaborated upon below).

    Elaboration on 1):

Thinking involves identifying characteristics of the things one is considering and observing similarities and differences among the things. And the hard and crucial part of thinking is the identification of similarities among seemingly dissimilar things. And GTW-17 concerns this task — and so it requires one to exercise an important skill.

To concertize this task in “real life”, suppose a person knows nothing about basketball and is watching a basketball game for the very first time. I assume the person knows about other games and so understands the concept of a game played by a group of people. At first, all he notices is a group of people at one end of the court and the ball being tossed around with some people attempting to get the ball to go into the bucket; soon there after, he seeing that the bunch of people have moved to the other end of the court and a similar struggle ensures but with the opposite team attempting to get the ball into the bucket. So his purpose of understanding what the game entails eventually leads him to grasps that getting the ball from one end to the other is important. He might then decide to observe how the ball gets from one end to the other. So he observes several possessions with this new purpose in mind. In time, he might grasp the concepts of getting the ball up the court by a combination of dribbing and passing.

To recap: wanting to know what the game entails, he notes the need to get the ball from one court to the other; wanting to know how the ball gets from one court to the other, he observes several instances of bringing the ball up the court and notes the concepts of dribbling and passing.

If he then wonders why sometimes the ball does not end up having been moved from one court to the other, he might more closely observe instances of such failures. He would notice that there is more than one way for a ball to be “turned over” — and so he would, after much study, sub-categorize the various ways a ball can be turned over: forced or unforced, 10-second violation, back court violation, stolen dribble, stolen pass, erratic ball handling resulting in ball going out of bounds, offensive foul etc.

The key point to note is that: in thinking, one has a reason for considering the things one is considering — a purpose guides our thoughts, and it is the purpose that helps identify the similarities among the seemingly dissimilar things.

So what is the purpose for which we need to observe the six examples in GTW-17? As per the statement of GTW-17, the purpose is to identify a common characteristics among the six people. But this is not the precise purpose; the precise purpose is to identify a common characteristics in the mode of expression of the six people. Note that if the purpose was stated precisely, then it would be very easy to say that the speakers are referring to themselves in the third person. So to make GTW-17 a challenge, the purpose must be stated loosely. (In the basketball example, knowing the purpose did not make it easy to know the similarities, but, in this game set-up, it does.)

So the puzzle requires the participant to think with a loosely stated purpose. I consider this a weakness in the structure of the puzzle. However, a virtue of the puzzle is that it provides a clue to overcome this weakness.

    Elaboration on 6)

Before GTW-17, the only statements by Marina that one could consider illeist were along the lines of “HotForWords must investigate!” and “Another mystery solved by your trusty HotForWords.” But these are more like catch-phrases or business slogans; these are statements of HotForWords the business entity, they are not really personal statements by Marina. However, in GTW-17, the statement “HotForWords will be very happy if you get this right.” is a personal statement from Marina — it is a statement designed to motivate students by means of their desire to please their teacher. Note that this statement is not presented as an example. Since this is the first instance of Marina being truly illeistic, an astute student would note that there is something odd about how Marina formulated that statement. The job of identifying the oddness in that statement is much easier to solve than the task of identifying a common attribute among the six people for no apparent purpose. Once the student solves that job as “Marina referred to herself as HotForWords” he is more likely note that the other six people also referred to themselves in an odd manner. In time, he will be able to state that the six people (and Marina) referred to themselves in the third person. Note how the clue has helped overcome the short-coming of a vague purpose!

The second weakness in GTW-17 is the need for the student to then come up with a word that describes people referring to themselves in the third person!

GTW-17 overcomes the second weakness by two ways: The first way is that Marina actually mentioned the word illeism about 3 days before GTW-17! So if a student was paying attention in class and was diligent, the word illeism would be fresh in his mind. (By the way, this is how I figured out the answer!) The second way is that the internet has reverse dictionaries that one could use (click to see). (By the way, I discovered the reverse dictionary by exploring a remark I read in a comment at this HFW site!)

    Postscript: The importance of definiteness:

If one asks people who like their work what motivated them to choose it in the first place, one of the attributes they are likely to mention is the definiteness in their professions (remember I am referring to the thoughts these people had when they were little kids deciding on what they wanted to do in life): a historian might say “facts are facts, one can fake what has happened!”, a basketball player might say “either you score more buckets than your opponent of you do not — the game is very clear-cut!”, a mathematician or accountant might say “numbers don’t like — 2 and 2 make 4!”, a doctor might say “either one is healthy or sick!”, a policeman might say “laws are well defined – one either abides by them or breaks them!”, a computer scientist might say “a processor does what it is programmed to do literally — it does not do what the programmer merely felt he wanted the processor to do!” etc. In creating a GTW games, it is important to ensure that the participant knows precisely what he should be looking for, and to ensure that he is able to tell with certainty whether or not he has found the solution. These attributes add to the motivation to solve the game and to the enjoyment one gets from attempting to solve the game.

