YouTube removes “Broadcast Yourself” slogan, again.

broadcast-yourself

Oh, the conspiracies!

YouTube had another major design change yesterday.  This time the look is minimalistic… So minimalistic, in fact, that they’ve taken away the “Broadcast Yourself” tag-line!

The last time they removed the slogan, it caused quite a stir with people rebranding the site “ThemTube” or “HuluTube” and YouTube responded by bringing back the slogan.  But it has disappeared again.

Is this the start of YouTube, again, attempting to move away from user generated content?

What are your thoughts?

By the way, I am not concerned about this for myself, as I am already established with YouTube, but does this make it more difficult for those just starting out? Or, is it just another “non-event?”

*Note – YouTube rolls out design changes over time, so unless you see the new look that I show below, you are not seeing the new design yet.  Noticed how Search is right next to the logo and WorldWide and languages have been moved to the bottom of the page.

  1. I just looked and the slogan is there. Es muy non-evento, as they say in Spainland.

Let’s talk about something else. A two-alarm grass fire here caused the Disney-owned radio station’s tower to collapse and another nearby tower to bend. It’s hard to believe that a grass fire could get so hot that it could do that. Or we could discuss toothpicks: flat or round?

Perhaps YT’s aim is not what many viewers want it to be. Mebbe, long ago, YT wanted to create something new, make a statement… My guess is that YT’s goal now is strictly financial gain. If that is the case, many old schoolers may not like the product, but YT’s bottom line may be better off. :|

    • Captain Jack says:

When it comes to doing business as with a pubic traded company, financial gain it TOP PRIORITY. If anyone tells you different then they are selling you something. When a company fails to protect the bottom line then bad things happen that make a company at risk of going bankrupt.

  3. Youtube has already answered the question how they value the small, non-partner channels now in their blog:

Myth 5: YouTube is only monetizing 3-5% of the site. This oft-cited statistic is old and wrong, and continues to raise much speculation. In our view, the percentage is far less important than the total number of monetized views, and we are now helping partners generate revenue from hundreds of millions of video views in the U.S. every week (and billions worldwide), more than any other video site has total views. Monetized views have more than tripled in the past year, as we’re adding partner content very quickly and doing a better job of promoting their videos across the site.

As an established partner, Marina can expect that her videos will be shown on the front page, a small user who is just starting can’t.

    Is the YT experiment over?

Yesterday (July 21), from around 3 PM to about 8 PM,
the YT logo was shown as Marina indicated
up above referring to the image above, right side
    labeled “Today”

Now (July 22), appx. 6 hours later (1:47 AM), YouTube
has gone back to the logo as indicated in the
image above in the middle panel labeled “Last Week”

  5. argh. i was responding back and it shot my comment up, excuse me.

  6. Okay Captain. I have respect for you in that you headed back to live in the sea and decided to abandon the land creatures. Your opening comment on this topic irks me however.

Ok so the question begs, why would Youtube remove a trademark slogan and not replace it with a new one? Well it’s obsolete!

Let me explain to you guys why. The slogan ‘Broadcast Yourself’ is not appropriate when more companies every day are putting their corporate videos on YoutTube. In fact the name of the company “YOU-Tube” it’s self is inappropriate.

It would not surprise me if the name got changed sometime in the future. It’s now a mix of big budget companies competing with amateur youtubers.

    three strikes and you’re out.

    1. it’s the so-called amateurs who built youtube to begin with.

    2. “YOU-Tube” it’s self is inappropriate??? now show me your union card Captain. fail.

3.you, i say “you” say the trademark is obsolete. if that’s the case then i suppose google trademark is obsolete also according to SOME bloggers. like i should really give a fig what bloggers blog.

    • Captain Jack says:

Ok first off, please reply to a comment I made so the site can generate an email to let me know you’re addressing me. I don’t read every single comment on the entire site to see if someone is addressing me. I was just zipping to my last comment and caught yours just by chance. Thanks. ;-)

#1, who cares who built youtube? I helped build the first cellphone, but does any one care? My original goal was a new form of inexpensive communications that would be cheaper than a land line. Well that never happen. In fact the reverse happened.

#2, Let me ask you this, would it be appropriate to call NBC, ABC, CBS ‘You-TV’???
Union card? You don’t make any sense.

#3, I was not talking about google.
Branding is very important. Some companies fail at re-branding their company. For example ‘State Farm Insurance’ no longer insures farms. They should use a re-branding service.

