Hey guys.. I've been working for days (in my sickness) on making the website more friendly. I like the look of the comments now.. they look clean.

I also widened the site by 20 pixels... which gives me a little more room to put things.

I still have to widen the forums.

    BUT.. I need your help!

Where can I make it obvious that there are new posts? Right now it's tough to figure out when I have new posts and it makes it difficult for me to communicate with you guys.

Right now I have a little box on the homepage and one on the sidebar.. but they really don't stand out. I can't replace the lesson box on the right as that's the most important part.

I even tried going with the blog format for the site over the weekend, but that ended making my site look a lot less than it was.

So.. any suggestions would be welcome!

    Thanks so much!

Marina what is wrong with where you have it now. It looks like there is plenty of room.

If I understand this WP theme correctly the top level navigation is for pages, (Home, Request A Word, Nerdword etc...) and the horizontal navigation just below that is for categories. If you're trying to clean things up, that's where I would start.

You could probably roll some of those categories into just one. For example... do you need a Blog, T.A., News, Shoutout and Random Category? Those could all be part of "blog". The titles and tags, could reflect the subject (i.e. "shoutout").

Also consider if you really need all of these categories and pages in the top navigation... they are duplicated elsewhere on the home page. The "header" in this theme is easy to hack, so you could exclude a couple of those if you decide you want to. I can show you how to do that if you need to... but I think there's a handy plugin for that too.

I would take a close look at your "Google Analytics" and see what links people are clicking, and which pages people are hitting, and think about top level and other areas of the home page. Why keep something no one's clicking? Seriously, if you spend some time on analytics seeing how people navigate through the site, deciding what to do will probably be academic.

Next, it looks like the lead story in the featured content area is also just below it... so you want to be careful your not placing the same content in different places all over the home page.

Lastly, since your site has so much content, you might consider adding a "tag cloud" in one of the side bars... this would help people find all the content you've posted by tags... if you haven't been tagging things, it would take some time to go back and tag everything; but your T.A.s would probably happy to help! Word Press has a nice tag cloud plugin that makes it easy. This really depends though, on whether you could eliminate anything else... there's a lot there already.

The comments of other comments; is what you talking about?

Information is only what you would want to communicate; and keep it like 1-3-1...1.)say what you are and that is what is current...{three}1.)make your points of past lessons, 2.) press and promotion(where you ham it up)..3.) what can be expected from your trusty HotForWords---Marina Orlova...and back to your 1.) conclusion and that is the communicant of your web-site and its information...compliance to the people that care about commication using words.
PS...if my comments are not answered I assume ...

I spent a little more time, and found a few other things:

On the top right you have "Twitter" in the category menu, and 1 inch below it - another link to "follow me on twitter" (same content). You could create one text widget in the side bar with all your social links there using simple square icons (cause everyone knows what they are) Twitter, Facebook, RSS, YouTube and any other social sites you keep up. Keeping it at the top would make them prominent and free up space in the top navigation.

Also... I like having links to all the press items on the left side, like your O'Reilly appearance etc... but the pics are taking up a lot of space. A smaller pic and text links, organized as one block, would probably get just as much attention.

It looks like the "fonts" on the home page are inconsistent. I'm not talking about size or color, but "type". You want to be careful about mixing up too many font types.

If there is a way to re-design the header and place the "login / Register" at the top "right" (where the "intelligence is sexy" slogan is) where it is more prominent... but you'd have to find a good spot for "intelligence is sexy"... as I think this important to your brand. Speaking of which, you need to get that TM or R (registered trademark) after "Hotforwords" in your top header logo!

email me if you need clarification or want help with any of this.

Re: Comments box in newly formatted HotForWords video lessons.

There is no link to the practice page, as it used to have.
I had cause to use the practice page, and found one in one of the forums,
but it would be convenient to have a link to that page on top of the comments box.

Also, it would be convenient to have HTML tags either listed above the comments box again, or put the nice HTML buttons like the forums comments boxes have. I can get along without it, but newbies might benefit from it.

