Appologies if a topic like this already has a home here, but I'm not about to go in-search-of in the forums.

There has been displeasure and complaints over the length and/or quality of the lesson videos lately, as they've been shorter and simpler due to changes on YouTube that have, I suppose, reduced the time a video can be in order for it to register in the most popular rotation, or whatever. Anyway, the point is Marina is doing whatever it is she thinks she has to do to optimize her visiblity on YouTube, which obviously is a much bigger megaphone from which to lure students than the off-chance they happen to find http://www.hotforwords.com by any other means. In diluting the lessons, many of those who have congregated here at HFW have become disappointed.

So, let's start with a place to collect ideas that might help. I know I have, in the comments/homework area, made a few suggestions along the lines of content for the site (not just words for lessons that go ignored, ha): a pay side of the site, though what sort of content would exist there, I don't know; greater school-related elements akin to teacher's pets, such as detentions, demerits, honor roll, dean's list, Head's list, remedial class, honors class, tutor sessions maybe -- realistically, they may only serve as cute things to do like scribbling "HF_HFW stay after class for detention" on the chalkboard, but I can see where climbing to the head of the class would merit perks like colored boxes or whatever people care about. Though, all this would just serve to keep those who will always be at HFW.com anyway.

--Except for tutor sessions. This once could be exist as another aspect of HFW and YT as it would, logically, be a live online chat or broadcast, or webchat...what are those called? One of the great things about HFW is that Marina interacts with her audience in a very actively. From frequent comments and furious tweeting to shooting lessons in response to our word requests and, one lucky boy even got a phone call for winning whatever GTW Game challenge! It's simple, more Marina is always better. The next step along that path, in my view, would be having Marina conduct live video chats, or whatever they're called. Maybe it's not technically or financially feasible; I wouldn't know. But if you're reading this Marina, perhaps it's something for your consideration. Say, like a monthly live video chat? If you advertize that on your YouTube entries, I think that could result in an increase in subscribers to your channel there or students in your class here. You could lecture or discuss current events or goof off, whatever. I just think it's a good idea and a simple way of increasing how accessible you already are to your audience, who would love it.

--I know I've read others' suggestions about how you could shoot/publish multiple lessons so you could serve the YouTube nazis and the pedantry class at HFW. I mean, I can see doing a normal lesson on, say, [canoodling], and then just editing it down to get under whatever cap it is YT is enforcing, since, doing two videos for two different venues seems daunting and time consuming. But, well, I dunno I'm sure you've thouht of this as well.

--I do, however, think it'd be funny if you simply asked for donations via paypal just to see what happens, lol.

--Someone mused about an online store that featured not just calendars but shirts and mugs. I would buy a shirt. I think t-shirts are always in demand, but maybe you have had more insightful advice on the business of merchandise versus money spent elsewhere.

OK, that's enough time for my initial deliberation on the matter. Oh, wait, no it's not, I almost forgot. . .

--Probably the simplest and quickest and most effective thing we could be doing is going to YouTube and subscribing to her channel there and rating the video or commenting there, or watching the videos there, or whatever it is that increases videos on the totem pole of youtube. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I am not a youtube member, but if many are like me, or for those that are, hey just go to YouTube and be good HFW agents and put a shoulder on the tackle.

Now, that's enough brainstorming for me for now. I like the monthly Tutuor/live-video-chat-session idea. If you like it, say so or improve on it or pine for it, beg for it. Heh, Marina could lecture or discuss the newsworthy as I said, or she could, and this (I suggested a long time ago for a lesson) would be funny, conduct storytime where she simply reads literary passages that she fancies or that are requested. I can just see her having fun with this.

    Well, hope this effort helps.

    Next.

I heard Marina mention in a twitter tweet that her book is scheduled to hit the stores in August 2009 {Harper Collins} (w/lots of photos!). I got to thinking how cool it would be if Harper Collins asked Marina to do an audio books on tape version for cassette, ipod, etc. That would be such fun to listen to!

    Hi Marina,

Well, the Contact page says that this is the best way to reach you, but I feel like I’m inserting something [non-sequitur] to the lesson…

I have been a student here now for only about a week, and have had a chance to look around the site and view a number of lessons here and on YouTube.

What brought me here was viewing you on The O’Reilly Factor last week - I’d seen you before on the show and always enjoyed the appearances - this time I decided to go and actually see you at your [Craft].