      • aLx says:

you helped build the first cell phone? at age 10? with the goal of a new form of communication? at age -(minus) 16? not bad.

        • Captain Jack says:

Not directly. I didn’t invent the damn thing. The concept was talked about in the 1940. Then that Dr Cooper guy put something out in the 1970′s. I should have said ‘cellphone network’ As a ham radio operator, I was using radios to make phone calls. My friend and I worked on a simple form of switch from one station (tower) to the other without expensive microchips. We didn’t want to see a big corporate take advantage of the technology and make it proprietary. So we were looking for an cheaper alternative that could be supported by local cities. Buy a radio and pay a small annual fee to the city to maintain the towers. Kind of similar what we experience on getting free WiFi today.

      • i know of many inventors with inventions that have helped to make the world a better place to live in. some humble, others not so humble. you wouldn’t be able to drive a vehicle on the road if it wasn’t for me.

for your information i’m still using a land phone and prefer those over handheld cellphones that may be linked to cancerous tumors to the brains
        of it’s users.

branding is what ranchers do to cattle. hotforwords already did a lesson on that.

& yes for me it would be more than appropriate to call NBC, ABC, CBS, and every other television affiliated organization YOUTUBETELEVISION because everyone that pays for cable has to put up with paying for 300 plus channels of squat they’ll never ever watch.

        • Captain Jack says:

Really? Cool, what did you do to make this possible?

Let me clear something up for you and others reading our comments. Cellphone do not cause cancerous tumors. That is a myth. Period! Our sun radiates more cancer causing radiation than your cellphone could ever do. I don’t know why this myth keeps proliferating even though it’s been debunk many times by different people.

“& yes for me it would be more than appropriate to call NBC, ABC, CBS, and every other television affiliated organization YOUTUBETELEVISION”
Ok, I’m done with this conversation with you. You’re just jerking my chain with nonsense again.

          • I disagree. More bogus climate change talk. You really are falling into greenism aren’t you. Thank you for the pleasant chat.
            Have a nice day.

          • It was a worldwide project. Let’s just say I know a certain celebrity figure who had more than sixty outstanding speeding tickets to their credit.

          • i’m bored with ppl who have to mask a right on a wrong by blaming a wrong on a right. everyone by now should know about the sun, that it gives off natural solar rays which offers photosynthesis that makes the plant life and vegetation lush on the planet. cell phones didn’t grow out of the ground and are signal radiating gadgets which bombard the soft shelled skulls of humans with a heavy dose of electrical radiation. it’s like having a blaring radio pressed against your ear all day long.

        • Captain Jack says:

Oh your just not going to give up hu? ok….

“cell phones didn’t grow out of the ground and are signal radiating gadgets which bombard the soft shelled skulls of humans with a heavy dose of electrical radiation. it’s like having a blaring radio pressed against your ear all day long.”

You obviously know nothing about the output power of a cellphone electrical magnetic radiation when transmitting. Yet you claim you know what your talking about. :x I can tell you how this theory is false but I have a feeling you would not believe me. So!!!

Let me make challenge to you to really show your “Greatest Potential” :!: I have a home work assignment for you if you’re willing to accept it. You can even use Google all you want. Show me your sources of why you think cellphones cause cancer from the radiation it put out. I don’t want to hear “Billy Bob told me it’s so and I believe everything he tells me.”

I think this little assignment will help clear the air once and for all on this myth or fact which either way it turns out.

So GP are you up to it?

          • Yes Captain Jack, I will play along. As long as it does not require me to place a cell phone close to my ear. You know I value my sperm count. Is that just rumour too?, that cell phones zap a man’s sperm count down to nil???

          • The honey bees are still trying to find their way back to their hive but with all the scrambled cell phone signals in the air the bees are having a tough go at it. I will complete the homework assignment for those honey makers.

          • there are many types of radiation and the subtle fields of say, gamma radiation, are not even recognized by the scientific community as being anything but subtle. but who is measuring the radiation count? oh, cell phone companies are. so i’m sure i will have plenty of disinformation to wade through and since these companies make bundles of money for what should be free air wave transmission. it’s not like they’d put out anything but what they want to promote more cell phone usage so it’s not like a fair homework assignment but i will see what i can come up with anyway.

        • Captain Jack says:

Sperm is very resistant little buggers. But even if they were not the radiation would not penetrate the skin enough to vibrate the water molecules to boil. So they are safe.

Cellphones do not effect honey bees. Once you discover how a cellphone works you will see that this to be true.

