This is a fantastic lesson. In fact, it is two lessons in one. First, Marina follows up on the word irony which has some controversy in terms of its usage and how its meaning is changing over time. Then, Marina discusses the expression "Three sheets to the wind", which ironically is not about the sheets that you might be thinking about, but, refers to the ropes used to control the setting of a sail in relation to the direction of the wind. You never want to refer to ropes on a ship, but refer to them as lines, halyards, and sheets. Hmmm, I wonder if I used the word ironically correctly? Oh well, time to look at the lesson again.

Three sheets to the wind!

Be sure to check out the video on irony, which is the video Marina
followed up on, above. This is also a great video to clear up the confusion
about the use of the word irony, which many of us misuse.

@fadeintoyou77
Thank you for reminding me about the "Male vs Female" video lesson.
That is a great lesson indeed and I loved that little dig that Marina
gave with a straingt face and the evil eye towards the end of the video
where she said;
"... the latin word male meaning evil...
is just an accident of history, isn't it?"
That was soooo funny.  <img src="http://www.hotforwords.com/forums/bb-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_lol.gif" title=":lol:" class="bb_smilies" />  Marina is brilliant.

Pedantic Karl, "inflammable" is a great example where she is just so natural- in her look and attitude.
I love her attitude in that- so earnest about finding out the etymology.
That's what makes her so great.
I just hope the new videos don't lose that great down-to-earth stuff.

I think some of the early videos can't be beaten.
They are classic Marina.
Stuff like "That's dope" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVKF8T7FURM
and "Colonel" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SoDOiaMWQBY are good examples.

Just looking at this early one, "Male vs Female" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLBjiPWnW-8&feature=channel , it's incredible how naturally beautiful she is there.
There's this undefinable mesmerising charm about her look in the "Male vs Female" video.

The GTA IV in russian was cool as well.
Didn't have a clue what she was saying but she seemed so cool and natural speaking in her mother tongue. It 'd be cool to see her incorporate Russian a bit more.

I really hate to say this, but today, even though the videos are still great, they are just too polished. The ironic thing is she looks a hundred times better when she's just herself.

This is in no way a criticism, but please Marina go back to your naturally beautiful look. <img src="http://www.hotforwords.com/forums/bb-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":)" class="bb_smilies" />

This is a fantastic lesson which is a favorite of mine since the lesson goes into the reason why the word flammable and inflammable mean the same thing. It is due to the latin prefix "in" which has two different meanings. Then, Marina demonstrates how another word with the prefix "in" means "not" or the negative of something. I love this lesson. You've got to watch this. Watch the ending where Marina says bye with a great smile and spirited passion.

@muggins

You are right about people who own these weapons for the wrong intentions. Okay in my situation I have a very good friend who is a firearms dealer and gun range owner who I met a few years back. He is very well versed on firearms use and safety, and is the one who turned me onto this. I consider him to be a mentor to me when it comes to firearms (plus he has a good take on life) and I only trust him and his close circle of friends when I go out to practice firing at the range or somewhere out in the field, Plinking as one would say. I've only brought 3 people with me to introduce them to the world of firearms and it's always been an exhilarating experience for everyone. I myself have never been in the military but my friend was in the Marine Corp back in the 70s and 80s (he retired as a gunny). He was the one who influenced me on my purchase of the AK47, You know like he said "Here, try this one" and i was sold on it. I don't know about it being cheap depending on what variance it is, they can run from 300.00 to 600.00 bucks generally, I paid 6 for mine, that's after he gave me a $400.00
discount. The AK does have a "Bad Reputation" of getting into hands of organizations and people with wrong intentions but what can you do. Believe me I know it takes great responsibility and discipline to own firearms.
There's nothing wrong with you having the curiosity flag go up about military weapons ownership.
I've shared some personal stories here on HFW (maybe too much info) on some but when I stumbled across Marina's lesson on the AK47,my initial reaction to the lesson was like "Oh shit, I own a AK47" and she gave an excellent and very informative presentation on this. But I'm not worried I got nothin to hide and I'm just tryin to keep it real. Oh and Btw your ? about My M16 malfunctioning. I don't own one and I've never fired one either, yet.

Sorry about the last couple of lines on my previous comment but I thought you may have been one of those hardcore anti-gun activist types. It can be hard to read where someone is coming from. Take it easy muggins. <img src="http://www.hotforwords.com/forums/bb-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":-)" class="bb_smilies" />

@ Venomrock67

I have no problem with any of that. What prompted my question about why you chose the AK47 is because the curiosity flag goes up about owning military weapons. It's not that it's wrong to own military weapons, but it can be wrong depending on the intentions. Plinking, which is essentially an exercise in weapons familiarity, and practice at the firing range are both valid and proper ways to keep firearms. The AK is a dependable firearm, and inexpensive. If you want a centerfire round for plinking, the AK cartridge is the cheapest. Keeping either the Ak47 and/or the M16 for home defense is valid, too. I've come across people who owned those weapons for the wrong reasons. It's good that you purchased a Russian made AK47. My friend, who's a hopeless cheapskate, bought a Chinese or Rumanian AK47, I forget which, and he's lucky to put a hole in the paper at 100 yards. I trained with the M16 at Fort Ord in 1971 and grew to like it. It never jammed on me, but it wasn't in combat conditions. Has your M16 ever malfunctioned on you?

@muggins

Yes it does say where it was made. On the receiver (that's the metal assembly located above the trigger) there are serial #'s and markings and a arrow inside a triangle pointing to the top of the triangle along with IZHMASH ARSENAL RUSSIA. But I think that the rifle could've actually been put together here in the US and that the receiver part was made in Russia. What I own is called RAK AK47 Red Classic. Technically a standard military issue is fully automatic, mine is semi-auto which tells me yes it's been modified to make it legal for US sale.

