March 16, 2010
At 12:15 Marina tweeted:
"Going to tint my windows, getting too much sun and glare in my living room, impossible to work! Any advice?"

Marina,
I have mixed emotions about tinting as the cost can be high versus one's expectations and lack of flexibility. The results over the next summer may be disappointing in terms of defects, bubbles, peeling etc. despite claims of long term use.

Tinting
There are many types and grades of tinting which can cause misconceptions about the tinting can do. Other detriments are that it is not flexible in terms of adjusting the amount of shade and tinting, even the silver reflective type will absorb certain amount of heat that is transmitted back into the room. Tinting is certainly the easiest and quickest way to create some shade and reduce glare and if not satisfied, a hybrid approach of adding additional shading can be done later.

Blinds
Large slat Vertical blinds are ideal, but any kind of wood, vinyl or metal blinds is a good way to go as one can adjust the amount of light.
Here is an example from JC Penny.

Shade Cloth
External shade cloth is ideal since any absorption of heat is not radiated back into the room. I have shade cloth on the west side of my house which has cooled my house by 20 degrees F plus eliminating glare. Shade cloth needs to withstand the rigors of winds so it is not torn apart. One can get manually controlled shades or motor controlled. Home Depot, Lowes and other outlets will have these and local contractors will install them.

This is an Aussie web site that shows what is possible.
theshadecentre.com.au/awnings.html

This web site is also Aussie and show the kind of
internal shade cloth you may have seen in restaurants.
theshadeguys.com.au

Hybrid approach.
Although tinting is pretty maintenance free and is a quick solution, one could go with a hybrid approach. If the tinting doesn't live up to your expectations, then you could always add other treatments later such as inside roll up shade cloth or film or vertical blinds or drapes.

One problem with tinted windows is that you can't take them with you when you move. Shade cloth and blinds are not really transferred either as they are usually custom made, but in many cases, they can be utilized in a new home or can be retrofitted.

- - -

example of outside shade cloth

Today, March 8, 2010 is International Women's Day and
I am honoring one of the most special women, Marina Orlova

It is a major day of global celebration of women. In different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women to a celebration for women's economic, political and social achievements.

In many regions, the day lost its political flavour, and became simply an occasion for men to express their love for women in a way somewhat similar to a mixture of Mother's Day and St Valentine's Day. In other regions, however, the original political and human rights theme designated by the United Nations runs strong, and political and social awareness of the struggles of women worldwide are brought out and examined in a hopeful manner.

With greatest admiration and respect to the greatest woman in the Universe,
Marina Orlova also known as HotForWords

On the following link there is a video at the top of the page
from the news organization Russia Today, which describes
women's day in Russia. Women's Day had its roots as early as 1908
with women campaigning for voting rights and in 1913 Russian women
observed their first International Women's Day on the last Sunday
in February 1913 which later was moved to March 8.
Thank you to logischabbaubar a subscriber on this website for bringing this article to my attention.

The German news magazine called Spiegel Online has a section which covers articles of interest regarding what is happening on YouTube. Spiegle (translates to mirror) has done several articles on Marina. Today, they are covering 12 YouTube videos representing the unusual and what they term as "anti-program", which I presume could imply trend-counter trend videos that create lots of interest.

WHAT IS VIDCON (from the VidCon website)
Vid-Con is a three-day conference bringing together the brightest lights in the billion-views-a-day community known as the online video industry. Join us at the first ever gathering of the most influential and popular independent video makers online and the communities that have made them a force in the world.

Online video has no analogous medium. It is an entirely new form of entertainment and it's spawning new genres and growing extremely quickly. We in online video have no interest in passive entertainment. We want to be engaged emotionally and socially. As the amount of content easily available becomes infinite, social interactions become by far the most significant way of sharing and experiencing video.

Jan 18, 2010
General problems when using forms on any website.

Overview: Issues with submitting forms on any site
Recently, Marina was not able to get a video thumbnail to appear when she submitted a YouTube video link in FaceBook. Recently, other people are having problems filling out the application form on Date.com for a date with Marina. Over the last year, people have expressed issues on this site regarding adding a comment.

