Article in one of the Largest Russian Newspapers

Here is an article about me in one of the largest newspapers in Russia, the Komsomolskaya Pravda. It’s funny how they take the commonly mistaken angle that I am teaching Americans English :-) This screenshot is actually from the Ukrainian version of the article.

Here is the article run through Google Translator.

Nice Ad over there to the right, Michael Kors
I like how they did the catalog browsing
by flipping pages from either corner. Pretty neat stuff.

    1 m 65 cm nice height.

I spent a good bit of this evening helping a friend with her English homework, after reading that, I am sure she used a translation program.

my favorite line in the article:
    “famous American leader, Bill O’Reilly.”

Great article none the less. It is always good to learn more about you. I do prefer Mosnews over Pravda.

  4. Captain Jack says:

So why is it that they thing you’re teaching us English?

  5. you have come a long way,Im proud of you my teacher

  6. Shouldn’t “I dream of her home in the Hollywood Hills with a large dog…” actually be “I dream of her large home in the Hollywood Hills with a dog…” Or is Gorby on the way out?

Perhaps instead of relying on Google to translate, M should do a translation for us.

Notice how they always seem to choose the “reclining on the floor” pictures?

“I spit on your breast”!?!? Who said that? Time to get some of your bully students to take care of things.

  8. Hi Teach,
Congratulations on the good exposure! More mainstream exposure leads to more opportunities for you, and I know that you have what it takes to capitalize on such opportunities. My admiration for you is exceeded only by my respect for you.

Marina’s Mail Order Brides video on You tube she sings some russian? song that sounds like “Caka lean, cocka lean” What on earth does it mean? Marina also has s sweet singing voice to me. Sort of personal and playful. Her voice alway sounds sweet to me.

    Dear Marina,
Congratulations on a nice article about you in a major Russian newspaper. Maybe Russians will learn to speak English better by watching and hearing you!
As soon as YouTube starts to broadcast 3D videos, I hope you will buy the video camera with the twin lens so you will appear in 3D! I’d gladly wear those red and green glasses to see you in 3D!

  12. Evan Owen says:

    Word requests:

[Esperanto], as in I’m “esperanto” you’ll do a lesson on this!
And maybe as part of that lesson: [международний] [языкъ]

Curious coincidence: “язык” is apparently cognate with the Breton “yezh,” both meaning “language.”

  13. Evan Owen says:

But Marina, you ARE teaching English to Americans!

  14. tristesmiles says:

How can you interpret the results from Google Trends about Hotforwords? It looks like the trend has been slightly decreasing during the last 12 months, but not much. How does it translate into the actual popularity?

  18. fglrx says:

Good article, even if I’m suspicious of any newspaper that has the word “truth” in the title. :) I managed to read it in the original version, in spite of the fact that I read the Cyrillic very slowly.

  19. venichka says:

Privet Marinka….do you know or have you read anything by John McWhorter???His latest book “Our magnificent bastard tongue” is ….ochen horosho….be nice to see two mentally and physically beautiful word addicts like you two to do a tour together

  20. tonyb says:

I also think that you are teaching americans english. And that is so funny, humorous. I had to take one and a half years of either German, French or Russian to get my BS in chem in 1984. I wish I had taken Russian or French-OOH! LA LA! French, is so sexy. romantic!

  21. pedanticKarl says:

    Excellent article Marina.
I have been thinking about why most people say that you are teaching English, when it seems to me that not only are you teaching about the basics of language such as Latin, Greek and root and loan words from other countries, but you are teaching the history of words and history in general.

The way I look at it is this way. When all the public has is a hammer, then the public sees every problem as a nail. In other words, the public in general, especially Americans who are not taught in great numbers or with passion the subject of word origins as is being taught in Russia and other countries, then most people will only think of the teachings in terms of learning English which most people think of in terms of grammar and spelling.

  22. But you ARE teaching us English + Latin + French among other things. It’s a great idea you have put into motion. You should be proud!