As for your ? on why I bought this. Why not. I'm a person who on occasion makes trips to the gun range and with a few friends go somewhere (gravel pits or somewhere of that nature) and as one would say just blow things up. Is there a point to this, probably not but to me it's fun. The answer to your last ? is yes, I also have an AR15 rifle and a Berreta Neos deluxe pistol, had a 44 magnum pistol but I sold that one, That one was a little too much for me to handle. So I hope you're not one of them ultra-liberals who feel that because (yes there are some irresponsible people out there) that everyone's right to bear arms should be taken away.

Thanks for that. That's a good start on words, philology. Marina has polished up and expanded her teaching skills in these last 2 years. She's definitely "show time",
and ready for her own TV show. Perhaps a late night movie show, where she can talk about some of the words in the movies during intervals.

@Venomrock67
Does it say on your AK47 where it was made? Also, why did you buy that weapon,
and do you own other weapons?

as Marina breaks down the word philology into it's root words.

My Favorite HFW video is AK-47
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8O35jrFkTUE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGBQQI-v_08
To me it's such an interesting lesson and subject matter and I think she does an excellent job on tackling the origin and history of this awesome weapon! It is a very fine and dependable rifle. I should know, I own one. I also put the one done in Russian too, even though I can't speak or understand this language, it's really nice to hear her speak in her native tongue. Oh and the pic of her with her AK-47 is killer. She looks like she's gonna Kick Some Ass! and take names, very sexy.

other Favorites:
1.Bang! Sniper http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43Qm5H_8wL0
Besides it being an excellent lesson, The little blooper reel at the end makes me Laugh every time. I don't know maybe it's just me.

2.Nightmare http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9F8vpyaykU
3.Vampire     http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oojpcqQHDoM
Dark subject matters that I like (believe it or not I do like lighter stuff too)
Okay with these three selections (there are also some others but too many to list) What I like about these also is how she's filmed herself with the closeup on her FACE, To me These lessons feel intimate, it could also be that she has a beautiful face to look at. <img src="http://www.hotforwords.com/forums/bb-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_razz.gif" title=":P" class="bb_smilies" />

4.GTW XVII  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKs7ZtxHeG0
I think this was the first video I saw on HFW site
I liked the impersonations (her take on them)  <img src="http://www.hotforwords.com/forums/bb-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":-)" class="bb_smilies" />

The following nine HotForWords videos are the ones that have received the most views in the last day, for videos that are older than one week old and represent the HotForWords collective conscious.

This is a very interesting lesson as the origin of the word nonchalant when traced back through the French, then Latin points to calere from which we also get the word calorie. Essentially, nonchalant refers to "not being hot for something" meaning lacking enthusiasm or lacking passion. This lesson got me to think about many things so this is one of my favorite lessons.

This is another one of those sleeper lessons and Marina teaches an important concept about the word several and how it relates to the word separate and how it changed its meaning, but in legal terms, the word several retains its original meaning. This is a great lesson and eye opener and one of my favorites.

Ridonkulous:
adj. An exaggerated form of ridiculous. Most likely a blending of ridiculous and donkey.

This HotForWords lesson on pigtails is another one of those sleeper lessons where Marina gives us a quick historical tour of the pigtail and shows us how it is related to being a sign of authority and tells us that she wears them to remind us of who is the boss.

I think Watch and Pusillanimous are tied for first or second. I cannot decide, but maybe second as I think for first place I'm pretty sure I'm going to say is not a lessson but a field trip Marina took ...smoooth, to-the-jacuuuzzi...with Bai Ling. I'm going under the hood to have another look. . .
.
.
***After further review, Marina & Bai in the Jacuzzi wins***
.
.
I think. Whatever the order, I'm more of an old school student who prefers the flavor of the more raw, longer classes back when Marina was just your average, ordinary, hot, russian girl-next-door fooling around with a camera in her SoCal apartment, sitting on the corner of her bed, or on the floor, with random interuptions by Gorby, and every now and then arguments with her off-camera seester.

--Watch--  http://www.hotforwords.com/2008/09/08/watch/
While she's always pretty, here her makeup looks the best and I like her rationale for and mannerisms during explaining why sometimes she wears watches, and the narrowed-eyed look thereafter she gives.

--Pusillanimous--
http://www.hotforwords.com/2009/02/26/some-retro-hotforwords-for-my-2-year-anniversary/
Because I'm a sucker for straight bangs and beer-maiden pigtails on girls in porno outfits showing glimpses of bikini tops saying the word 'naughty' in russian accents. Heck, it even happens to be my avatar.

--Marina & Bai Ling Go To The Jacuzzi--
http://www.hotforwords.com/2009/05/29/bai-ling-and-me-in-the-jacuzzi/
Specifically the segment featuring Marina's walk out, from 1:47 to 1:51, a total, crushable TEN. In truth, I'm sure it's an 11, if only the cameraman didn't have a case of shaky hands...but then who could blame him?

--Lollipop-- http://www.hotforwords.com/2008/12/26/lollipop/
I'm including lollipop for two reasons. Firstly, my underlying id surfaces and forces me to for obvious reasons. Secondly, any time the history of a lesson includes someone named Smeeeth, I cannot resist.

If Teacher would excuse my absences, I have a lot of homework to make up that my classmates didn't write down for me. So I might need a tutor session or two, actually. Yeah, I don't see any other way I could catch up to the class at this point. I'll buy us a Sundae.
