  1. Teacher, i loved this video in Russian. I have some friends from there and, even if i just some words, i like very much how it sounds (me being a philologist also, by the way, and, by the way, i will never be prettiest teacher as you are).

My word proposal would be [snack] or [kolobok] (i wonder if the name of the character means something).

Once again thanks for sharing your beauty… hope some day You will give us a shot of your soles. Health and best luck, teacher.

    ***Russian case endings***

OK, I think I’ve worked out a way to remember the six Russian case endings for nouns and adjectives:

Nominative Case: Not something you do at a political convention. :|
Accusative Case: Not something that happens at a trial.
Dative Case: Not something to carry dates in (or figs, for that matter).
Genitive Case: Not a jock-strap.
Prepositional Case: Not an incident of “hitting up” an attractive woman.
Instrumental Case: Not something for carrying a violin.

Your video is stopping and stalling for minutes at a time and a little circle starts spinning in the middle of the screen! And you had on that shiny sexy silver bikini-real nice!

I get that spinning wheel sometimes on both of my computers. I clean the cache and defrag sometimes it helps sometimes it doesn’t. I use FireFox and believe it has a memory leak and it takes up to much resources so that’s why I get the spinning wheel not enough memory or a slow video card. I just give up sometimes and let the video load completely then run it.

    ;-) Hi,
I was hoping you could help me with a word… squander. I can’t find the etymology for it, but I think it was used as early as 1536 by anglo saxons.
    Thanks

Hey Annika let me help you so Marina can spot your word for you. Put your request in brackets like this [squander] that way she can run a search of the brackets and find your word. The directions are right above the smileys in red letters. Hopes this helps you on your request.

I was going to leave Greatest Potential a compliment on the forum This Site Sucks and also give my opinion. But decided not to feed the frenzy. I still give credit where credit is due to GP for his sign of Peace and not fanning the flames any further. It’s Like leonard said he has been on here a long time and not one of his words have been used, some of the older members I would like for them to see at least one request made into a video, but that may never happen because of so many requests for words Marina can’t get to all of them. She picks the words that would be the most beneficial to her site and to the audience and of course her ratings. Marina is not on here for not only fun but to make a living like the rest of us. Most of us encouraged her to advertise so she wouldn’t have to charge or ask for donations for upkeep on her personal web site. She has made this site into a learning experience both mentally and emotionally and then there is recess or is it the other way around, any way as she has told us many times DON’T FEED THE TROLLS
Sorry for the long speech and I got a little bit off track, but I like to express how I feel about Marina and how she educates us whether we learn or not.

  10. Watching the video and hearing Pretty Woman really caught my attention. I am 2/3 way through a very dense (i.e. not full of fluff) book called Reel Truth, and I just finished the chapter on clearances. If you tried to put that song in a movie, it would cost you no doubt hundreds of thousands of dollars for the rights. This is dead serious. Maybe it’s different for a jounalistic piece somehow, so they got away with it. Or maybe they just opened themselves up to a juicy lawsuit. Who knows. Anyway, I was looking in the background for copywrited works, identifiable faces, etc. in Marina’s film. Gotta really watch that stuff.

      • Yesterday is the first day that I have been up for more than a couple of hours at a time. It doesn’t hurt unless I move a little too agressively, that is to say, I can sit or stand without pain. However, I can tell that the muscles are still working overtime, because of how tired they get and the sleep it takes to recover. Last night I woke up at 4AM, read for an hour and then decided to take a little nap. Boom! I awoke at 3:15PM, with the day fairly shot. So it’s getting better every day, but I have a ways to go. Maybe it will be over by the end of the month. It’s one thing to be old, but another to feel like it. I compensate by c-a-r-e-f-u-l-l-y examining M’s pictures.

    ***Russian brides***

Three years ago, a beautiful young blonde Russian woman started hitting on me on Match.com, despite the fact she was half my age. I figured she was looking for a ticket to America, and would start looking for other prospects once she got established here. I tactfully wrote back that I was too old, and she certainly could attract a suitable American man more her age.

Then I read that young Russian women are not biased against older men as husbands, as American women are (unless they’re gold diggers.) Did I blow off a great opportunity? Who knows?

Marina, maybe you could shed some light on this important cultural difference between Russia and the US.

  19. Evan Owen says: 57

Jeez, with all this emphasis on “staying connected” 24-7 with Blackberries, Twitter, and whatever, you’d think there’d be more people like me who try to find time to be OUT of touch to recharge. Thoughts, anyone? (I know, I’m being inconsistent.)