Let me give you some clues to get you started. Where do you find radios that transmit a signal? AM/FM radio? TV Broadcast? Aircraft? Fire & Police? Radar? Yes all of them. Ok lets take Radar. It’s just a high frequency radio right?
Now lets look a Microwave oven. Google microwave ovens and tell me how they work. What is going on that makes a microwave cook your food or heat up your coffee?

          ;-)

          • I won’t stand next to a microwave oven when it’s on. Your sperm could get cooked. It’s cool that sperm are survivalists but an electrical storm is going on inside a microwave oven when it’s on. Heat is shaking the molecules up and cooking the food.

Microwaves are waves of electromagnetic energy- EM which stands for electromagnetic. There’s a box inside the microwave oven that’s called a magnetron that’s similar to a cathode ray tube which is in television sets and that gives off high voltage which then converts electric currents into microwaves.

            Fascinating stuff Captain Jack

I’ve seen videos where people put their cell phones on a table and place popcorn kernals in the middle and when their cell phones ring together it pops the popcorn in a matter of seconds. That’s real enough to where the signals generate enough energy to cook popcorn!

            :!:

      • Captain Jack

i apologize for the mix up on the comment & thanks for the advice.

        • Captain Jack says:

Sure thing. It really helps. It’s also a big time saver. ;-)

        • Captain Jack says:

You won’t get cooked next to a microwave oven. The waves are to large to pass through the mess screen. I’ve put my face right up to the damn thing many times.

The Magnetron! Yeay! So the magnetron excites only water molecules. The magnetron is tuned just for water. That why your coffee is hot but not the mug.

Oh thank you! You brought up my favorite subject! The cellphone popcorn myth. This was the first day I learned the true intelligence of YouTube staff that could not figure out how the trick worked. It only took me about 12 minutes to figure out how that was done. It took me about a week to find a video of someone debunking it.
There is some water in dried corn. How that trick was done was to take out a magnetron and place it under the table. Then all they had to do it at the right time when the cellphones were just about to ring, someone would plug in the magnetron.

Ok now you know that the cellphone popcorn thing is just a trick. Now most magnetrons are anywhere from 500 watts to 1100 watts of power. Ok so you know how long it would take to boil a cup of water. Now lets say you have a 1 watt microwave. How long would it take to bring that cup of water to a boil??

          • there’s that mesh screen in the glass to keep in the microwaves, right. What if the door hinge is loose??? like if someone is microwaving a burrito in one of those tin foil wrappers at the mini mart and microwaves are leaking out the microwave oven from the sides maybe it could it cause ppl to get cancer.

Ok now you know that the cellphone popcorn thing is just a trick.

            whew!

i think it takes just under a minute to boil a cup of water in a 1 watt microwave. microwaves boil liquid up quick. if liquid is kept in a running microwave for too long it bubbles up over the cup and messes the glass rotating spinwheel inside.

        • Captain Jack says:

“What if the door hinge is loose???”

You’ll be fine. There is a little bit of metal around the door that keep the waves in if the door is a bit off.

“if someone is microwaving a burrito in one of those tin foil wrappers at the mini mart and microwaves are leaking out the microwave oven from the sides maybe it could it cause ppl to get cancer.”

Tin foil is not good for your food. It just keeps it from cooking well and also it gets ionized which you will see sparks and a glow of ions.

You can not get cancer from a microwave. For example can you get cancer from lighting a match under your hand. Why is this, because your just heating your hand to the point of burning it. All a microwave does is excites water so rapidly it warms it’s self up to the point it starts to boil. It’s just like rubbing your hands together really fast.

Now about the 1 watt of power. You didn’t read my question. How long will it take to boil water with a 1 watt microwave oven (as if such a thing ever existed). Now we know it take about microwave and about 2 minutes with a 1100 watt oven. It takes about 3 minutes with a 500 watt microwave oven. I was talking about a 1 watt microwave oven. So how long would a 1 watt microwave oven take?

          ;-)

          • Tin foil is not good for your food. It just keeps it from cooking well and also it gets ionized which you will see sparks and a glow of ions.

I hear if you put a plastic bowl full of food into a microwave oven it’s no good because plastic particles can get into the food and make people sick.

If you put a slab of steel or stacks of forks and spoons and knifes into a microwave oven and turn it on full blast sparks and flames will shoot out, and lots of smoke too, and burnt smell. That must be the sparks and glow of ions you mentioned about.

For example can you get cancer from lighting a match under your hand.