Marina, could you explain to me why you have this topic on two places of your web site? Im confused why you would want 2 conversations.

    @Captain Jack
My guess, based on the context of one of Marina's sentences:

Marina said on the main site:
"You can comment below for now or in the forum later."

Also, the blog type postings on the main site are short lived.
Take a look at any non-video post on the main site and you will
see less than 100 comments, except for some interviews and O'Reilly posts.
So, I presume Marina wants additional comments about the site into
the future, and starting a parallel Topic here is a perfect way to get started
and notice that the Topic is sticky green.

@PK, Oh ok, I failed to read the sentence before I made a comment. My bad! Thanks for twittering your answer. I'm still waiting on word about a plugin that would allow replies to be posted to an email like on the main site. It's been a month now I think I better check up on them.

Your correct that posts are short lived. I'm well aware of this. Im not an air-head. well at least the last time I check, LOL!

@PK: Also, the blog type postings on the main site are short lived.

Should we copy paste, start a new topic (PK & Rijk's site-redesign discussion) , or leave it as it is?

Ahhhh, you found us. Yes, utilize this Forum Topic as the continuation of our previous discussions on the main site. There are some good suggestions above, so this topic will serve as a collection point to offer any new ideas that you, others and I may come up with.

No I meant copy paste. Think there is more than enough in that topic to keep her nailed to her mac for weeks. And it is on a different level than the rest in this topic. What's in here comes after what we talked about in the
site design follow up kickoff is comment 91, but it really takes of at comment 94

The site itself does look rather good.

The forum sure seems plain however.
I have a forum, I also have the ability to allow the user choose several different backgrounds which is really nice.

Similes are nice as well. I have been to many forums where they have 3 times as much as I do on mine. It is different, but then those forums load slower I did notice. You could even have the textarea box background an image which is nice.

I do like css for all that, easier than html.

Here is my place..I have many features, but plan on deleting it here soon. Good example of what forums can be like with some style instead of being bland

    Marina,

How come you only allow just a few choices of "Share This Article"?

Why is "121 Comments and 16 threads ...& ....Leave a Comment" text so very large?

How come you don't have a button on your pages for "Site Map"? We have to click on all the words then click on "Every post on the site" to get page that shows all the posts in Chronological order?

What is your "Blog" button for? Your whole website is a blog (weblog). It's confusing button. It's a mixture of articles and lessons. It just doesn't make sense to me, maybe I don't understand how this is so post to work. Please help.

Your navigation bar is severely cluttered. It's like a homeless man lives there. The colored text looks trashy. Not very pleasing to the eye. It also confuses me where I should start viewing your site. I keep wanting to click on Nerd Words as that seems to me the most important page for all the wild colors. Why is "Videos" not called Lessons?

    @CaptainJack
As you know, I am very close to this site, and when Marina did the re-design, I was even closer. Some of the questions that you are asking is a result of my input, so I will address those questions that you have.

The questions you pose are all valid, but for me they are very low on the priority scale of criticism. I am very anal when it comes to certain web things and Marina would have heard them by now, other than the critiques I have already made.

The recent two critiques I made (on the other Topic page)
    1. Change pagination from the current 80 comments / page to 1000 comments / page.
    2. Increase Visibility and Discovery of recent comments by showing more who commented, maybe in the last 24 hours. Maybe color code recent comments for a period.

I do not speak for Marina in my answers below, but, keep in mind, I am VERY close to this site because of what I observe, and not what Marina says, other than what she posts at the top of the page. Also, keep in mind, the objective of the site changes are to facilitate people to leave comments.

Q1: Why is "...Leave a Comment" text so very large?
    A1:
How large is large? I see the text as about 2 smileys high, which is perfect.
If you see it larger, check your browser settings. What browser are you using?
Bob had an issue with fonts due to a NON-Defaulted setting in FF.
My FF settings are all set to DEFAULT, and this HotForWords site Rocks!!!

Trust me, people need to be invited to comment. It's a demographics thing, aside from a technology thing for those who do not comment often. Most people are technophobes, even though they are able to manage. How do you get people to do things? You ask them, and you gotta make it bold and in big letters. Leave the font size as is.