Marina, what you have done here is simply BRILLIANT. Informative, Fun, Entertaining…

You have created a specialty for yourself that will never be duplicated by someone else, because it is [unique] to your talents - Educationally, Stylistically, Visually - your personality is very engaging, you have great comedic instincts, and you seem to be a very genuine, sweet, and decent person. I’d go so far as to call you the ‘Anti - Paris Hilton’!

No wonder you have so many [devoted] and [ardent] Students!

I think that what you are doing is [significant], and can take you a very long way - perhaps for the rest of your life if you want it to.

Yes, Intelligence is Sexy - and you have made yourself the [Poster Girl] for that idea.

I’d like to give you my perspective as a new Fan, seeing your situation, and reading around the Website…

    1. I see your body of videos and what you have been doing as creating and compiling a ‘Video Dictionary’ - and you make [chut-chut] [(phonetic spelling)] money when someone looks up a word! (and clicks an Ad I guess…) As you expand your word definitions, you add to the Dictionary - and that book will be of interest to people for years and years - I suspect long after you are gone. Keep this in mind! I much prefer watching you to pouring through the OED - and I know many others feel the same.

    2. Your main concentration so far has seemed to be in general interest definitions and idioms for a ‘younger’ audience - both entertaining and interesting - 195 Million views is [nothing to sneeze at]!

    3. In reading the posts here on the changes in YouTube’s ranking methods - I see clearly that your [analysis] suggests the [solution]. EVERYONE in cyberspace is trying to [solve] the problem on how to get people to their content. Most everyone knows that your ranking on search engines goes up the more you are linked from someone else’s site.

    4. I can think of NO ONE who is in a better position to be permanently linked to Thousands of MAINSTREAM websites than YOU, Marushka! Forget getting 195 million hits - How about BILLIONS (I’m Ochen Seriousna - more Phonetic spelling) from people who know nothing about you yet. Am I getting your attention?

    5. I found you by seeing you on O’Reilly. You may not have realised this yet, but you are fast transitioning from an ‘Internet Celebrity’ to a ‘MAINSTREAM Celebrity’. Your Channel’s content is of Mainstream interest also - far beyond your existing student base that has brought you this far.

    6. Your videos are on YouTube, and people can embed a link to any of your Words for Free. Every online newspaper in the Country (maybe the World) is looking for interesting material for their readers. How about a ‘Word of the Day’ feature that would link to one of your Videos? Made available FREE - think you might get some takers? Marina - the ‘Czarina’ of Words - or ‘Marina is Hot for Words’ - depending on the publication…you’d be [sort of] a [Syndicated Feature] - without the [Syndicate]. You could just Email them a new link each day, once you have them set up. In fact, wouldn’t this be of interest to just about ANY website…?

    7. Defining a commonly used word like [University] for instance, may prompt Universities to imbed that definition on their home page (with some Promotion or Suggestion). For that matter - each subject in their catalog of courses could be defined - [Calculus], [History] (Why isn’t it HERStory?), [Political Science] (How is that Science?), etc. I have jotted down another few dozen such ideas that I know would work in other areas - but this is getting so long right now - contact me if you want more…

    8. I know you are thinking - ‘Hey Wait! This sounds like a lot of work to contact all these people…and I’m busy 24/7 right now - not even time for a boyfriend!’ Hmmmmm…maybe some of your Students would be willing to help out a bit…it beats cleaning erasers after class…maybe a signed copy of your upcoming book or a 2010 calendar would provide an [incentive]?

If this has been a help for you or becomes one - Do me a favor? Define about 5 words for me that I can link from my site - they’d be good on maybe hundreds of others too…

One last thing…my [opinion]…don’t make the mistake of becoming another Jenny McCarthy or Brooke Burke - you are very entertaining - but you [eclipse] their substance and message by [orders of magnitude] - nothing against them, but you don’t hear so much about them anymore - I expect to be hearing about you for many years to come, and will be [disappointed] if I don’t!

What a SMART, SMART, SMART woman Marina is!

She has created a really cool and appealing [Brand] for herself…heard the term mentioned in the POSH lesson…

I know she has lots and lots of Students all over the world.

Does anyone know or would there be any way of finding out what the [Demographics] of her existing audience are?

These are the kinds of things I think about in R.E.M. sleep - sad isn’t it?

    Marina,

YOU ARE SPOT-ON in my opinion.

I’m trained as a Statistician who became a Businessman - but you certainly don’t have to be much of a numbers guy to analyze this - it just requires you to [Think outside of the Box].

