I bought me a Kindle reader last summer to have a way to store a souvenier of my nine published e-books and publications on Amazon. I had actually tried to have some small press make me one or two copies of each publication in a leather bound volume. But no one would help me. So, I got the Kindle reader and have all my little e-pubications on it!!!

I like the idea of not having to fight the binding on paperbacks to keep the book open while reading. I like the idea of being able to adjust the fonts, as far as size and style...at least I would hope that function would be optional. Downloads are cheap. That's good. But the upfront money isn't. I'm not reliable enough to remember to plug rechargeable items in. My iPod won't take a charge because I didn't use it for 6 months. They want to charge $45 to put a new battery in it...actually, they just send another ipod, not your own, so who knows how it's been treated in it's life? I bought a razor (as in electric razor) that wasn't chargeable. I adapt slowly.

The feel of paper under my fingers. I really like the texture of paper and the feel of a book. I get much more from my reading when I have the printed material. I also retain material much better when I write on paper. I also believe my most creative writing is when I use pen on paper. Then again, search features on electronic copies do make finding key words much easier.

Like practically everyone else here, I prefer the real, physical things. They come in varying shapes and sizes, are cheap, aren't very attractive to thieves, are usually fairly lightweight (unless it's non-fiction!), can be read in varying degrees of light and also advertise their contents, which act as a neat low-cost advertising strategy.

Oh, and one scent that's missing from the aerosol collection - that of a leather bookmark. Many tourist attractions here in the UK sell souvenir bookmarks - not only do they smell nice and act as a convenient reminder of how far through books you are, but they also remind you of your visit to the attraction. Somehow, I doubt e-Books could do that...

Evidently the aerosols are a joke, but if they had been manufactured they'd be a prime example of [Chindōgu]...

The smell from National Geographic or other glossy publications is not musty; it is the smell of the clay coating on the paper that makes it glossy. I remember that the smell of the mud in my 5th-grade schoolyard in San Antonio, TX was exactly the same. Every time I smell glossy paper, I remember crossing the yard in the rain and winding up with two inches of clay stuck to my shoes.

Now, there is a musty smell to some old magazines (like Life magazine) having a somewhat smooth paper (as opposed to newsprint or standard books). But I think they get that way through age, so the phrase "new book smell" would not apply. I wish I could smell the stuff so that I could tell for sure.

You can't beat real books. For a start if you loose tour book you can easily buy a new one. A book will not run out of batterys, and also I think loosong what page you were on is half the fun and kindle won't do that
