I keep getting asked how I make my HD videos.. so here is an attempt to explain how.

First of all, I shoot with a Sony HVR-V1U which is an awesome camera. It looks like more camera than it is... it's basically a video camera that shoots in a form of compressed HD. You can get it discounted at Amazon.

I put the camera on a tripod, turn the screen around so that I can see myself and then record.

Then I bring it into my Mac and edit in Final Cut Pro.

I then output the final product at 1280x720 H.264 at 4mbps and 128kbs aac audio actually aac is no good it hickups in HD mode.. I am going (Apple) loss-less audio from now on.

The file sizes are large and it takes forever to compress.. but I think the results are worth the wait.

Here are a couple of my videos in HD:

Go ahead and ask me any more questions you may have.

Thank you Marina for this forum, a great new addition.
The file sizes that are cached in FLV are about 60-80 MB.
    The old 8 M is now 80 M
Time to get more disk space. Gatta have it, as Buck says.

Wow, that's some camera. You could film the next Star Wars movie with that baby. I've gone with Sony many times since they really do make quality products.

    Hot for Video!

Oh this is cool! Love the post editing tools. Beats copy pasting code.

I need to learn FCP. If I teach you Karate, will you teach me FCP Kung Fu?

    Hello Marina,
When did you upgrade to that camera?
I thought that you did everything with you Mac.

I got the camera a little while back.. since I moved basically as the Mac does not shoot widescreen. I tried it out a couple times back but there was no reason to shoot wide screen so I stuck with the normal 4:3 until YouTube moved to widescreen.

  27. Cool! James will be along shortly - LOL! Were there any aspect ratio issues going to widescreen format? Does the encoder automatically compensate or is there manual setting to apply to avoid horizontal/vertical stretching? You should get yourself the 52" HD Sony TV - awsome picture; and pick up on the surround sound system for it, too. Those tiny towers are real teeth shakers :Mr Green:

The key to getting widescreen is to upload it in widescreen. If you don't have HD, then DON'T do what James does and STRETCH it out.. as it simply looks horrible. You're better off cropping the video to 640x360 (instead of stretching out 640x480) then uploading that.

If you want HD, then you have to start with 1280x720 footage from an HD camera and upload at that resolution.

I lose my ability to zoom in, etc. now that I shoot at 1280x720 and output at that, but it's worth it as the quality is so awesome

Why do you lose the ability to zoom in HD?
Is this true with all HD cameras?

Oof! THAT camera ain't in the budget for this year! maybe after that new Aptera comes out...

But that's WAAAY more camera than I'll ever need, anyway. I only expect to be no more than a mere hobbyist with this thing. Maybe I can get something that'll work for me on the cheap somewhere, but my el cheapo laptop cam just won't cut the mustard. Probably wouldn't cut warm butter, either, to complete the analogy...

Thanks for hosting this nifty new forum! this should be fun!

    Ciao,
    Fianchetto
