Marina, at least, both the YT Popular board …

Comment posted on Poop Deck Answer by pedantickarl

Marina, at least, both the YT Popular board and Most Viewed board have been locked since 7 AM this morning. There has been no movement of any videos in any direction. Normally, there is movement at least every hour of a video either moving towards page 1 or away from page 1.

CommunityChannel released a video this morning and it is now at 48K views, but has not made it to the Most Viewed board as the lowest views on that board is now in the 56K region.

A report is coming later tomorrow (Sunday) as I am organizing my thoughts and data.

    Update: June 28, 2009 5:47 AM
YouTube has finally broken up the stalemate lock on the Most Viewed board. There are now only 37 Michael Jackson videos on the board instead of 64. CommunityChannel, shanedawsontv2 and machinima are all on the board right now, but, they got jump started up very high on pages 1 and 2 with their lowest views being in the 53K range. The #100 spot has 21K views which is a huge decline from the previous 56K views in that position.

The Popular board is still locked up and has 18 Michael Jackson videos on it.

At this point in time, the Honors boards being swamped had nothing to do with you not getting on as that came much later after your video had plenty of time to get on. Small mini report coming in a couple of hours.

    Update: June 28 1:15 AM
About 5 minutes ago, two of the three “machinima” videos on the Most Viewed page came off of the board having been there for 48 hours.

One of his videos is entitled “The Game Show – Episode 2″ had been as high as position #48 and was pushed down to position #77 when he left the board with 56K views. The #77 slot is now occupied by a Michael Jackson entitled video. It appears a new machinima video got on the board just now called “Inside Gaming June 26″ with 24K views at position #89
Other than that, there still is no movement of videos.

ShaneDawsonTV2 released a video 17 hours ago now having 48K views and it is not on the Most Viewed board.

    Hi CampKohler, regarding your comment;
“However, there is no physical relationship (that I know of) between the number of comments in a blog and the likelyhood of a user posting another one.”

Actually, you gave the answer in your first comment.
    You said:
“You know, after a lesson has aged just a bit too long, everyone has said all they want to say about it, and so the comments taper off until… well, nothing happens.”

I agree with that and that is observable in my data.

You used the phrase, “natural physical processes”. Humans are physical and behave that way too. For example, by observation, you can see certain natural physical occurrences such as water seeking it’s own level, velocity and acceleration observations of physical objects and so on occur in human psychology.

You can observe similar types of patterns (analogues if you will) in the psychological world which manifests itself in the physical. For example, the Peter Principle appears to have similar outcomes as water seeking it’s own level. One occurs in the physical and the other in the non material world, but both have similar observable patterns.

By the way, that is also true of the financial world. If you’ve done any studies of the physical sciences and then compare it to the non-physical world of money and finance, you’ll see similar patterns.

For video views (or comments), I like using the automobile analogue the best. When there is a new video released, there is plenty of fuel (viewers). That fuel accelerates views very quickly at an almost exponential rate, until the fuel is spent, and then the rate of acceleration slows down (rate of views increase) and tapers off.

The approximate fuel supply (subscribers + some new viewers) to drive views onto page 1 is about two to three days, at which point there is a large drop of views – unless there is a promotion (magazine, interview, etc) that continues the acceleration of views, but at a slower rate.

  • Hi Chemikal,
Yes, you are correct, seasonal influences do have an affect on a lot of things as well as environmental (heat, etc).

In this case, the affect seems to be to the extreme (30K views in 2 days), which indicates more than just seasonal or environmental influences. Marina had also changed the YT channel page after the release of that video which may have had an influence in the low views and YT is making a lot of changes everywhere on the YT site.

At the moment here in the greater LA area, it is 98 degrees F which is bearable and the nights are still cool. July, Aug, Sept it will get a lot worse I’m sure. At this moment it is 3 PM and my house is still cool without air conditioning or fans. Later on in the evening, I’ll be turning those on.

    Also Rijk,
I’m not sure about this, but posting several posts in succession might also flag someone as a potential spammer. For example, I know over in the Forum, it is slightly different, but the posts here may have a similar rule.

When I submit a post in the Forum, and then submit another post within a minute or so, then there is a pop-up with a reminder that says something to the effect, “Slow Down….” So, maybe that might apply here also.

    Greetings noobsaibott,
I welcome you to the HotForWords site, and I hope you get to know the people while you are here.

I’m not known for being laconic, but, this time I’ll make an exception.

    You have it very wrong.

Notice, I didn’t say YOU are wrong. I said, you are having a miss-understanding. You are having a projection of your own mind placed upon others, which is tangentially incorrect. A lot of us come here to interact with people like you and Marina is just the icing.

Leonard’s been here since Mar ‘08 and I have been here since June ‘08. Sit down, rest awhile and get to know everyone.
Trust me, the world really does work that way.

I could go on, but I have just blown it.
    I’ll never be laconic.

    Damiana,
I answered Rijk over here regarding the question of spam.

I only list a few known items that can cause your comment to be flagged as spam. I can tell you from personal experience that when I post a comment on my own blog as a non-logged in user, all of my comments are flagged as spam and I can only guess that it is either related to my domain or it is related to the username being on a list (black list) from other postings elsewhere. I would have to research the spam filter’s rules to see what’s going on.

In your case, if you created another username such as Damiana1 for example, and if your comments were still being flagged, it would indicate a blacklisting of your domain or cookies. Clear your cookies and see what happens. Of course you will lose your personalizations and you would have to key your username and passwords back in again.

As background information, here is the Wordpress information on the spam filter called Akismet.

    Hi CK,
My reference to accessibility refers more to the idea of usability in terms of browser standards and ability to present a consistent user experience across all platforms and browsers. Handicapped accessibility certainly is one of those elements and comes under a variety of guidelines such as WAI, UAAG, ATAG, ADA and others.

Hearing impaired Closed Captioning is usually done by people with the skillset and technology to create accurate captioning. It is not a trivial task unless a TA has that skillset or the time. Of course you don’t have to be a TA to volunteer to do this kind of work. Anyone with the time and skill set can do it.

All one needs is to get permission from Marina to replicate the video and then to insert the captioning which can be either hard captioned (visible at all times) or Closed Captioned using YouTube’s player technology.

A two minute video would take me about 20 min to an hour or more to transcribe and add the captioning. The reason for the time is that some words require to be looked up, insert corrections as needed and verify the proper transcription. Someone with a transcribing skillset would be able to do it much more quickly than I could. There are tools that can help, such as speech to text converters. I have not tried it on these videos yet.

Many of the hearing impaired institutes hire people to do these kinds of tasks, and I think many of them are very busy. There is always the question of demand and how many hearing impaired users would this help.

I would think that anyone aligned with the hearing impaired community would take the lead in this endeavor in order to create and implement a plan for captioning.

    Hi Jan,
I added a summary of Marina’s 9th visit to the O’Reilly Factor show in the Forum. You can also see my previous summaries of all of Marina’s visits to O’Reilly.