Marina, You and YouTube are [Symbiotic] - you rely on them for exposure and hosting and income, but let’s not lose sight of the fact that they need YOU and others like you to interest viewers, so they can sell advertising, and monetize their business. People can watch Disney by turning on the TV - not so with HFW.

In looking over the most views there of ALL TIME - you rank right up there at the TOP. Most all of those above you have content created by more than one source, or have multiple distribution sources OUTSIDE OF YOUTUBE driving viewers IN to YouTube - with just a very few exceptions. Also, your content is not at all [Flash in the Pan] - you have long-term Staying Power - as long as the English language continues to be spoken.

I get from your previous posts that you are thinking a bit from the [Paradigm] of how their changes will effect you - which is OK and something you need to keep in mind…but, along the lines of my post yesterday that you responded to, I think you are best served by thinking in the direction of how you effect THEM - both now and in the future…

You are in a position now to drive viewers INTO YouTube. YOU are a draw. YOU can put yourself more and more into the Driver’s Seat. I am [encouraging] [empowerment] if you haven’t already picked up on it…

It seems to me you have [Conquered] most of the important things you can do to market yourself WITHIN Youtube. The press and exposure you are getting OUTSIDE of the site, I will wager, is what is bringing you a lot of new views (Graph your daily views and see how they [correlate] to the press you are getting and your O’Reilly appearances.)

Consider me an example of ONE - but I have read several other posts here from those who heard about you elsewhere, and took the time to sign up and post. I personally have NEVER done so anywhere else. I believe in what you are doing.

BTW - I think your recent lessons are just the right mix of Sexy and Intelligent and Fun - WELL DONE. Parents will not feel [compelled] to block your content, and teenagers and overgrown teenagers (believe me) will be viewing the more [provocative] words looking to see ‘more of you’.

This is the last LONG comment you will see from me.

I’ll send any [Tome]-length comments to your Business Email in the future so as not to [Bore] the others here, or [Hog] your server storage!

Expect one on how I’d do the ‘Syndication’ strategy sometime soon.

I predict ‘you will be to YouTube as [Johnny Carson] was to NBC!’

Is that a [Simile]? or a [Metaphor]? or something else entirely?

Now, why do I have this funny feeling that you have put your mind to this riddle before?

My first clue was/were your early post(s) there, and leaving the micro-amalysis to those more interested in that...they've gone into great depth, and deserve Kudos for that! Very, very diligent work!

I come from a newbe viewpoint here...and I believe we might share a similar view that an 'out of the Box' approach might point in a different direction?

Are you a Statistics guy too? Oddly, probably the most significant thing I learned from my Mentor, had to to with the Philosophical Approach to the analysis...

    Intriguing, you are.

    Thanks for contacting me!

  12. @ darlingj - Welcome to the fray! Always room for new blood. so make yourself at home. You have said things I've stated myself, and heard restated many times since - and now you're getting to a level of comprehension where what I say will have meaning.
Marina is seen by a broad demographic of people in ages ranging from young to fully mature adult males, all still motivated by her sexiful appearance, and coy, girl-next-door "innocence". There are also a percentage of women who seem to want to know how Marina does her craft, as well as having interest in expanding their knowledge. Only a small portion of her viewership comment at the site, which is a good thing when you see the sorts of replies others leave at YouTube. Not all of them want to elevate their consciousness, as you may have noticed.
I, myself, have a role like the bratty brother who just loves her like all get out, but drives her insane periodically because I don't want her to ever fail. I will never be the Teacher's pet, because she gets mad at what I do, when I assert myself - almost to the point of aggression. She's spoiled! She gets a lot of ego strokes from everybody, whether or not they're deserved. She also caves in to popular notions and ideas that pull her off her game; and the result is - she doesn't follow up on finishing or following through with some (a LOT!) of the side aspects she has going on in the site. I "let her have it" when she drops the ball. When you see me doing this, try to understand - it's what I do, and not out of malice. She doesn't always seem to understand the need to follow through. You will likely find other ways to show your love for her work, and that's all good - I like to see fresh ideas thrown at her to consider. On the plus side, she never let's on when she is really pissed at me. Ukrainian women - go figger... I'm still learning.
Just keep doing what you're doing, and stay in the flow - you're doing just fine.

Thanks HFHFW - yep, I figured it out in my own lazy way...great minds...

And Thank You, Cha-Cha for the warm welcome! (Guess I didn't piss you off TOO BAD with that 'Liberal Rant' the other day...)

I have my own cadre of 'Bratty Brothers' in life - I've learned for myself that although I may not like it sometimes, and sometimes I think they are off-base, the important and valid stuff they are telling me usually and EVENTUALLY sticks...but I'd never let THEM know that!

