Today, March 8, 2010 is International Women's Day and
I am honoring one of the most special women, Marina Orlova

It is a major day of global celebration of women. In different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women to a celebration for women's economic, political and social achievements.

In many regions, the day lost its political flavour, and became simply an occasion for men to express their love for women in a way somewhat similar to a mixture of Mother's Day and St Valentine's Day. In other regions, however, the original political and human rights theme designated by the United Nations runs strong, and political and social awareness of the struggles of women worldwide are brought out and examined in a hopeful manner.

With greatest admiration and respect to the greatest woman in the Universe,
Marina Orlova also known as HotForWords

http://www.internationalwomensday.com/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Women%27s_Day

On the following link there is a video at the top of the page
from the news organization Russia Today, which describes
women's day in Russia. Women's Day had its roots as early as 1908
with women campaigning for voting rights and in 1913 Russian women
observed their first International Women's Day on the last Sunday
in February 1913 which later was moved to March 8.

Feb 22, 2010
Thank you to logischabbaubar a subscriber on this website for bringing this article to my attention.

The German news magazine called Spiegel Online has a section which covers articles of interest regarding what is happening on YouTube. Spiegle (translates to mirror) has done several articles on Marina. Today, they are covering 12 YouTube videos representing the unusual and what they term as "anti-program", which I presume could imply trend-counter trend videos that create lots of interest.

What: A 3 day conference of video makers in the online video industry.
Where: HYATT REGENCY CENTURY PLAZA, LOS ANGELES
When: JULY 9-11, 2010

WHAT IS VIDCON (from the VidCon website)
Vid-Con is a three-day conference bringing together the brightest lights in the billion-views-a-day community known as the online video industry. Join us at the first ever gathering of the most influential and popular independent video makers online and the communities that have made them a force in the world.

Online video has no analogous medium. It is an entirely new form of entertainment and it's spawning new genres and growing extremely quickly. We in online video have no interest in passive entertainment. We want to be engaged emotionally and socially. As the amount of content easily available becomes infinite, social interactions become by far the most significant way of sharing and experiencing video.

What: The 2nd Annual Shorty Awards
The Shorty Awards honor the best people and organizations on Twitter. These unique awards are for the Twitter community, by the Twitter community. The Shorty Awards are a worldwide effort to engage hundreds of thousands of Twitter users to identify the best people and organizations on Twitter.

When:
Nomination period: Now, Jan 11, 2010 through February 2010. A specific date has not been set.

Process:
Five nominees will be selected as finalists in each category in Feb. Winners will be determined by a combination of popular vote and by members of the Real-Time Academy of Short Form Arts & Sciences.

Voting
Only one person and one category per tweet. Voting for the same person in the same category more than once just replaces the text of your original vote.
Read the official rules here: shortyawards.com/rules

See examples of the voting below. Make sure you put a reason or the vote will not count.

To stay abreast of what is happening to the votes, go to the HotForWords profile on the Shorty Awards site. There you will see who has voted for the nomination so far. You can also use their voting box to cast your vote or use your favorite Twitter client.
shortyawards.com/hotforwords

How to Vote:
You MUST add a reason as I have shown in the example or else the vote will not count. The reason is checked for sincerity. You can either copy my example or add your own reason.

Long message Tweet Vote:
I nominate @HotForWords for a Shorty Award in #education because Marina makes learning about words fun! http://bit.ly/shorty

Short Message Tweet Vote:
#shortyawards @HotForWords #education learning about words is fun!

Notes:
At this time, the leader in the education category has 2,500+ votes. Get everyone to vote for HotForWords and that number can be exceeded.

You can also create a new category by replacing the word education in the tweets above. Read the official rules or you can also contact me if you have questions.
Today, Comments Search moves into Test Tube, the place where our engineers and developers test out new features and gather data and feedback before pushing them out to a wider audience. This feature allows you to search the comments people are making on YouTube in real time. The full comment will appear on a continuously updated results page, and "trending topics" indicates the hottest topics of conversation on YouTube at that particular moment.

Trending topics? They couldn't even come up with a different name?
The idea is to "find out what YouTube users are saying" about the more popular videos or topics of the day, YouTube said. It appears to be an easy way to track current trends on the site. Trouble is, YouTube comments are widely regarded as some of the least informed or helpful commentary on the Web.

@Captain Jack
I can see the image. It is a PNG image created by Mashable.
The generic URL is given above where it says; WHERE
The generic URL is: http://mashable.com/owa/

This is the specific URL that preselects the nominating category.

mashable.com/owa/votes?v=hotforwords&c=5

Note:
It looks like Mashable was/is having some problems.
One is allowed to vote for the nomination once a day,
but it wouldn't let me until today.
Their encoded URL is supposed to preselect the candidate as shown,
which is "hotforwords", and that appears not to work. One has to
manually key in "hotforwords"

Hello}}}{{{----The bubonic plague, leprosy and polio are thought of as diseases of the past -- things that might have had a part in history, but aren't around to infect us any longer.

Infectious influenza (H1N1) caused millions of deaths as a pandemic in 1918, but is also the source of the current swine flu pandemic.
(/ABC News)But a recent incident in China, where a town was quarantined for 10 days after three people died of a variant of bubonic plague, was just one of many reminders that these diseases have not vanished from the face of the earth.

While many think of these diseases as completely eradicated -- and they occur far less frequently than they used to in the United States -- they have managed to hang on.

"The microbes have hopes, dreams and aspirations just like human beings. In their case, it's to infect other people," said Dr. Howard Markel, a pediatrician and medical historian at the University of Michigan.

By clicking the Statistics & Data link below each video, YouTube is now displaying statistics in graphs and other formats.

It looks like the data is turned on by default for all videos uploaded prior to July 22 and can be turned off. When uploading a video, the stats can be turned on or off.

Being analytically oriented, of course I like the new information. I looked at a variety of videos and it is interesting to see the demographics for different videos and users.

Google Wave is a hot new topic.
It is a hot topic on twitter. The live search just keeps on scrolling.

Google Wave: A Complete Guide
May 28th, 2009 | by Ben Parr
This is an excellent Mashable article on wave that goes
into much more details and some new buzzwords.
Here are some of them.

- Wave: A wave, specifically, refers to a specific threaded conversation. It can include just one person, or it can include a group of users or even robots (explained below). The best comparison I can make is that it’s like your entire instant messaging (IM) history with someone. Anything you’ve ever discussed in a single chat or conversation is a wave.

- Wavelet: A wavelet is also a threaded conversation, but only a subset of a larger conversation (or a wave). It’s like a single IM conversation - a small part of a larger conversation and a larger history. Wavelets, though, can be created and managed separately from a wave.

- Blip (BLIP reviews): Even smaller than a Wavelet, a Blip is a single, individual message. It’s like a single line of an IM conversation. Blips can have other blips attached to them, called children. In addition, blips can either be published or unpublished (once again, it’s sort of like typing out an IM message but not yet sending it).

The Google search term "Google Wave" is on a sharp uptrend.
