    @buzzword
nicely done. of course you wrote a definitive response to this mass of madness. the questions you pose are beyond difficult. how can deep-seated thought processes and behaviors be changed and how is this achieved on a global level? these issues have existed for millennia. if we can't effect a change or solution.. learn to swim.

    @neuroway
i was speaking from a one-on-one perspective.. one individual to another. but you spun it way out. in retrospect, this wording would have been better: i don't agree with those who try to force their beliefs onto others or those who are violent with another because that person believes differently. fuck big government. fuck politics. fuck propaganda. fuck the media. fuck brainwashing. fuck the greedy bastards. fuck the power mongers. fuck the oppressors.

I would like to take one of buzzword's last three questions above and specifically address the two words extremism and violence and reframe them with the objective to:
    1. demonstrate some natural laws at work in the universe removing cultural bias.
    2. reframe the question in such a way which will remove any concept or notion of value such as "good" or "bad".

Once these ideas are understood in a different light, each one of us may come to a different conclusion than the one that they had before.

Let me start out with this saying; "As above, so below"
This saying is an old Hermetic phrase which refers to the correspondence of various levels of reality of the physical versus the mental (spirit) which relates to what happens on one level as happening on the other level. That is, what happens in the microcosm (the individual) is reflected in the macrocosm (universe) and vice versa and within each lies the other, and through understanding one (usually the microcosm) you can understand the other.

If you didn't follow that, don't despair, I will drill down further in order to elicit your understanding. Let's take the two words that buzzword and others have used before. The words are extremism and violence. Depending on your cultural background, education and other factors, thinking about those two words will probably agitate or irritate you or they may elicit feelings of hate, despair, anger and you may feel your vital signs change in terms of a rise in body temperature or increased blood flow and blood pressure.

The way that you think about those two words in the context of the discussions above will give rise to your internal representation of what you believe those words mean to you and at the same time, you will be reflecting on external situations that will have you feeling many different emotions. All of that is what is referred to as the microcosm or your inner world.

Now, let's look at examples extremism and violence in the external or natural world. I'm sure you can come up with many examples and I'm sure that your body will respond much differently. An example of extreme might be the coldest temperatures in the Antarctic to the hottest places on earth such as some parts of Africa or the Middle East. Examples of natural violent occurrence might be earthquakes, tornadoes and waterfalls. These are what might be termed as the macrocom or universe.

The natural occurrences can be reduced to a simple understanding of potential energy, kinetic energy, relative energy and rates of change. An example of this might be the evaporation condensation cycle which requires energy from the sun which in turn provides rains to fill the rivers which in turn allow water to fall in the form of a waterfall at an extreme and violent rate.

And, as an ancillary thought, that's why some worship the "Sun of God" or solar based religion while others are lunar based.

So, now I submit to you, if you understand the macrocosm or universe in terms of energy and reflect that back on the microcosm or internal world here are some potential answers to buzzword's questions:

Q1: "what can be done to interrupt the movement toward extremism and violence?"
A1: As long as there are differences (perceived, manufactured or otherwise) in culture, ideas, resources and money, that potential energy difference will eventually erupt into a release of energy in terms of violence and depending on what side of the fence you are on, that violence will be either detrimental to you or beneficial. This can also be termed in many different ways such as the difference of income levels or the "Haves and Have-Nots" and can be expressed in many other different ways.

There are millions of violent explosions in your car engine which are beneficial to you, but if a bomb exploded on you, you wouldn't be a happy camper. So, it's all relative and as the old saying goes, it's either them or me.

Am I fatalistic? No!. I'm a messenger, I am not making value judgments.
I am presenting the idea and notion for all of you to understand and realize that nothing ain't gonna happen without massive amounts of energy (mental, inner world). Great and profound mental energies can move mountains.

Marina's videos don't happen in a vacuum by lying on the couch. Marina expends an enormous amount of energy in order to publish a video. In order for Marina to do that there had to be a "will". I submit to you, that 99% of you do not understand the phrase "the will". (ref: 1% solution)

So, to answer some of the questions above, without "the will" and the mental energy to either neutralize, confront, or supersede other levels of mental energy, your notion of change will not happen. The greater the change in energy levels, the greater the violence. Change is guaranteed to happen as long as the sun shines, but in which direction it will happen is up to the collective us.

Part of the energy equation that I didn't talk about, but which is a reality is resistance and capacitance amongst other things. Real world examples would be demonstrations of electrical circuits and water circuits. In the inner mental world that refers to our mental capacity to endure and to offer resistance or our best efforts will be stopped by other resistance. And, so you may be asking how does one achieve that? Ask the opposition or perceived enemy, they are already doing it.