Possible solutions:
Marina solved her FaceBook issue by clearing her browser cache. In the past, my own experiences shows the following ways to resolve forms issues.

1. Close all other forms
If you have a problem submitting a form, see if you have any other forms open or if you are in the middle of filling out another form on another site. Close all other forms or websites to see if the problem goes away.

2. Close your browser and clear your browser cache / cookies.
Many of you don't want to clear your cookies as they retain your personalized login data and you hate to re-enter that. For you, clearing cookies will be the last thing that you will attempt. Clearing the browser cache periodically is a good thing to do as it removes any stray or corrupt or incomplete downloaded files.

Popup windows, Dialog boxes, Text boxes, Forms issues
One thing that I have noticed over the last year is, that not do I only have many browser Windows or Tabs open, but, I am multitasking with many sites at one time where I am filling in forms data in different browser windows. A few weeks ago I had trouble filling in a form on the DMV site and I noticed that I had started a comment on another site and left the comment box open. I had not submitted the comment yet. I closed several browser windows and I was able to work with the DMV forms. This kind of thing has happened many times to me.

Forms and pop-up windows overview
In user interface design, there is a concept known as MODAL WINDOW. In the Microsoft world, this is very common, and FireFox also has the ability to force a window to stay in front.

A model window is a child window that requires the user to interact with it first before they can return to the parent application. In other words, a modal window blocks your use of the main application until you have completed the task in the child window.

An example of this is when you view the images on this site via the shadow box. Go to the pictures pages, and when you click on a photo, the page is turned dark and the photo is displayed. You can't interact with the page until you click the photo or the "x" to return to the page.

Articles on modal windows:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modal_window
http://javascript.about.com/library/blmodal.htm

Now, strictly speaking, issues with forms would not necessarily come under the design issues of model windows. However, since all of the client side actions are JavaScript based, there are other JavaScript conflicts that can mimic issues that look like something is blocking the flow of information. For example, file locking can be an example of creating a conflict between two applications which will block the workflow of another application and there are many other types of programming issues that can cause forms problems.

Obviously, each situation is unique when a problem occurs, so, it is not always practical to isolate the offending window or application. The easiest solution is to close all browser windows, and then at least clear the browser cache.

Five nominees will be selected as finalists in each category in Feb. Winners will be determined by a combination of popular vote and by members of the Real-Time Academy of Short Form Arts & Sciences.

Voting
Only one person and one category per tweet. Voting for the same person in the same category more than once just replaces the text of your original vote.
Read the official rules here: shortyawards.com/rules

See examples of the voting below. Make sure you put a reason or the vote will not count.

To stay abreast of what is happening to the votes, go to the HotForWords profile on the Shorty Awards site. There you will see who has voted for the nomination so far. You can also use their voting box to cast your vote or use your favorite Twitter client.
shortyawards.com/hotforwords

How to Vote:
You MUST add a reason as I have shown in the example or else the vote will not count. The reason is checked for sincerity. You can either copy my example or add your own reason.

Long message Tweet Vote:
I nominate @HotForWords for a Shorty Award in #education because Marina makes learning about words fun! http://bit.ly/shorty

Short Message Tweet Vote:
#shortyawards @HotForWords #education learning about words is fun!

Notes:
At this time, the leader in the education category has 2,500+ votes. Get everyone to vote for HotForWords and that number can be exceeded.

You can also create a new category by replacing the word education in the tweets above. Read the official rules or you can also contact me if you have questions.

@pedanticKarl

I went to the top of the page clicked on dashboard and that went to my profile, I scrolled halfway down the page like you said and pasted a url (From Youtube) in the box marked website.
I tried it out but it still goes to the gravatar site. I'm using safari but that shouldn't make a difference.

I can see the link works here in the forum, but not when you click on my gravatar out in the comments section under the lessons it doesn't work there.

@Venomrock67
To personalize the link of your gravatar, you will want to add a
website URL to your profile of this HotForWords.com site.

