Personally, I think it’s a lot of fun to be provocative, especially when your ‘victims’ are people lacking in passion, imagination, and life. And it’s even more fun to provoke people that deserve it due to bad behavior on their part. I’m a (mostly) retired ubertroll, so I’ve had my fun online provoking people that sorely deserved it. And, although I mainly did it for fun, I have been able to learn a thing or two about human nature along the way. For one, plenty of people are looking to be provoked, and respond quite eagerly to being antagonized. People who are politically partisan are especially easy to provoke and relish a good fight/argument. The secret to successful provocation is to not take yourself or your opponent all that seriously. Indeed, I’ve learned that just about every human being there is should not be taken all that seriously, especially those lacking in humor. If you can’t laugh at yourself, then you are fair game to be made the butt of jokes. Somebody’s got to laugh at you after all… if you won’t do it, somebody like me will.

    LOL, Errin : )

One of the girls on the MGID website looked a bit like my fomer wife’s sister with strawberry blonde hair. she looked a bit stoned on drugs and looked very sexy to me!!!WOW! I guess the assumption was that Sherry was naked. And also had a tender looking young pretty face and some kind of plastic in her hair. I wanted to j*** o** but my mom was in the next room! Be fun to see the real thing!

The scrolling problem can be alleviated with organizing the comments in what I think is called an hierarchy. That is, comments would be listed with the same look and feel as it does now, except the comments to comments (strings) would be organized in folder fashion, easily accessible with (+) and (-) signs located adjacent to the starting comment of the string, as is done in files and folders. Not only would it shorten the list of comments, but it would encourage people to read more of the comments, instead of being intimidated by what seems like an endless list of comments, going on page after page, with the dried bones of forum surfers, strewn along the side of the trail, what remains of those who got lost looking for that one comment they were looking for. (What page was it on?)

Ooops, this comment was intended to be in response to a string further on down the page.

OK.. new comments at the top… I found it confusing as well.. as everything seems to be new comments at the top these days.. my Recent Comments Widget, Twitter, YouTube, etc.. I know that new comments at the bottom seems more “natural” to some.. but it’s tough to scroll through all the comments just to see where the latest conversation is.

I’ll make a poll anyway.. as I was in the process of making one.

  13. Hey Marina how are you?

Agent provocateurs and scapegoats are of the same stuff, but not from the same stock and origin. To the uneducated eye, they appear to be running with the crowd, but in reality, they don’t. Agent provocateurs are trailers, and scapegoats are headers. When an agent provocateur meets a scapegoat, some pretty intense running may occur. Sometimes, they even kiss, but they do it in a very special way.

If you want to request a word you have to put it in square brackets like this: [onomatopoeia]. That way the charming and sensuous Lady Marina will know you are interested in it.

Enjoy the site and order the book if you haven’t already; all of Marina’s fans want to see it on Amazon’s best seller list.

        Work out?

        • What do you mean? Why do my videos have less comments than other videos? Because my audience is actually older than 12 and older people don’t make as many comments as really young people. They also don’t rate as much. My audience tends to watch my videos passively.

        • Rijk says: 55.1.1.2

Maybe they don’t have a site, so isn’t there some kind of way to add the comments on the site to that.

          • Captain Jack, Pedantickarl or Marina could better explain that question, but I don’t think it could be done because of it being two different sites and no way to link the comments. She had tried the voting with the stars and views but I believe YT wouldn’t or couldn’t count them as actually being watched from here to count on her YT site. That is why she puts up the go to YT and watch the video comment and vote. So we need to keep going to YT watching ,commenting and voting for the video then come back here and converse with each other. ;-)

          • @capman911 (55.1.1.2.1)

So if we go to YT, to watch and comment here, but these comments are not counted, than wouldn’t it be simpler to comment on YT. So that part of the site is than redundant? And if that is gone, the biggest student magnet is gone. And what will than become of the site? :???:

          • In reference to 55.1.1.2.2

It is redundant to comment here and then on YT but the comments on YT help with Marina’s overall ratings. I watch the video over here then go to YT and vote and comment and watch the video again so her site gets the views, votes and comments. Then I come back here and hang out with friends and make conversation. Plus here is where Marina takes the word requests and occasionally comments back to us. I wish there was someway the two sites could be combined, but Marina makes her money from YT and its adds.