How else might I summarize what I said above? One can understand the natural world by learning to understand the "laws of nature" such as gravity for example. The natural laws are also reflected in the inner world of the mind or spirit. Many people have mastered these laws. Either one masters these laws or they will master you.

For further research into the macrocosm I might recommend Michio Kaku
where his vision of mankind's future considers terrorism one of the main threats in man's evolution from a Type 0 civilization to Type 1. Also, reference the Kardashev scale which is a method of measuring a civilization's level of technological advancement.

    @Karl,

I wasn't sure if you would write down that thought on this forum, but I was absolutely convinced of one thing: from your post about the physical vs the mental, it would run through your mind!

Your perspective is a valid one. So is the opposite. Let an object be the primary unit to create an abstract model. Let a class be an abstract description of a set of objects. Solely by their characteristic intensity, the firing neuron and the lightning bolt are two different objects, but then perchance they are both designed from the same abstract class.

I've got several things to say on this subject:

It's obscene that the Irish Government had proposed this new law at the same time when several reports have been released that documented the systematic child rape by Catholic priests and other men in holy orders in industrial schools controlled by the Catholic church over decades. The Irish Government should have had the decency not to bring this on the agenda at that time.

On the issue of anti-blasphemy laws in general, I don't think that you can lump together all the different laws that deal with insulting religions. In my opinion, it depends on what a specific law is meant to protect, whether it is religion in itself or whether it is the freedom to practice (or the freedom to deny to practice) any religion and establishes religious tolerance as an objective value.

Free speech is certainly one of the most fundamental human rights and one of the greatest achievements in our modern society. Nevertheless, it is just one out of several freedom rights that are fundamental for a free society, and the freedom of (or from) religion is another one of these rights. As I understand it, freedom of religion covers the right to chose freely what to believe or not to believe and to chose to practice a religion or not to do so. Traditionally, human and civil rights are viewed primarily as defensive rights against the state, which means that they are violated when government authorities prevent you from organizing an assembly, speaking your mind in public or having a religious ceremony.

The problem with this traditional view is that it doesn't recognize that civil liberties can not just be threatened by government action, but also by actions of powerful private interest groups. This is especially the case for the freedom of religion. In many parts of the world, members of a minority religion are prevented from exercising their religion by private groups and private individuals that promote hatred towards the minority religion, and occasionally this leads to horrible civil wars. For example, the Northern Ireland conflict (Protestants vs. Catholics) and the Yugoslav wars (Catholics vs. Orthodox vs. Muslims) in the 1990s were mainly religious civil wars launched and conducted by non-state parties. Even if it doesn't lead to a civil war, members of a minority religion often have to fear violence from extremist majority religion groups that effectively makes it impossible for the minority to freely practice their religion.

Thus, to effectively protect the freedom of religion, it is not sufficient if the state simply keeps out of the religion business at all; additionally, the state should take steps that prevent non-government entities to seriously threaten the freedom of religion of other people.

Don't get me wrong: I'm definitely not saying that freedom of speech can always be restricted for the sake of religious tolerance. As I said before, freedom of speech is essential for our democratic societies and one of the most sacred human rights. Sometimes, basic freedoms contradict each other and must be balanced out in a reasonable way.

Here's how I think this conflict should be solved: It is obvious that in order to maintain religious tolerance, it is not necessary to protect one particular or all faiths from criticism, it is even impossible to do so: The Islamic teaching that Jesus was just a prophet can offend Christians because it denies their dogma that Jesus was God, and this Christian dogma can offend Muslims because it reduces Allah as being one out of three. In a free society, nobody has a right to be free from being offended.

In my opinion, the line should be drawn where the freedom of speech is used to promote hatred AND if this promotion of hatred poses a real and significant danger to turn into violence. The goal of "blasphemy" laws must be to protect the public peace in order to maintain religious tolerance, not to protect religion itself. The high value of the freedom of speech in a democratic society should always be taken into consideration and lead to a very restrictive interpretation of laws criminalizing hate speech against religion.

The most difficult problem is that many religious people have a high sensitivity when their belief is criticized, satirized or ridiculed. It must be clear that religious tolerance is a two-way street and that the freedom of believers to proselytise and the freedom of non-believers to promote their ideas have equal value and that nobody has the right demand a special respect for his belief in order not to be offended.

