I hope to get my book signed too. I hope you will make more appearances across the country.

  2. MCLIJazz says: 76

I got back home from Borders about an hour ago. I had a great time. I and other regulars from here and YouTube might be in a future video.

  3. ronaldmu says: 75

What is the meaning and etymology of the word [quakebuttock]?

  4. Chemikal says: 74

    To everyone that’s going:
Please charge your cameras, make sure you have plenty of free memory and don’t forget to share your footage. I want to see how much fun one of these gatherings can be. I’d have to fly nearly 5000 miles to attend, so I think I’ll pass on this one :-)

All the best wishes to everyone who will be attending and I hope you’ll have a great time.

    • bigbhd95 says: 74.1

hey tnx Chemikal, not really sorry you wont be there
due to the fact it will surely be a mad house  plus that should
give me a little more time to talk M into a ride on my hog
BUT I will have my phone charged up for as many pictures as possible   B.B.

  5. alexf40 says: 73

Thanks for the welcome Jack, fingers crossed for [cacophony] ;-)

  6. alexf40 says: 72

Please can I request the word [cacophony]

    Thanks Alex

  7. Hi marina, Can you explain where & when (finagled) originated? Thanxamillion!

  8. gghot says: 70

Captain Jack misspelled the name Oprah. Isn’t it time for him to walk the plank. You’re #1 hot student.

  9. StylinAzn says: 69

    Hello Marina

What is the origin of the word [Wow] as in to show amazment. For example: Wow Marina is so sexy!!!

    Your original fan

  10. tonyb says: 68

New York City is about 500 miles away from Toledo but I don’t have a way there!! the turnpike sign said that.

  11. blankstate says: 67

Hello i like your videos very much and my question was on the word[comedy] like in the divine comedy, i know the book is not supposed to be funny but it bothers me.

  12. ronaldmu says: 65

I would like to request the word: quakebuttock. I heard it on Bill O’Reilly and could not find the etymology of the word. I believe it means a coward and sounds as if it could possibly have its origin in the 19th century. Thank you.

    • Hey ronaldmu,
If you want your word or phrase request to really get Marina’s attention, put it in brackets like this: [quakebuttock].
Sorry don’t know the meaning of this word or a suggestion of the origin of this, but I’m just tryin to help you out a little bit, that’s all.

  13. PageDoll says: 64

I just saw the CBS segment and it was great! I could tell you were nervous but you handle it well. It only gets easier. ;-)
Way to sell it at the end, that was classic. Your thinking, “If you’re not going to pitch the book woman, I will” That was rad!

  14. SaGaN_KrK says: 63

    Hello,
I enjoy a lot in linking words in different european languages and looking for their real original meaning.
I wonder how it is that english word [slave] is so similiar to “slav”,
the same as german word sklaven which means both man who is of post-westscythian (just slavic) origin and man who has no freedom.

And I suggest Marie, that you can make comparision (dont know if good word used ;p) of same word in several languages as e.g.:
eng “book”, rus “bukwa”, ger “buch”, pol “buk”.
or why e.g.: eng “tree” rus “driewo” pol “drzewo” are totally different than ger “baum”?

(sry, I havent cyrilic keyboard, then I use polish transliteration)

    Million thanks,
    ( if answered :D :D:D )

  15. SORRY last time I swear. :)

Just now thought of these while watching your videos:

    -[threshold]
    -[it's raining cats and dogs]
    -[don't let the bedbugs bite]
    -[keeping one's eyes peeled (ew)]
    -[speak of the devil]

    Thanks a million!

  16. Also, the old rhymes:

-[Knick knack paddy whack, give a dog a bone! This old man came running home.]
-[Jimmy crack corn and I don't care...]
-[Peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold, peas porridge in the pot nine days old.]

    Thanks!

  17. I’d like to request the phrases [under the weather], [coming out of the closet], [having something "out the wazoo"], [having "blue balls"], and finally [a New York Minute].

    Thanks! :)

  36. berger101 says: 39

Hey Marina, Best of luck with the new book. If you get a chance, here is a word that I was wondering where it came from: [incommunicado]. There is a cool song called “Incommunicado” from a band called Marillion. Thanks! :)

  37. Venomrock67 says: 38

Here’s a few for you Marina, [Oniomania] or [Oniomaniac], describing someone who has an abnormal impulse to buy things or a shopaholic, according to a few people I saw discussing this on a show. The way one Doctor was pronouncing it could’ve sounded like a word describing someone who’s addicted to onions. No origin of the word though.