          •
            Hi Rijk,
The two sites, YouTube and this site have different objectives.

The video is stored on YouTube, and therefore the measure of appreciation, gratitude and recognition of that video is best done over at YouTube as Mike had mentioned. YouTube has different ways of measuring views when viewing an embedded video as the one above versus viewing a video on YouTube.

Also, in some cases, the video may / will play better on YouTube than here. Why? It depends on where the caching servers are located in relation to where you live and in relation to this web site and the origin point of the video.

The objective of this site is to build a community of like minded people who appreciate talking about words in general or topics related to the video title. Of course we also do a some clowning around and have lots of fun. Additionally, there is the Forum where other topics can be discussed.

Giving appreciation to Marina on the videos over on YouTube ensures that she will be doing many more videos.

          • @capman911 55.1.1.2.3, PK 55.1.1.2.4

            I think in pictures ;-)
So YT is the office and the public street while the site is the living-room the walls are made of glass but you can only get in if you register M holds the keys so there is control over the visitors. And occasionally looks around the door to see if we are not tearing her place apart. And believe me I try

Though I don’t get the ad thing, there are ads in the video on the site as well. And even other ads, I thought the site would generate more cause there are more ads? :???:

I wrote on the application that it might be interesting to work undercover as a school teacher in a foreign land or work on a CIA-run radio station. was that why they tried to make me insane in grad school. Why is that only in hq marina?

    • Check Marina’s tweets in the
last week. I think she is going
to stay with HQ vs HD as many
      people have trouble viewing HD
even in HD-std. Most people do
not have a high speed connection
      or their PCs are slow.

      • James says: 49.1.1

Well, I hope she doesn’t hate me for saying this… but that is a totally stupid idea! Whats the point of having $5000 HD camera when you don’t make videos in HD. I don’t think the PC speed is true either, loads of people have computers that can play HD. If peoples computers are slow, it’s their fault, and as for internet connection, I could watch HD when I was on a 1kbps connection… I don’t think that taking a step backwards is a good idea at all. Well, I guess it will change now to ” wow boobs in hq”

        • James, I don’t think Marina is going
to hate you. You are correct it is not
the PC speed but the collective
          maintenance and having the proper
video card. It many cases it is people’s
fault for not defragging and fixing
corrupted files or getting a UPS.
Look at all of the complaints people
have made about their PCs on this site
and the problem of viewing the video.
          For every single complaint there
probably 100s of others having the same
issue. Those people are the silent majority.
I think Marina should try it to see
if views are increased. I think many
of the other Youtubers have been
          using HQ.

      • Rijk says: 49.1.2

What HD, all I see is a HQ button so where is the HD? Could you post a printscreen? :???:

        • Hi Rijk,
          Goto Youtube.com/hotforwords
watch one of the videos from last
week and before. Notice the HD
button on the vcr controls bar
          below the video.
When the HD button is black the video
plays in Normal Quality. When you
click the HD button it turns red
and then the video plays in full HD
          quality.

By the same token, when you watch
the Agent Prov video, you will see
HQ black which is normal quality
and HQ red is High Quality.

      • Rijk says: 49.1.3

I don’t like it, but I agree with James. Under the tv I got a comp with a cheap mobo (dual atom processor) and use the onboard video and yes it takes 5 times longer for the video to load, but once loaded it plays it flawless and the picture is so much sharper than HQ. Keep the HD. ;-)
I noticed that on the site they are always in HQ so by keeping the HD you got 3 choices.

        •
          Hi Rijk,
I don’t think that is correct about the 3 choices.
There are only 2 choices at any given time.

          HD-black (normal quality)
          HD-red (HD quality)

Go check out the previous HD video on this site
called Going Stir Crazy and watch it. Click the HD button.

          – or –

          HQ-black (normal quality)
          HQ-red (HQ quality)

Check out the above video. Play it and look at the HQ button. It is either red or black. Two quality modes.

Check out my comment over at the Forum in the Technology Help Desk for my graphs that I did a while back. Run your own tests — and especially look at your own graphs when viewing the video here versus on YouTube and watch the graphs when in normal quality versus the HD or HQ quality.

