Marina, at least, both the YT Popular board and Most Viewed board have been locked since 7 AM this morning. There has been no movement of any videos in any direction. Normally, there is movement at least every hour of a video either moving towards page 1 or away from page 1.
CommunityChannel released a video this morning and it is now at 48K views, but has not made it to the Most Viewed board as the lowest views on that board is now in the 56K region.
A report is coming later tomorrow (Sunday) as I am organizing my thoughts and data.
Update: June 28 1:15 AM
About 5 minutes ago, two of the three “machinima” videos on the Most Viewed page came off of the board having been there for 48 hours.
One of his videos is entitled “The Game Show – Episode 2″ had been as high as position #48 and was pushed down to position #77 when he left the board with 56K views. The #77 slot is now occupied by a Michael Jackson entitled video. It appears a new machinima video got on the board just now called “Inside Gaming June 26″ with 24K views at position #89
Other than that, there still is no movement of videos.
ShaneDawsonTV2 released a video 17 hours ago now having 48K views and it is not on the Most Viewed board.

YouTube has finally broken up the stalemate lock on the Most Viewed board. There are now only 37 Michael Jackson videos on the board instead of 64. CommunityChannel, shanedawsontv2 and machinima are all on the board right now, but, they got jump started up very high on pages 1 and 2 with their lowest views being in the 53K range. The #100 spot has 21K views which is a huge decline from the previous 56K views in that position.
The Popular board is still locked up and has 18 Michael Jackson videos on it.
At this point in time, the Honors boards being swamped had nothing to do with you not getting on as that came much later after your video had plenty of time to get on. Small mini report coming in a couple of hours.
I feel like I should delete this video and upload it again. It’s embarrassing that YouTube broke like that for me on this video. I’m going to upload another video in a bit then kill this one and re-upload it later this week.

It’s after 9AM, yet there are no new comments on the 27th. Where is everybody? I am eating a 4-egg tomato-and-cheese omelette (which came out pretty damned well) and a stack of [flapjacks] expecting to see some juicy comments and there is dead silence. WTM?* Maybe it’s just the fact that it’s a Saturday morning and everyone is sleeping in. Maybe it’s because it’s going to be 105°F this afternoon, so everyone is out doing their thang while it’s still cool. Or maybe it’s “comment death.”
You know, after a lesson has aged just a bit too long, everyone has said all they want to say about it, and so the comments taper off until… well, nothing happens. Some bored TA should do a study and plot the number of new comments and reply comments against time. Does it vary a lot by lesson, or is it more or less the same for each lesson?

Hi CampKohler, yes I have done some “comments vs time” studies. In fact, the rate of change of comments follows a universal growth – decay curve similar to a capacitor charge and discharge cycle.
In absolute quantity of comments (views for videos), the quantity does vary by type of lesson / content, but the shape of the curve (rate of change) does not. There is heightened interest in the first two-three days, then a tapering off as time goes on.
Thanks for the info. Now we all know that a capacitor charge/discharge or an air tank fill/release all results from the physics of stuff going into an empty space and then resisting more stuff coming in by allowing less and less in per unit time until, after an infinitely long time, and infinitely small amount of stuff is allowed in. However, there is no physical relationship (that I know of) between the number of comments in a blog and the likelyhood of a user posting another one. So why should the curve be the same? Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice that the blog behaves the same way as natural physical processes, but why should it?
Another factor that we haven’t mentioned is the effect of a new lesson appearing. That of course would kill the buzz for the old one, so instead of a smooth curve, it should drop steeply when the new lesson comes out. Have you seen that?

Actually, you gave the answer in your first comment.