How?
After you have logged into this site;
1. Click the Dashboard link (upper right of any page)
2. Click the Profile link in the upper left.
3. Scroll down to the middle where it says website.
4. Add whatever website you want. Make sure it starts with http://
Example: http://hotforwords.com

You don't need to click on any one's gravatar to see where it goes.
When you are on the main site, just hover your cursor over any gravatar and then look in the lower left of the FireFox browser to see the link. People that have not assigned a website will show the gravatar.com URL.

In this Forum, to see the associated web links, you hover over the user's name to see the website URL. For example, your name above does not have a URL, but if you hover over the Captain's name or mine, you will see the URL in the status bar lower left.

---

I'll post here first to see if I get a response.
My question is about the gravatar. I've noticed when you click on some people's gravatars instead of going to gravatar.com they have links to videos, personal webpages like maybe their facebook page, twitter page ect...
Can I still do that for my gravatar? Would appreciate the help if someone knows.

John posted a comment on another topic. He said:

my internet speed is very slow, beginning it was good recently i found my speed on http://www.ip-details.com/internet-speed-test/
it shows dwn load: 950 kbps,
upload: 216kbps
any idea to get it solve.

@John
Without knowing anything else about your PC and other circumstance, I would say that you are getting what you pay for. You are probably paying for a 1.5 Mb/s
connection and so the download speed that you are seeing would be consistent with what you are paying for. You may or may not know that the web based speed monitors will never be able to register your actual speed. Only a speed monitor located on your PC can do that.

For example: (I'm located in S. Calif, LA area)
I am paying for a 3 Mb/s DSL connection and using the link you provided, I get:
Download: 2553 kbps
Upload: 429 kbps

I also use NetPerSec to monitor my downloads. It registers my download speed exactly at 3000 kbps, which is what I am paying for. NetPerSec is no longer free and you can find it on the web.

Presuming that there is nothing wrong with your PC or other issues, then to increase your Internet downloads, you would need to get a faster connection like I have. I could even pay for a 6 Mb/s connection, but I don't need it as I am able to watch all HD videos without stuttering.

John, regarding your statement:
"... in the beginning it was good..."

How good is good?
Was your measured download speed higher then, than what it is now?
How much difference?
How long have you had your connection? What is it? DSL? Cable?

Lots of things can affect speed. My local community is constantly growing and the telephone guy is constantly adding and moving cables at corner B-box. Sometimes they mess up where lines get crossed, get cut and diminish the performance. Also, if your are running Windows and over time the Registry gets bigger and your PC is losing performance, which you observe as a more sluggish Internet connection.

It only seems like a small number of photos ended up in the software, most likely because I wanted to edit them with the Digital Image 9 software.

@Che
I presume that you mean that you have photos that were saved
in Microsoft's "Digital Image Suite 9" software program's native format.

This is a very common problem. I don't have that program and
I don't know anyone that does. Do you or a family member or friend
have that program? If so, then you would want to open those photos
in "Image Suite 9". I believe that program can Save / Export the photos
to JPG. If the program cannot export to JPG, you could view the photo
in full screen, then grab the photo with screen capture and paste into
another photo editing program.

If no one has the program, you could buy a used version from Amazon
for $16 (the original was around $129), but the risk is that like all
Microsoft crap, your photos will be one version different than all
the programs out there and that "Image Suite" might not work for you.

Here is the Amazon link to the product.
Also, try eBay.
http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Image-Suite-OLD-VERSION/dp/B000096L6T

Question?
What is the file extension of those photos?
Maybe I have a program that can view them.

How many photos do you have? A few or hundreds.
If you have more than 50, you may not want to convert them manually.
There are imaging conversion programs out there that will do batch conversion.
Most of them you can download for free.

If you could upload the file to some storage file storage server, then I could grab the file and see if I can convert it. If I can convert it, then I can tell you what program to use.

There are many free file storage servers and for many of them you don't need an account. You upload, then you get a special link which essentially is the password to the file.

You may have to lie about the extension before the file can be uploaded.
For example, if the photo file looks something like this; photo1.xyz
Then, in order to upload, I recommend that you add a known extension
that the server will like.
Change photo1.xyz to photo1.xyz.txt or alternatively to photo1_xyz.txt
Or convert photo1.xyz to photo1.xyz.zip or alternatively to photo1_xyz.zip

P.S.
Che tweeted that he owns the program. Great news!

