Page http://www.hotforwords.com/html-in-comments should be improved to make it technically correct in two respects.

" < blockquote>text in this pretty box< /blockquote>" implies that the purpose of the tag is to make the text pretty. That is not the designed purpose of the tag, which is to display large amounts of quoted text without using quotation marks, so that the reader will understand that the text is indeed a quotation. It is standard practice in print media to do this by indenting both sides of the text from the margins, and the blockquote tag is designed to emulate that. To say that it is there merely to change the appearance (prettyness) is contrary to standard usage and can do nothing but implant that in users' minds. This should not be done any more than saying a period should appear at the beginning of a sentence. I propose you reword it as follows: "< blockquote>Text in the blockquote box is understood to be enclosed in quotation marks.< /blockquote>
Text in the blockquote box is understood to be enclosed in quotation marks.
It should be used to quote blocks of text, especially those larger say than a sentence or two."

"< code>You can write fancy code here< /code>" again implies that this tag is merely for appearance's sake, i.e. to make things fancy. The code tag is to temporarily shift to a font that may be used to separate the text from the words surrounding it, say to express programming code, field names and the like. I propose you reword it as follows: "< code> A field name < /code>
A field name
Use this special typewriter-style font for programming code, field names or other items you wish to stand out from the normal text without having to enclose them in quote marks."

In short, you, as instructor, should be serious about the correct use of tags. The users will, of course, be irreverant, disrespectful, undisciplined, loosey-goosey and do whatever they feel like, but that's their problem.

Marina, I would like to suggest that all embedded links be underlined, which is standard on the Web. Currently, the only indication of a link is the color of the text. The contrast between the blue being used and black is not that great. I suppose this was done for aesthetic reasons, but I think that should be secondary to usability. If one's color vision is not perfect, it makes it harder to recognize links. And I suppose the reader software that blind persons use will not recognize the links at all.

I think it would be super cool if Marina had a running visitor meter placed somewhere on her site that showed number of views she gets for her videos on YT. Just an idea <img src="http://www.hotforwords.com/forums/bb-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":-)" class="bb_smilies" />

Numero Uno, as I have commented before, is to change that oh-so-less-than-flattering header graphic of Marina. I sent suggested revised graphics that were much better, long ago. I also sent better site links that weren't so sexy and could be used by other business sites. Sad that no one ever responds, although, months ago, Marina did say the graphics were sitting on her desktop and she wasn't sure what to do with them. I doubt they are still there. <sniff>.

I know like Jack said the site editing is not over. But one more problem to look at is that when a person posts a picture it doesn't show up in the old style like an embedded picture, but instead it comes up like a web page picture. I think Matt Mullenweg needs to do some more work on his newest Word Press release. It reminds me of the blue screen of death from Microsoft.

The Ajax edit screen now pops back to the blog entry after an edit as one would expect. No longer do you have to click the browser's
Back
button to get out of the
Saving...
state. This started happening about 11AM PDT.

I am enjoying all the recent improvements!! The new fora add a wonderful, huge new dimension to the place. The new text font, shorter indent and smaller size make deeper threads not nearly the eyesore they once were. Only thing is the edit bug on the main site, but I'm sure a {team of experts} is on the task! <img src="http://www.hotforwords.com/forums/bb-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_biggrin.gif" title=":D" class="bb_smilies" />

COMMENTS REPLY FONTS SHOULD BE THE SAME AS ORIGINAL MESSAGE FONT

The fonts for all replies are now smaller than the original posts in the lesson comments. This is not an improvement. Can they all be made to have the same size for better readability?

FORUM COULD BENEFIT FROM HIERARCHICAL MESSAGE ARRANGEMENT
ADD DATE-TIME GROUP TO FORUM MESSAGES

Messages in the forum are displayed chronilogically, with no relationship between the messages shown. Authors must make these relationships known to readers by their own methods, e.g. by stating that they are replying to [author's nickname] message of [date-time], which is clumsy and time consuming. The arrangement used in lesson comments whereby readers can easily see which reply goes with which message would be most useful. Is this possible?

Messages currently state how much time has elapsed from the time it was posted, probably to eliminate any confusion due to the multiple time zones of the readers. To use the posting time as a reference, it would be helpful to display the actual time posted, even if the time is from a different time zone than most of the readers. The time zone of the server, say, could be appended so that it would be clear which time zone was being used; it is more important to have some time rather than no time.

MISLEADING E-MAIL REPLY NOTIFICATION TEXT MAY BE SENT

The Website sends an E-mail notifying a message author that a reply has been made to his message. It is sent at the time Submit Comment is clicked. Unfortunately, the reply may not be in it's finished form at that time; the reply author may desire to edit the reply and has the right to do so for five minutes, and it could be revised to any extent or, in effect, deleted entirely (by editing down to a single period). As it stands, the notifications may be inaccurate, and, by virtue of such limitation, serve merely to inform that a reply has been made. This should be fixed if possible.

I suggest that the E-mail notification be witheld until the edit window timer expires. At that time, the author's intent (assuming he accurately represents his intent in the finished reply) will be known, and more importantly, permanently fixed and an accurate notification will result.

If the transmit time cannot be modified, I propose these less desirable alternatives:

1. No reply text be transmitted; only the notification language should be sent. This will eliminate the sending of an incorrect reply text. The author would have to use the included link to read the reply.

2. Words of warning be visible at the top of the notification: "NOTICE: THE WORDING OF THE REPLY SHOWN BELOW IS PRELIMINARY AND MAY NOT ACCURATE; IT MAY HAVE BEEN EXTENSIVELY MODIFIED BY THE AUTHOR BEFORE FINAL POSTING. PLEASE USE THE LINK BELOW TO VIEW THE ACTUAL REPLY."

This topic is for suggesting improvements to the Website that are not directly related to a specific site revision.

A separate dated topic should be started for each revision and any suggestions related to the revision should be posted there. Users will have to consider their suggestions and determine if they belong in a specific revision's topic or are unrelated and belong here. General suggestions should not be stuffed into a revision's topic in hopes they will receive special attention.