I agree with that and that is observable in my data.
You used the phrase, “natural physical processes”. Humans are physical and behave that way too. For example, by observation, you can see certain natural physical occurrences such as water seeking it’s own level, velocity and acceleration observations of physical objects and so on occur in human psychology.
You can observe similar types of patterns (analogues if you will) in the psychological world which manifests itself in the physical. For example, the Peter Principle appears to have similar outcomes as water seeking it’s own level. One occurs in the physical and the other in the non material world, but both have similar observable patterns.
By the way, that is also true of the financial world. If you’ve done any studies of the physical sciences and then compare it to the non-physical world of money and finance, you’ll see similar patterns.
For video views (or comments), I like using the automobile analogue the best. When there is a new video released, there is plenty of fuel (viewers). That fuel accelerates views very quickly at an almost exponential rate, until the fuel is spent, and then the rate of acceleration slows down (rate of views increase) and tapers off.
The approximate fuel supply (subscribers + some new viewers) to drive views onto page 1 is about two to three days, at which point there is a large drop of views – unless there is a promotion (magazine, interview, etc) that continues the acceleration of views, but at a slower rate.
You can tell a lesson is going stale when people start getting into flame wars. (See äläx et al. below.)
I apologize for my outburst. Under lots of pressure lately. Sorry. Just can’t understand how some people get some kind of gratification from being hateful. Should just feel sorry for them, I guess.

Option: 1/2 tsp of cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla
Mix ’til lump-free. Add about 1/4th c more milk until like heavy cream. Too much milk makes it like paper; too little, it’s too thick. On moderately hot oiled pan (cast iron is best; avoid Teflon), spoon in enough so that rolling around pan coats it thin. After top gloss disappears, flip over (should be golden brown). Cook until spots turn brown on bottom. Should be limp, not stiff like a tortilla. Plate, butter, sugar and liberal fresh lemon juice. Flick off seeds, roll and enjoy.
Adjust heat so that next pancake sizzles, but is not burned. First pancake is usually not the best; give to someone you don’t like.
Alternative topping: make fruit mixture of strawberries, peaches and other bits. (But that’s heresy.)

Marina, I’m glad that you changed back to the old channel, even if for about two weeks.
There is some serious wrong stuff with that new channel in terms of logic flow and making it easy to navigate; referring to the menus below the main video.
Say for example, a newbie clicks on Playlist. Now, the ratings stars are gone. The newbie won’t be able to rate because he won’t know what to click on to get the rating stars back if he even knows that it exists in the first place. The result. Ratings will be essentially non-existent. The Favorites is an action button which means there will be a ton of Favorites when the newbie doesn’t even he intended to Favorite a video. It happened to me several times.
I like the old layout because you did such an awesome job of making the two sites transparent of each other. The YT channel and this site flowed smoothly into each other. When you did that, that was a very smart thing to do. The new channel ruins all of that.
I can’t believe the views on the Poop MF video. There is some serious flaw going on. YT should re-imburse you for lost revenue.
I am really upset by not only that they are forcing the new channel design down our throats (I HATE the UNSUBSCRIBE button right above the video in the middle that screams UNSUBSCRIBE every time you watch a video on that channel – and they won’t change it).. but that I have no idea why the count on my latest video is at a level I saw two years ago. They say the counter was delayed but that does not seem correct.. I think it’s broken. I’m afraid to upload a new video.

I have been racking my brain for a whole day and cannot find the elusive loss of views. When searching for negative causes, it is very elusive and complex. I have been all over the net looking at every angle and I can’t come up with anything, except for the following:
- The Most Viewed board is blanketed with 64 Michael Jackson titles. More than half of those titles are MJ titled videos, or every other video.
- The Popular board only has 21 MJ titles.
- sxephil is on the Most Viewed board page 1 with a MJ title as well as the Popular board.
- I noticed that certain tweets have not been making it on the timeline such as the ones I make via TwittyPop and for about two days now or about the time you uploaded the above video June 24. See Twitter Help:

I’m wondering if there is a connection and I’m looking into that.
- I looked into network issues and all the routers are up. Asia is having some issues with packet loss so the quality of service is reduced.
- I looked into most of the tertiary sites (popurls, metacafe, etc) listing your videos. Some of them do have the above video listed, but many more do not.
- Looking at the ratios (views to ratings and views to comments) they are on the normal and low side.
Right now I see the entry of views to get on the MV views (pg5) in the 48K view range. Is it possible that the MJ videos blanketing the MV board prevented your video from being seen? I am researching that angle right now.
In the Forum I posted how the Japanese videos pushed your video back 18 positions.
By the way, it is true that the counter is delayed by at least an hour, but, it appears also to be broken. I take hourly data snapshots and right now there are no updates every one to two hours with hardly a budge. So, yes, there is a problem over at YT.
Also, did you notice that they have revamped the Video Honors boards navigation? First, there is the color change and instead of having the MV and Popular TABS (which are gone), there are now links below the gray horizontal bar. The page navigation at the bottom has also been moved to the far right instead of having it in the center.
I’m doing lots more work and will let you know.
Also Marina, take a look at CampKohler’s comment at comment #72 above where he says that there were no new comments this morning. I also saw that. The count at the bottom was around 38 and it is at 42 right now. That is on the low side in comparison to the recent weeks as it is usually around the 50-70 range or higher.
So, perhaps your videos are not being seen for a variety of reasons. I’m looking at my data to see how all of your videos are being affected. More to come later…

Yes, you are correct, seasonal influences do have an affect on a lot of things as well as environmental (heat, etc).
In this case, the affect seems to be to the extreme (30K views in 2 days), which indicates more than just seasonal or environmental influences. Marina had also changed the YT channel page after the release of that video which may have had an influence in the low views and YT is making a lot of changes everywhere on the YT site.
At the moment here in the greater LA area, it is 98 degrees F which is bearable and the nights are still cool. July, Aug, Sept it will get a lot worse I’m sure. At this moment it is 3 PM and my house is still cool without air conditioning or fans. Later on in the evening, I’ll be turning those on.
102 degrees @ my house in Austin-5:36 PM Central. Been cooler today.
I hate hot nights! The worst one ever was in Houston. It was like an acetylene torch with a built-in steam generator at 9PM. The hotel was built with the ends of the hallways open to the outside like it was Hawaii or something. God, it was awful.
However, in Sacto., it’s just the opposite. It cools off every evening (except for 3 or 4 nights a year), so you can take walks, etc. and enjoy it. It was 105°F today with a slight breeze, but it’s down to a nicely warm 98° at 8PM and still heading down. I have lived in TX, OK, WA and DC and visited a lot of other places, but I never entertained the thought of staying at any of them.

It was due to a mixup at the Congressional Statehood Matters Office in Washington, D.C. The state was actually to be named after the state bird, the Pink Breasted Blonde Booby, but the forms got misfiled when a clumsy janitor’s mop handle accidentally activated the fire alarm. To preserve records, the clerks had to quickly stuff all work in progress into fire safes before evacuating. When things returned to normal, some papers were found in the new state’s file that had to do with median strips, or road islands. Somehow this got spelled as Rhode Island, and the rest is history.

The closest I ever got to Michale Jackson was during the trial in Santa Maria, my doctor’s office was near court house, had to take side streets to avoid traffic that day. This was the day he got on the car roof.

Am I seeing that right? 23,158 views in appx 40 hours? Appx another 8 hours to go until the 48 hours is up and the video never made it to the Most Viewed board. Was this due to the channel changeover?
I had to tweak my code to match the new YT layout and got it done. The subs and channel data and Most Viewed and Popular boards data was not affected and I was tracking that all along OK.
I saw your comment on the YT Blog regarding moving the UnSubcribe button. I left a comment regarding two things that bug me. Another thing I noticed is that the list of videos do not display the “Run Time” as they did before. For most people it probably is not a big deal. I miss those numbers. Of course, once you click on a video, you’ll know the length of the video.

I noticed a change in the comments format today. Previously, the
Previous|1|2|(etc.)page-selection menu was identical at the top and bottom of each page (if I remember correctly). Now the bottom menu has been replaced with either anOlder CommentsorNewer Commentsbutton. Why was this done? It is basically a one-page-forward or one-page-back button, which is less useful than the page-selection menu it replaced.I just thought that since I can’t change the words in the paging thing.. the Previous Comments link might help those who don’t understand that they comments are paged. Is it bad?
I think the old way is easier to navigate. But that’s just me…reluctant to change!!

The page numbers are fairly intuitive; even the computer-illiterate knows what the numbers at the bottom of a book or magazine page are for. If someone is that Web-challenged, they would be hard-pressed to even find your site in the first place; they would pick up the mouse and say into it, “Computer, Marina’s Website, please. Um, hello… Helloooooooo. What is wrong with this thing?”
I won’t say it’s bad, but more options are always better than fewer options.

