It's a very interesting question. What do you think, which language, English, Russian or a mix of both, does Marina use to think about daily issues?

And in general, how is it about language used in mental processing by people who are bilingual or who just have used a foreign language in a new living place everyday for years? Marina is a very interesting case to examine this problem as she has not only lived in the USA for years, but also works with the English language.

Does she now use English in thinking about everything or does she switch the languages depending on a subject of thinking?

What do you think or know about that?

The world's top discussion moderators have developed successful tools for keeping online miscreants from disrupting conversation. All are rooted in one psychological insight: If you simply ban trolls—kicking them off your board—you nurture their curdled sense of being an oppressed truth-speaker. Instead, the moderators rely on making the comments less prominent.

Patient Zero here is Slashdot, the tech site that pioneered one elegant way to police trolls: crowdsourcing. Slashdot has an automated system that randomly picks a handful of readers and gives them, for a day or so, the power to describe others' comments with terms like "funny" or "off topic." Those descriptions are translated into a score from -1 to 5. Readers can set their filters so they see only comments with high ratings—and trollery effectively vanishes. One academic study found that the majority of Slashdot readers filter out comments rated 2 or lower. Indeed, the concept of crowd-voting has worked so well that sites as high-traffic as the The New York Times now use it.

How can you help to tame the comment troll?

HELL EXPLAINED BY CHEMISTRY STUDENT

The following is an actual question given on a University of Washington chemistry mid-term. The answer by one student was so 'profound' that the professor shared it with colleagues, via the Internet, which is, of course, why we now have the pleasure of enjoying it as well:

Bonus Question: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic (absorbs heat)?

Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's Law (gas cools when it expands and heats when it is compressed) or some variant.

One student, however, wrote the following:

First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So we need to know the rate at which souls are moving into Hell and the rate at which they are leaving. I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to Hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving. As for how many souls are entering Hell, let's look at the different religions that exist in the world today. Most of these religions state that if you are not a member of their religion, you will go to Hell. Since there is more than one of these religions and since people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that all souls go to Hell. With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in Hell to increase exponentially. Now, we look at the rate of change of the volume in Hell because Boyle's Law states that in order for the temperature and pressure in Hell to stay the same, the volume of Hell has to expand proportionately as souls are added.

This gives two possibilities:
1. If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will increase until all Hell breaks loose.

2. If Hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in Hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until Hell freezes over.

So which is it?
If we accept the postulate given to me by Teresa during my Freshman year that, 'It will be a cold day in Hell before I sleep with you,' and take into account the fact that I slept with her last night, then number two must be true, and thus I am sure that Hell is exothermic and has already frozen over. The corollary of this theory is that since Hell has frozen over, it follows that it is not accepting any more souls and is therefore, extinct.. leaving only Heaven, thereby proving the existence of a divine being which explains why, last night, Teresa kept shouting 'Oh my God.'

THIS STUDENT RECEIVED AN A+.

lol! \o/

I think she pronounces it in this manner on purpose (now, after long years of using English). It's her trademark. If she started saying "students" (and some other words) without any palatalization, people might think she couldn't be Marina Orlova.

(Here we have samples of different Russian people's accents in English and many of them can deal with a tendency to palatalize consonants - the example for people saing "it's her accent, she can't do anything with it").

The word 'Engrish' referred initially to the usage of English by Asians, especially Japanese and Chinese (the term derives from the way that average Japanese pronounces the word English). Now it's often additionally used as a slang term describing poor translations of various information boards, manuals, menus and other messages all around the world (but still especially in Asia).

I think that are the two most popular sites collecting photos of funny Engrish texts:
http://www.engrish.com/
http://engrishfunny.com/

Here I found an example not from Asia, but from my own backyard - from a train in Poland:

I think, there should be something like "In case of emergency, turn the hand brake to the right until resistance is felt. A penalty applies for any unjustified use". (On the other hand, in the polish railways even many inscriptions in the mother tongue sound ridiculous).

But Asian slip-ups are much funnier, due to the total incompatibility of language systems.

"Forbid stool and urine, spit in everywhere"

The MANICURE SET for REAL men!

What other examples of funny bad translations around the world do you know?

If there's one thing all people have in common, it's that we want things--and we often feel disappointed and dissatisfied when we don't get them.

You can't always get what you want, but you can get where you're headed if you just keep going. In the meantime, these suggestions may help you feel more content with the reality you have right now:

1. Acknowledge where you'd like to see improvements. If you're unhappy, there's a reason. Identifying what you'd like to change is the first step toward becoming more satisfied.

