That was an easy one but a placebo for me, yes!

  2. Complement and Compliment for Marina’s Video :

PLACEBO is has she said a derivation from PLACERE “to please” in Latin.
But PLACERE gave also PLACID in english “pleasing, calm” and PLAID “soothing”.

No, no, not in pill form, nurse. I need that placebo in the vein. Double strength. I just stayed up for 36 hours straight, no beer, nothing stronger than coffee, intending to stay up another 12 hours. But I crashed. That was 5 hours ago. I’ve just woken up and have to write it down before I forget. It was troubled deep REM sleep, filled with surreal scenes dominated by women from out of my past. Think you’re rid of them and can move on with your life? Ha !
They’re still there in memory circuits in my brain. I was dreaming of these ghosts from the twilight zone, but at the same time trying to reason that this couldn’t be real, and trying to move my body but I was paralyzed…paralyzed with sleep. Then I’d wake up and look up at the ceiling or just at the pillow, only to sink back into dream state. That may have happened as many a 4 times. I’ve forgotten most of who they are now, just 10 minutes after rising from the bed. At least now I know what’s in store for me when I have to, once again, sleep.

I.e. If Australia was ever involved in the same thing as america and britain when it came to the [Black Faces].

It is interesting how verbs change over times and become nouns. The actions become personified or objectified over time. I think we see that more recently with the verb “hate” becoming the noun “hater.” Or the noun or even person becomes an action verb. “Going to the John” comes to mind. I don’t imagine King John thought his name would in the future be associated with a bowl movement. Or is that even correct? I am not sure about that one. I hear a lot of different stories. Was the person who invented the toilet named John Crapper? I have heard that story and I have heard the story about a weak king who was forced to sign the Magna Carta named “John the Weak.” That might be an interesting thing to investigate.

I have a word request. What is the story behind the word {Gestalt} and what does it mean??

My lunch is filled with my template…word and phrase request for this day…The term “meridian” comes from the Latin meridies, meaning “midday”; the sun crosses a given meridian midway between the times of sunrise and sunset on that meridian. The same Latin stem gives rise to the terms A.M. (Ante Meridian) and P.M. (Post Meridian) used to disambiguate hours of the day when using the 12-hour clock..___ ___Marina; I thank you for your times moment and I think this would be a HotForWords YOU-TUBE hit…

    • From Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, 1594:

      JULIET:
      ‘Tis but thy name that is my enemy;
Thou art thyself, though not a Montague.
What’s Montague? it is nor hand, nor foot,
Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part
Belonging to a man. O, be some other name!
What’s in a name? that which we call a rose
      By any other name would smell as sweet;
So Romeo would, were he not Romeo call’d,
Retain that dear perfection which he owes
Without that title. Romeo, doff thy name,
And for that name which is no part of thee
      Take all myself.

      Another afterthought:

English developed in England from the mingled speech of successive waves of invaders: Angles, Saxons, Jutes, Danes, Vikings, Norman French. But what remains in English of the speech of the earlier Celts — or of the Romans who occupied Britain from 43-410AD? Does anything at all remain in English of the pre-Celtic Britons, the supposedly pre-Indo-European people who followed the retreating glaciers of the Ice Age into Britain? :?:

This time it is not just “the matter of Britian” that concerns him, it is the matter of the entire Earth. Merlin urges us to see and hear warning signals all around us to rediscover the ancient Wisdom before we pass the point of no return.

His promise is that, if we can unearth this Wisdom and allow it to infuse our science, our technology and our thinking, the future that lies before us will- despite all appearances to the contrary- surpass our wildest dreams.

….pretended refusal of something desired. [lazy] The Book of Xanthus the Philosopher and His Slave Aesop.

According to the sparse information gathered about him from references to him in several Greek works (he was mentioned by Aristophanes, Plato, Xenophon and Aristotle), Aesop was a slave for someone called Xanthus (Ξανθος), who resided on the island of Samos. Aesop must have been freed, for he conducted the public defense of a certain Samian demagogue (Aristotle, Rhetoric, ii. 20). He subsequently lived at the court of Croesus, where he met Solon, and dined in the company of the Seven Sages of Greece with Periander at Corinth.

It involves the calculation of the mean after discarding given parts of a probability distribution or sample at the high and low end, and typically discarding an equal amount of both.

For most statistical applications, 5 to 25 percent of the ends are discarded.

In some regions of Central Europe it is also known as a Windsor mean, but should not be confused with the Winsorized mean, which is similar but distinct.

  45. neuroway says: 42

It is not that hard to find an acceptable compromise between the two pills. The patient should be explained what a placebo is. If he is intelligent enough, that will make him stronger. If not louder and perhaps a little more dangerous. If he is not intelligent enough, well whatever medicine will weaken him even more, since in reality he needs none, except a mere placebo. Why lie to him and give him placebos? The only reason is the price of the placebo pill.

Hwk: Well, sure sometimes people are just begging for someone to pay attention to them–ask any General Practice Doctor. They treat and even write notes for people to excuse them from work when there is absolutely no malady except that that person wants/needs some attention. A cup of tea to ‘calm the nerves’ is often just to get someone to focus elsewhere, or (sorry) to get them to shut-up. In current times many people’s fractured psyches call for many placebos often, which we’ve all helped administer at some point: ‘I just really need a movie.’

I’d like to request the expression [under (one's) belt]. The meaning is obviously “in one’s possession or experience” but why “belt”? What does “belt” have with “experience” or “possession”? How are these words related?

    Thank you very much.

However, the meaning of placebo has evolved. Your definition is out-of-date. Whereas placebos are still prescribed the please or placate the patient, the more common usage is of the use of the placebo in double-blind experiments.

The solution is to give the patient both pills as one is real and the placebo, which is just a sugar pill, won’t hurt them.

PS Good lesson on placebo — spasibo!

  59. Evan Owen says: 25

Pharmaceutical placebos often produce improvements, as patient recovery is often linked to his/her expectation of recovery.

An antonym is a nocebo, or something that produces harm to a patient apparently due only to the patient’s expectation of harm. In other words, if a patient expects a medication to produce harmful side effects, the patient may experience such effects even if the medication has never been shown to cause them. :???:

It turned out the Greeks, then the Romans, both HATED the Cretes and I’m wondering if this led to the Etymology of [Cretin]. Apparently, the etymology is somehow relating to “Christian” and for a while, Crete was conquered by Muslims…so like “what-ever”. As Rodney King once said, “Can’t we all just get along?”

If one pill is the real medicne and the other is a placebo, just give both to the patient. The real medicine will cure the patient, and the placebo would just be extra,
I guess the placebo in my life is the 2007 Chevrolet Aveo I drive. It has all the features I want, and it’s cheaper to operate, insure, and drive than if I bought a Mercedes-Benz sedan.

  73. errin says: 8

Hmmm… I don’t believe I have ever given anybody a placebo. And I don’t think I ever will. If I were a doctor, I’d be the exact opposite… instead of handing out sugar pills and placebos to placate a patient, I’d be blunt, honest, and open, making them take real medicine even if it was hard to swallow. Our culture values ease and comfort over taking the hard path, even though the hard way is the more rewarding of the two. As a nation, we are way too coddled, way too concerned with our comfort levels above all else. To me, that just leads to weakness. Nothing good comes easy, and the best things in life often have to be earned. The biggest irony is that the easy path is not easy at all… it’s merely more convenient, and often leads to things getting worse because all you are doing is delaying the tough decisions and choices you have to make.

And, although it is mainly a medical term, ‘placebo’ is an apt term for quite a few things out there. Take the news, for example… is it really ‘the truth’ or merely a placebo disguised as ‘the truth’? What about television? It’s basically a 24/7 placebo. And let’s not forget our politicians in Washington DC… practically all they do is hand out placebos to the public. In fact, that’s the current problem our political system is facing… real reform and progress is needed on a few fronts (health care, energy, infrastructure, etc), but the powers that be would rather find a placebo than an actual cure. Indeed, our political class seems to only be there to drag their feet on any real progress, any real reform, any real change. Perhaps we have become a placebo nation, wholly allergic to any real medicine. Time will tell…

Thanks for another interesting lesson, Nurse Orlova! Nice nurse outfit too! Peace and love, Errin : )

    • beevee14 says: 8.1

I agree, Errin. It seems that our leadership is unfamiliar with leading. Afghanistan, Health Care, economy, Iran  ….take a REAL stand on something! In leadership courses one maxim is:
“In light of doing nothing, do something-anything”
They must have missed that day… :|

      • errin says: 8.1.1

I don’t think they view their job as standing for something. They basically view their positions as a way to perpetuate the status quo, and only try to legislate and fix things when they have to. As much as the leadership deserves the blame for being so inert, so does the electorate for being so complacent.

To me, being progressive has little to do with liberalism, conservatism, or socialism. It simply means trying to progress things forward regardless of direction (right or left). Progress is a good thing. Efficiency is a good thing. But those in political power do not like progress because it means inviting change, and inviting change means risking losing some control or profit. Human nature is such that those in power focus first and foremost on retaining that power. So, for a while now, our politicians in Washington DC have merely been babysitting the country and doling out progress as little as possible. Hence the placebo nation we find ourselves living in.

        • I have been comparing it to a person in a abusive relationship. The fear of the unknown is a real inhibitor.

          • :o “The consensus among WTO watchers appears to be that the talks will fail: that they will conclude without a substantive agreement on reducing agricultural subsidies. But this is not because the WTO is a tool of the West — in fact, it’s precisely the opposite. Progress is being stymied because the poorer nations are refusing to sign onto agreements that don’t benefit them. As reported in the Wall Street Journal today, Brazil’s foreign minister Celso Amorim ‘accused the wealthy industrialized nations of sacrificing the interests of 70 percent of the developing world — farmers barely getting by — for the sake of a tiny segment of their own populations.’

So who’s the guilty party — the WTO, where representatives of 149 countries actually get together to try to hammer out agreements — or the rich countries, whose hypocrisy on the issue of free trade is gross and obscene? While the West whines endlessly about pirated movies and copycat Prada purses, and demands that foreign markets be open to every gewgaw that the industrialized nations produce, those same nations are at the same coddling and protecting their own farmers at the expense of the world’s most disadvantaged populations.”

Sometimes there is no real medicine. The placebo is given in the hope that the patient will improve simply because they believe they have have been given medicine. That is the “placebo effect.” Otherwise placebos are used for drug testing in double-blind experiments.

      • errin says: 8.2.1

The placebo effect is rather fascinating, but I would have to believe that it is limited by how serious the illness is. The more intense the illness, the less likely the placebo effect will help ‘cure’ it. I wonder just when doctors started using placebos and when they discovered the phenomenon of the placebo effect.

        • There has been a fair amount written on the topic. As for serious diseases, the key is that the placebo can have an effect. This is why placebos are used in the testing of treatments of the most serious illnesses. Nonetheless, placebos are much more effective in general for skinned knees in children than for lung cancer in adults.