In GTW-17, the purpose is vague, but the vagueness is overcome by the clue. The clue is only usable by, perhaps even only observable by, the astute student. The second shortcoming of coming up with the word that means the common feature is peculiar to GTW-17, and GTW-17 has the two ways mentioned above of overcoming this shortcoming.

Oops! Intended to mention the following, but forgot to do so: People have attempted to test thinking ability by creating questions that present four or five objects, such as small drawings or numbers, and requiring the participant to identify the object that does not belong or to pick the next object in the sequence from an additional set of four or so objects. I consider such tests rubbish for two reasons: the objects are too contrived, and there is no purpose for which one need study the objects provided.

i second that*****Mambo Italiano: Sophia LorenSophia came from her native Italy to America and became one of the world’s greatest sex symbols. With exotic curves that made Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield look shapeless( joke), Loren relit the Italian passion that Rudolph Valentino made famous back in the 1920’s. After starring in many hit films, Loren struck Oscar gold for her role in the Italian film ‘Two Women’. Directed by Carlo Ponti, whom she married after many relationships with other cinema greats Cary Grant and Gregory Peck. Even today, Loren looks stunning and is still named in ‘the most beautiful women in the world’ lists. Everybody fell in love with Loren’s European sex appeal and warmth that she so wonderfully oozed onscreen. A screen legend, Sophia Loren will forever be remembered for her fantastic performances, striking beauty and curves. All of which, was natural.

    I love the twitpic Marina!

But one more thing…. Why are you listing your videos under comedy now? 10,000 views and you are already #17 on the most viewed global list!

What made you take them out of entertainment?

    • Marina says: 47.1

James.. I am trying a multitude of things to see if they effect my existing on the popular pages. It seems like I make it to popular quicker if I am under commedy, but I may be wrong altogether.

      • James says: 47.1.1

My video seems to have done really well compared to normally… I think its because of the title…

      • James says: 47.1.2

What do you think of this Marina?

I think YouTube should change the way the “Global” honour works. As I am in the UK it’s not too hard to get an honour on my channel, but if I was in the US it would be so much harder because I am competing with the rest of the world. Global means the world, not America, America is not the whole world. There should be a seperate category for America, just like all the other countries & global should mean global.

      • Marina, as far as I can tell, not having done the rigorous tests – yet, the Comedy category is an advantage.

James, I was the first one to break the news on the Forum to Marina a month ago that the Comedy category broke the mold.

How did I know she switched to Comedy? Cause her stats that I am monitoring broke out of the mold, and after examining the various variables, I discovered the switch.

But, keep in mind, no variable works in a vacuum. Everything is relative to everything else. If you had everything perfect, except that the video was just a black screen, then none of that perfection would matter. Remember to keep these variables in relative context to the other variables.

Isn’t it ironic that Ahmidinajad :?: is all for the appeal of Spygirl at the same time that Israel has’em locked and cocked and sitting on the runway. First trial lasted 15 minutes, I bet the appeal lasts longer. It is said that he will keep the jury sequestered until he stops seeing Star of David wingtips and immolated enrichment plants in his nightmares!

    • beevee14 says: 41.1

I realize I should have put this in the forum, but nobody goes there an…HEY! Now wait just a gosh-darned, ding-dang minute! Are you guys trying to tell me something?

    • Actually, that is quite an astute observation.
Certainly more observant than the official response reporting our government is “disappointed” in the outcome. If this goes on until 2012, perhaps another failed helicoptor rescue is being planned, eh?
One impotent response breeds just more of the same, and emboldens the enemy.

      • James says: 41.2.1

Why is everything happening in 2012?? is 2011 just written off? or is 2012 going to full of polotics

        • 2012 is the next election cycle, when the next President will be elected. Jimmy Carter failed to act upon the Iran hostage situation during his administration, until the last moments (literally) of his Presidency, when a failed rescue attempt using helicoptors was staged, resulting in a loss of both special force teams and the helicptors involved.
The hostages were released within moments of the inauguration of Ron Reagan, who had vowed to get our hostages back as his first priority, using the full might of the US military, if necessary. Iran knew Reagan wasn’t going to play their game, so they capitulated rather than end up beinbg destroyed.
Obama is now set up in the same position as Carter, and is shown not to be up to the task of freeing the American reporter being held by Iran. It may likely not be resolved until the next President-elect vows to take the action necessary to free this girl. Thus, this singular event could end up being an issue until 2012, if history is repeated. I forgot, you weren’t even born when the last Iran hostage situation occurred. If you care to learn more about this, search keyword CARTER IRAN HOSTAGE and follow up by searching IRAN CONTRA AFFAIR and G. GORDON LIDDY. You may find it interesting, now that Iran is agitating things, again.

          • FYI @ Cha–Cha

The ayotollah khomeni, who set the match to things in ‘79, thought that the party that Ahmindinajad belongs to now where so radical that he had them all killed but a few slipped thru the cracks. With that in mind, Good Luck with your ‘dialog’, Mr. President!