Finally, most people who are blaming the Irish for this new law are missing that a lot of European countries have much broader anti-blasphemy laws. Under the new Irish statute, blasphemy is only an offence when it is "grossly abusive or insulting" and "causing outrage" and the defendant may justify his action by arguing that his speech has a genuine value in the public debate. The Danish blasphemy paragraph doesn't have these limitations. Nevertheless, the last people convicted of blasphemy in Denmark were Nazis in 1938 - the Mohammed cartoonists of 2005 weren't even indicted by the state prosecutor.

  11. buzzword,

i don't really see how religion is necessary for mankind to survive. i don't see how religion serves any purpose at all -- except, of course, giving people an excuse to slaughter other people because they believe in something else or reject any belief.

some say, well, it gives people hope.
here's an interesting article: "Study of the Therapeutic Effects of Intercessory Prayer (STEP) in cardiac bypass patients" (detailed study design here):

    Methods
Patients at 6 US hospitals were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 groups: 604 received intercessory prayer after being informed that they may or may not receive prayer; 597 did not receive intercessory prayer also after being informed that they may or may not receive prayer; and 601 received intercessory prayer after being informed they would receive prayer.
    [...]
    Conclusions
Intercessory prayer itself had no effect on complication-free recovery from CABG, but certainty of receiving intercessory prayer was associated with a higher incidence of complications.

one should think that such an essential part of religion as prayers would change something if some sort of god is listening (the very idea of that, of some deity listening to each and every prayer at once is absolutely insane once you think about it).

so, there goes hope and help through prayers. glad we could clear that up.

i've read this article where, if i recall correctly, it says that there's a brain region for religion. so, let's assume that religion is somehow hardwired into our brains, or is somehow "in our genes" -- that doesn't mean it can't be changed. that may well be the next big step of evolution.

in fact, it has to be changed. here's a quote from an la times article on a study by gregory s. paul:

He found that the most religious democracies exhibited substantially higher degrees of social dysfunction than societies with larger percentages of atheists and agnostics. Of the nations studied, the U.S. -- which has by far the largest percentage of people who take the Bible literally and express absolute belief in God (and the lowest percentage of atheists and agnostics) -- also has by far the highest levels of homicide, abortion, teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.
(full article: "Cross-National Correlations of Quantifiable Societal Health with Popular Religiosity and Secularism in the Prosperous Democracies".)

the first step into the right direction is to ban religion from all public domains. religion has to be a private matter. no tax benefits for any kind of church / religious institution, no access to politics and so forth. this is important. total secularism is the only way to go.

    (more in another posting.)

AHA! No god then? I KNEW IT! I KNEW IT!!! Your methods and conclusions speak for themselves and have absolutely convinced me äläx! This mass of madness was spinning way out of control 'till you enslaved it back under the domination of your astounding smartness. YESSSIR!!! There is no Big Kahuna in the sky! No God!!! YEAH! Tell me about that.. We are FREE untill we die, and there is nothing beyond the borders of life and death so why should we care anyways... Free to smell the smog of big cities, free to choose between Coke and Pepsi, free to see the arrogance of stupid people and the supidity of arrogant people, the stench of favelas and the perfume of the ozone layer!

But.. But.. The cigar galaxy then? Nobody built it? That's... Hell, that's impossible!... I know it's YOU äläx.. It must be you. YOU did it with some buddies or yours while everybody else was sleeping right?

Could you reshape it then? I mean, it's indecent. It looks like a big dick floating by itself in the jet-black sky. We have underage children around here. Were you on crack when you created this or what? We want no porno cosmos dude. WTF were you thinking about? Arbeit Macht Frei! Go! Get back to work and reshape us that dick into a cow, a pink panther, a sombrero, a stetson hat, a brontosaurus or a nice Suzuki Hayabusa! Something nicer! You hear me? Then, you must do as I say. I am FED UP of seeing that screwy dick sticking up in the sky. And while you're at it, why don't you recreate the ozone layer, install a thermostat on our planet so we could control its temperature, stop the planes to fall and the jerks to rise, make the rich poorer and the poor richer, and also, create another nice planet far far away in another galaxy and ship half of the 6 billion terrans there, they make me feel like a hamster inside an aquarium or an ant in an anthouse here. There is WAY too many people around here. I want the Amazonia back! I want the great plains of the West back! The forests! The lakes! The rivers! The salmons! The wolves! The whales! The buffaloes! The clean air and the clean skies! I want it all back! SCHNELL! RIGHT NOW! (Erm.. or tomorrow maybe). Also, why don't you give us some tools so we could communicate with them. My heart is perfectly fine for now, so I have nothink to ask about it! But be on the lookout for more requests to come! I'll let you know as soon as my heart starts giving me problems, eh! You bet!