    • Agreed, Evan. I took a couple hikes yesterday in our county’s very nice Metro Parks, yesterday. It was very refreshing to breathe the fresh, cool air and see all the fall colors in the forest, not to mention saying howdy do to passersby.

  21. Great video Marina. It was the best interview of you I have ever seen. Nice a long and seems to be a bit more descriptive than other interviews I have seen in the past. Too bad I don’t speak Russian. I feel cheated….

Interestingly enough, Im discovering that US interviews are very short. It’s like Americans have H.A.D.D. Why do people have such short attention spans these days as appose to the past? Anyone?

This short attention span is very unhealthy to society. This will cause many problems in our society. People will make poor decisions for lack of depth of knowledge. People will become more hollow in their thinking. Here’s an analogy. It’s like looking at the cover a book and only reading the back cover. Then saying I know enough about the book and don’t need to read it. I will make a review based on the front and back cover. A decision maker will read my review and decide which books will be stocked based on that persons hollow review of the book. Do you see the problem with short attention spans?

    • I agree the interview seemed to be the most comprehensive, but the girl has to leave some mystery, right? I wonder who inserted the interviewer into the video, Marina or the interviewer? That was funny.

Regarding attention spans being short, were you thinking of something in particular? I remember this argument being proposed in school – in the 1960s. Is information being presented into greater and greater quantities forcing one to absorb some information and discard most? The premise was: news use to be passed from person to person, then newspapers, radio, television and now the Internet. (How come Internet is the only information medium capitalized?) Information is continually being processed faster and faster, forcing the shorthand of texting which really chops up the language into small bits, such as, OMG! If the information one hangs onto is influenced by one’s personality, background or familiarity with the subject, how could one give a truly objective test of material learned when so much information is purged and so many variables exist between people? Sometimes, slower is better.

I do admire the way people used to communicate by written letters. For instance, when letters from the battlefields were read from the Revolutionary War and Civil War periods, the penmanship was superior to ours, the words seemed to be more sophisticated than words we use today, and feelings were expressed more eloquently by uneducated people. Makes one wonder about the education process. I believe this was why the observations were made. Educators were troubled about what to do. Do we let language morph or try to maintain consistency and improvement. What does Teacher say?

      • Mystery? Why do people need mysteries with no ambition to get them solved? Mysteries drive me freaking nuts. What if Albert E. just sat at his desk and said. “I like mysteries. I don’t plan to figure them out. I just like them sitting there on the desk and giving them the stupid look.” Yeah, right. Epic fail.

“Regarding attention spans being short, were you thinking of something in particular?” No.

“I remember this argument being proposed in school – in the 1960s. Is information being presented into greater and greater quantities forcing one to absorb some information and discard most?” = poor teaching skills.

“(How come Internet is the only information medium capitalized?) ” Because it’s quick, free, and easy to access. Duh.

“Sometimes, slower is better. ” Yes, There is not information overload as people claim. It’s just much easier to access than ever before. People are not disciplined in how to handle all this information. I don’t think they are teaching this in schools.

“I do admire the way people used to communicate by written letters. For instance, when letters from the battlefields were read from the Revolutionary War and Civil War periods, the penmanship was superior to ours, the words seemed to be more sophisticated than words we use today, and feelings were expressed more eloquently by uneducated people.” – I am so happy you can see this! Your exactly right! I even see this in scientific studies, computer programing, and other professions. My dad use to day “Don’t do half assed work.” This is eveident in our auto industry. Our cars and trucks suck. Why? Because we don’t do the work need to make them last long. I will never buy an American car for that fact.

“Makes one wonder about the education process. I believe this was why the observations were made. Educators were troubled about what to do.” – It’s because Americans don’t give a crap about education. Public schools are always begging for money. There is no money attracting corporations to make better eduction products. Americans would rather spend hundreds of dollars on their Nikes than education. We are all show and no go. Americans think, it’s more important to be attractive than it is to have something under the hood.
The US is so far behind that we are in risk of becoming a third world country.

        • Regarding mysteries, I agree with your statement, but there is room for my inquiry as it pertains to women. They will say, “I’m not a mystery, what I need is very simple to see.” Ah, therein lies the rub, as men are from Mars and women are from Venus and it is in seeing that makes us perceive the world differently.

I saw a program (sorry couldn’t find the source) that identified the number of sensory receptors in the eyeballs of men as apposed to women. There is a stark evolutionary difference. It was proposed that men needed to be able to distinguish movement in shaded areas for hunting and finding ones way back home in the dark. Women stayed at home, er cave, and nurtured the family making close attention to details. There was a test of putting men and women in a waiting room, then asking what they remembered about object, colors, etc. in the room. Women beat the men hands down.