Ouch. What if someone puts cigarettes out on you, like from kink experiment play. As in grinding a lit cigarette into the soft tender part of the thigh. Can a person get cancer from that?

Now about the 1 watt of power. You didn’t read my question

Oh, I read the question. I guess I flubbed up the answer though (lol)
Uh, I will say about 10 minutes. 1 watt of power, hmmm, seems that would be like trying to boil water with a 9V duracell battery under a hot plate.

        • Captain Jack says:

“I hear if you put a plastic bowl full of food into a microwave oven it’s no good because plastic particles can get into the food and make people sick.”

That used to be true years ago. There were some plastics that had chemicals that leached out making people sick. But now days it’s no longer an issue. Frozen dinner are now in microwave safe plastic trays and the FDA says they are safe. Some plastic trays/bowl says right on them that they are microwave safe.

“If you put a slab of steel or stacks of forks and spoons and knifes into a microwave oven and turn it on full blast sparks and flames will shoot out, and lots of smoke too, and burnt smell. That must be the sparks and glow of ions you mentioned about.”

What your are creating is plasma gas from super heating air inside the microwave. You can do the same thing with a grape or a lit match. I do have to caution you about this because the gas is ‘NO2′ or [Nitrogen dioxide] which is very toxic if you inhale it. It will freaking kill you so don’t try it.

(Nitrogen dioxide [NO2] is toxic by inhalation, but this could be avoided as the material is acrid and easily detected by our sense of smell. Symptoms of poisoning (lung edema) tend to appear several hours after one has inhaled a low but potentially fatal dose. Also, low concentrations (4 ppm) will anesthetize the nose, thus creating a potential for overexposure. NO2 is a reddish-brown toxic gas has a characteristic sharp, biting odor and is a prominent air pollutant. Car & Trucks make this stuff all the time.)

So in other words, stop making plasma and sparks in your oven! Just watch it on video here.

“Ouch. What if someone puts cigarettes out on you, like from kink experiment play. As in grinding a lit cigarette into the soft tender part of the thigh. Can a person get cancer from that?”

What I should have put a ‘?’ mark on that sentence. It was a question for you. No, you can NOT get cancer from getting burned from a lit match. You should Google cancer and get a better understanding what it is.

“Oh, I read the question. I guess I flubbed up the answer though (lol)”

          Ok, understandable.

“Uh, I will say about 10 minutes. 1 watt of power, hmmm, seems that would be like trying to boil water with a 9V duracell battery under a hot plate.”

The answer is probably never. The heat would escape before it would even warmed up. I like your example of 9v battery running a hot plate. Yeah thats about it. Well more like a watch battery running a hot plate.

So what we learned here? We know that a magnetron excites water which creates heat. It take a lot of watts of power to make this happen. We know that if we had a magnetron that was only 1 watt of power wouldn’t do much of anything. We know that burning your skin does not cause cancer. We also know boiling water does not cause cancer.

With your help ‘Greatestpotential’ ;-) , We can conclude that a (.7) to (1) watt cellphone will not cause cancer. Good Job GP! Now you can tell all your friends that you know for a fact that Cellphones don’t cause cancer for you helped with much of the investigation of this myth. Now you see how doing your homework can make you smarter!

  7. Captain Jack says:

Marina, why did you even consider posting this? I thought you were against talk about conspiracies of the hand that feeds you? Your so funny M!

    ———————————

Ok so the question begs, why would Youtube remove a trademark slogan and not replace it with a new one? Well it’s obsolete! Let me explain to you guys why. The slogan ‘Broadcast Yourself’ is not appropriate when more companies every day are putting their corporate videos on YoutTube. In fact the name of the company “YOU-Tube” it’s self is inappropriate. It would not surprise me if the name got changed sometime in the future. It’s now a mix of big budget companies competing with amateur youtubers.

Youtubers are no longer a marketable product according to some bloggers. Yes there are a few super stars out there that can compete with the big budget companies but what about the little youtubers that are just starting out? How will they make it worth their time and money to put out a quality product to compete? I myself looking at a budget of around $20,000 to $60,000 for my first season on YouTube. The short list, cameras, audio, lighting, crews, airfare, hotels, computers, software, models, advertising, did I miss anything? Hey this is only my short list. $12,000 has already been spent and it’s a freaking joke.