And yeah, I was going to forget the most important thing. THANK YOU KINDLY ÄLÄX! I am absolutely convinced that you will do everything I asked, exactly as I asked! In the meantime I'll go back to sleep. AND REMEMBER: No more cigars, dicks and guns in the sky eh?

i don't think religion may be a necessity to human survival nor do i argue in defense of religion. i do think it rather futile through social engineering to eradicate unscientific belief. additionally, the risks of a logically valid "slippery slope" argument is worth considering. what safeguards are there to prevent an extremism of another sorts. would any concept or expression not supported by empirical research be black listed? will those fearing being prosecuted for publicly performing irrational acts be driven into hiding? will those found with "beliefs" be quarantined and inoculated with the approved conceptual framework? in my opinion, whether for just or unjust reasons "oppression" remains an unacceptable approach to disarming religious conflict.

however if religion is a product of biology and biology can be restructured, one could physically alter humans so that this trait is removed. which group of people would be selected to undergo such a process? such a process would be expensive so it would probably be the wealthiest and also because of the demographics it would also be the most educated. afterward it would be extended to those that cannot afford the process themselves but share the same motives as the elite. i will ignore the probable class conflict that would result not to mention the response by the masses to an attempt by an elite group to assume authority over them. the cost of genetically altering a nation's population let alone the world population would be significant. it would be far more cost effective to sterilize people so that the religion trait is no longer passed on and the trait of the elite gain dominance as they are permitted or more likely encouraged to reproduce. if this is successful within the confines of a single nation, i wonder what the response would be from the rest of the world as these purified humans engage in an empirical jihad against all those that oppose them. again, i cannot accept "oppression" as an ethical option to counter the negative impact religion has on society.

you provide a valid position regarding religious democracies. i do question the possibility that religion is the only variable that can account for those social concerns listed in the study. still, it is very likely that religion and unscientific beliefs are significantly accountable. the u.s. has frequently attempted to maintain social order by oppressing populations. i would disagree with any attempt even by atheist's with the best intentions to do so. the democratic experiment in the u.s. is ongoing and continues to evolve. such tribulations and failures are an inevitable outcome of an attempt to achieve the cooperation of diverse social groupings. as it is a fundamental trait of humanity to diversify both in biology and ideology it is ultimately necessary for a successful society to develop the means to balance the divergence and convergence of populations be they based on concepts or biology. it would be a benefit to everyone if such a possibility peaceful cooperation is achievable.

i share your disdain for the inherent weakness and failures of religion. i think we mainly disagree on the best response to addressing the dangers posed by religion upon the rest of society.

The above piechart shows religious beliefs in percentage of people. Basically, 85% of humans embrace a religion. If you consider that religion can be anything from the worship of a can of Coca-Cola to the worship of a single God creator of the entire universe, then I would say that a lot more than 85% of terrans are religious.

Definition of worship: "The reverent love and devotion accorded a deity, an idol, or a sacred object."

Definition of worshipping: "To regard with ardent or adoring esteem or devotion."

  20. buzzword, damiana,

i actually thought of an evolutionary, natural change. though physically altering humans would get us there a lot faster. and, if there really is a god gene, why are there so many non-religious people?

The major arguments of the theory are:
    [...]
    (5) spirituality arises in a population because spiritual individuals are favored by natural selection.

statistics say something completely different, atheism is on the rise:

In a 2008 Gallup survey, 15 percent of Americans claimed no religion at all. That is up from only 8% in 1990. That is almost a doubling in the number of "non-religious" in less than 20 years. That is explosive growth! In fact, the "non-religious" now outnumber all religious organizations in the United States except for the Catholics and the Baptists.
    --> source.

many atheists think that we are born atheist. religious views, then, are developed via environment and upbringing. i think this is true. i suppose a lot of people believe because they just can't get rid of the indoctrination they have been exposed to.

in the last, say, 200 years, christianity has calmed down. no crusades, no inquisition etc. except the occasional deeply disturbed individual:

Shelton sounded calm and pridefull when he told the dispatcher he had just shot "the devil himself" with a revolver and a shotgun because "he (Hooper) didn't believe in God."
    --> source.

    almost funny:

The defense [...] pleaded for a verdict of not guilty due to insanity.

    and, sure enough:

Judge Bill rendered his verdict quickly -- guilty of second-degree murder with mental illness.

the article you linked to points to a bigger, global problem, though. islam. islam, unlike christianity, seems to be stuck in the middle ages or something.

democracy has to defend itself and its achievements. we do have mechanisms, laws, means to fight mentally ill believers. we just have to use them. starting with, i know i repeat myself, separation of church/religion and state.

what a clusterfuck. jesus fucking christ.