And how about the sentiment of people around the world including here, who feel that their governments are a [Kakistocracy]!

 If I were in charge I would have (([ANARCHY])) :!:

    Just kidding

Hey everybody, my hot for wordie book SHIPPED TODAY! Isn’t that cool?
Here’s the USPS tracking number: 9102001206939813796314
Please follow it across the country and write me a letter in longhand if it gets lost
    http://www.usps.com/shipping/trackandconfirm.htm

The last time I bought something online it was a used life I bought on eBay. I couldn’t afford a new one. I didn’t pay for air freight and my life burned up in a UPS truck in eastern Kansas. I should have bought air freight. The eBay seller said it was a used Korean life. I thought that would be interesting.

If you see my Hot for wordie book is getting lost please click on my link above and tell me. My Motel 6 yacht will be leaving Monterey Tuesday and sailing to San Simeon. Wednessday it’s Kingman Arizona.

We had the Porsche Turbo up to 150 today at Laguna Seca. I saw Jay Leno yesterday at the Concours d’Elegance. I get to test drive a Bugatti Veyron in LA. Life is good among the Muffy and Buffy set.

My hot for wordie book is supposed to be in Laramie before I get back! Please keep an eye on it. I”ll also look for yours by the side of the road as I drive back.
    Thanks

Let me get this straight. You want me/us to look for your book while you’re in fantasy-land? Don’t you have momentary relapses of rational thought so you can find it yourself?

      Just wonderin’…

      • wyo550 says: 36.1.1

That’s right, I wanted YOU to look for it while I’m in fantasy land- just YOU, nobody else! Thanks so much! Have you seen it? I’ve been moving so fast I can’t even get wifi! Just came Big Sur-San Simeon in the dark with a 2hr ETA in 1:15. The only rational thoughts I’ve had in the past 24 hrs were in the apex of turns 2 (double apex) 4,5,6,8,8a,10 and 11 at Laguna Seca.
The rest (ie 3,9,1,7,etc) were under control and just CRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAZY
Pics on Twit City, click on icon
Thanks again for looking for my book online!

    • Motel 6 yacht, LOL! Those are the best yachts!

Racing at Luguna Seca! Oh I wish I was there again. I have the need for speed.

You’re going to love the book. PageDoll rushed me a copy. It’s a very heavy book for it’s size. I almost needed a fork lift to carry it home. Oh in fact I did use a hand truck, lol! I had other things on the hand truck, but I was too much to carry so I put it on the truck.

How about the word [opinion]? Does it have any relation to [opine]?

I got more to send you, but that’s enough for now.

    Thank you!

  51. i would like to request the phrase [gene pool]
my dad recently lost his job as Parks director for the city we live in. The reason he lost that job was because he wrote “The gene pool could use some chlorine” outside the pool office marque. It was a funny Parks statement that changes every four or five days and he usually receives nothing but compliments for them, however this one got him terminated. Since he’s going to challenge his termination with a Citizens Review i was wondering f maybe you could help us out by determining the origin of this saying “gene pool”

    Thank you in advance,
    Your fan – Steaksauce

Here is a NeRD woRd suggestion that I have been hearing lately:

    [ridonkulous]

    • Capman911 says: 15.1

Hey animalntz, I also left her my suggestion chillaxin for a nerd word on her Twitter account as she has to see all who Twitter her. She is sure to see it there if you have a Twitter account. If not I could leave it for you and tell her it is from you.

      • I started Twitter weeks ago and it seems like I can’t tweet anybody. I go to their twitter page and I don’t see where to write in my tweets. And with these additional twit sites (twitpic, tweetdeck, tweetgrid, or whatever) you have to re-login and other. So, I don’t know, it seems like a complicated thing to understand.

        • You Tweet from your own site at the top of the page. you just add in @capman911 then write your sentence, or if you see a comment you want to reply to out by the side of the comment is a star if you want to favor the comment or a curved arrow which you can click on and look at the top of the page and the person you want to respond to is already in the comment box. The comments are short so you have to keep things kinda short. You can tell if you went over the amount of words the numbers turn red to let you know. If you need any more help let me or PK know and we will be glad to help you .