Yes, you may wait 5 times longer for a video to download, and for everyone of you, there will be 10-20 people that will not wait, which is a loss of viewership.

          • You are right, I thought the site showed HQ and YT HD they both show HD  YT loaded slow yesterday evening, maybe a lot more were watching it and there are less watching it at the site.
Tested it (phishing video) now, site 3 min 12 sec, YT 3 min 15 sec. So there is no difference in loading time.

Testing loading time of HQ versus HD is more difficult cause there is not one video in both HQ and HD. ;-)

I’m from the Pittsburgh area, and we call all carbonated drinks from a can [pop] and much of the rest of the US calls these same drinks [soda]. Can you tell me where these words came from and who is using the terms correctly?

    • goatomen says: 46.1

we call em cold drinks in the south

    • Hi donnalee, I’m from the Pittsburgh area, too. I’ve lived elsewhere ever since I was old enough to get out on my own, and one thing I found was that most people think we folks from Pittsburgh talk with a very strange accent. Does that make us “wrong?” Nope. Just different.

According to my linguistics instructor, there’s no “right” or “wrong” with these kinds of terms. They’re just [colloquial]. People in different places use different terms, and quite often have different pronunciation habits as well.

For example, do you normally use the word “bucket,” or do you say “pail” instead? Many people who live south of the Mason-Dixon line tend to say “pail.” Would you fill up your bucket (or pail) from a “faucet,” or from a “spigot?” We always used the word “spigot” when I was a kid, but now I call the same thing a “faucet” or a “tap” because that’s what the people around me are more apt to understand. That’s all there is to it.

On the West Coast, more people seem to use the word “soda” to describe what I used to call “pop.” These days, I usually just refer to them all as “soft drinks” or by their brand name.

In southern California, many people pronounce the word “insurance” with the accent on the first syllable, like “INCH-rance” instead of stressing the second syllable “in-SURE-ance,” the way I’m used to hearing it.

There’s a lot of variation in word usage and pronunciation from one locale to another in almost any language. That’s one of the things I found interesting about the study of linguistics.

    • Damiana says: 46.4

I’m in Colorado and have always called it “pop”, but many of my co-workers, who are mostly from other areas, answered “soda” in a worktime poll. Oo

Appointed director of the Bureau of Investigation — predecessor to the FBI — in 1924, he was instrumental in founding the FBI in 1935, where he remained director until his death in 1972. Hoover is credited with building the FBI into a large and efficient crime-fighting agency, and with instituting a number of modern innovations to police technology, such as a centralized fingerprint file and forensic laboratories. Hoover posthumously became an increasingly controversial figure. Because after that time heavy weapons were invented so, these small kingdoms and feudal places could not be able to defend themselves anymore. By that time, empires such as Spain, Portugal, England and some other empires like these started to become powerful because they have those heavy weapons. After these days small kingdoms and the bourgeoisies in those feudal areas and big kingdoms should find another way to earn money and goods. Mankind have always wanted more and more so this ambition makes people to find another way. So, they started discoveries all around the world in order to find valuable things, valuable places and shortcuts to Asia so as to trade directly with those Asian countries. By starting discoveries Spain and Portugal get stronger day by day because in Spain and Portugal the monarch was directly helping the voyagers by giving them ships and crews so these voyagers were going to the ocean-sea in order to discover the new world. from MEGA

Normally, this is not my kind of music, but a cousin of mine share this video on Facebook. And this guy can definitely play a 12-string guitar in this instrumental:
    John Butler Trio – Ocean
I later found out that they also play the familiar “Better Than” song I heard a few years back.

    • Well, make that 11-strings… I guess.

      • muggins says: 34.1.1

That was good playing. Thanks for that animaltaz. 11 strings and it still sounded great. Last year, I was looking at my 12-string guitar, it was an old, beat up Guild 02, which had some kind of manufacturing flaw and it sold for cheap. I picked it up used for really cheap. Later, I was talking with an old black man who looked at me through bloodshot eyes and asked what kind of 12-string guitar I was buying strings for. I told him. “Oh.”, was his answer. “Yeah”, I admitted “it doesn’t have much of a sound.” So, I was looking at this thing and I decided, since i preferred classical guitars as far as their wider neck (more gap between the strings), I decided to string this Guild with only 6 strings. Later on, I heard of other people doing this to their 12-string guitars. After stringing this dog of a guitar with 6 strings, I suddenly had a steel string guitar that had the wide set that I was comfortable with, and the guitar had an improved sound with only six strings. Since then, I’ve done it on 2 other quality 12-strings, and had to retire my Takamine f312s, the guitar I’d never thought I’d pack away.

