In a conversation with a friend the other day, she wondered about the derivation of the word [fresh]. For example, “Don’t get ‘fresh’ with me!”. Seems to be that being fresh would be a good thing. You wouldn’t want someone being ’stale’ with you, would you?

  6. Marina, please could you explain the meaning, origin and strange spelling of the word [paradigm]?

  15. Hey pretty lady! I got a word request for ya!! {radar} What is the origin of the word?? I would assume it is named for the inventor of the device? Could you help me out?

    • Ooooh, an electronics question. That’s right up my [alley].

RADAR stands for Radio Detection And Ranging. For some reason it is now a word and not just an acronym (how does that happen, anyway?), and so it has lost the need to be in all caps, just like laser has.

Radar has been around since the early 1900s when it was crude, indeed. It used relatively long radio waves and so did not have the ability to distinguish small targets like fighter planes from larger ones. In WWII, the British overcame the problem of building a very tiny vacuum tube that would make very high frequencies; instead of trying build a tube with parts so close together that they couldn’t withstand vibration (like in an airplane), they came up with an ingenius new device, the magnetron. It had a round center with cavities around it. Electrons were sent whirling around in the center (constrained in its circular path by the magnet, hence the name). As electrons passed each cavity, they set the cavity ringing exactly like blowing across the top of a bottle, except it made radio waves instead of sound waves. The whole thing was machined from a block of metal, so unlike a tube, it was bulletproof and could be used anywhere. The microwaves it generated allowed the detection of small targets like submarine periscopes on the ocean.

Hand-carrying a model of the top-secret tube to the U.S. so that Western Electric could build them in mass production, a British agent getting off the train looked away for a moment and found that his luggage and the box with the magnetron was being toted down the platform by a helpful porter. (He got it back after a footchase.)

Today, instead of an antenna, magetron microwaves are directed into a box wherein your TV dinner lies. A microwave oven is nothing more than a magnetron and food cavity into which the waves flow. Everything else is just support circuitry (timers, interlocks, power supply, etc.). The waves jiggle the food molecules and heat it from within.

The Nazis knew of England’s radar and decided to destroy it. They sent a fleet of bombers to pulverize one site (and did). The Brits had a complete set of replacement equipment nearby just in case and so replaced it in a day. When the Nazis learned it was operating as nothing had happened, they came to the conclusion that radar could not be destroyed by bombing and never tried it again. Imagine that.

      • i say thanks…

(CampKohler – Sacramento CA .)….keep up the good work, said leonard.

    Hey Marina,
Have a word for ya. My friend has a little problem sleeping and she says that she always feels like someone is in the room with her at night, and sees shadows of things that aren’t there. I believe there is a word for that, insomnia, and then it gets me thinking where that word came from. So, i would please like to know the word [insomnia] and its origins. Thanks cutie!

  19. Hi Marina…
The other day I was thinking about the word evening. Why is it that we call the period between the afternoon and night the evening? It seems like an odd word for this time of day since there isn’t really a sense of even – ing that happens during the evening… Can you please tell me how we came to call the evening, the [evening]….

Sudden questionable phone calls from those I was suppose to be with an hour ago, oops! I think it’s a case of making something ’stick’ so I can’t forget when busy. Years a go, I recall a work colleague kissed me as to remind not to forget Fridays meeting!! I can still recall the combination to my locker at work from 3 years ago. My wiring is just screwy … :???:

Marina will be writing a post regarding her book pre-ordering soon, but I just can’t wait anymore, so I’m asking you Karl…
I never ordered off of Amazon before.
Do they ship it to Romania?
This will suck forever if I won’t be able to get my order in.
I hope they don’t charge twice as much for delivery than the cost of the book itself.

      •
        Hi Chemikal,
Check out Amazon’s Shipping & Delivery page.

On that page they tell you to proceed as if you were going to order and then you will be able to play with the shipping options to see what the cost will be. If you don’t like any options, you can cancel the process.

You can also view the shipping tables for Europe by clicking here.

Presuming I am reading the table correctly, it looks like it is only $4 per item shipping and 15-26 business days for delivery time to Romania.