We went all over this when they were implemented here, but the complaints fell on deaf ears (or would blind eyeballs be more apt?). I suppose there were complaints of slow loading when the number of comments rose too high for a particular lesson.
The ideal solution would be to have a user-selectable preference for paging, but I don’t think that is an available option for WordPress. The next best thing would be to have a second Website that is identical in all respects except that there is no paging. The users could pick which one they wanted to use. (M: “Right! Like I don’t have enough to do now.”)
I do not think it was deaf eyes. Lady M gave substantial feedback that she was well aware of the situation and its accompanying complaints. The Lady explained that she felt the paged comments were the best option she had at present. I, personally, prefer the unpaged layout, but I appreciate the difficulties it may cause some.

Aside: entering a comment with html markup was hard for me on HFW site; on the linked site, someone has entered a comment with html/php markup — don’t know yet if that was entered the hard way (via escapes) or if that site has some easy way to capture comments with html markkup.
I think Marina has been on another site tweaking. If you notice at the top of the page where it says Dash it used to say Dashboard at one time then it use to say Site Admin or something of the sort. I think she likes to change things to see if we notice or maybe it helps out as far as making the site easier to use for us and her.
Now there is a fine old word. The dashboard was the wood in front of a carriage driver that kept him from being dashed with mud and water as he drove along. At one time, cars unabashedly had dashboards, although they were inside the passenger compartment and not subject to being dashed. Lately, a car company wouldn’t be caught dead (although two of them have recently very nearly been caught dead
) referring to a dashboard; it’s now the instrument panel, like it was on the Space Shuttle or a 747.
Somehow, for computers, somebody thought it was cool to be retro. So the early Macs starting having dashboards and radio buttons. The pendulum swings back and forth.
You can bet your bottom dollar that NASA has no dashboards or radio buttons on the Space Shuttle. The most that NASA ever went retro was keeping the name CAPCOM (capsule communicator) for the people that talk to the “spacemens.”
It’s the same like the glove box. Do you put gloves in the glove box. I don’t, I store the vehicles papers in it. Must have been back in the old days when autos didn’t have tops or windshields and they had to bundle up to stay warm. So they must have stored their gloves in the “glove box”.

They took away the number of videos you had uploaded from the top part of the video. Then they messed around with the ratings. Introduced most popular, which strangely is almost identical to the most viewed list. Only now most viewed overall is the same as most popular, meaning its not really right at all. Then they froze the views of people that got more than 301 in a day and made them out as cheats, but strangely partners were immune from it. Now they are obsessed with ads and then trying to make you feel better with useless add ons. Also they openly admitted they were using tracking cookies, which is awful. Now, they have made this horrible new layout that they want to make permanent. Despite everyone on the blog saying they hate it, they just don’t listen
It’s in beta so some stuff may be missing… Hmm, yes I know exactly what the next plan is just to fuck things up even more for us all, I think they will have a big box for ads on peoples channels; you will only make money from them if you are a partner. Another stupid thing is that youtube actually has ads in the video. Ridiculous. When you watch a video, you are watching it because you want to, and not be bugged by stupid banners at the bottom of the screen. Although they have for gotten about their famous “algorithmic demotion” they still manage to mess things up, Marina used to upload when her video reached 24 on the most viewed list, but now they are messing it around, she can’t and I bet that has affeceted her income. It also loads video VERY slowly now. This is stupid.. I really hope youtube falls on its ass.

Yes, there are 25,429 comments about the new YTchannel layout where more than 90% of those comments are not happy with the new design.
I think change is good if it innovates, but this new design looks awful and is confusing where it may detract from attracting new visitors. The average person will be less inclined to explore the channel which may mean less views.
I liked Marina’s old channel where she showcased several videos below the main video, and then showcased her favorites.
One explicit goal YouTube had for the new design was to help the channel to retain the viewer on the channel’s page “forever”. Toward this end, when one now clicks on a video that video plays on the same page (in the past, a new page dedicated to that video was loaded). All the things that were on the previous design’s dedicated-to-one-video page (such as comments, rank, video response etc.) are still available on the channel’s page itself.
But one can question things such as whether seeing comments in a tiny scroll window constitutes comments being available!
In an attempt to cram everything on one page, the individual parts have been made so tiny that they are now effectively invisible! So other than the currently playing video and a few other items there is nothing “usefully-visible” on the channel’s page!

