My favorite lesson is "Penny and Dime" because Marina calls someone on the phone to find out how to pronounce the German word "Pfennig" (penny) and "Pfanne" (pan).
    She said, on the phone,
"How do you pronounce it, because all the German people will be upset".

I laughed my rear end off for months, I was rolling on the floor. That was sooooo funny. I love it when she makes fun of Germans. I used to be one.

From that point forward, I became a regular HFW watcher, but I did not subscribe until 6 months later. I'm a tough customer. However, I roped all my friends into subscribing to HotForWords.

Of course to decide on a favorite HFW video is really tough, like chosing which child to love more. The videos are all awesome with soooooo many nuances and funnies, it tickles me pink. Love em all.

I wonder if Marina has a favorite?
Which one is her least favorite?
Which one is the one where she might say, "what was I thinking?"
Which one does she think is her most proudest video?

Hmmm, I might have to invent a top 10 list of HFW videos, unless someone beats me to it.
Top 10 Best. (General subjective best)
Top 10 Popular. (Oooooops, I shouldn't use that word popular should I?
    Top 10 Funniest.
    Top 10 Favorites.
    Top 10 Most Dramatic.
    Top 10 Most Sexiest.
    Top 10 Most Cutest.
    Top 10 Most Glamorous.
    Top 10 Best Outfit Worn.

    Well, you get the picture.

I LOVE her giving 'geek' two syllables!!!! Also particularly enjoy 'floccinauci...', 'origami' and 'booger'(funniest). I consider 'animated' a word request answered to me as well as the video requester, though neither mentioned by her nor actually requested by me, only knowing that I recently used it in a reply to Marina.

My 'Best Dressed' award goes to her very first interview. Hands down. Gorgeous.

    {thinking...Should we ever meet in person, and should she tell me she plans to wear that, I will make a velcro sweater to wear myself just for the occasion, and give her a great big bear hug ... then rrrrrriiiiippp myself away! LOL}

I have yet to see them all, but spent a couple of hours some months ago and looked at quite a few - I enjoyed seeing her transform over the several lessons. Almost like looking at a family album watching a beloved sister grow up.

    padantickarl,

choose 10 people to choose their top number 1 for top sexiest, funniest, etc. And then have a vote between them all to rate the chosen top 10 which order they shall, then take the averages and there you go!

In one video, Marina is so devastatingly enticing, alluring and chic, I was left almost mesmerised. This video is The Big O (complete version).

I also enjoy any of Marina’s lessons that uncover or point to deeper mysteries. Abracadabra is good example. Fascinating subject matter, and then there’s that equally fascinating bit at the end.

The videos Marina recorded at her home I kind of miss. They come across as more personal; like having a warm and friendly home tutor. Although, I do like the green screen too.

Fetish is funny; there’s something inviting about Marina’s pout near the end, when she tells us to “be good!” - made me smile!

  22. Here's another reason why I like The Fifth Element:

This lesson generated an interesting review in New York Times Magazine by a media critic named Virginia Heffernan. The review was less than kind.

One person who commented on that review was HotForWords own TA, Pedantic Karl.
Together, these three events (Lesson, review, commentary) comprise a three-stroke volley, like a point in tennis. Let's see how it goes:

    1. Marina serves up a video called The Fifth Element
Click this link to see the video:
    http://youtube.com/watch?v=hs-euGPE-FY

    2. Virginia Heffernan returns with a wicked backhand review on her blog.
Click this link to read the review:
    http://themedium.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/12/17/sexicon/

    3. Pedantic Karl steps in and returns the ball to Virginia's court. And it never came back. Point HotForWords! Game, set and match.
(Scroll down in Virginia's blog to see Karl's comment.)

OK, now for the Quintessential part: Until I read this well put come-back. I was accustomed to reading Karl as the supporting and positive person who shows up next to the Queen's Knight chess piece in the forums and comment streams on the hfw site. His retort to Virginia broadened my view. In case you don't know it yet, PedanticKarl is a force to be reckoned with. In my opinion, Karl is at his best when he's being helpful with students and supportive with colleagues. But Karl has another side and you will feel his wrath if you ever offend Marina. This was an important lesson for me, as I can be somewhat abrasive despite my good intentions.

So, as a newcomer to HotForWords I learned more than vocabulary from The Fifth Element. I learned something about social interaction among dedicated people who share a common vision and mutual respect.

That's what stars are made of.

slang words because of the great discussions it produced. the subject of the lesson dominates the entire thread, be sure to start on page one. indicates the strength of the opinions involved. there wasn't even a video by marina attached.

  24. The Fifth Element: a lesson in the power of modesty -- and a good tattoo.

Look at the costume. This outfit shows that Marina is, on this occasion, aware of her public image and capable of delivering a lesson without resorting to what some have labeled "Hooter Garb". When I first watched this lesson, I couldn't get my eyes off of her arm. The long sleeved garment under her T shirt looked to me like a full-sleeve tattoo. The color is a good complement to her skin tone and the artwork is the best I have ever seen on a person's body. I wondered how I could have missed such prominent body art, as I had already watched several of her other videos. Was I so focused on her other parts that I missed this beautiful tattoo? Then I got so focused on the tattoo I missed the point of the lesson.

Only when I watched it the second or third time did I hear the phrase "what stars are made of" -- which is the whole point of The Fifth Element. It's not easy to pay attention when Marina is in front of you -- cleavage or no cleavage.

Marina has come very close to the line with her provocative style of dress, but she hasn't yet crossed it. Where is the line anyway? Who is to say how much skin is excessive? Censors have been debating that issue for years and the debate continues. Marina has attached intelligence to sexiness in a unique way, shaping opinion and influencing a large audience. She may even be moving the line. That's how much star power she has now. Public tolerance is pretty high. This is a video Marina can use as a prototype to appeal to a broader less male-skewed demographic if that ever becomes important.

Right now it seems like the important thing is having some fun in the sun and gathering followers on Twitter. Can't fault her for that either.