  61. Capman911 says: 12

Time for bed it’s 2:34 here. See ya.

    • It’s nearly 5am my time. After 14 hours of dealing with issues. I’m beat. It’s my bed time now. I cooked 4 fantastic gourmet burritos and it’s making me sleepy. Oh man I forgot to take pictures again. Oh know I know why. I planned to hire a camera man to film it. A bachelors guide on how to cook for thy self.
      Night night :-)

Oh damn I forgot to watch the video. Oh well, I’ll have to watch it later. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes to download and I don’t want to wait. Youtube needs to work on their compression software. It sucks.

      • rijk says: 12.1.1

15 minutes ? Hope for you thats the HQ video. Maybe an overactive virus-scanner ?

        • Wireless Internet here in Seattle is very poor. Companies are bitching about this and that. They say they want this before they can do that. Arguing who can be in what territory. Excuses that is fueled by greed. That’s all it is.

No, Im using low quality video. Part of the problem also is YouTube poor video compression scheme. There is much better codex out there. Other sites I don’t have too much issue. It’s slow but steady. I haven’t watched Marinas videos in months. :-(

I have a Apple Mac. We don’t use virus-scanners. Not needed. It’s one of my reasons why I use Macs.

          • Oh, wireless, that explains it.

Haven’t watched the video’s in months?
Well she has become terrible at it ;) , think it’s the book-release.You got to do something about it and show her who is the captain of this ship.

        • Yeah you hit the nail on the head with wireless. AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, Clearwire, all are very slow. :x I’m really waiting for WiMax to come out. Portland, Or is using it right now and it’s awesome from what I hear. They say some people are able to get about 6 mbps download speeds.

Yeah, no video in months. I found out it’s really not the file size that is issue but the bit rate is very hard on motherboard video chips and video cards. YouTube knows about this and has purchased a company that will solve this issue. It will also benefit Youtube also for it will reduce the cost of their bandwidth. I freaking knew what the heck I was talking about their video compression scheme sucked.

I don’t think M would listen to me until I get 400 million views and get on TV or the movies. Oh wait, I have been in the movies & TV. Ok I guess I need to work on the 400 million views.

          • That’s a quick response, don’t you need to sleep? (time difference something like 6 hours ?) Must be 5.00 am

Apple chipset not up to the job? I got a cheap intel mobo (d945gclf2) under the tv and the onboard has no problems with it at all. Thought Apple was the bomb for graphic stuff.

Think she listens, but doesn’t do anything with it ;)

        • 4:22 am. The same time the website posts times.

It’s an older power PC chips set. Apple just announced it will no longer support those chip sets. It’s not my computer, its a loaner from a friend. I had spent over a grand buying a new tower but got taken to the bank on the deal. Never received the computer. That’s the last time I use e-bay.

          • 4.22 am, you are the night shift. :) For me its now about 14.00 pm.
E-bay: Damm that sucks. Hope you can trace them.
I only used e-bay once, the rest came from online shops.

        • Normally e-bay can be trusted but it was an odd method of payment system. Apparently because of the recession, the online scammers are pulling out all the stops.
I seem to have the worst luck sometimes. I guess it’s payment for the good luck I used up for saving my ass in dicey situations.

          • Well if you used it up, you should prepare for the worst. ;)

Forgot to ask, but a grand is 1000 $ ?
Maybe a video where the nicknames like grand came from?

        • Yeah it’s money down the tube. Over the years of being screwed out of my money, I’m starting to get numbed about it. Now I just bitch about every penny I spend. :x

          Yes, a [grand] = $1,000 dollars US.
OnlineED: The noun meaning “thousand dollars” is first recorded in Amer.Eng. underworld slang, 1915, from the adj.

Gee, If I keep looking up this stuff I may end up having to buy the same darn books as Marina. IM NOT A PHILOLOGIST! You can’t make me, you can’t make me, you can’t make me. Oh wait, I guess I’m an amateur philologist. I even have a few books already. Oh darn! It’s too late… Resistance is futile hu?