The theory suggests that the vision affects memories, and memory patterns affect behaviors. Therefore, we must accept mysteries from the fairer sex. DOH! Easier said than done.

I believe something should be done on a national level to make education funding equitable, or at least compete for dollars based on results instead of relying of the values of property taxes to support schools. This is inherently unfair, as the rich will always be able to afford better teachers, facilities, and BOOKS. And, the poor will pay a higher percentage of their meagar incomes just trying to keep up. Hence the poor getting poorer.

          • About the details part. Women tend to be worried about the details of their looks when men don’t notice. Men look at first glance, the silhouette of a women. You know when you get the question women ask us something like,”Honey didn’t you notice my new look?” When they are referring to darker shade of black mascara. Then they get mad at your for they spent weeks searching for the perfect black mascara. Oh or the classic one of “You didn’t notice my new shoes?” The women owns like a 100 pairs of the darn things.

Accept the mysteries of the fairer sex? NEVER! Not ever! I know more about woman’s G spot than most women know. I know who named it, I know how to find it, why it’s there, even how to medically enhance it’s stimulation. Do you know even men have one, but of course it’s not called the G spot. No, I don’t accept leaving mysteries just as they are. It annoys me like a teacher scratching her nails on a chalkboard.

Yes, I agree with funding should not be tied to property taxes. It needs to tied to a pay for performance. Yet there needs to be a base funding.
It has been said over and over in talks that there is this big division of the haves and the have nots. That’s part of the problem with Capitalism. It divides people.

          • [Crazy] Some words and phrases to communicate with are: the spoiled masses lack the basics of understanding “4-seasons”, and thus; leading to economic collaspes and begging for mercy of needs, not wants. Short attention spans…well, I think — oops, just got a text message and an email, gotta go tweet, later!

      • Boooorrrinnng! Your wasting my time watching American Idol, I’m a celebrity get me out of here, soap operas, dumb down Discovery channels, Smallvile, Supernatural, Grey’s Anatomy, Heroes, Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill, Lost, and Desperate Housewives. Dumb down programing is easy to watch. Americans are lazy thinkers. Their brains hurt when they think. The TV industry knows this and that’s why programing it what it is today. We voted to watch stupid tv. We love not thinking. It’s the American way.

Watching Marina’s 500th video interview was very interesting. Apparently Russians love using their minds than Americans do.

I think the schools get paying taxes and democ.racy —mixed up. MaRiNa’s take(share) ;-) ..think together and we will watch them sink; old captain

    • Both Sesame Street and MTV were produced for a market with short attention spans. It’s kind of like the bumper sticker that says,”By the time you read this you already read it”.

      • That’s because children in the US are force fed sugar in their diets. Then make them very hyper than they are naturally are. They can’t focus. Hence the need for TV programming to adjust. High-fructose corn syrup and crystalline fructose are very dangerous to the growth of society. (you know what high-fructose is but many don’t know about crystalline fructose. Crystalline Fructose is an ultra pure fructose that is normally found in Vitamin drinks.)
Until we get America off this sugar diet, we won’t see any decline in short attention spans.

        • I totally agree with you Captain. But we can’t deny that even a lot of our YouTube videos are less than five minutes. Some will say why read a book or browse a dictionary when we can have instant gratification on the net? I think it’s too late to turn back now.

          • The reason 5 minutes or less seems to be work on Youtube is people make boring videos. Many Youtubers have no idea how to make successful videos. Just take a look at TV or the movies. They keep us entertained for hours. What if the next Batman movie was only one minute and 37 seconds? Well that’s called a trailer hehehe, but the point is that directors now how to keep people entertained.

        • You are onto an important issue, Captain. Good nutrition and exercise are important to learning. I was very disappointed when school cafeterias started putting vending machines in place of a well balanced meal. Who on Earth came up with that brainstorm?

Recently, I saw a school put in a system of growing and harvesting their own food, thus teaching an appreciation for the process our food goes through. Kids took interest and started eating lettuce and other vegetables that they never touched before.

I grew up in an age of daily gym classes and good school lunches, or the barter system, “I’ve got a baloney and ketchup sandwich, anyone have peanut butter to trade?”

          • I’m getting really big into nutrition for since my past 3 months of eating better foods I have notice MAJOR changes in my mental thinking and physical abilities. It’s amazing the crap that is in the food supply. I’ve even found so called “healthy” foods claiming to be good for you and discovering they are not. It’s like giving someone crack with vitamins in it and saying it’s better than regular crack for the healthy vitamins it contains. Hey! It still is crack! Period.