Che, if you find out that you can't convert or save to JPG, find out what popular format you can save them to, such as BMP, TIFF, etc. Then, I can tell you what free program you can download to do a batch conversion from BMP to JPG for example.

@Capman911
Regarding Internet bandwidth
It looks like you may be bandwidth starved at certain times and under certain Internet conditions. If you were to constantly get 1611 kbps, you would be fine for watching videos in the Normal mode. Selecting HD, you would be bandwidth starved.

I am watching that same HotForWords video right now as you displayed above.
Using my NetPerSec graph, the download bandwidth in NORMAL (HD button is black) is 900 kbps. In HD (HD button is red) the bandwidth is 2,600 kbps. That means you are right on the edge of being able to receive the video and buffering is inevitable.

If you were to randomly pick other YT videos, you would see some videos use much lower bandwidth, let's say around 500 kbps. You would receive those without buffering.

Regarding PC performance
Your CPU usage is slamming into the 100% area.
I see you have 2 GB RAM. I only have 1 GB RAM and I am blazing.
Let's compare my system that is blazing and yours which is CPU starved.
Threads: You: 831 Me: 399
Processes: You: 70 Me: 36
Memory Paged: You: 103MB Me: 64MB
Cached: You: 1224MB Me: 433MB
Free Physical Memory: You: 7MB Me: 472MB

Look at the number of processes you are running. Way too many.
Look at the Free Physical memory. You only have 7 MB left. I have 472 MB and I have less RAM to begin with.

On the surface one might argue and say that since you have more memory you can afford to load more programs. The problem is that those programs can also eat up CPU horsepower. So, when people argue that you need more RAM is wrong unless one has a specific reason, such as using certain programs that require it. You are probably using it mainly for the Internet, email and a few other tidbits none of which should be loaded unless you need them.

My RAM usage is way under 50%. Yours is over 50%. Look at the number of Processes you are running. Most people run about 70 and that's why they can't watch videos without buffering. Get rid of your Processes you don't need and I can tell you you don't need 40 of them. If you bring your processes down to 40, your system will be blazing. I can tell you how to do that in the Registry. You will want to remove the items in the RUN folder in the Registry. If you have never done it before, be careful or your system may crash. I can give you instructions and you need to follow them precisely.

Are you using an external video card as opposed to the one on your motherboard? If I remember correctly you added one last year? If you are using an external video card, then you should have no problems once you remove the processes that are starving your system.

2. Click Task Manager
3. Click the Performance tab
4. Go to YouTube and watch a video.

@CampKohler
I'm confused by your question.

1. Do you mean:
I am logged in and viewing comment #2 on page x.
Then I log out.
When I log back in, I expect to be at comment #2 on page x.

2. Or, do you mean:
While I am logged out, I am viewing comment #2 at the bottom of page x
and when I log in, I expect to be returned to comment #2 at the bottom of page x.

In either scenario, how do you log in / out without leaving comment #2?
Don't you have to scroll back up to the top of the page to log out/in?

Can you give some more details?

What does work, and I am wondering if this is what you might mean, is this:
Regardless of the login state, if I am viewing comment #2 on page x, then when I navigate away from the page by clicking on Yahoo on my personal toolbar, then when I use the "Back" button in my browser, I am returned to the comment and page that I left.

I don't recall the scenario that you describe, and if it did exist, I can only speculate by saying that perhaps the recent pagination of about 80 comments per page had an effect?

Another type of scenario that I observed goes like this:
1. I am logged out and I am viewing the Home page.
2. When I log in from the Home page, I am taken to the Latest Video lesson page.
3. If I am logged out, and I am on any page other than the Home page,
then, when I log in, I remain on the page that I was viewing prior to logging in.

Given that scenario, perhaps I might speculate and say that defaulting to the top of the current lesson, is a way to give everyone the opportunity to be on the same page, as it where. Just a guess and maybe Marina can offer an explanation.