  62. Hs4Mm says: 11

[advice advise - will the origin resolve questions such as: Why 'c' for the noun and 's' for the verb? Why not the other way around? Are they supposed to sound different when pronounced?]

    • neuroway says: 11.1

No. Going to the origin won’t resolve this question. Don’t try to find binary or even boolean logic into word origins. Not even fuzzy logic. This “concrete” or “discrete” world (call it as you wish) is not all black and white. So are the languages in use into it. There are zillions of colours, mixes, nuances and shades. You simply can’t reduce its complexity to binary logic, or you will be a like a poor dogless blind man let loose on Times Square. Think about the architectural difference between a natural brain and an artificial computer. Think about the difference in pattern recognition a computer will do and a human or an animal will do. Two different worlds, so to speak.

BTW, I saw your video. It is very interesting, you raise some catchy points, but you are not a very good looking teacher to be honest. However, a teacher doesn’t need to be good looking to be good, as good looks and teaching skills are completely independent (from each other) assets.

  63. bigbhd95 says: 10

  64. Folks,

I wanted to say here what a great guy pedanticKarl is. Those of you who have been around here awhile know that of the squazillion fans of Marina/HFW I am possibly (probably) the least computer-savvy of us all. Several times I’ve gone to him when I was losing my mind over one problem or another. PK always gladly, patiently tries his best to help me, though I know he has to be laughing his ass off at my ignorance.

Just wanted to say this in front of the HFW Family.

    Thanks, PK. Thanks, Marina.

    •
      Hey Rick,
Thank you for those kind words. I go out of my way to help a lot of people in different ways and it is my greatest pleasure to serve in a capacity that I know best.

Don’t worry, I have never laughed at anyone and it is not that you are ignorant as you said. Ignorance would be not asking for help in the first place. The fact that you chased me down shows that you care and I appreciate and I respect that. Also, you were quite prepared with answers to my questions which means that you did your due diligence which I respect.

It is not about me as I am humbled by your words. As I have said before, I am here to be in service to Marina and the HotForWords community like you who appreciate Marina’s work.

      Thank you.

    • Capman911 says: 9.2

Your right Rick. PK is one of the best in helping people figure out a computer or any problem. So I thank him also for his help on such matters. ;-)

  65. leonard says: 8

    Marina—look for old books :-)

    **[Cultivar]**

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia :-)
A cultivar is a cultivated plant that has been selected and given a unique name because of desired characteristics; it is usually distinct from similar plants and when propagated it retains those characteristics.

The naming of a cultivar should conform to the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants (the ICNCP, commonly known as the Cultivated Plant Code). For this, it must be distinct from other cultivars and it must be possible to propagate it reliably, in the manner prescribed for that particular cultivar, either by sexual or asexual means.

The word cultivar, coined by Liberty Hyde Bailey, is generally regarded as a portmanteau of “cultivated” and “variety”, but could also be derived from “cultigen” “variety”.

The word cultivar is not interchangeable with the botanical rank of variety, nor with the legal term “plant variety”.[1] Cultivars are a sub-set of Bailey’s broader grouping the cultigen, defined as “a plant that has been deliberately altered or selected by humans” (see cultigen for Bailey’s original definition of the cultivar[2], his definitions of the cultigen, and discussion of the current definition of cultigen)…..rAdIO….hAIl hOtfOrwOrds and owls are wise :P AcE’m on the air!!!grow more followers

[melons] a smelling with mix-ups!!! Melons are sweet edible fruits that belong to the gourd family and are divided into two categories: muskmelon and watermelon. Melons have been enjoyed for thousands of years in many countries and are thought to have originated in Persia.

Muskmelon varieties have either netted skin, like cantaloupes and Christmas melons, or smooth skin, like honeydew and casaba melons. Other muskmelons include Spanish, Persian, winter and Crenshaw varieties. All muskmelons contain seeds and have a hollow center with fibrous material. They vary in color, including shades of yellow, pale green, and orange. One variety or another is available year round, but muskmelons are most plentiful in late summer and early fall.

Ahhh, shoveling shit at sunrise… You do that a couple of times and you definately appreciate the finer things. I always thought the hardest job was scraping hog pens. I believe that is where they got the saying:

“If your a boy, it’ll make you a man; if your a man, it’ll kill you.”

Now the SMELLS on the other hand… :???:
