Sexual Words in the Dictionary
Warning… the article I link to is NSFW! So do not read it if you are easily offended!!
Slate.com did a great piece on why it’s so difficult to put sexual words in the dictionary. First there were “moral” decisions by the creators of dictionaries, then there were legal reasons! Believe it or not, even though the “F-word” first appeared in a dictionary in 1598, it then disappeared until the 1960s! That is one of the reasons why the “F-word” and many other sexual words have so many false stories of their origins!
Anyway… I was thinking about making a few videos on YouTube describing the origins of these words. People seem to use these words quite a bit on YouTube these days, so I don’t think I would be censored this time around.
Some of the origins are really funny.. and some of the false origins are even funnier. So I think I could have fun making these videos.

That’s what I think about this.
Not just the death of Billy Carter. I was a private in the Army in 1977-1979 and scored genius on the ASVAB GT test.
But also in the summer of 1993 I had another dream suggesting Richard Nixon was having me threatened in my neighborhood as I shopped at the 7/11 or walked around to wherever. You knowm I had my first 9/11-related dream in the July of 1988 and I reported it to the local airport. An Eastern jet liner with engines all ablaze was hurtling towards downtown toledo. and I asked the FAA in a letter if commercial jets flew over my neighborhood. But this was 1988 and the way I interpreted it was that someone with a Stinger missile had shot down an Eastern Airline jet over Toledo. Two significant dreams in July like that. I believe myself to be a small-time Christian Prophet-not a big one like Ezekiel or Isaiah!
lately some nice-looking russian girl wanted to come to Toledo to be with me; but she needed $1600.00 to get here. A there was one before that like that. but my mom does not want any strange women living with her. And I do not have my own apartment. My grandma from romania used to tell me that american women were too spoiled and had it too easy here. so, my problem had to do with my not having enough money or my own place. The other year I heard on Ed Buggs on independant TV 48 that now american high school standardized tests are 49th in the world. But you do need educated poeple to run the country. Maybe america will go back to the stone age!!!

Aberdeen has had, how should I say, a colored past. It was home of many brothels back in its day. Now the only remnants of it is a bar with mannequins standing in the window. You would think a city that is currently know for logging and now bio-fuel would not have any issue with the f-word, but they do. I’m really surprised that still offends people. Yet, TV shows use words that I think are even
worse than the f-word. You know those words used as a substitute. Look, I’m even substituting the word with ‘f-word’ just so I don’t offend someone to the point they send me messages or emails express their displeasure of me using the f-word. I swear people still live in the dark ages sometimes.
I think George just left another clue.
While I’m not one for censorship, I do wonder about the wisdom of making HotForWords lessons about words that not everybody deems appropriate or polite to discuss. While it is Marina’s videos/website and I’ll support any decision she makes regarding such, I will put this forth…
The educational value of the HotForWords videos is one that should be shared with as broad an audience as possible. They are also an excellent way for children to learn a thing or two about words and their origins. If a lesson is going to be about a sexual word or other ‘bad’ word (according to social norms), then that lesson is not going to reach as broad an audience as possible, and is especially going to be deemed inappropriate for children. I’m not sure if that quite vibes well with the mission statement of HotForWords.
I tend to liken Marina’s educational videos to some of the educational programming I’ve seen in the past on public television. PBS actually has a wide range of educational snippets that are only a few minutes in duration. HotForWords would fit right in. I guess because I view her educational videos that way, I would prefer that they stay ‘child-friendly’ and not be about sex, curse words, etc.
Whatever the case, the bottom line to me will always be whatever Marina chooses to pursue as both an artist and an educator. If that’s a direction you feel like going, then I say go for it. Best wishes to you no matter what course you decide to pursue, teach!

I had found THE SLATE by accident and a story about Ken Lay the Enron excutive who died of stress heart attack during his trial for swindling Enron and its stockholders. I had remarked on that story that I have a heart condition. But th MD’s have varying opinions as to what is wrong with me-Old heart attack saiid one, Enlarged left heart said anorhte, Edema said one, Congestive Heart Failure said another. Lately the man said the muscle in the left side of my heart is weak. I asked during one of the cardiac stress tests when they inject me with a radiocative tracer if my heart condition or heart attack could be brought on by tooo much stress. And he said it could. I guess that is what did Ken Lay in. It is always fun to see the rich greedy swindlers get put on trial!

I have to say this. The F-word is (one) of my favorites. I’m not suggesting use it all the time. In fact I think I only use it about once a month on average. Some month more than others. I think the reason is that I say it with so much passion. I use is as an expression of something painful or shocking. Like when you slam your knuckles on the drive shaft of a 390 ton ship because the crescent wrench slipped off the nut. Sometimes even then the f-word is just not enough. That’s when one need many different words. The only other time I use the f-word is for sexual reasons which I don’t think it would be appropriate for this site.
Reason I’m commenting here is I have a question. Has anyone head of the funny audio recording of that guy with a genital manly voice that gives the definition and uses of the f-word? I heard it many years ago and I have the recording on one of my hard drives but I don’t know which one it is. I’m thinking one of you guys knows where to find a link.

I forgot how versatile the f-word was. What I find more interesting is when it’s used in different ways it’s perfectly understood. It’s like the word has taken on a new level of definition. More like a punctuation of a sentence.

If in doubt, you can always flag a video as containing mature content. People on YouTube don’t do that enough.

Yes it’s a big risk. Sometimes you win and many times you loose. That’s the risk pioneers have to live with. The sad thing is we never hear of the stories of the pioneers that have failed. Their stories died with them. I think their stories are more important. They teach us what didn’t work. Ugghhh, go over the international date line to skip a day?
Yeap! There was like 4 crew members on the battleship USS Missouri that lost their birthdays. This was a serious issue for us believe it or not. Here’s why. When the military would make our life miserable in some way, we would console each other in saying, “What is the worst they can do to you, take your birthday away?” The day we first crossed that line we stopped using that question.
Thats wild! That would suck when they take your birthday away. I remember how it used to feel when you didn’t get any mail, but your birthday?! That is too much, I say!
There was always some clown getting 6 or 7 letters every mail call and your just standing there…
My last birthday really sucked.
I had made plans and they all fell apart. Not good idea to have a b-day on a Saturday. Even my back up plan failed. To top it off I nearly went to the hospital for a SUV driver hit me when I was walking across the street. Well it was like a tap, but the suv did make contact with my body. 
What I feared the most was if my toes were going to be squished. Later that evening, I ended up eating dinner at a burger joint for my b-day. I should have been crossing the international date line on that day. 
Regarding the risk — as you point out, YouTube appears to allow all sorts of videos. And putting up a video under “education” would definitely allow such content — but it is true that YT would show it to “adults only”.
What about approaching YouTube before releasing this category of videos and discussing this matter?
Another option: for the big O, she put an edited version on YT, and an unedited version at the sponsor’s site. Would GoD’y be too expensive to host the un-edited videos — or is bandwidth needed to host videos already included in the service she already has? How many such videos would there be?
(Aside: The only ad I am seeing now is the horizontal one at the very top of the page. The square one below the “Recent Posts” and the tall one to the left of the twitpics are absent — only the blue background shows. And I have yet to meet George.)

I’m not a Youtube expert like Marina is, but I will try my best to answer your suggestions.
Yes they allow all sorts of videos but it’s different for those who are on the partner program. Advertisers don’t like to be associated with such content next to their ads. Worst case Marina would have to pay for the bandwidth for showing the video. Since I believe it would be a very popular video that could cost a bundle.
Yes she could post it as adults only like many videos are.
Not sure about approaching YT about the matter. Her support person is not very well versed in such matters. I don’t she has any contacts to people higher up.
I don’t she would need to put an edited version on her YT page. Though as an option she does have a second YT account.
There are other sites that host videos that she could choose but there is no need to do so. GoDaddy would not be the best choice for such a thing. Marina doesn’t use GD for hosting nor would it be cost effective. It would cost her 10s of thousands of dollars to do such a thing and would not be able to recoup the expense. It’s best to only use YT for such a lesson.
(She is still working on the site. She’s always tweeking the site from time to time but the major changes I think are done for now. Did you set up an appointment to see George? He is very busy and you must schedule an appearance. Oh wait, there he is >)

I once was in the hospital for an examination. Won’t go into detail here. But I was there all morning. During the morning different nurse would com in to get something out of the room. And they all kept coming back to check on me.
At the end of the morning there where nine different nurses checking on me.

My BFF just got out of the hospital from an auto accident. I think I mentioned it somewhere on this site. Anyways it was a 3 car collision and he happened to be in the line of fire when the 3rd car hit him and knocked him about 10-15 feet. They had to do some work on his jaw and some other cuts. Funny thing is he owns 3 cars and for some reason he decided to walk to a store instead of driving. Oh the reason for the accident, girl was texting on her phone.

A neighbor woman explained how she dealt with her children when they used profanity. She calmly asked the what the the offending word meant. If One did not know, the child would have to look the word up in the dictionary and put the word in a sentence in proper context, then read it to One’s mother. That usually solved the issue, as if One was embarrassed to say it to Mother, One should not use the word in public. What is a child to do if One cannot find the word in a dictionary?
And what did they do with the children who were NOT named One?

Whether one likes it or not, people seem to be intrigued about vulgar words. Some because it’s taboo, others because someone mentioned an expression in passing and curiosity kicked in.
Nowadays one just types the said word into google and hey presto the whole shebang is laid bare. You don’t have to be a cunning linguist or have multiple shots on goal to get the fascination with vulgar words.
I don’t think anyone has actually taken the time to delve into the origins of these sexually implicit words and it will be very interesting to see how you approach making the videos. But then you are HotForWords,; you have never disappointed, as yet, in your explanation.

but i digress – whether you intend to investigate sexually-charged words, sexual actis or sexual fetishes, you likely will turn off a portion of your audience should you become to implicit.

I still have the uncensored video version and just watched it again. You did an outstanding job on that video and it is much better than watching the censored version which detracts from the lesson.
I have a ton of stories to tell regarding the use and fascination with vulgar words. For example, what is the first thing everyone asks about when they find out that someone’s first language is not English. Everyone wants to know how to say certain swear words in that other language.
I think a lot of people are confused or not comfortable in the discussion of certain words in the context of an educational setting. Many people make the mistake of thinking that the vulgar words themselves have power to affect people, when in reality it is each individual that brings a charged spirit to the words coming
from their own background. Someone who has never heard a particular vulgar word will have no reaction to it.
So, to that extend Marina, I recommend that you make those videos, referred to the article above as sexual words and I can’t wait to see them.

you’re fortunate to have the experience in language that you’ve received. i long for that. i was married to a canadian (until illness took him way too young) who had been raised about 60km north of montréal and in the laurentian mountains of québec. very french, though québeçois habitant french. he grew up speaking english, but learned the language working construction while going to university. he didn’t like to speak french, though, not even during lovemaking.. so i didn’t become fluent, though it seems i should have.

I am gonna pick up drawing by hand, i really suck at it. And it will help my career. Right now i do the drawings by computer. The drawings are of buildings, but I am gonna start with portray. graphic design is a wide field covering visual arts: web design, advertising materials/logos, publishing design (book/cd/dvd cover art), etc. i work for a newspaper designing ads. it’s not the most impressive aspect of the field, but i still love it. it’s like being in art class all day, except for the stress of deadlines and sales representatives. i’m working on mastering web design next.

Had the first art-class last evening. We worked with charcoal. First time i used it. The first we had to make where straight lines. Mine were pretty organic. Than we got our first trick, don’t use the charcoal as a pencil, but place it flat on the paper. It worked : )
Than draw different objects (2D) only try to make them scale 1: 1
We ended up with drawing a cup. Although it feels more like starting with drawing and than ending with painting.
At the end my hands where pretty black. : )

hey alex.. great article by geoffrey pullum. i wish he had discussed p-stranding. i was taught that p-stranding is grammatically incorrect, so whenever i hear someone say, “where is the book at?”, i cringe. why not just say, “where is the book?”..
the internet grammar of english says that prepositions typically come before a noun: ‘at home’, ‘to school’, ‘with pleasure’. but ‘typically’ still means there’s exceptions. maybe i was taught wrong.. :/

in german, it’s pretty strict. a preposition P followed by a noun phrase NP forms a prepositional phrase PP.
the reason that the resulting phrase (from P + NP) is a PP and not a NP is that P governs the following NP, or P gorverns the (grammatical) case of the following NP respectively.
Ps can follow NPs. but since PREposition suggests that it comes before the NP, those are pretty often called postpositions. (same difference, though, regarding government of the NP.)
so, maybe try to look at them at postpositions that have lost direct contact with the NP that belongs to them, but they still can see them. something like that.

No, we are not working of the picture silly, there are more pictures, if you click on the arrow on the right you get to see them. All the pictures you see is her. She was there, had here hair in a knot, like the last picture where she stands on the toilet. On Wednesday he already said it was gonna be nude modeling, could be male or female.
First we just had to look and without looking at our paper draw the outer line of her body. After a few minutes she changed position.
And you had to start over, never got to finish one outer line-drawing. In my drawing, her feet looked more like those of a frog.
Later i found out that this was just to warm up the brain in relation to your arm/ hand. (like stretching before sports, etc)
It was charcoal again. Think its the easiest material to work with so that’s probably why we use it. That’s also why we had a well-trained model so the lines were straight and light and shadow where easier to make.
This time we started with making the entire paper black and then erase / soften the lighter areas. In total she held the position for about an hour. Could really feel the mussels in my arm, we had to draw with a stretched arm.
Up close mine didn’t look at all like anything, let alone, a human, but form a distance the brain fills in the blanc’s so it starts to look like something.
There where seven of us this time, i was the only guy. Isn’t that strange?
All black hands once again, some with black smudges on there faces, when you have those black hands you suddenly become aware of the fact that you touch your head/ face a lot.
Washing the hands downstairs, and back up again, you walked again a wall of heat, if you where up there for a while you didn’t notice it that much, but a little time out of it made out aware of it. The heat was for the model to stay warm.
Loved model drawing even more than traditional drawing, we had more freedom. Wish you could have been there, think you would really enjoy art-class too.

I wanna learn to throw clay on a pottery wheel. watercolor painting appeals to me, too. love that. Sounds just like my dad and sister, bet there is some talent in you. So google, and get away from the computer sign up and let me know what class you follow. Although, if you want a male model, sculpting would sound to be more on the mark, the other one sounds more like vases, etc. Oil-painting, thats what i am gonna do next week, at least that’s what he told me.

The model wasn’t nude. The lady’s where screaming for his pants (kidding), just his under-where . We started with a box and than take pieces of the box to make the rough shape, than make the dark parts, eye-sockets, little ridge under the mouth, etc and added and softened the shadows. At the end you could actually make up a face. Not the face of the model, but a totally different one : )

no, i haven’t signed up for pottery classes, yet. i’m doing freelance design in the evening and don’t have time right now. plus, this week is even tougher: the editor’s mother (of the newspaper i work for) died and i’m designing the ‘celebration of life’ materials. so i was at work an hour late this evening and i’m going into work an hour early in the morning. it’s an honor to have been chosen to create the designs. i know exactly what i’m going to do, too. which is nice. that’s not always the case. don’t fret, i’ll look for a class on pottery. : )
your portraiture class sounds fascinating, except for the guy still being clothed. wtf. the female model undresses, but the guy doesn’t? sounds unfair and sexist.. lol! j/k. if it’s portraiture you’re concentrating on the head and shoulders, i know. : P

Monday was the traditional one. i was the only one from last week, four new ones. In the beginning they all wanted to do the experimental class.
He had set up the place for one experimental and five traditional students. so he had to make a new setup. after 15 minutes it was don, he went down to grab something (forgot what it was) and they started joking what i had to draw ( a little cardboard box)
In experimental it doesn’t really matter what you do, you work from your mind. The traditional one has guidelines so he can teach / guide you more. Before he came back i was done talking and all but one (she already took this course last year) wanted to do the traditional class. Don’t know if he was happy with me, cause he had to build a hole new setup.
Photography is a hobby of yours, right? Yesterday in the morning there where the most beautiful long shadows and fog near the ground. How do i need to set up the camera, long shutter, or big lens opening? Never seen it before, would those art-classes change the way i see things.

yeah, it was a really big recognition. very cool, except for the circumstances. i worked with the family most of the day to make sure that all was right. they loved the design.. and it did turn out really nice. if you’re interested i’ll convert the files into .jpg’s and show you what i did. the biggest relief was that they loved my original design and i didn’t have to do a re-design. ~whew~ little bit of a long, grueling day, so this may not be very long tonight. liked your curiosity pic. : )

hmm.. i’ve considered freelance, but i’m so not into the business aspect of running my own business. all that paperwork and accounting. it would take me away from the creative end of my profession or too much so. i think running my own design business would bleed some of the joy out of what i do. still, never say never.

i love hearing about your art class. it fascinates me. also makes me think of taking design and/or art classes because i know it would only increase my creativity. oh, and i want to take web design courses because i need to develop that aspect of my ability. so, you inspire me. and no matter if your instructor was or was not pleased with your choice. you have the right to make that choice and not be concerned about any inconvenience it may be to the instructor. he’s getting paid (and probably well), so i’d shake that off.
i love photography, but without seeing the specific light conditions it’s difficult to say. i say: experiment. try the same shot with many different set-ups.. try the long shutter speed (do you have a tri-pod?) and try the different apertures to see what works. just try to work fast before the lighting changes so that your experiment is a good one. in time you’ll develop an instinct. some of my best shots were taken on the fly.. had to react fast and just focus to get the shot. now with photoshop we can manipulate images in so many ways. it’s not like when photography was old school and any or all corrections or manipulations of an image were only in the darkroom. we’re spoiled now, which is actually nice. the one exception to this might be if an image is way underexposed and there’s not much image to work with. but even then the image might be ‘teased’ out.

The story:
The young couple get a daughter. When she grows up she Kennedy is making his we go to the moon speech. She finds it fascinating and wants to tell the world about it. She attends the school of journalism. And joins a newspaper. In her live she makes reports about a lot of different things both in nature as in politics and everything in between. When she is old and wise she looks back at her live and all the events that took place during that time-period.

you did fairly well. celebration of life is a nicer way of saying funeral or memorial service. the pics are all of the same lady taken throughout her lifetime. the masthead (newspaper header) is in honor of her having been the editor for something like fifty or more years. the top right photo is her at her desk as an editor. the top left is her and her husband looking out over the town of durango many, many years ago (the town has changed a lot since that pic was taken). the middle left photo is her and her husband in a meeting with john f. kennedy discussing newspaper’s role in an issue he was concerned with at the time (not sure which issue). the bottom left picture was taken shortly after they purchased the newspaper in 1951 and became the editors. the bottom right is her as a child of about six years old. i’ve been with the newspaper for three years and didn’t get to meet her as she was already in her 80’s by that time and not the acting editor, so she very rarely came into the workplace (or not at all as far as i know). I know, though, that she was an amazing lady.. awe-inspiring. i should have added more explanation, but i was at work and trying to leave the message for you quickly. sorry to put you out on a limb.. :/
yes, it’s going to be difficult to re-create the conditions of that early morning with the fog. do you often have foggy mornings? i’d have to go deeper into the mountains for the fog most mornings and even then it wouldn’t be every morning. i’m rusty on some of this, but i think a smaller aperture will give you greater depth of field..
did you get distracted and forget to zip up? lol! sounds like she totally got an eyeful.. and she liked what she saw. Oo

Photograph, i got to try. But it’s not sunny anymore : ( and it needs to be on a Saturday or a Sunday. And then the question is will i be awake in time to make the shot and is the sun cooperative and will it be a bit foggy. then try the shutter time. The light is morning sunlight when its just peeking over the horizon. It still has an orange glow.
My feeling tels me long shutter small aperture would be best.

Picture this: i had just been to the toilet. Walked throw the corridor. The corridor was completely empty except for a girl walking in the opposite direction. when she is about 10 meters away from me all of a sudden a big smile and i mean a really big smile appears. I look back to see what’s behind me. nothing. look towards her she is still smiling, not looking at my face. We pass each other. i look back to see what she was looking at. and can’t see anything that would have made her smile. Ten i look at myself.
i see i had forgotten to put my fly up. And knew what she was looking at.

That day scars me too. Both my parents are still alive. Although my dad has become older. Those moments always point you towards what is really important in live.
I can still remember, the day i drove on the road and a truck came towards me with some kind of haze behind it. We past each-other in a curved part of the road. i was on the outside, so the haze was going in my direction. Then there was the noise and my windscreen looked like it had been raining. A little further i could stop to check it. It wasn’t water or something like that, the haze turned out to be little stones. i was really angry and upset because of this.
The next week i got a phone-call from my mother, my dad had a cerebral infarct, got to the hospital, seeing him laying in the bed, than he was there and then he was gone. Like you fall asleep but then quickly in a timespan of a minute. It was a question if he was gonna make it through the night. He did and made a remarkable recovery.
All of u sudden i couldn’t care less for the windscreen of the car.

Although i have had the camera for years (dec. 2002, dsc s85 so nothing fancy) , never really used the option of manual shutter, etc always the automatic. Got to read the manual to figure out what it does on the different settings. Just tried something on the camera.
i dragged my ass out of bed this morning to take the picture i am not a photographer, you wanting to see it made me get up, otherwise i would have stayed in. it was a bit later, so not the red sun, and also in the beginning the sun was hiding behind the clouds, but i did get three good shots but the shadows are a lot shorter. Tried to make myself as small as possible.
great clip from “dead like me”. i’ve never seen that show, but thinking you’ve got me hooked I saw the two series last year on comedy central Missed the pilot and episode one, but saw the second episode and i was hook. I loved this show. To bad they only made two series. And later a movie, but that, to me didn’t quite cut it.
Capman911 loved the series as well, so maybe he can point you where its best to see it. got the series and movie on dvd, just had to have them.

Last week i found out that in graphic design you sometimes rotate the text upside down to get the spacing between the letter right, right? We do that in art class with a mirror to look at the object and the drawing, most of the times with the mirror they look better.
Just saw my drawing of a clay head, asked for the original to be in the photo as well, think it’s the first time he did put the original in the picture. looks better than the portrait i did the week before.
i would have showed it to you, but someone just twisted my arm, threw a big water-bottle at me than smacked me and to top it of broke my arm with arm-wrestling, so sorry i am incapacitated to put it on line.

how recently did you move to New Zealand? sounds awesome. it’s so beautiful there. we still have very distinct seasons here (global warming.. true or not?). last year within a three week period we got something like 12 feet (sorry, i don’t know what the conversion would be) of snow! holy hella. so yeah, we get lots of snow here in the colorado mountains. : )

hmm.. i haven’t experienced that. graphics programs are equipped to work with the leading (spacing between rows of sentences) and the kerning (spacing between letters) so i’m not sure. can you describe it more? sometimes i’ll place text on a diagonal or perpendicular to make it interesting.. cool that you’re using a mirror for imaging in your art class. i can see how that would help with perspective, light, etc. awesome.

i’m amazed that we get more snow than you. if you’re really green with jealousy just remember the digging out of the car which has to be done even if i’m not going to drive. my car is a mitsubishi eclipse and doesn’t do well in the snow. when it’s really snowy and icy i leave it parked and take alternate transportation or walk. it’s rear wheel drive, but just not heavy enough. but it’s paid off, runs well and i love it.. so not trading it in for an SUV.
your graphic design classmate’s perspective is interesting.. still thinking about that one. not quite sure how he tied it in with the mirror. no big. don’t want you on the edge of frustration trying to explain it.

i thought you might have meant sea climate. is there more rain in winter than snow? monsoon season here is late summer/early fall.. then, with winter, the rain turns to snow and it’s extremely cold.
i googled volvo 440 and it looks nice. my eclipse is a 1996, so it’s not even close to new. my car looks almost exactly like this eclipse minus the sunroof. same color even. i want to drop a new/re-built engine and transmission into it within a year instead of buying new. too bad it does so badly on snowy/icy roads. but it’s only about three months out of the year that road conditions are tough to deal with, so it’s not so bad.
i really liked the beatle’s tune mother nature’s son. guess i’ve never heard the white album all the way through because i hadn’t heard that one. thought you might like the incubus tune. love that band.. drive. queens of the stone age, too: eins zwei drei vier 3’s and 7’s

glad you’re liking dexter. i got drawn into it a couple of years ago. it’s way dark and morbid, but i like the characters. and it intrigues me that, yes, he’s a serial killer, but he only takes out killers with no conscience that get away with killing others. strange and twisted, i know. supernatural and its story lines are kinda out there.. but somehow they make it plausible. it’s just for fun anyway.
thanks for the pic depicting your volvo. it does look nice. my dad tried to talk me into purchasing a volvo at one point, but i was already too far in love with my eclipse and there was no chance i was trading it in. besides, i’d just replaced the head gasket at a cost of $650/US and i wasn’t giving up the investment of having just completed that major engine work. lol!@ 1996 seeming like new to you. that’s funny. it’s running very well, so the plan to drop in a new engine/transmission is for the future. it will set me back, but it’ll also be like having a new car without the new car price. and the new engine/transmission come with a 3-year guarantee which i consider a good investment.
sounds like you have a much nicer climate than we have here. though, we do have something like 345 days of sunshine each year. even if it’s a rainy or snowy day the sky usually clears and the sun comes out. i’d love to see holland. all of europe, actually. but the way i want to tour, it would take me 6-8 months. lol! i’m totally serious.

luckily, they don’t use brine or salt on icy/snowy roads here. so corrosive to cars. my car is thirteen years old and has no rust. the body is in great shape which is partly why the new engine/transmission is a good investment. seems to me that even if brine/salt weren’t used on the roads where you live, just the proximity to the sea would cause rust.. but i’ve never lived in a coastal region, so i’m guessing. Oo
lol! the 6-8 months of touring would be all of europe.. so much i want to see. it would seriously take me that long to see everything and to just breathe and take it all in.. : )

i’ve seen cars with rust in the wheel-arches. damn rust, so highly corrosive and structurally damaging.. so not good. at times i’ve wished to live in a more humid region (i like rain), but not when i consider my car. the pacific northwest (washington state, maybe oregon) has been calling my name for years. though it’s not likely i’ll move as graphic design positions are very competitive there (far too many graphic designers in that area). but i would love to go..
i meant autumn. arrrgh. it was early morning, i’d just woken and was trying to reply quickly before going to work. it’s only early into winter weather and i already have spring on my mind. lol! we got a fair amount of snow today and there’s more forecast for tonight and tomorrow.. fun. :/
i didn’t notice that the 10 drugs video has a translation. i like listening to the natural language anyway. when i watch foreign films i always choose subtitled because i want the natural language. besides, the dubbing is usually badly done and laughable. but this also means you don’t have to put in a lot of time translating for me. so, yay! : )

I thought I was able to use a particular HTML tag, so I tried it. The tag failed to render, so I tried a different tag. After three tries, I gave up and saved my comment which did not display as it was marked as spam. I think other scenarios that can cause a comment to be flagged as spam is having too many links in a comment.

yesterday’s oil was fun! didn’t do that good, so he made halve of the face black and put in the little white triangle under the nose, the rest is me trying, haven’t got it jet, it needs to dry.
i’ll take you through the class.
it was a fun evening, you should have been there.
i am always the last one to come. there where 6 of us in total, 6 male 6 female. only one i didn’t know was the model.
i always shake hands with a new person, so first thing i did, shake hands and state you name.
take of your coat drop it somewhere.
Than peter showed us what we where gonna do, or supposed to do.
We painted on special white paper.
-first tape the paper to your board. i was standing next to the Spanish lady, we helped each-other out in the taping department.
we had two colors black and white.
- second, put black on your paper and use thinner (it was something els not harmful when breathing it in and it smelled different, forgot the name) and paper to spread th black thinly over the paper. It turned it into light brown.
- draw the head like an egg shape. around you egg you make it black.
- later i discovered i was the only one who had black all around the egg. the others all had a neck and shoulders, damn.
- tried something. used paper and thinner to get rid of the black. go the most beautifully neck and shoulders with shades and direction : ) yeah lucky me.
then put in the eyes, nose and mouth and put in the dark side. thats when i got a half dark face. then the lighter parts.
brake. during the brake explanation of light and dark brush-strokes. the Spanish lady was standing a bit at the side, she could never have seen it form over there, so i “grabbed” her with my wrists (hands are dirty (paint) in her waist and positioned her so she could see better.
oke brake over:
after that fuse the colors together and do fine-tunning by use of a brush without paint on it. this way you can lighten dark areas. you’ll know what i mean when you see the painting look at the dark side of the face and then the cheekbone.
there are a few brakes for us and the model. and when painting i tend to walk and look at the others as well. discovers that my left neighbor had forgotten a shadow above here eyes, pointed that out to him, walked back to my own painting, only to discover i had forgotten that very same shadow.
and it was very hot once again, and this wasn’t a nude session

you see, it is pure the technique.

yeah, those 5am mornings are killer. and i’m a night owl, so it’s even worse. i love staying up late. so bad when you know you’ve got to get up early. but i’m never late to work.. and always the first one in my department to arrive. an hour commute to work sucks. and 2½ years of that for you, too. sounds like you have it much better now. it’s a five minute drive to work for me, which is really nice. i can come home for lunch easily, too.
sweet that you’d help me shovel snow. snow is amazingly heavy, so it’s a tough job around here. :/
yes, my evenings and weekends have been dominated by freelance designs lately. good thing i love it or i’d be miserable. it’s good in the sense that when i work at home i have more opportunity to learn new techniques in photoshop as i don’t usually have the time for that at work. so there are some benefits to working so hard. and i do take care of myself, thank you for caring. the one thing.. i tend to be a bit sleep deprived. otherwise i’m careful.

lol, laag vliegen means low flying and in dutch it means to drive your car really fast.
but because it’s low it has better road-holding. mine has the sporting factory suspension-pack, its’s 1 inch lower than the standard. When the shocks went i had them replaced with adjustable sport shocks and set to the stiffest position. so have to slow down too, but not really for ground-clearance (only one real high speed bumps), more for the lack off comfort. Oo
Sounds like you do need a shovel of your own. Without one, how did you cope with the snow of the last day’s?

Don’t know where to start, states are so big and so much to see. i have to dive into it (and i will!)

i’ll start with class on friday.
oil as on Wednesday was white with off black as colors. now it was ocker (type of yellow, typed it wrong) and black.
started the same way. made halve the face black, which was a mistake cause the lighter color couldn’t hide the black underlayer and i couldn’t fuse anymore. in the end peter scrapted of a lot of the black paint to make room for the lighter parts. So without the fusing and losing the ability to lighten the color by stoking with a clean brush its regular painting that had to do. so it was a struggle.
For now i think the portrait and the model drawings/ paintings a re more a result of little accidents and not what we set out to paint. all the paintings look like a person, but not like the one posing. So i have asked to do traditional drawing as well to get better at proportion and making it look more like the real object / person.
wait and see what next week brings.

great tutorial vid on how to draw a realistic eye. and done in photoshop again. nice. she used the brush tool for the eye lashes, so those weren’t really drawn in. perfect tool for that. a major concept of photoshop is that each element is on its own layer, but it looks like she creates her art on one layer. would be interesting to know.

Pantera had something that i liked, but the other ones where terrible for me. Listened to the hole song, but it did take effort not tho kill the sound.
What really helped when i was angry, chopping wood but i haven’t done that for years.
Not angry very often,
only music is the calm music that does it for me.
What would make me feel less angry is sending your music to the one i am angry with ~smirk~
sleeps is important, but so is having fun! ; )

we only havevakantie it’s used in two ways:
you have vacation = the time off from work for a longer timespan
the other one is you are on vacation and that means going away to (not a staycation).
and there is the vrij dag = having a day off.
Don’t know, but it sounds like holiday is going way.
So during your vacation you can go on a holiday.

Your car already has good handling, its a sports-car. mine is a regular car with an upgraded suspension. not seeing, had that on sunday, rain was terrible, couldn’t see the white lines on the road anymore.
it melted in time, you were lucky. here is the picture that didn’t work: watering the plants what is it called, cause the translation-program called it watering, that sounded a bit odd to me. its not a zamboni, had to google it, it does sound fun. : )

love true colors by cyndi lauper. thanks! love that we share music. i knew you wouldn’t like the angry music, but.. full spectrum. those songs don’t make me angry if i’m not, but if i am and i listen to them they somehow help me channel the emotion. i’m not an angry person, but of course, everyone feels anger at times. i broke up with a b/f that wanted to marry me because he had anger issues. i didn’t/don’t want to live an angry life.
you’re very welcome for the holiday explanation. yes, i agree, going on holiday means going to a special destination on vacation. my vacation in december will be a staycation because i spent way too much money in august traveling to see my mom in the hospital. no big, i don’t mind having a staycation. actually, it’ll be more relaxing that way. and i have a lot in town and at home that i want to do. fun! : )
lol! true, my car is a sports car so it has good handling. so scary when visibility is affected by rain. i’ve traveled through pouring rain at night when it was difficult to see the road. other cars with foolish drivers were going too fast. definitely white knuckle driving. i was so relieved to reach my destination that i burst into tears. literally. was it that bad for you on sunday? sans the tears, i imagine. : P glad you made it to your destination safely.
lol! did you model that watering can for me? so sweet! that was luscious. that would make watering the plants a true pleasure. laughing so hard here. lol!

here is one of the designs that i recently completed: captain jack’s twitter page. i’m so happy seeing it there. and i finished the other freelance design tonight. yay! *o/* i’ll be able to show it to you as soon as it’s been uploaded to the site. : D it turned out far better than i thought it would (remember i was having difficulty with the art/photos provided?). freakin’ sweet! i’m so happy. now i can get with it on my next freelance job. awesomeness!

i’ll do a staycation as well, so much to do and you are right, it is relaxing.
it was terrible.
had one of those car events, got to the location of the start post, but nothing there, luckily the bus-company over there had an unsecured wifi point, so i could take a look, was looking for a phone number, but there was another address in that topic (on page 3). at that point it started to poor with rain, and it didn’t stop. got at that location at 3 pm. did see a few
car was open for some of the time so the interior got a little wet.
When i drove home there was some condensation on the side windows, so visibility was blocked a little. Oo
drove home in the right lane behind a suv, couldn’t see sh**.
There are roadworks on that road and there are those concrete barriers / guard-rail the car in front of me got in the emergency-lane and i was following him, so ended up there as well. Concrete was pretty close, but no harm done. Got home, was wet to the bones, you are just as sensitive as i am, but didn’t cry, it was to cold for that, thanks for caring : )

saterday morning art-class tour in the van Gogh museum (it’s in amsterdam). got there with 5 minutes to spare, parked the car in the parking-garage under the museums. there are more museums there, so had to look at the map for it. found it, yes, big queue for the ticket-box less than 3 minutes left, damn don’t think i’ll make it. on the right of the two ticket-boxes there was the entrance. peter told us, if you have a museum-cart you don’t need to stand in line for the ticket-box, were you can enter hangs above the door. but nothing above the door. so asked a security guard. i didn’t need to stand in line and could walk straight past the line. into the museum, they scanned the card, lose your coat in the cloakroom. There i found three others of the group. now where to meet. phone-call helped, trough a metal detector to the meeting point. and met up with the rest of the group i wasn’t the last one this time ; )
i am not much of a museum-visitor, but who knows what a card like that can do, one of the others already told me the card was also handy when you needed to use the toilet, just pop in the museum and back out again, ideal.
then on the the exposition of Alfred Stevens
There we got a tour lead by peter (he is the art-teachers / artist, but you probably had guessed that already, sorry for not introducing him before).
No pictures, not aloud to take them even not without the flashlight.
explained to us was that color’s are different when they are besides another color.
A lot of the painted faces a few elements where really in detail and for the most part rough.
Dark color’s where put on later because it was difficult to put a lighter color on top of it an keep it light, you would need a lot of light colored paint in other to do that ( hmmm, now he tells me)
and see the change in painting trough the years by the same artist. Than up to the paintings of van Gogh himself (expressionist)