Q2: How come you don't have a button on your pages for "Site Map"?
    A2:
First, Marina actually did have a link in the Main navigation menu section, but as you said, the navigation menu section was becoming too crowded. That link that she had is the link under the "All Words" menu called "Every post on the site".
I am the one that told her to move it to a Catch-All page, and that catch-all page is the "All Words" page. Everything you wanna know under one roof. No muss, no fuss.

Notice how Marina spelled "Site-Map". She spelled it; "Every post on the site".
That is awesome and I agree with her spelling. Trust me, it is not only a demographics thing, but keep in mind we have lots of foreign people here. How do I know what people are asking and why Marina does what she does? Because, I read EVERY comment.

Yes, I agree it would be nice to have a site map as the main navigaiton, but, from what I observe, most people don't use it. Most people are creatures of habit and only use what is presented to them, which is the Latest Video box. Most people don't explore the site and those that do, it is not a big deal to have the site index under "All Words".

Q3: What is your "Blog" button for?
    A3:

I don't know the answer to this one Captain Jack, so I am not speaking for Marina, but I can speculate.

I had Marina actually completely remove that link from the navigation, and also had it placed under the "All Words" menu. Marina, then returned it to the main navigation. Here is my speculation. This site is visited by a variety of people, including advertisers. The Blog link is an abstracted showcase of Marina's work, which I think is a great way to present her work. It works for me.

Q4a: "...navigation bar is severely cluttered."
Q4b: Why is "Videos" not called Lessons?
    Q4c: Why all the colors?

    A4a: Clutter
The navigation bar used to be a lot more cluttered as the font was smaller.
I like that the 1st line of the navigation menus is large.
As I mentioned earlier, I had Marina take out the "Blog" link, but she put it back. I think it is fine as is. In order to remove links, Marina would have to create another catch-all page with sub-links. I am not opposed to that, but Marina has her motivation for showcasing the links as they currently are. It works for me.

    A4b: Videos vs Lessons
The menu link that you see in the 1st line called VIDEOS used to be on the second navigation line. It used to look like this in the lower left navigation way before the design change.

    1st line: Home ...
    2nd line: "All Words" "Videos"

That "Videos" link is relatively new and was added before the design change.
The "All Words" link was originally called "Lessons" a long time ago.

Again, I am not speaking for Marina, and I can only speculate as follows.
The VIDEOS link is an abstracted showcase of all of the Videos. It is the same as the Blog link minus the non-video posts. The "All Words" link is a great index with sub-indexes and I use it all of the time. I think it is awesome.

    A4c: Colors in links
I think it was a great idea to add the colors. First, it is fun and it also separates the links from each other being all white. I love the mixed text colors and the variety of other link colors. It works for me and shows a whimsical and fun side to this site. I love it.

Addendum to my immediate post above
    Videos versus Lesson

I had erased the most important part of my explanation above in why it is more important to use the word "Videos" than "Lessons". I don't disagree with what you are asking Captain Jack, regarding the wording, but keep in mind you and I have been here a long time. We are looking from the inside out. You have to look at this site as a newcomer from the outside in.

Take the HotForWords videos on YouTube. YouTubers do not think of those videos as lessons. They think of them as videos. I do. Do I judge every video by it's content and say, oh that was a blog video, and that was a skit video and that was a comedy video. No, they are all videos to me.

When a YouTuber comes over here, they are looking for the videos, not lessons. Guess how many times I was asked the question, where are the videos when Marina originally listed that link as "Lessons". I think at one time I had her change it to "Video Lessons" and people would still ask where are the videos.

Also, for the most part, people come to YouTube to be entertained. Most of them don't want to be in class, but most are happy to learn new things after they have had the chance to view a HotForWords video.

    This HotForWords site Rocks it!!!

One thing that would be nice is to see a background of Marina. A plain background is not so good..A background showing those wonderful legs would be nice..

The other thing is I do wonder why this site, and the youtube channel are not similar in colors....