        • A friend of mine sent me 2 CDs in one package, from Atlanta, Georgia. Postage was worth $7.
Maybe Amazon has it’s own deals with the airline couriers?
I’m relieved anyway, and I’d like to thank you for investigating for me.
I see Super Saver Shipping (free shipping for +$25 worth of items) is only available in the U.S. so that’s scratched out from the get go. :-)

I don’t know how useful this Send To Twitter thing is as it doesn’t automatically preface the tweet with @hotforwords hmmm…

    •
I would think that would be an easy hack to implement.

I was wondering about the 140 characters as there is no down counter as there is when using Twitter.

Or, how about a return link to this page when someone sees the tweet, they click and see the originating comment.

      • Marina says: 79.1.1

I’m over it. Looking for another solution.

        •
OK, that’s kewl. It was fun while it lasted.

        • hs4mm says: 79.1.1.2

          Curious, this really puzzles me:

Since you are looking for another solution, it means that you really would like to integrate twitter with HFW comments, with the tweets automatically going to (or easily set to go to) HotForWords; and perhaps you have some other features in mind (e.g., link back longer comments to HFW page).

If I were in such a situation, and I were not able to redo the plugin (my guess is I would be able to redo the plugin, but suppose I could not) then the first thing I would do would be to contact the author and request the feature. It would not surprise me if the author has a web-site in which he invites feedback. Here’s what puzzles me: such is not your first response; your first response is to look for another solution.

Also, what does “another solution” mean? When you found this plugin, did you not already do a search for all possible plugins that integrated WordPress comments and twitter, and pick this one?

Do you see it as wrong to request a feature? Do you see the request for a feature as amounting to a complaint or an insult to or an imposition on the author of the plugin? Or do you see the request for a feature as “begging” or otherwise demeaning?

    • hs4mm says: 79.2

Congratulations on the integration. I had a different thought about the “next step”/”feature enhancement” for the developer: For long comments and for comments that have a link to an image (e.g., link to a jpg file), start the tweet with a link to the comment on the HFW site. (This would be somewhat similar to how replies form tweetpic are started with a link to the image.)

(I believe there already are tweeter apps that accept tweet-messages longer than 140 chars, and send a tweet with a truncated version of the message but with a link to the full message — I remember seeing one such truncated tweet.)

    Word Request:[Disestablishmentarianism]. Oh yeah, if I had amnesia there’s a really good possibility that I don’t remember it,Whatta Ya think :?: :!:

    •
      Hello Venomrock67,
Marina did an awesome lesson on Antidisestablishmentarianism in which she discusses the word disestablishment. This is a very popular lesson having 7,345,141 YouTube views at this moment.

When you search the word Antidisestablishmentarianism on Google, you’ll see that the 3rd search result is Marina’s lesson. How cool is that?

      Check it out
      Antidisestablishmentarianism
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fv2_rSCnBQQ

      • one of my all-time favorite HFW words

      • Wow that’s pretty cool, I didn’t think to look under the A’s on the “request a word” listings page for one of the forms of the word disestablishment but she did cover it all in that lesson. I am for the seperation of Church and State so that’s why I went with Disestablishmentarianism.

You know in my opinion I like Marina’s three minute video lessons better, but I read a comment from Captain Jack somewhere where he and someone else were talking about “Youtube” and the general public having very, very short attention spans and maybe time is a factor too. I’d like to see her do more of those three minute lessons, but that’s just my suggestion, you know.

Oh, and just to let you know remember “Johhny got his gun”? the book is way better. The movie does tries very hard to capture the essence of the story. You’re right and I have to change my recommendation and recommend the book over the movie. I had to wait a few months though before finally receiving my hardcover edition of this title, for some reason it’s hard to get. I could’nt put the book down and read it in one session :!: Thanks
        Have a good one PedantiKarl

        •
          Hey thanks Venomrock67,
I’m glad that you liked the book and it is very riveting.

Yes, I liked the older HotForWords 3 minute videos also. I keep reviewing the older ones as they are classics.

One of the other issues is that with the HD versions of the lessons, the file length are so much larger and it can take an hour to upload and process. The file sizes used to be around 8 MB in size. The current lessons are around 25 MB. Longer lessons would mean file sizes over 50 MB in size.