2. Take one step every day toward changing what makes you unhappy. The most important part of creating change is maintaining forward momentum. Spend a little time every day creating the life you want, and it will eventually become a habit that transforms your life.

3. Set small, attainable goals. This isn't to say you shouldn't set large goals. If you set small ones, as well, you'll allow yourself abundant opportunities to feel proud of what you've accomplished.

4. Do something you always wanted to do, even if on a much smaller scale. If you've always dreamed of playing piano, book your first lesson. When you go after your passions, you generally feel more fulfilled, whether you impress other people or not.

5. Make a list of your accomplishments and add to it daily. You may not realize just how many of your goals you've already reached.

6. Identify ways you've improved people's lives for the better. We've all had our It's a Wonderful Life George Bailey moments. You have made a huge difference in at least one person's life. If you can't see that yourself ask the people closest to you.

7. Practice mindfulness--focusing fully on whatever is in front of you. When you root yourself in the present moment, contentment is more attainable. It's far easier to be happy in one moment than it is to feel satisfied about decades of events.

8. Shift your focus from things you do to who you are. Even if you're not pleased with your professional advancement, you can still feel proud of how far you've come as a person--the way you make people laugh, how you're always patient and understanding.

9. Redefine satisfaction. You may think everything needs to be perfect for you to feel fulfilled. Since you likely will always strive for more in life--no matter how far you go--why not learn to feel satisfied within the process of becoming?

10. Try one new thing every day. One of the most common ways to feel stagnant is to fall into a routine. Trying something new gives you a sense of excitement and adventure. When you feel truly alive in a moment, you're less likely to dwell on things you think are missing.

And lastly, share your wisdom to feel helpful within your social circle.

Hey, HotForWords fans!
It's about time we got to know each other a little better...
Don't you think?!

I don't want to be the first to "Show my face".
I promise I will though, right after you...
So you will have the honor of being first!

No one is judging, and this is not a beauty contest!
I think we'd all like to have a face to associate with people we reply to.

With all the carbon and the march of change, modern music was ushered in by Les Paul...microphones and stylus too...needles of love!!!Les Paul & Mary Ford: Alabamy Bound /Darktown Strutters Ball
...History is the GEnUS....or...Working alone in his rooming house he fashioned a new type of transmitter which he called a "loose-contact" transmitter, a type of microphone, which increased the volume of the transmitted voice. That he was able to do this while still possessing only a rudimentary knowledge of electricity and physics was quite astounding. When the members of the newly-formed American Bell Telephone Company were advised that a young and entirely unknown man in Washington had submitted a caveat (Berliner wrote it himself without the aid of a patent attorney) to the Patent Office covering a new transmitter, they could hardly believe it. Thomas Watson, the Mr. Watson of telephone fame, was sent to Washington to make inquiries. He returned such a glowing report of the transmitter and of Berliner himself that the company offered to buy the rights to the invention and to hire Berliner as a research assistant. For the next seven years, Berliner was employed by the ABT Co., first in New York City and then in Boston. During those years Berliner worked on numerous problems associated with the fledgling telephone industry and developed into a first-class theoretical electrician.

Emile (originally Emil) Berliner was born in Hanover, Germany, on May 20, 1851. He was one of thirteen children born to Samuel and Sarah Fridman Berliner, two of whom died in infancy. His father was a merchant and a Talmudic scholar, and his mother was an amateur musician.[God bless U all++]

Hs4Mm on "Intelligence is Sexy: What does that mean?"

Intelligence is Sexy: What does that mean?

{In the following, "man" is sometimes used in a generic sense, and refers to "male and/or female human being".}

1) In ancient Greece, women were not considered fully human, and were treated as second-class citizens. And men had sexual relationships with other men. In time, women started doing things that demonstrated their intelligence. It was only after such demonstrations that the Greeks changed how they viewed and treated women, including viewing them as being romantically and sexually desirable. For much more details, I recommend the lectures Body & Soul: Romantic Love in Sculpture (Sculpture as a Vision of Man'S Romantic & Sexual Nature). The issue of "Intelligence is Sexy" appears at about 30 minutes into lecture 2.

2) The preceding just provides a historical fact that shows the role of intelligence in considering a person as being sexually desirable. But it does not explain this aspect of Man's nature.

3) People acquire their sexual tastes by the conclusions they come to while growing up. These conclusions determine their sexual tastes irrespective of whether the conclusions are true or false. For example, I had a friend in school who at the age of about 12 did not know that girls had vaginas -- he actually thought babies were born from the anus (and the absence of the penis helped with enabling the anus to expand); and this was in India where one can see naked children on the streets. And this past August, a woman married a fair-ground ride, the 1001 Nachts. Clearly, she does not consider intelligence as being sexy.