YT is trying to mix David and Goliath together and hoping they get along fine. Fat chance with their present model! Youtube should hire me as a consultant. I could turn the company around so that David & Goliath would be begging to be mixed together. I would guaranty the naysayer bloggers jaws would drop from the change.
With that said, I can see why it would be a great business decision to pull away from User Generated Content (UGC). Hulu even showed it was profitable not having UGC.

On a separate subject with the YT blog post on the July 20th.
If Communications and Public Affairs department would do their jobs of informing people of the changes sooner they wouldn’t have these conspiracies digging in and growing to the size they are today. (Note: It might not be their fault, but of the mangers of that department should have been more proactive) How long have these myths been out? Seven months or more? Im referring also to the YouTube link that hs4mm so kindly posted below. Would someone ever sail with me if after the ship sank, I then tell the passengers that we have life jackets available and also life boats for them to use. It just to little to late.
I have always been taught that if a companies isn’t speaking on certain subjects then they might have something dark to hide. If I hear of a rumor of any kind, I squash it very quickly. If I can’t explain why something is the way it is I at least let me crew know that I’m aware of the rumor. Sometimes just stating that I’m aware of it kills the rumor. “Tight lips, sink ships.” -JR

    What are your thoughts people?

    • HotForWords says:

Well.. I know it would open a can of worms.. but I can tell you with 100% certainty, that anyone can launch a channel today and have it be successful with no more money than it took people a few years ago. (Meaning, hardly any money at all… just a camera and the time to make videos.)

I love the conspiracy theories.. but YouTube is about user generated content and will always be… even if YouTube doesn’t realize it yet! :-)

      • Captain Jack says:

Yeah, you seem to be attracted to go where no worm has gone before.

Speaking about conspiracy theories I just talked to a guy I met at that Kirkland party last Sunday, that he just heard about the fake moon landing a few days ago. Go figure! It still amazes me that some people have never heard of YouTube, or even worse, I find people that never heard of twitter.

Yes it true you need very little to start a channel. You have no idea what I have planned for my show. My goal is to get peoples jaws to drop. There is things that I have seen the made me say OMG and I thought I seen it all. For example I’m working on the story board for the fire fighting episode. People are going to see a real fire fight on a land ship. I will even have my ass lit on fire for a funny joke. In another story I’ll be showing a giant spider looking thing that speeds on water. It’s really big, about 3 stories tall. It was built up here in Washington state and has made it’s way to California.
Just down the dock from where I’m moored is a personal sub that is painted up to look like an Orca whale. Originally built by U.S. Submarines for Swedish Navy to train against Soviet Mini-submarine incursions into Sweden’s territorial waters. You can now have your own sub for only $480k!!

YouTube doesn’t realize many things. Nothing new here. The question is, do they really care? Have they lost the passion? What is not realized is the YT partner community can make make YT very successful if they organized.

Yes, your right Google is just the cargo ship. Google may own and finance Youtube but YouTube is a separate company from it’s parent owner Google. YouTube has it’s own managers and employees. That said, there are other services Google does for Youtube. Some of the ad sales and marketing for YouTube is done at Google in Fremont.

    • You’re sentences cause me confusion. Your lack of using periods and proper grammar is very difficult for me to understand what you are talking about.

If you’re going to make your case you have to be able to set the example. That was not proper grammar.

  10. pedanticKarl says:

    Personally I believe it is a non-event.

For those just starting out, it won’t be any more difficult nor will it be any easier. Sure, there is more competition than two years ago, but then, there are more tools and proven ideas than can be emulated.

In fact, it is more difficult to maintain the lead as nothing goes up forever and it is more difficult to innovate as time goes on. The idea of diminishing returns is always present. This has been proven to be the case in many industries that fail to watch their competition and can also be seen amongst comedians, musicians (one hit wonders), entertainers and so on.

In the end, it requires the things that made Marina successful which is vision, being intelligently persistent in the face of adversity and lots of hard work. Too many people give up way too early and many people are not focused.

Too many people also buy into the myths and they fail before even getting started and many people fail for doing the right things for the wrong reasons. A lot of times one has to make like a bumblebee and not know that you aren’t supposed to be able to fly.

YouTube just wants to make money, and in a way Marina I wish you would stop uploading to YouTube and just make all your videos here, and get a message to them that WE *including alx* made YouTube, and we can take it away too. Grr. I know they have removed the slogan, but it just further proves that “broadcast yourself” is what the website was built on, and now they don’t care anymore because they are successful. Well, I hope they go bust. It will teach them that being greedy will be your downfall. I think I will get people to upload huge videos that are just blank. Just to waste their bandwith