          Take care

…and speaking of amnesia, I want to review an audiobook I recently downloaded and listened to, “The Bourne Identity” by Robert Ludlum. The movie followed the book loosely, but still the film was better than the book. The book immediately hooks you in with an interesting and complex plot development in the first few chapters. Then it goes downhill with the introduction of the female charactor, who is nothing like the charactor played by my personal heart throb, Franka Potente, except they are both the love interest (film vs book) of Jason Bourne. So, skip the book. There are other books to read.

  65. HW: Due to a number of concussions (that sounds funny, but it isn’t) I have trouble pulling up names of people I haven’t seen for awhile. I thought Amnesia was an Amway perfume for eminently forgettable people.

    • Che Volay says: 51.1

Here in the US Bob, short term amnesia is know as having a ’senior moment’

    • Chemikal says: 51.2

      Hey Bob,

Is that eminently or imminently forgettable?
By the way, I use to be an Amway distributor once, a long time ago. Not that you’ve asked or anything… I just like filling people’s heads with stuff that they will never be able to use. :D
I could test out the “opposites attract” theory on Marina. She never tells us things we can’t later use in conversation. I’ll keep you posted if I encounter any progress! :-)

  77. Chemikal says: 50

    Buhahaha! :D
Since both Words sisters have suffered amnesia at some point, how can they tell each other apart?
I mean, we might be watching Marina’s sister and not even knowing it

    • Evan Owen says: 50.1

      Hi Chemikal,

Since I haven’t bugged you lately, I need to ask you about this:

English is so much more fun than any other language I know! ^^

So what languages do you know besides English and Romanian? And how did Gorby’s kiss from M. inspire this remark?

      • Hi Evan,

I fiddled with French and Latin in school, and afterwords I tried learning Chinese. It went well until I started university, when I found all my extra time lost and spent towards school matters.

I like foreign languages, so after I finish up on my degree, I’ll probably get back to studying tongues!

Now about the remark, I could be wrong though… I only said that because English is the language I’m most familiar with(native one aside). So I guess since I’ve discovered wordplays, I’m having more fun with it.

Take the word bitch for example, it’s most common meaning, and it’s original meaning… When you can use both meanings of a word in a single phrase or sentance, without having to repeat it, you get a feeling of overcoming a time gap(or something of the sort). Or maybe I’m just overly enthusiastic about certain things sometimes, I don’t know.

The main idea was that I wanted to share the fact that I had fun on that particular construction, and a generalization then followed. :D

I hope that by trying to explain I didn’t cloud you further.
Anyway, just note that I consider English to be a fun language due to it’s original metamorphosis of some words and phrases, and not to mention their cleaver joining, that leaves your mouth open! :-)

        • Just to be clearer, I meant:

“leaves your mouth open” – in astonishment

        • Thanks, Chemikal, most enlightening. Although your “doble-entendre” with “bitch” was a little hard to get, with Gorby’s being a male dog.

          M. makes many of us feel “a bit itchy,” to take the wordplay a bit futher!

French and Latin…did you notice the similarities to Romanian? :?:

          • The similarities helped me learn at first, but at some point I was trying to overly adapt words, and I was saying things like FORKulition or FRENCHeze. :D

I got over that quickly, but mind your similarities, otherwise they bite you in the but. :-)

About the Gorby line, what did you first understand?
I did the classic role playing bit, where I was being Gorby, and said: “The Gorbinator’s back b1tches! auauauuu” addressed to all the female dogs on the web.
            I hope I wasn’t misunderstood! LOL

        • “The Gorbinator’s back b1tches! auauauuu” addressed to all the female dogs on the web.

OK, NOW I get it! Forgive me, I’m terribly dense at times!

Is that an early model neurogasm bottle(clear bottle, light blue top) that J is holding at the beginning!?
:?: :!: Great Marketing Concept: Have a reference to Neurogasm in every video. A bottle, a magazine with it in there, a reference in a line; anything! The addicts in the crowd(of which I am a member in good standing…ok,FAIR standing) will go bananas trying to find it AND be the first one to tell the world right here! I got this from Seinfeld. EVERY show had some reference to Superman and I still find myself looking. I guess it would be difficult with green screen but it was just an idea. La Raza” means “the race”… and is a group that also has connections to organizations that advocate the separation of several southwestern states from the rest of America! In fact, in 2006, the late Rep. Charlie Norwood urged La Raza to renounce its support of the Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan — which sees “the Race” as part of an ethnic group that one day will reclaim Aztlan, the mythical birthplace of the Aztecs (in Chicano folklore, Aztlan includes California, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico and parts of Colorado and Texas).

