There are women from some of the Southern states in the U.S. who
are embarrassed by their southern accents. Well, why don't they
change their accents? My opinion is that for most people, changing
their accents is either impossible, or so difficult that it would
require constant effort, because the way we speak is formed early
in life when people are more elastic. And for other people, it's not that
difficult to change their accent. I chatted with a Bulgarian, years ago,
and an Honduran immigrant at a dinner party recently, both of whom told
me of their concern that they spoke with strong accents. I assured both
of them that English is spoken all over the world, and most people,
except myself, have accents. The most extreme accents are
found in England. Language is about communication, and people can
communicate in English with accents. Specifically, Marina's
accent is not a strong accent. There's no difficulty listening
to her speak. One thing that I've noticed is that there are people
who lose patience with accents.
