I’ve read the article now, and I do hope your parents get to visit you in L.A. this summer. Other than the massive amounts of stress it would cause you, in cleaning alone, it would be a lot of fun for them to see your world. You may be able to ease their language fears by telling them that American airport signs have pictures telling them which way to go. I’ve read that the ones in Moscow are not so friendly.

I think it would be interesting for them, who grew up in Soviet times, to see [decadent] America.

Does you family subscribe to this publication?
I’d like to see a pic of this article stuck to their fridge door with magnets. That’d be cool.

  10. Marina, congratulations on being on the cover of the Moscow News Newspaper. That was a funny and interesting article to read.

Have you noticed how all of the journalists around the world who write about Marina, tend to chose some interesting words to characterize her as if there were some conspiracy to hijack the most titillating words to sell their media. Fascinating.

Of course I don’t agree with any of those characterizations, as Marina does what she does best, and that is — she is being herself, which is the most endearing part about her.

    I think one of the words that comes to mind that characterizes Marina the best, is the word [evocative]. The definition that I like for the word evoke that seems to apply the best, is;

“to produce or suggest through artistry
and imagination a vivid impression of reality”

As Marina once said on the O’Reilly show, it’s magic.

Thats good Marina…. But I’m not sure about this

Watching the videos reminds one both of high-class escort service ads

 :D ISCLAIMER: Does not include James

    And secondly…

The videos manage to have a casual and amateurish feel to them, as if she just came home and turned on her webcam, even though they are clearly the work of professionals.

They don’t feel amateur at all…

Look at my vids… They are amazing, because you taught me how to do them…

What I’m looking forward to, is seeing you on the front page of The Times in the UK.
    Can’t be long.

  13. Marina,

I’m running out of ways to say congratulations. Your accolades are just coming in too fast!
Great article. I’m so proud for you!

    Always.

  14. “…generally teases her audience.”

    Ya think?

  15. Jeorney says: 12

“Words are older than we are,” she said, “and how we came to use them says a lot about our history.”

That’s intriguing Marina. How far back in Human evolutionary development are we going? Is there any chance of you expanding on this little gem of information? I’d be interested to know. I have my own thoughts on the subject, but since you studied linguistics, I’d like to understand your view on the matter.

    .

    Marina,

Considering just the recent facts: Development of your ability with new technical techniques (e.g., blue-screening), with new presentational techniques (e.g., character based lessons); development of your business with new revenue streams (e.g., neuro-drink, jump-radio) and with the discovery of new audiences (e.g., the horse-racing crowd); hitting of milestones (e.g., 200K subscribers); getting exposure (e.g., neuro, jump, Moscow News).

    So:

For You: Lots of things for you to celebrate as you continue your self-initiated and self-directed growth.

For Me: Lots of things for you to be congratulated upon — and I am the one who can do so: Congratulations, Marina — again and again and again and again … .

    Now, as you say,

    Lots of love and knowledge,

    –Hs4Mm

    Marina,

Is there any conection with a HotForWords interview and an article on Cold showers are good for you?

  18. wetsuit5 says: 9

    OK This is great.

    BUT!!!

The big party is in Moscow next week.
    Who is your favorite??

  19. bobsully says: 8

    Поздравляю!

  20. hs4mm says: 7

    Oh Man! I read this:

A self-confessed philologist (no, that is not something she does in bed, it means someone who studies linguistics and etymology), Orlova …

and all my dreams are shattered! I thought the word philologist had a common root with the word pencil — after all, both start with p and have an i and an l — what more does one need to establish a common root?! And now I find out that those etymologists are saying it ain’t so! Bummer! Etymologists have absolutely no right to break-up the roots of words like that — especially when the commonness is so clearly evident! Oh! the injustice of it all!

Is there something we are suppose to listen to?

“The videos manage to have a casual and amateurish feel to them, as if she just came home and turned on her webcam, even though they are clearly the work of professionals.”

    PRICELESS!
I love how they don’t even expect so much talent from one person.
They still don’t know Marina yet, do they? :-)

  23. leonard says: 4

 Good WORK  …I sure would love to visit

    …MOSCOW…

    ***!***peace and love

    • Chemikal says: 4.1

I hope you do, in fact… if you wish this to happen, it will.
Da, you better believe it. ;)

Funny how Marina’s parents didn’t learn English yet. I mean after watching so many educational videos, I’d guess some, if not all of it, would stick.
Also, if she starts teaching in Russian, then I’m learning Russian. :-)

It doesn’t hurt to learn another language!

      • Hi Chemikal,

Loved your vid. Reminds me of a WWII story of street fighting in Warszawa, in which a Polish partisan ran into a house and suddenly found himself facing a roomful of German soldiers. “I’m looking for Polish partisans!” he yelled in German, then turned and ran out before the Germans could collect their wits and shoot him.

As far as Marina’s parents learning English…I wonder what they would think of some of M’s videos if they could understand them. When I forget how young I feel and remember my age, sometimes I look at her through a father’s eyes and am unsettled by what I see. But maybe Russians have a different perspective. :???:

        • Hi Evan,

Good looking gravatar you have, it has the colors of my favorite soccer team. You Rock! :-)

“I wonder what they would think of some of M’s videos if they could understand them.”
I’m just a little worried about what they think now, not understanding the words.

Thank God they can’t read the YouTube comments. Sheesh, the inane, stupid, braindead things some people say there would be enough to drive any parent out of their mind.

Through your analogy, by looking at her through a parent’s eyes, what exactly is unsettling? I don’t find anything inappropriate in her act of teasing her audience. But since I’m pretty close to Russia myself, maybe I’m thinking too Russian? :-)
I don’t know… tell me if you like.

  24. Chemikal says: 3

    Jump ist sexy!
Don’t need two brains to figure what that means. :-)
    Very nice project…

  25. Chemikal says: 2

“coming back to Russia to teach English at a university here.

However, her life went in a different direction in 2007, when she launched her own YouTube channel. ”

Imagine if she did go back and teach class. How would you react if you found out that your teacher had a blog, a YouTube channel, and hundreds of sexy videos?

In my view, that gives a whole new meaning to “Stay in school!”
I’d stay in her class until 60…ish. :D

  26. Chemikal says: 1

    Cool…
It always seems like the best interviews are done from a student’s point of view. And this idea is not so far fetched actually… a reporter is supposed to be someone in touch with language and grammar, so the excellent candidate for a hotforwords subscriber! :-)