    • Now that’s talent! Some excellent playing and fingerwork, whether it’s eleven or twelve strings. Thanks animalntaz!

      • Hey that’s an eyeopener!

Yeah, I think it’s a Russian site too

haven’t still figured out how to get a translator. :?:

        • Hey Venomrock67, what browser are you using? I use FireFox and it has different plug ins you can down load free to set it up any way you want to. Here is a picture of how I have mine set up. The translator also adds itself to the collum when you right click your mouse on a page.

          http://i28.tinypic.com/34no23d.jpg

          • Hey Capman, to answer your first question i’m using safari as my browser and it’s a laptop setup and I don’t have a mouse. I noticed on the pic of your setup you have a google translator setup at the top of your page on one of your bars I believe. I looked at my plugins didn’t see anything about a translator (maybe it could be somewhere else on my computer) so I attempted a couple of times to find one to download but safari informs me that it doesn’t recognize it. Was using a computer at the library for awhile which ran on windows xp. I definitely notice subtle differences between the two but I think i’m getting used to it, but i’m still stumped on this.

other thing I notice I seem to be not getting reply notifications from HFW on my e-mail account. :???:

          • You said your not getting replies from HFWs in your email. Is it a reply from Marina herself when she answers you back from here on a comment or from her messaging service? I noticed the last two replies Marina sent me from here after I asked her a question I didn’t receive a reply in my email either. I just noticed them when I went back and reread the older comments to catch up on the new replies. I do get replies from her when I email her direct but not from these comments.
Ask Pedantickarl about the Safari browser and see if he can help you as far as a translator. You can always use Babelfish.com or look up Google Translator and just add it to you favorites list. http://translate.google.com/?hl=en#

          • I used to get reply notifications from whoever is replying to your comments here under the lessons videos.(it isn’t like I get a lot of them) But like you when I’m re-reading older comments is when I notice them. It could also be my e-mail account because ever since I got the setup i have now my e-mail hasn’t been working right, it’s a hotmail account. You know when you try to send a message to people you know and you want to put a link in there, I can’t put a working link in there, not even pasting a url will work, but i recently set up another e-mail account on comcast.net and everything I used to do before i can do there. I did get a couple of replies from her a while ago both from the comments area and when I contacted her about about a tech issue from the CONTACT BUTTON. was just wonderin that’ all

And? Tobi, did you have a look at Marina’s sisters?

  57. Throughout My Years I have heard “They’re” and Their used so often.
When I look at the spelling of “Their” it really looks nothing like the others, Which confuses me.
    How did this word come to be :?: :!: :?: :!: :!:

    Dear Marina,
You are beautiful, as always. Tell me, why is skimpy lingerie is called “hot”? They usually have very little material, so it can’t feel hot when you wear them. Besides, you would look “hot” to me whether you were wearing skimpy lingerie, or not. I think it would be more accurate to say skimpy lingerie is “cool.”
As a professional, University-trained, and esteemed philologist, wouldn’t you agree? :?:
Your sense of fashion is a bit different from mine. Why would you wear a baseball cap along with skimpy lingerie and a silk robe? Do you wear a baseball cap when you go to bed? Most of us wear baseball caps to shade our eyes so we can better see the baseball.
(So, please don’t tell me you wear a baseball cap to shade your eyes from your “p0rn lights” when you film yourself in skimpy lingerie while on your bed!)

    Hi Marina.

I am just back in the UK from my trip to LA and Vegas. My Vegas trip got me thinking about the word [jackpot]. Sadly i didn’t win any jackpots while i was out there but i am interested in the origin of the use of [jack] in the word. In [jackpot] the jack is indicating something good as in winning the maximum prize. But in the phrase [jack of all trades, master of none] jack indicates someone who is merely average (or worse) at some sort of skill rather then being specialised one particular thing. So i was wondering if there was any link between the word [jackpot] and the phrase [jack of all trades, master of none]?

    Thanks Marina!