Diamond Rock (Rocher du Diamant) is a 175 meter (574 feet) high basalt island located south of Fort-de-France, the main port of the Caribbean island of Martinique. The uninhabited island is about three kilometers from Pointe Diamant. The island gets its name from the reflections that its sides cast at certain hours of the day, which evoke images of a precious stone. Its claim to fame is the role that it played in the Napoleonic Wars. The French fleet under Captain Cosmao attacking Diamond Rock. Plato was originally a student of Socrates, and was as much influenced by his thinking as by what he saw as his teacher's unjust death.

Plato's sophistication as a writer is evident in his Socratic dialogues; thirty-five dialogues and thirteen letters have been ascribed to him. Plato's writings have been published in several fashions; this has led to several conventions regarding the naming and referencing of Plato's texts.
The term cybernetics stems from the Greek κυβερνήτης (kybernētēs, steersman, governor, pilot, or rudder — the same root as government). Cybernetics is a broad field of study, but the essential goal of cybernetics is to understand and define the functions and processes of systems that have goals and that participate in circular, causal chains that move from action to sensing to comparison with desired goal, and again to action. Studies in cybernetics provide a means for examining the design and function of any system, including social systems such as business management and organizational learning, including for the purpose of making them more efficient and effective. Topic map of science. This 2008 map of 800,000 published papers showing the relationships among them and different scientific disciplines. Each white dot represents a scientific paper. The word paradigm (pronounced /ˈpæɹədaɪm/ or /ˈpɛɹədaɪm/; from Greek: παράδειγμα paradeigma meaning pattern, from Greek: paradeiknunai meaning to compare, composite from para- and the verb deiknunai "to show"), has been used in linguistics and science to describe distinct concepts.

Until the 1960s, the word was specific to grammar: the 1900 Merriam-Webster dictionary defines its technical use only in the context of grammar or, in rhetoric, as a term for an illustrative parable or fable. In linguistics, Ferdinand de Saussure used paradigm to refer to a class of elements with similarities.

From the 1960s onward, the word has referred to thought pattern in any scientific discipline or other epistemological context. The Merriam-Webster Online dictionary defines this usage as "a philosophical and theoretical framework of a scientific school or discipline within which theories, laws, and generalizations and the experiments performed in support of them are formulated; broadly : a

philosophical or theoretical framework of any
    kind."

  29. Note, for the information below, I purposely did not make the links
clickable for at least two reasons.
    - I am not here to legitimatize nor support the following links.
    - Active links feed referrer data back to his server which I will
not do and as that person has made general threats to the secular community.
When you copy/paste the links into your browser, the referrer data will be null or empty.

A few hours ago I came across a YouTube channel of a guy that calls himself Jesus Christ who is hell bent on starting his own theocracy and a new world. It seems he has only been on YouTube about 3 months and already he has 443 videos uploaded.

Many of those videos are actually the same and he just changed the titles.
He has a general message to attack the secular world, and he is uploading the same video with a different titles, with each title addressing a popular YouTuber.
He Favorites those videos that are attacking him.

    1. YT channel name: IAMJESUSmovie (youtube.com/IAMJESUSmovie)

    2. The person calls himself "I AM JESUS CHRIST" or "JESUS CHRIST", occupation King.

    3. His name is: Richard William Brown (NY)
    See written testimony: kingdomofgodtestimony.com
See video testimony (Windows Media file): kingdomofgodvideos.com/videotestimony.wmv

    4. This is the video that I ran into.
    "To: hotforwords emimusic bbcworldwide showtime
    nigahiga blacktreemedia realzchannel trailers
    "
    youtube.com/watch?v=3fUj5uJkL9k

    5. Apparently, Jesus has a sense of humor.
Here he is under a different YT channel "APOSTLEPAUL7777777" mocking someone else.
"BABES, BEER, JESUS AND HAIR MICHAEL GOODSPEED SATIRE"
    youtube.com/watch?v=EzEO6yXwGyo

    6. His primary web site is: kingdomofgodcornerstone.com
Instead of having multiple topic folders under one domain name, he has purchased a bunch of GoDaddy domain names. When you scroll down to the bottom, all of those links are different domain names.

    7. In this 18 min video you can get a feel of where this guy is headed.
    kingdomofgodvideos.com/videoattackcounterattack.wmv

Other videos are listed on this page: kingdomofgodvideos.com

I tried to find the small print that says, this site is a parody and is only to be used for entertainment purposes. So far, I haven't found that, so I must conclude the guy is slightly off center or a brilliant marketer who is planning to scam the gullible? Good thing I don't hear voices telling me the answer.