4) We can relate (3) and (1): In general, the Greeks valued intelligence. During the time they viewed women as being unintelligent, they found women sexually unattractive. Later, they discovered that women were capable of intelligent action, and started romanticizing those women who exhibited intelligence (and women in general as beings capable of being intelligent, and hence of being romantically attractive).

5.a) You may have seen people put up videos of themselves doing silly dances -- many of which involve the creator being the first to decry the work with remarks to the effect that he was just trying to be funny, and please do not take his efforts seriously: if he really considered his work not worthy of serious consideration, why did he put it up in the first place?

5.b) For contrast, consider this video by ZOMGitsCriss: one can see intelligence in action in the music (in the mix of pieces from Shakira and in the added sound effects; both might be from the "Live Off The Record" tour), the control of the camera (what it shows and at what zoom) and ZOMGitsCriss' control of her body in sync with the music and in what she presents to the camera.

Which of (5.a or 5.b) one finds sexy would depend on whether or not one values intelligence (and values one's own time spent watching the video).

6) Irrespective of what one finds sexually attractive, what one seeks to express by the sex act is what one feels deeply as being one's relationship to existence: this could be hatred for one's life and for this world, or it could be a celebration of oneself and of one's ability to deal with this world; or it could be anything in between. And what one seeks to express will dictate one would consider as being suitable for use for such expression (i.e., what one would find sexy). So it would be people who value intelligence -- those who consider existence as being amenable to them for understanding and for controlling for their goals -- who would find Intelligence as being Sexy.

PS: Preceding is an elaboration of a comment I made earlier (61, 61.1 of "Rude Tube").

Hello HotForWords fans,
In the context of the recent HotForWords video lessons, "Geek" and "Nerd", and since Marina calls herself a geek, I would like this forum to be a discussion of technology and society as a whole.

I prefer that this not turn into a religious flame war pitting one technology against the other, but do state your opinions, preferences and biases and why you prefer one technology over another. Do discuss sociological impacts, benefits and detriments. Lets keep the discussion civil as much as I have some choice words about the subject and I know you do to.

I prefer that this not be a nerd forum where technical minutiae is discussed as there are way too many other forums that do that already.

I encourage aLx, buzzword and others who have an understanding of society, history, anthropology, biology, liberal arts and languages to contribute their opinions.

Some things to ponder:
1. What circumstance caused you to become a nerd/geek. Has anyone become un-geeked?
2. Has technology delivered what it has promised or is this just a dream?
3. How has technology benefited you and / or society?
4. In what ways has technology harmed society?
6. What is your preference and why? (Mac, PC, Linux, browsers, cell phone, PDA, other)
7. What makes you angry or passionate about technology?
8. Provide links to interesting technology events, expos, news, blogs, videos and articles.

Keep in mind, you and I are not going to solve anything here. However, do include items of human interest where someone has made an impact through technology either for good or bad.

Perhaps, Marina should be nominated for the Nobel Peace Price for contributing in a positive way, having created the HotForWords community. In the words of Alfred Noble; "The Peace Prize should be awarded to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations".

'PUN MY WORD

This forum is for HFW fans who delight in wordplay: puns, bilingual puns, doble-entendres, folk etymology, tall tales about words, daffynitions, humorously creative new meanings for old words, funny new words to describe our changing times and technology. Posts can be as corny as "The Mountain Man's Guide to Computer Terminology" ("Log on": part of the phrase "throw another log on the fire, it's getting chilly!"), or as subtly sophisticated as Fractured French ("Chargé d’affaires = The cost of infidelity")

We could try games such as "guess the pun," e.g.
Q: "What's the slogan of the Sierra Club's campaign to extend Second Amendment rights to grizzlies?"
A: "Support the right to arm bears."

Also, I realized that my "Fractured Philology" posts ("eufemmism: something nice women say") needed their own spot when it was pointed out that the people who think SHIT is an acronym ("Ship High In Transit") might take them seriously.

Which brings me to an important point: THIS IS NOT A FORUM FOR SERIOUS SCHOLARSHIP, UNLESS ACCOMPANIED BY A LUDICROUS OR FRIVOLOUS TWIST. ANYONE CAUGHT TARNISHING THIS FORUM'S REPUTATION BY POSTING RESPECTABLY STUDIOUS COMMENTS WILL BE FLAMED ON SIGHT! This is for the protection of all participants, so that we can indulge our flights of fancy without worry that anyone will take us seriously.