Keep the buzz goin, thats what a bee does!

      • WOW,L, you got me here! I had to go back and read my post sevaral times to make sure I didn’t say anything about race! I didn’t but I am familiar with La Raza. In fact, the USAs newest Supreme Court nominee is a member! That is grand, oops, grande! Like Artie Shaw(laugh-In) said,”Ve-e-e-ry interesting!”

BTW, Speaking of race; heres a story:
The lady behind us has had to go and watch a family member who isn’t doing to well. It didn’t take long for the dog to migrate up here and we knew she had a cat. So last night we were out by the fire making SMORES and here comes this black & white cat. We’ve already got 3 cats and 2 dogs so I’m thinking,”Hell,NO!” It went to my daughter, she fed it, and it was downhill from there! It was my turn to name the newest animal so I said,”We’ll call it RH, for ‘racial harmony’.” My daughter rolled her eyes and I said,’well, it IS black and white!” We’ve since bastardized it to Archie.

now my daughter wants to call it Wiggles and she is threatening legal action. I hope it isn’t go before the Supreme Court…

In fact, the USAs newest Supreme Court nominee is a member! Of La Raza.
Just wanted to put that down there again in case you were wrapped up in my kitty story. Serious Business

  81. Hey Marina! What about the phrase [I'm not a happy camper]! I hear people use it all the time and I have no clue where it came from. Cya =)

  82. ihearbs says: 45

That was a great hit Marina!

  83. errin says: 44

Always entertaining when Marina and her sister interact! Nice special effects! I wonder why James requested amnesia. I’d ask him, but he’s probably forgotten by now.

I must say, it is quite a small world. James Blunt’s big hit was produced by a good friend of mine by the name of Tom Rothrock (who also helped Beck and Elliot Smith get their start). James also toured a little with my friend Nerina Pallot too, I believe. From what I’ve heard, everybody who meets him says he’s a super nice guy. Interestingly enough, I’ve been waiting for Mr. Rothrock to get less busy recently so that I can have a musical meeting with him and he can hear my lo fi album. Maybe I’ll even meet James some day at this rate.

Speaking of small worlds, it really tripped me out the other day when I checked out Marina’s twitpics and she had a pic of a receipt from shopping at a Trader Joe’s that is right by where my ’special lady’ works (she’s an RN when she’s not modeling; Is doing a runway show right now as I type this!). I shop at that Trader Joe’s on occasion with her… maybe we’ll bump into Marina one of these days! And Gorby too!!

Last but not least, I had a great day today because my number one drummer of choice for who to work with on my own music ended up hearing my stuff and liked it enough to want to be part of it. He’s the perfect drummer for my sound, and a cool guy too. For those into music, his name is Jim Laspesa. Used to drum for a power punk band called The Muffs, and recently got off tour with Dave Davies. I’m ecstatic that he’s willing to work with me. Almost as exciting as discovering Marina likes my music a lot! I hope I never get amnesia, because then I might forget cool moments like this. lol

Thanks for the fun lesson, Marina! I enjoyed it thoroughly… you are truly unforgettable, my dear! Peace and love, Errin : )

The Orlova sisters are very beautiful, but one is more beautiful than the other. (I’m not telling which one.) There was a short lived comedy TV show in the ’80’s that had identical twins, and one of the gags was for one blonde to turn to the other and accuse her of being a clone. Then the other would accuse her of being the clone. Anybody remember that show?

    Dear Marina,
I watched the Lakers play the Magic on TV, hoping I’d see you in the crowd. I didn’t see you there, but enjoyed the game, anyway.

Your video reminded me of this joke: A happy couple were watching the game, and at half-time, the man said,
“I’ll go to the kitchen and fix a snack.”
She asks “Would you bring me some wheat crackers, sliced cheese, and the fresh blueberries?”
    “Sure.”
“Don’t forget we have some caviar. It would go nicely with the crackers and cheese.”
    “I’ll remember.”
Just before the second half of the game starts, he returns with two dishes of ham, bacon, eggs and freshly sliced peaches.
“Oh, you remembered,” she says excitedly, “But wait, you forgot the sourdough bread.”