YouTube has totally gone off of the deep end and is on drugs. As you mentioned, YT had a goal in mind, but they have failed to execute it as I think it will drive people away.
Above the main video is a label called “Uploads”. As a verb, it doesn’t do what I expect, so it makes no sense. Is that supposed to be a replacement term for “videos”?
So, they decide to use a text label called “Uploads”, but to the far right they have two icons which the average non-techie visitor won’t know what it means until they hover over the icon or experiment.
Then, below the video there are what I might term as six menu items such as Info, Comments, and so on. Clicking each item gives me information below that menu list. So far so good, until you get to Favorites, which activates immediately. So, the Favorites item is actually an action button that favorites a video which I might not want to favorited.
Right now, the article on the new update on the YT Blog has 2,788 comments, or very roughly, 240 comments added in the last hour.
This is so funny. Earlier this morning there were 24,000+ comments in over 110 pages. Now, there are 2,550 comments in 13 pages. Looks like YT is busy removing comments as new comments are appearing every few minutes.
You are kidding! They are evil.

YouTube is continuing to evolve. I have mixed feelings about their new channel design. What is neat is that you can scroll through all 455+ HotForWords videos with one scroll of the videos page and be able to sort on different parameters like Most Viewed and Highest Rated. The new channel design will be permanent for everyone coming July 15th.
I see the Popular page #1 has an additional panel of videos below it called
“As Seen On”, showing selected websites that have embedded YT videos. That’s interesting that they are in effect promoting web sites containing YT videos.

I was on the stern of a boat ready to jump off to tie it to the dock at a restaurant . Just as I was to jump another boat created a wake, this hit the boat just as I jumped to the dock, it sent me flying in the air I landed, I took a roll and with the line still in my hand wrap it around the cleat. All this in one smooth motion. The ppl on the outside patio all clapped then I went inside to have a cocktail.

Procol Harum’s lyricist Keith Reid wrote the words to this song. He told us: “It’s sort of a film, really, trying to conjure up mood and tell a story. It’s about a relationship. There’s characters and there’s a location, and there’s a journey. You get the sound of the room and the feel of the room and the smell of the room. But certainly there’s a journey going on, it’s not a collection of lines just stuck together. It’s got a thread running through it.” Reid got the idea for the title when it came to him at a party, which gave him a starting point for the song. Funny I thought of the same thing. Why didn’t they make it easier and round it up. Well it’s because of the size of the earth. With this bases of measurement we can can accurately place our selves on a chart (not a map, for they are not accurate). So one minute of arc of a great circle of the Earth is equal to one nautical mile.

All navigation uses the Nautical Mile as the unit of distance. Traditionally a nautical mile is 6,080 feet but more precisely 6,076.11549 feet. In metric measurement it is 1,852 meters, which is one minute of arc of a great circle of the Earth. All our US Charts are printed in nautical miles (knots). With this we can do Time, Speed, and Distance calculations with just a 4 function calculator and some basic tools. A good chronograph is also key. If you know what time it is you can find your place on the planet rather well. It’s so amazing how they used to be able to navigate back in the day with simple tools.
What’s really interesting is the Chip Log used to be more accurate way of measuring speed than the early days of GPS. Yes, you read me right. More accurate than GPS.
I have 4 books that cover nautical terms. I used them to entertain passengers on cruises when conversations become a bit stale. A good friend of mine got me started in etymology before I even knew what the term was. He used to have a note book full of origins of nautical terms that he collected over the years.
Later on I discovered Marina’s Youtube videos. Thanks to Marina’s lessons and comments, I have discovered many false origins. Next time I’ll tell more accurate stories. That said I still tell the old ones, like Ship High In Transit acronym. I later reveal that it’s false and that there are many more like them. They are such good stories, I could not let them die.