I have not had a soda in nearly a year. I don’t drink vitamin drinks that contain crystalline fructose or high-fructose syrup. I see Crystalline Fructose as worse heath issue than High-Fructose syrups. I would rather see people drink HF syrup then Crystalline Fructose for I see it the better of the two evils. I also reduced the amount of coffee I drink to about 2 cups a day or I drink Rooibos. Sometimes I drink Green or White tea with Stevia. Caffeine is good for you but in excess it’s very bad for you. You should drink no more than 350 mg per day. That’s about 3 cups of coffee.
I eat 2 salads a day and salmon twice a week. So yeah I’m working on my own customized diet.

I seen in the news that schools are growing and harvesting their own food. That awesome! I found a young lady that didn’t know where hamburger patties came from. She thought they were plants of some sort that were ground up and made into patties.

Many people don’t eat vegetables. This is a big problem in society. They eat so much junk they lose the desire to eat veggies. I on the other hand love snacking on veggies. I developed a taste for all kinds of good things like nuts, carrots, celery, cucumbers, pickles, olives, well you get the picture.

I hope that people will get a clue that part of the solution to heath care is prevention.

  22. I loved this interview, even though I couldn’t understand a word . . . except orgasm  You never fail to surprise. My, my, my what your parents must think! I was wondering if you’d do a video on the word [skate]. I’ve been wondering how it came to be both a verb ( “to [skate]“, “going [iceskating]“, etc.) and a part of the names of several objects, such as [iceskates] (or simply “skates”) or [skateboard]. These all share some sort of gliding motion in common, so I’m guessing that that would be the relevent factor, but that’s just a guess on my part. I’m also assuming that the objects were named becaus eof the gliding motion they enable/ produce, but that’s just a guess as well…

Anyway, I look forward to your next video, whatever it is.

If someone can record a narration in English but can’t modify the video to have the English voice-over, then please provide me the English narration — I can re-do this video with the English voice-over.

  37. I would like to request the word [poison] its spelt almost identical to the french word meaning fish. and i wana know why

  38. Capman911 says: 35

That was a great interview Marina. Do you every forget some of the Russian language since you live here now or do you practice it enough to stay fluent?

  39. Rijk says: 34

something is wrong, i got logged of and had to redo my reply, and now
the reply shows up on the right in From Russia with love but i didn’t post it there.

ps Karl i am still on strike ; )

    • Evan Owen says: 34.1

And if you redo your comment a third time, would that make it the “Third…” — oh, never mind.

    • Hi Rijk,
I think I know what you mean about getting logged OFF and you’re reference about, “not posting it where I thought”.

Normally, when you log OUT and then when you log back IN again, you are returned to the page that you were on. But, if you were disconnected due to a network / PC issue, and then when you log back IN, it is possible that the cookies were not synchronized and you would log back into another page than the one that you had been on.

I’m still on strike too, but I forgot what I was striking for.

      • Rijk says: 34.2.1

no that’s not it. i was logged in, typed the reply, clicked add comment and got then got you must be logged in to reply.

Than logged back in, redid the reply posted it.
It ended up where i posted it, but on the right it showed from Russia with… but i see i am not the only one who has that problem.

We are on strike because we want M to register to your You-tube channel as a sign of thank you, for all you have done for her on your channel. it’s not like it’s gonna take her a sh.. load of time. And you deserve it.

So M we are still on strike!

    • Sorry Rijk,
The cookie thing as I explained is what happens.

Look at my test gravatar over at the far right.
Notice it is an empty comment and it says it is from the Russia with Love page, but when you click on it, look at the page you are on. It says Jaywalking page.

I did that as a test to prove to you it is the cookie thing.

I can have you demonstrate that to yourself if you are interested.

The question is, how did the cookies get un-synchronized.
In most cases it is due to something that happens on one’s own end (PC, browser. network etc), BUT, it is also possible that you may have been editing a comment while Marina was tweaking the site.

In my case, it happens rarely and it is usually something I clicked on I shouldn’t have. And on very rare cases, it is when Marina tweaks the site like re-booting the server.

      • Rijk says: 34.4.1

        Hey James,

i posted this reply to M:

Shame on you Marina, Shame on you.
I was just on PedanticKarl’s YT – channel.
And its is dedicated to you. But your not listed a friend, not even as a subscriber.
        How could you?

Didnt get a reaction, The least she could do, for all that PK has done, is subscribe to his channel.

So that’s why i am on strike.