Interesting scenario: Israel decides to attack Iran. We dont give them the IFF transponder codes and shoot down an Israeli. He better be running for that Bat-Cave!

Ha, Marina!!! You would have been screwed for a title if she said ” Susan Boyle will sing…”

    Lol

I have also jumped on the susan boyle bandwagon and see what happens there… She was amazing

  49. nighteye says: 31

I would’ve expected Marina to have gotten used to pronouncing odd words by now…maybe we can request some tongue-twisting words to give her some more practice? ;)

  50. darmontis says: 30

A couple of words that would like to request. [generation g] and [g-goer]

g-goer is a term for being a member of generation g.

  51. James says: 29

I don’t know why you are having trouble with this Marina. I already can think of 2 EXTREMELY hard words.

  52. Che Volay says: 28

WAKE UP! MARINA, JA! JA! JA!

    {Gorby momentarily licking M's face, saying "feed me"}

Anybody else notice that three fingers of Jim Beam just don’t last like it used to.

  54. LOL. I just ADORE you, Marina. Your website too. Great word. Good to know. Change nothing.

Also, just caught up on all the YouTube/Hulu business drama. I’m interested as I am also an entrepreneur and I don’t fully understand what the challenge may be for you? I am assuming that your primary interest is exposure at this point, the more people that sign up on your website the more valuable your business is to investors/sponsors, right? Is it possible to be on YouTube and Hulu at the same time (the more exposure the better, right?). What exactly is your concern other than people going to YouTube and somehow coming across your website? By the way, I saw you on TV and went straight to your website, and never peruse the YouTube main page. Maybe that’s why I don’t fully understand your concerns with the changes?

Hey hey hey Marina, you look SOOOOOO nice in this video

“When I said hotforwords, must investigate”

Oh, how I miss that…. AND WHERE HAS THE SPINNING GLOBE GONE?!

    • Marina says: 23.1

Supposedly YouTube doesn’t count views when people bail prior to 50% and people used to bail during those transitions.

YouTube supposedly put this in place (if it’s true, as I am not totally sure if it is) to combat spammer (people hitting reload a billion times). And the result is that producers like myself have to lose our intros and transitions.

      • James says: 23.1.1

Perhaps you should make a video, with the title and transitions, and then make a copy with out upload the one with the transitions, and then see how it does. If it flops upload the one without and then see how long that goes. Measure the views over say…. 2 days.. Then work out for yourself which will do better.

      • James says: 23.1.2

That didn’t make much sense did it?

        REWRITE

Perhaps you should make a video, with the title and transitions, and then make a copy with out the title and transitions. upload the one with the transitions first, and then see how it does. If it flops upload the one without the transitions and then see how that goes. Measure the views over say…. 2 days.. Then work out for yourself which type will do better in the future.

      • Is popularity or counter-bumping the only things that matter in the whole wide world? If someone is going to quite a vid for such a picayune thing, they aren’t really a viewer, are they? I find it sad that you have to wring every last number out things. Just produce the best product you can and let the chips fall where they may. If you don’t get enough money, I can mail you a corndog from time to time.

  58. [Lotta] hello Marina ,,kinda wondering about this word ,,I know what it means to me *smiles

  61. MCLIJazz says: 18

I’ve been an illeist at times in the past. Sometimes, when on the air, I would refer to myself as “yours truly, [name].”
Your Richard Nixon impression needs work, but it was good nonetheless.

  62. thegorn says: 17

When you stop putting THE WORD out of the “script”…

  63. Nathan says: 16

So then, are you not doing winners of the game anymore, Marina?

    • This one was done [on the fly], pretty much.
Keep your eyes open for future games, where
      prizes will be awarded.
Marina thought we were getting the answers too easy
and wanted to try something different.
What did you think? Was it harder to Guess the Word?

  64. Queen Victoria was noted as
    saying “We are not amused”
Some believed the context was meant to
convey “we” (the ladies of the court),
but she is also noted for having said
    “We have become a grandmother”.
I guess that, settles that!
    .
Homework: I have only addressed myself as “we” on
rare occasions, hopefully, when aLex doesn’t mind – LOL!
    .
Rate this video 5 stars at YouTube, guys! Thanks…

  65. Che Volay says: 14

Marina you know Che speaks in the third person all the time.

    {Che now thinks he was the inspiration for this word}

  66. seesixcm6 says: 13

    Dear Marina,
Thank you for the answer to GTW XVII. Since the next two games might be soon, 18 is XVIII, and 19 is shown as XIX. The I in front of the X reduces that number to 9.
    20 = XX
    21 = XXI
    22 = XXII
    23 = XXIII
    24 = XXIV
I’m not posting this to detract from your genius. It’s just to be proactive and improve quality.

I’m glad you did not pick”winners” from this site or from YouTube. I realize I’d never win because you must spread your attention to so many thousands of subscribers. It woudn’t be nice to show excessive favoritism to me.

Marina, I know Susan Boyle is “popular” at the moment but couldn’t you think of a better title for YouTube? Maybe “It’s not a me thing?”