If you and others who read this will indulge bringing me up to speed a little bit more, I want to get a first concept clear in my Mind.

Who knows (besides Marina) what it is that she is seeking to accomplish from this activity (HFW)? Seems to me she created the whole thing from [Whole Cloth] and maybe has it all CLEARLY in mind, or maybe is certain of the direction and doesn't know quite yet where it will eventually go. It's essential to the rest of us being useful - if the help we want to offer is something she would want to pick up.

The idea seems pretty evident from what she's said in the interviews I've watched, (Young Turks, the 1st O'Reilly) - and I picked up a clue or two from the 'Cute' and 'Posh' lessons. My own read at this point would lean toward that she wants to first EDUCATE, perhaps while popularizing the much needed popularization of the concept 'Intelligence is Sexy' (No offense to Paris, Lindsey, Nicole Ritchie, and most of the rest of Pop Culture - well...maybe just a little offense... :D)There are of course a lot of things that go along the main idea - i.e. Have Fun, Be Entertaining, Earn a Good Living, have millions of men all over the world fall in love with you......among others.

Maybe the two above are in reverse order - anyway, I don't think the impetus is some baser motive, like to 'Be Famous' or the Basest of all 'Get Rich'.

What do you guys see, having been around a lot longer than I? Do you KNOW because she's said it or are you inferring the answer like me?

You're welcome and I see you are making friends here rapidly- that's super!

I wouldn't neccessarily say I was a statistic guy but given the complexity of what Statisticians do I give my due respect.

I really can't speak for Marina in what it is she is seeking to accomplish with HotForWords, however, I would just say watch her videos and check out her interviews (as I see you have been) because she tends to be very straight up in her approach and she states her objectives pretty clearly to her audience which is in the tens of millions!

Two I've seen where she does this is 'Cute', where at the end she talks from the heart...also POSH, where she muses about the life of Victoria Beckham - opens the window to the soul a bit...

I found the section you're talking about early on, and noticed they are also arranged in time-line order in the past few days...I'm watching them in date order to see how they evolved...trying to catch up to the rest of you!

Thanks to both GP & Vault!

GP...about my Mentor...best and most comprehensive summary I've seen is here:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W._Edwards_Deming

...but it's just a summary garnered from his written works...

One key point that was 'hammered' home to me when he would seek to critique an analysis from time to time was:

"...A system is a network of interdependent components that work together to try to accomplish the aim of the system. A system must have an aim. Without an aim, there is no system. The aim of the system must be clear to everyone in the system. The aim must include plans for the future. The aim is a value judgment. (We are of course talking here about a man-made system.)" [20] - (Lifted from the text in the Wiki article under quotations and concepts)

Marina created her 'System' - by herself if I understand correctly. Concept, Content, Style, Lessons, Distribution - and all the rest...and now others are helping and seeking to help her with the System in different ways...

I am fairly certain I would be struck by lightning, visited in my sleep, or otherwise troubled in some mysterious way by the ghost of Dr. Deming if I didn't make sure I understood her Aim before I sought to do any significant analyis of her system or offer advice on what she might do differently...

Example: If her main aim is to 'Educate broadly by producing informative and entertaining lessons and promoting Intelligent as a cool and sexy thing to be', you'd approach the analysis differently than if the aim was to 'Be the most Popular Channel on YouTube as measured by number of daily views'...you could anayze the same data and draw a very different conclusion based on the viewpoint...

Doesn't mean it's a big riddle or anything, as I say about 7 posts above - it seems kind of evident from what I've seen - I'm just trying to learn as much as I can, and asking if you guys might know better where to point me...

...and I Thank You both again!

I am whiling away the hours waiting for the movie by doing some Historical HFW research - and reminding myself I'm backed up in my business work by probably 30 hours - good thing there are weekends to work through...and you can always set aside sleep!

I think I'll be making more of an on-topic/point post here in the next few days. Working it out is sort of like plotting that next 3-dimensional chess move...

    Eureka!

I've been watching each lesson in order looking for Marina's exposition as to the Aim of the HFW activity...she states it a number of times in interviews in a general sense so it wasn't a big mystery - but today I found something that speaks more directly to the issue in an article from last year - and Marina states the writer 'hit the nail on the head'...

I'm still about 14 months behind on getting up to speed, but this seems to speak as much to the intention as to the method or hook she came up with to carry out the intention.

    Important for me anyway...