  40. Hs4Mm says: 33

Remember your complaint about the size and location of the unsubscribe button in the new YouTube format? Perhaps this is old news, but I just noticed that they got rid of that button all together! (Now have “edit subscription” in innocuous plain text.)

    a little funny:

The guys were all at a biker’s camp and
no one wanted to room with Bob, because he snored so badly. They decided it wasn’t fair to make one of them stay with him the whole time, so they voted to take turns.

The first guy slept with Bob and comes to breakfast the next morning
with his hair a mess and his eyes all bloodshot. They said, “Man, what
happened to you?” He said, “Bob snored so loudly, I just sat up and
    watched him all night.”

The next night it was a different guy’s turn. In the morning, same
thing–hair all standing up, eyes all bloodshot. They said, “Man, what
happened to you? You look awful!” He said, ‘Man, that Bob shakes the
roof with his snoring. I watched him all night.”

The third night was Fred’s turn. Fred was a tanned, older cowboy; a
man’s man. The next morning he came to breakfast bright-eyed and
bushy-tailed. “Good morning!” he said. They couldn’t believe it. They
    said, “Man, what happened?”
He said, “Well, we got ready for bed. I went and tucked Bob into bed, patted him on the butt, and kissed him
    good night…

Bob sat up and watched me all night.”

  43. pat haskett says: 30

I don’t speak a bit of Russian but I understood this video! Wow! 500 videos congrats and 5 gajillion cazillion stars! I started at about 250 but I’ve seen them all. Let people say what they will, but you are one smart cookie. And maybe it’s my own fantasy but I get the vibe a good amount of your beauty comes from within. Thank you.

  44. wyo550 says: 29

The best part of the video- besides the repeated high-resolution digital zoom to the tits (which showed how much HD image manipulation is possible, even with PAL/NTSC conversion)- was when you were driving around in Beverly Hills and whoever was in the car next to you saw the blonde with a cameraman in her car and said, “I don’t know who she is but I’ll honk the horn and you take a photo of her when she turns!” and you said to the cameraman, “You just deal with it.”

Great to see Mommy again. Hope she liked the fragrance samples from Grasse that I mailed you… you know, from student 26,745,967.
    Ochen prekasniya devochka! Dasvedanya, Dzhon

  45. booknorton says: 28

    Hey Марина!

Congrats for the 500 video. I’m learning Russian now, so you should build a site where you teach Russian. that would be great :P

But till than… I would like to know the origin of a very simple word [book] . You have read lot of books, haven’t you? You must learnt that lot of knowledge from somewhere :P

  46. Dear marina first off thanks for zooming in on the breast.Second off I was wondering where did the word Boner come from? I didn’t think it had a bone?

  47. BigBhd95 says: 26

Dearest Marina  another great video, # 500, how time flies
 glad to see you spending some time enjoying your many[accomplishments] keep on with your keepin on, luv ya
    B.B.

  48. [boot a computer]
Why boot??? Congrats on your 500.

    • boot = bootstrap
Bootstrap–the strap on the back of your shoe/boot to pull it over your calf.
“pull up by one’s bootstrap” – to do a task without any assistance or aid.

A bootstrap program is a hardwired program which launches another program (the system software)

Hope that helps, even though I don’t have the breasts… ;)

  49. seesixcm6 says: 24

    Dear Marina,
What a dramatic photo of yourself in that purple dress with one strap off your shoulder. Of course, I see it as an invitation to help you out of your dress. Did you put your photo up just so we would react that way? :?:
Of course, your fluency in Russian is highly impressive. It’s as if you’ve been speaking Russian for dozens of years. And you ellide words together just like Russians do. Do you like American boys who don’t speak Russian very well? It’s easier to quote what Atilla the Hun said to all the Russian girls, “Just call me Hun, Hon.” “Hon” is a short form for “Honey”, so it’s kind of funny. After that, he was called “Atilla the Pun.”
Congratulations on providing over 500 videos, and for being such a famous celebrity both on the Internet, and in Russia. The foreign minister for Russia, Ivanov, should present you a medal for making Russia look so good.

  50. Hi Marina, can you find the origin of the phrase [smart aleck]

    • Evan Owen says: 23.1

This being Russian day, I’ll pull the answer from LossForWords’ “Fractured Philology” series.

[Smart Aleck] is of Russian origin. One Count Alexander at the court of the Czar made so many offensive wisecracks and jibes that the other courtiers persuaded the Czar to have him put to death. Thereafter, anyone’s wisecracks were met with the dark warning, “Don’t be a ‘смерть Александр’ ” ["dead Alexander"]. Russian immigrants brought the expression to America, where Americans adopted the phrase, misunderstanding “smert” as “smart” and shortening the Count’s name to “Aleck.”

It’s true, I tell you.