Acknowledgement goes to Bob Morris for inspiring this forum with his "Poulet vous francais?" comeback to the question, "Why do we say [pardon my French] when we use fowl language?" Thanks also to Chemikal for his idea of "Elliptic English" ("prudent - prune extract toothpaste") and his motto/slogan, "Let’s mess with the words shall we?"

To conclude with a quote from 0ceans1ze "Well, my coffee break is over = Café au lait"

Hello.

Good day,I know this message will come to you as a surprise since we have not met or known each other before.I apologise for the inconviniences and pray that this request meets you in good conditions.I need your help. I am Miss Dianne Blou, the only daughter of late Dr Jean-Quassi Blou, a renouned cocoa merchant from Cote Dívoire in West Africa.I was before the death of my father,a medical student of the university of Abidjan,Cote d Ivoire.Since he died,i have been with my uncles
but they have made thing to be more difficult for me because of their eyes on my late father’s properties.I even have to stop schooling because they don't care about me anymore. Before the death of my father, he deposited USD4.8M (Four million, Eight hundred thousand dollars) in a fixed deposit(domicillary) account in my country which I am the next of kin. After his burial, i approached the bank director where the money was deposited to find out how i can have access to the money to take care of my needs but was told by the director that my father had an agreement with them that requires me to present to the bank a guardian who must be of foriegn origin to stand on my behalf for the claim before they can release the fund or be released to me directly at the age of 28 years or above.I don't want to stay here anymore as my security here can not be guaranteed.

Please i need your help in the following ways.
1.To stand as my guardian and the new beneficairy of the fund.
(2).To provide an account where the money will be transfered to.
(3)To make arrangement for me to come over to meet you in your country.
(4)You will also help to look for a good and lucrative business where the fund will be invested.

Please if you are willing to help me kindly get back to me.I am willing to offer you 25% of the total sum as compensation for your effort after the sucessful transfer of the money into your overseas account.

Have a nice day and God bless as you come to my assistance.

Sincerely,

Last week I was pick (among 1,000+ other tweeters)to beta test a new feature in twitter called Lists. Now you can create up to 20 list in your account and in those list can have up to 500 people in each list. This is a feature the twitter team should have added a year ago. I found the favorites list useless for its original purpose. So what I did was turned it into a makeshift list. The reason I did this was so I could follow as many people as I wanted to without losing track of tweeters I follow closely. Now I can use favorites for what it was intended for, listing favorite tweets.

So what is the impact of Lists?

1. You'll follow a lot more people. Why? Because you'll find someone who has done a really great list, say, of programmers, and you'll add the whole list. You will find that Twitter will get way more interesting because of it.

2. This will bring a raft of new searching and discovery mechanisms.

3. Directories based on numbers of followers are dead. Services like WeFollow are pointless.

4. Anything to do with numbers of followers is now dead. Yeay! WHAT KIND OF LISTS you are on will be far more important. Who cares if someone has 200,000 followers if no one will put him on a list because they don't like their Tweet style?

5. Follow Friday is dead! Lists are far superior. Now your lists will take over this practice.

6. Twitter will have scaling problems almost immediately due to these lists because lots of people will start using Twitter more again.

The system is still a bit buggy and has other issues that need to be addressed.

1. Your sidebar can only display 20 lists. First it will display your lists, then others but you won't be able to control the order or really anything about the list. You can't even change the spelling on the lists.

2. If you click on "listed" on your home page, you'll see a list of the lists that have added you. Unfortunately only the last 20 will be listed and you can't see others. If you have more than 200 lists following you, you can't see those lists.

I mention before that twitter will die due to the onslaught of other networking service i.e. FaceBook and Google Wave. With the advent of this new feature, I think it will extend the life of twitter, but it's no cure to its woes. What we will see now is a race to get on high profile or celebrity lists.

If you have the List feature, what is your opinion about this new tool?

Hey guys.. I've been working for days (in my sickness) on making the website more friendly. I like the look of the comments now.. they look clean.

I also widened the site by 20 pixels... which gives me a little more room to put things.

I still have to widen the forums.

BUT.. I need your help!

Where can I make it obvious that there are new posts? Right now it's tough to figure out when I have new posts and it makes it difficult for me to communicate with you guys.

Right now I have a little box on the homepage and one on the sidebar.. but they really don't stand out. I can't replace the lesson box on the right as that's the most important part.

I even tried going with the blog format for the site over the weekend, but that ended making my site look a lot less than it was.

So.. any suggestions would be welcome!

Thanks so much!
